First time in this area to visit the library nearby, Tavares was a great choice for a quick to go lunch. The restaurant was quite busy when I arrived on a Friday afternoon but there were about 3-4 staff behind the counters serving the line. Overall it was only about 5 minute in and out of the restaurant with my delicious lunch. Food was absolutely incredible, the mix of baked beans and the pork belly gravy reminded me of how delicious Dominican food was while in the Caribbeans. Price was actually lower than I expected where its under $10. Definitely would recommend the place if you're ever in the area, its right next the J train stop and the lady that helped me spoke great English so for those that are Spanish challenged like me definitely quite a warming welcome. read more

Small place, not a lot of seating. Its on a side street, parking is a pain! Great selection on the menu....all your Spanish food faves! Tostones, maduros, baked chicken, beef stew, steak, fish, pork and mofongo....just to name a few. Yummy desserts! Tavares Restaurant is open all day! Literally could eat all my meals here if I wanted to. There's a few other restaurants in the area as well but everyone seems to come here. Even the cops who patrol the neighborhood stop there for food. I ordered a small rice, beans and chicken. It was the size of a child's plate for $4 but it filled me up. For $1 more I could of got a larger togo plate but I just wanted to try it out for myself since I saw everyone was eating from here. They also sell cakes in the front that I've never tried. If you want decent Latin food with clean facilities, this is the place to go in this part of Brooklyn. They have varieties of rice and beans, chicken, fish, soup, salad, etc. The people there are really nice, even though who are English language newbies. I usually give ip and speak Spanish, the appreciate friendly native words sometimes.... remember some people are rude and yell at them. There is a small dine on area as well. I usually split the 1/2 roast chichen special with the bf and we are always stuffed. Where else can that happen for $8? The salads are also pretty good with the homemade vinegarette. I normally order my BF and Lunch from here because the food normally is cooked well and savory. I order BF this morning and it was horrible. I ordered an egg white spinach omelette with half avocado and guineos. I specifically told the guy to please make sure I get some oil on the side as I know the plantains can be a bit dry. Well... I got dry a** plantains with nasty frozen spinach ( at least I'm hoping it was because it smelled more like seaweed ). I told him I wanted black coffee with sugar; I got coffee with milk- I really hate it when I order food and have to pay for the order not done right and especially if it taste horrible. I don't know when the staff sleeps because I legit have always gotten my food delivered crazy early. Also, always delicious, well seasoned, and generous portions. I haven't tried everything on the menu but I can vouch for the baked sole, mashed potatoes, sweet plantains and passion fruit juice. I want to be fair here. It wasn't the worst food I've ever had, but certainly not the best. (I don't eat meat, so keep that in mind for this review.) I ordered the cheese mofongo, an avocado salad, & mozzarella sticks. My favorite item was the salad honestly. The mozzarella sticks were very overpriced, and a lot of them were fried to the point where they exploded, and they were just hollow, crunchy tubes of bread crumbs. The cheese mofongo was incredibly dense. It comes compressed, and it was just hard to chew, dry, not great. That being said, they were very generous with the cheese, which i did not expect. I'd recommend a different place if you're a vegetarian. read more

In the several times I have gone here (to see if the experience would be different) I have been ignored (sat at a table and watched as others around were given their orders), disrespected (the waitress listened to HALF of my order before deciding to cut me off. Came back with HALF my order and when I called her out for it, she got defensive when it's her mistake for cutting me off. She also gave my friend the wrong drink. She asked for a ginger ale and was given sprite.) and have waited more than 20 minutes each time (at one time it was almost an hour and no I didn't order anything that would require an hour to make). The food is basic and flavorless. The waitresses are rude and racist. Unless you speak Spanish and/or are Dominican, don't expect to be treated good. read more

Before I start this review, you have to know that this is based off their delivery, which I got yesterday We ordered Meal #4, which was their fried chicken pieces, beans, white rice, plantains, and 2-liter drink. My first bite into the chicken indicated that it was either very fatty or a tad undercooked. And I don't mess with oddly textured chicken, so I put it to the side. It was a one-off as the rest of the chicken were fine. Beans tasted great and it was the piece that pulled the whole thing together. Rice was okay but they didn't last too well the next day as the grains were hard (I made do by turning it into fried rice hehe). Plantain was okay. This was the absolute worst food I've ever had in my life. The calamari was dead before it even got fried , and don't get me started on the marinara sauce it had the consistency of ketchup but the taste of metal from world war 2. I cant stop buying from here. In an area where Dominican Restaurants are on almost every other block, its hard to find one that really stands out. And this one stands out. I found this location on Yelp in the spring and decided to try em out without any expectations. I ordered the Pernil (pork shoulder) with rice and beans. Food arrived pretty fast and boom, mouth watering pork galore. The rice had good texture and taste to it. The beans, not so much, but to be honest, almost every Spanish/Puerto Rican/Dominican Restaurant seems to let me down with how they cook the beans. Ordered from them a few more times and never disappointed. Then I tried something different, I ordered tostones (plaintains) and chicharon without bone. And again, I was not disappointed. The chicken was not over cooked and the Tostones were awesome. Their garlic sauce could use a change in flavor but its not bad. I came in person another time and ordered their pork chops. My goodness, they were thick, juicy and well cooked. I keep ordering from them til this day. read more

Green plantain mangu with eggs, cheese and onions for breakfast is great. I tried the oatmeal once and it smelled burnt but I didn't taste the burning flavor in it. They have combo meals started at $3 with rice beans and chicken but since I am a vegetarian I won't be needing the meat. I asked if they could substitute it for something like a small salad or tostones and they refused so I ended up spending $13 on rice beans and tostones. The tostones took about 15 mins while everything else is already made prior to and they just leave it over a proper food heater. Everything smelled good but the rice was a little hard, their chicken was salty & the worst of all they forgot the utensils!! (Keep in mind I'm staying the night at a hotel so I have no utensils). Now when I called back the lady asked who did my order no one knew then it sounded like there was a problem bringing utensils smh. In 2010, a friend of mine from Uruguay invited me to go to Tavares to watch a game where the Uruguayan team would play. The crowd was very enthusiastic and I had a very good time there. The place is not big but the food is very good and with a home-made feel. There is plenty of beers, too. A casual place to stop by and eat a not expensive meal. read more

Excellent food and service. I've been coming here for years with my dad. They recently renovated and now I love it more. An extensive menu selection and will put something together for you in the back with no problem. I'm a vegetarian also so I truly appreciate how they have options for me. My family and I will never eat from there again, on our last order the maduros where left completely raw and so were the chuletas, the pollo al horno is the worse I've ever tasted and the ensalada de papa went straight to the garbage. Well they seem to have a very extensive menu, the fish looks and smells as fresh as can possibly be though I somewhat doubt that it was not fully frozen before being cooked, and as per usual with these places you simply do not get enough beans to equate with the amount of rice you get, the prices are within reason I think, and well it is my insight that the staff have generally speaking a typical New York attitude/mentality but not so much obvious as you tend to find almost everywhere else, but we shall not let that sort of thing deter us from going back to try something else from the menu read more
