Took granddaughter for first Bison burger! Loved it. Fresh not frozen, best bison burger I've had yet. Next time I'm trying Bison taco & burrito!

Sooooooooooo delicious. This is the ONLY restaurant we eat at on the regular, most places we got to once and never again as I love eating new things each time. This tiny little place is such a gem. The owner is so kind and friendly to everyone who enters, it is always clean, the cans of pop are $1 (what?!?!? unheard of). Everything on the menu is so good, my teenager gets a burger every time and it's one of the only places he will eat his salad. The food is always perfect, the house hot sauce is DELICIOUS, everything is always fresh and hot. If you haven't tried this place... go immediately.

They've got bison deliciousness and they've got vegetarian deliciousness...take your pick!

This place is an awesome option for lunch and just goes with the park/zoo/Fort perfectly! As you may have seen from the sign: they do vegetarian and they do bison. The menus keep it simple - bison on the left, veggie on the right, and either one in the middle. Service is super friendly and fast! I like that you can see the cook top area because you know it's clean! I went with a grilled veggie sandwich. Kinda wish I went with a burrito, but it was really good and I'd very happily eat another one and there's always another day. The parental unit went with bison chili and really liked it. This place is definitely simple and very homestyle. Drinks come in bottles/cans and the food is served on paper even if you eat in. The walls have all sorts of funky bison related décor and I'm all for it. I love walking around the park/waterfront, so there's a very good chance I'll be coming here many, many times.

We don't typically see places that specializes in bison so we decided to check it out. It's a small but very home-y restaurant with a few tables inside and a couple outside. We got a Flawless Burrito and Bison Joe. Both were fairly similar, just in a different form. They were tasty, but I think I preferred the traditional burger. The spuds were like a baked potato that were seared so they had crispy edges, which I really enjoyed! The service was very friendly and accommodating. I'd consider coming again if I happened to be in the area.

I have frequently driven past this place and finally stopped in after a trip to the zoo with the family. We are big bison eaters, and usually use that as our choice of red meat. My daughter had the kids bison burger, she gave it two thumbs up and enjoyed the bottled root beer as well. I tried the bison dip, it was so delicious and filling. The only thing I was missing was maybe a little extra seasoning, like horseradish. Not sure if it was the owner working, but he was super friendly and answered any questions we had. They have a couple tables in there as well, so we enjoyed our meals in the restaurant. I will definitely come back to try more options!

TLDR; Bison burger is a great option for those who haven't tried bison before Decor and service far exceeds. Sides are a healthy alternative to the usual fast food options. Flawless burrito.. I mean grilled onions, crimini mushrooms, bison and garlic hot sauce. Says take out, but there are options to seat in! Awesome decor and Buffalo memorabilia. Unique iron stools up window-side. If you're willing to try bison foods with vegan options as well, provides plenty on the menu! Stopped by for lunch after the many times of driving by here, Im glad I did. First and foremost it doesn't seem that there is chicken or beef on menu, only bison and vegan options. Love that. The menu is simply yet descriptive, even colored coded for "crowd" favorites. I ordered the Bison Burger with Spud, Spuds are these potato slices baked a nice alternative to fries. For anyone whose first time is trying bison, definitely go with the burger route. For one, the bison patty is rich in flavor and maintains its size unlike a burger beef patty. Great sized produce to go in the burger and finished off with almost a house made like bun. A great introduction to bison for anyone. I just had to try more, so I tried the Flawless burrito with in house made potato salad. Flawless burrito was amazing, again nice fresh produce with perfect amount of ground bison along with crimini mushrooms, garlic hot sauce wrapped in a whole wheat tortillas. Potato salad was different than any other potato salad ive tried. Rather before potato salad seemed overwhelming with everything in it, tatanka's potato salad relies on simplicity to deliver a great and fresh taste, bits of pickle and dash of dill in the dish brings that upgraded flavor to a seemingly meh side option. Overall, There is plenty on the menu to try. Tatanka Take-out provides great healthy alternatives all while bison being farm sourced!

tl;dr: I'm glad I finally got around to trying Tatanka Takeout. If you're in the mood for a leaner burger than your standard fare, it's a solid place to patronize. That said, I probably won't make a point to return. After driving by Tatanka Take-Out for years, I finally decided to stop in. I always expected it to be a passion project run by an old Native American, so when we were greeted by a young white woman I had minor concerns about cultural appropriation. The inside is covered in buffalo/bison artwork and memorabilia, and the seats at the window counter are crafted metal saddles. Otherwise the seating is pretty standard and stark. Its name includes the phrase "take-out" so you're not expected to hang out. I appreciate that they're branding themselves as a healthy alternative to common fast food. Their "fries" are red-skinned spuds boiled and sliced in shapes resembling fries, and the buffalo meat is leaner and more organic than beef. Eating it didn't feel as gluttonous as, say, McDonald's, but it still gave us a little gastro-intestinal trouble an hour later. I got the Bison Burger and my wife got the Flawless Burrito. Served on paper plates, the presentation of the burger was appealing: tall, well-built, oozing with sauce and steaming potatoes on the side. My wife's burrito was wrapped in tin foil and served by itself. Less appealing. The burger was good, but had a lot of onion. My breath smelled for two days afterward. My wife's burrito was also very onion-heavy. Aside from that, it had the nostalgic taste of a backyard barbecue. The service was courteous, offering to clear our places even though it wasn't a tableside-service restaurant. Conclusion: I'm glad I finally got around to trying Tatanka Takeout. It's worth visiting, but I probably won't make a point to return.

Best bison in town!! Wow this place has spectacular quality of bison and at a very reasonable price for a plate. The meat is super lean and not at all greasy which was delightful and impressive. They strictly have bison options or a handful of vegetarian meal options. I'm not a vegetarian but I'd like to visit again to give those items a try. I went for the "BBQ Bison Roast" and I've gotta say it was perfectly made from every aspect. They offer side dishes with your meal but they were out of two of the 5 options. Nevertheless, the "skin spuds" side was well made and seasoned to perfection. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

I have been to Tatanka a few times over the last 5 years and have always enjoyed it. The food yesterday was deserving of a 5-star review. It reminded me why I come back when in Tacoma. This is a one man show (soon to be helped by a family member). Buffalo is leaner than beef, hence more healthy. Lean does not mean dry. The Bison Melt was so incredibly juicy, with LOTS of grilled onions and the perfect amount of sauce and cheese. I savored the last bite. As I write this, I pine for one more bite! We also got the Spuds and Veggies. I had expected some fried veggies and french fries. What arrived was grilled FRESH vegetables (broccoli, onion, mushroom, brussel sprouts) and grilled potato wedges, salted and peppered just right. It was served with their slightly spicy garlic sauce. I understand why there was a steady line of folks stopping by for take-out. We ate at a table outside and enjoyed the cool breeze and great food! This place may serve the food on paper plates, and prepare it in a simple manner, but this guy is a Master!

Quiet neighborhood spot we have driven by a million times. Well worth stopping in a getting some good food. We tried the burrito and and burger and enjoyed both. The house fries were great as well. If you are hungry, it's going to fill you up. Good portions and delish. Support a small business. Support healthy food options. Support eating native meats over another over processed cow from a feed lot.

Very excited about going here as we read the reviews beforehand. We got the flawless bison burrito, chili and sloppy Joe. The sloppy Joe had no sauce and just a small amount of bison. The chili was bison and pinto beans with no tomato base, no vegetables and no flavor. The worst part was that the burrito was just the chili inside of a wrap. They added about 5 or 6 dices of onions throughout the whole burrito. There were no other veggies. Finally, the pickle they included with the sloppy joe was extremely soggy. We paid $31. read more

I had high expectations for this place after reading reviews & they let me down a bit. Overall I would go back if in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way for this please. Portions are big but I think it lacks in flavor. I was really excited for the bison meat but the blandness of it let me down. Not bad, but not 5 stars. FLAWLESS BURRITO: Portion was very big. Me & my daughter split this burrito & I still had some left over from the next day. It was filled with lettuce (majority of the burrito), cheese, diced tomatoes, onion, hot sauce, & bison meat. I asked for them to add guacamole but they were out. This made me very sad because no burrito should go without avocado ( I went home & added my own). The overall taste of the burrito was good but I have a couple complaints. 1. Burrito was mostly shredded lettuce 2. The garlic hot sauce was a little too spicy ( & I like spicy) 3. Bison meat was bland - the meat looks like they took a bison patty & chopped it up - I suggest ordering extra meat because they kind of skimp. PRICE: $7.95 - decent price for the size but not the quality. RED SKIN SPUDS: These were seared quartered red potatoes. Nothing special. Maybe the ones with cheese & garlic hot sauce are better. I went home & added minced garlic & cheese to make my own version of their cheesy garlic spuds - but it didn't make it taste much better. Overall I'm disappointed in this item & how much I spent. PRICE: $2.95 - again, decent price for the size but not the quality. LEMONADE: Their lemonade sits on a table & is in a big round glass pitcher & it self serve.It looks like an authentic set up you would see in a real western restaurant. But don't let this fool you, the lemonade is SO sour/bitter as if they didn't put any sugar in it (but there is not sugar for you too add). For some reason tho my 3-year old daughter did like it. PRICE: $1.00 CUSTOMER SERVICE: The guy who helped us was very nice & laid back. He interacted with my daughter too which is always good to see. read more

Where do I start? Good location, great customer service and amazing food. I got the Flawless Bison Burrito.. So flavorful!! I told the cook it was my first time there and I had found them on Yelp. This is my favorite place to eat in all of Tacoma. Oh yes. Not only is it absolutely delicious, it is healthy for you! In the years that the place has been open for business, they've never had to once scrape the grease off of their ceiling because the only meat they use is buffalo, which has less fat than Turkey. The place is a dive and has tons of buffalo paraphernalia to keep you interested while you wait for you order. My favoritest item on the menu is the "Flawless" burrito. It's a little spicy with the awesome garlic sauce that they make and sell. You can also purchase buffalo meat there in different forms like sausage, steak, or grounded. Typing this is making me hungry. read more

TLDR: Sandwiches were not quite as expected, but we'll definitely be stopping in to try more menu items. I've been wanting to check this place out for a long time and finally called in a take out order in our way out of Point Defiance Zoo. I'd like to eat in next time as the menu seemed more complete and descriptive in person than what I can access online. The gentleman who took my order and rang it up when I stopped in was friendly, and informed me of some fun things coming up like take-and-bake bison lasagne. Sounds rad. We ordered the bison melt, bison joe, spuds, potato salad and roasted veggies. The bison joe was not what I thought, although it was good. I had imagined essentially a sloppy joe with bison meat. What it is: bison meat, grilled onions and green peppers, ballpark mustard, and mayo served on a good burger bun. Surprised, but not disappointed. The bison melt had a good sauce on it. Wish it was served on a heartier bread. Maybe Texas toast. Would be worth an up charge. House-made potato salad would be accepted at my family reunion so that's a definite win. No sweetness, dill pickles. The spuds are perhaps a little too soft but fried and very well seasoned. Roasted veggies were great. Served with a cup of surprisingly spicy/garlicky marinara. Next time, I suspect I'll try the chili and I'm very interested in the lasagne offering. read more

What an interesting Tacoma restaurant! I'm not even sure how to describe this place. But, I'll try. It's a little kitschy, a little hole in the wall, and... Filled with bison-related decor! I ordered the taco salad, which was basically nachos with some lettuce on top. The bottom layer was tortilla chips with their bison chili and melted cheese. Then he added taco salad toppings to the mix. This was amazing. No complaints here! My husband had the bison burger, which he said was very good. This was a bit expensive, though. I'd eat here again. Solid food and a nice family establishment. read more

So I've never actually been inside Tatanka, and so can't speak as to the service or the ambience, but one night at work when my pharm tech suggested we get take-out AND offered to go pick it up, I was sold :) I tried the bison soup and the red skin potatoes with cheese and garlic hot sauce. SO GOOD. I can't believe I'd never tried bison before. My only complaints were the portion sizes - my soup was a tad too small (it was so delicious, I wanted more), and my potatoes were humongous! Holy carp, three meals worth of potatoes. Next time, I'll share with someone. read more

I've been coming to Tatanka for at least 5 years. Every time they never disappoint. I've had the HUUUUUGE burritos and of course their bison burgers. There shakes are out of this world. If you come here get a shake please. The owner is a very chill dude and very friendly and engaging. It's a very peaceful CLEAN place to enjoy a homemade meal. You must come here at least 1 time while your in Tacoma. read more

Impressive. Four star experience albeit a sparkling clean food truck from The Fort Restaurant near Denver foothills. Worth the drive up. Unique menu providing the dining experiences we miss do dearly the past year. Bravo Tatanka & fort staff. We will keep following the Buffalo truck! read more

Tatanka is home to buffalo burgers, wraps, and basically all other versions of buffalo one could want. They make a seriously delicious buffalo burger, with some great fries. It's a small place with a ton of little knick-knacks (and other food to order, I hear they do great vegetarian, too) but perfect take-out to take down the street to Point Defiance for an impromptu picnic. Prices are under $10, the staff is colorful, I only wish they were open past 6pm! read more

Terrible. Downright terrible. 3 burgers with chips and drinks is $45. And they're hockey puck, thin frozen patties burnt for our pleasure. I've gotten way better bison burgers for way cheaper in much more upscale establishments. Kich is what keeps this place alive. read more

Yummy! Try the taco salad, it is so fresh and tasty. Also the burrito is delish! I love all of the hot sauces on the back counter...I have to admit I am a condiment junky. Prices are a little on the steep side.....but what do you expect for healthier buffalo meat?! read more

Happened upon this gem! Food was incredibly flavorful and fresh! Mainly vegetarian and bison options which was a nice selection for what we were looking for. Staff was very friendly and offered us complimentary potato skins. Highly recommend and will return next time we are in town! read more

Cant believe it took me so long to try this place! Ordered the Flawless Burrito with bison. Crunchy greens, perfectly sauteed mushrooms and onions, and expertly cooked bison made for a delicious lunch. Also friendly and fast customer service. Definitely coming back! read more

I will never go back to this place again. I have been there several times during what is supposed to be business hours and they are always shut. I finally got there a few minutes before they were due to close at their usual early hour which makes no sense being that they serve food so you would think they would be open around dinner. Anyways I was shocked to see the open sign on and people inside so I decided to give it one last shot. As I walked up to the door a girl came and locked it with no expression on her face and just turned her back to me and shut the open sign off. It's businesses like this which are the reason Ruston is failing. It's too bad it's a cute place but it's a total waste of time since all the businesses are inconsistent and overpriced. read more

Tonight was my first visit to the quaint hometown establishment. I enjoyed my visit very much. The young man behind the counter was pleasant and you could tell he knew what he was talking about. I recently started the Whole30 and can't have sugar,dairy,soy,wheat or anything besically we love to eat but shouldn't.. before choosing a date night location I scanned menu's of various places in the area.. Tatanka is good right there when you order and when I asked about seasonings the cook/server was quick to answer and quick to comply when asked if he could not use one of the seasonings. I ordered the Bison Burger with no bun and no thousand dressing. He put extra tomatoes and lettuce on the plate. If I ad known that I wouldn't have had the side salad on the side. Of which I again asked for no dressing. He offered me some olive oil to drizzle on it based off of what other customers had done. I felt this was truly going above a typical server attitude. My husband also had the Bison Burger but with some grilled mushrooms and cheddar cheese and a bun.. and the spuds.. he enjoyed his meal and wants to go back and try the bison melt.. Thank you very much for a very enjoyable meal 13 days into my whole30 expierence. read more

Yeaaah!! Was feeling adventurous, well really just told to eat here by the driver of my car so we went! I got the nachos! Yeah your typical nachos piled high with everything and black olives, woof! But after removal I got to the goods and was super pleased. Had a side of potatoes and put their BBQ sauce all over them. Super delish. I suggest this place for sure. read more

I live close by here and always drove by this place. Since my son is a new vegetarian, and I love Bison, I figured we would stop by and try it. My son loved the Veggie Burger, I had the regular Bison Burger, and I thought it was real good. The potato Salad was amazing! the chef was super nice and pleasant. If not for the novelty of serving bison meat, this business would be just another mediocre hamburger joint. I suspect the meat is long-frozen. Prepared with no seasoning, perhaps some salt. In all other respects a mediocrity: hours, amenities, service, sides, seasonings. Take out so not much seating. Not good for groups. Not worth a second visit. read more

The bison burgers are tasty, but 99% of the time I order the "Flawless Burrito", because it's awesome. I went there once with my ex, who asked the lady who runs the place if she could have the Flawless Burrito without onions. The lady replied "well then it wouldn't be Flawless anymore, now would it?" Our group of five stopped off at Tatanka Take-Out (we ate in for lunch) on our way to Point Defiance Park for delicious buffalo burgers, buffalo burritos, a BBQ buffalo burger as well as a very nice root beer float. We got the Esquites and the Barbacoa Nachos to split and we loved both. Both were packed full of flavor and the barbacoa is so tender! And they don't skimp on the toppings, either. The vibe itself is super fun with mirrors, sparkly walls, and an overall comfortable dive aesthetic. And the cherry on top is that this place is crazy affordable on prices. For our two food items, and 3 beers and a shot each, we only racked up a $65 after tip. My husband had to triple check that they didn't miss anything! So glad we finally got to come here and we'll definitely be back.

My favorite restaurant in Tacoma. I try to get here at least once a week. 15+ years of this small business fueling both my pre and post-workout meals. Extremely healthy bison and maybe just a little less healthy potato salad to add that balance. My go to order is the Bison Dip or the Buster, but also love the burritos, tacos, and nachos. The owner puts in maximum effort with his cooking, engaging customers, quality, and friendliness. A true staple and standard of north Tacoma. Check the hours and have some patience as this is a single owner/operator business. If you are a hockey fan, this is also a wonderful spot to chat about the local and pro teams. Oh, my... the photos on here don't even do this place justice. I get bison tacos, and there is a special sauce or maybe it's just the combination of juices that makes them totally out of this world. They fill you up very quickly, but they aren't expensive, and it's THE BEST lunch you can come across. They also have fun little sides to choose from and my favorite chips.
