First time trying BBQ focused restaurant and it did not disappoint! The menu is quite large & lots of variety! The restaurant has self seating and is roomy! The food... the sides are so delicious and LARGE PORTIONS!!! I loved the potatoes & slaw!! The meat... we got chicken & ribs... and the ribs are so tender it was delicious!! The portions here are super generous, we had lots of leftovers. Everything was hot, fresh, & juicy!!

As others have stated, I would put this place at 3.5 stars but will round up. The place is on the pricey side for what you're getting. I ordered the BBQ brisket. It was sliced super thin (think deli meat) and was on the dryer side. The star of the show went to the cornbread.... Wow that was good! My wife ordered the pulled pork and she loved it. The restaurant was super clean. They offer complimentary soft serve ice cream and different syrups to make unique drinks. Very unique and a cool idea.

Great BBQ, service was quick, and everything was tender and flavorful. I really liked their sauce bar and free unlimited ice cream bar. I didn't see on their menu where you could just get brisket, or chicken or a specific meat, but it may have been there and I missed it. We got the three meat meals with the sides of Mac and cheese, baked potato salad, and baked beans. The Mac and cheese was a must have, the baked potato salad was better then average but tbh I make better potato salad at home, the baked beans were meh, I could have missed them and not been disappointed.

Spicy Chop Sandwich Fries Cornbread Muffin w/ Honey Butter

I'm not gonna lie, I miss the ladder with the honey drop from the OG BBQ Pete's on Portland and 72nd. It was such a mesmerizing experience as a kid. That being said, the food is good. It is a bit pricey. $4.59 for a cornbread muffin. Don't get me wrong, the muffin makes me happy and is tasty. But it's a bit much, I should really just up my game and develop the skills to make my own delicious little cornbread muffin lovelies. The atmosphere is laid back with the sauce bar and pickles. This lactose unfriendly girlie did not partake in the free soft serve, but the wee humans would be all over that and so would the lactose friendly adults. Overall, I might go back, it's decent just a bit pricey to me.

    Burnt end pieces received.

I've been here a few times and have generally thought it was okay. Definitely not Texas quality but still good. However I ordered my husband burnt ends Togo for dinner, got home and this is what we unpacked... 5 pieces!! We've ordered this before and it was a standard amount so this was really surprising and disappointing.. for $30 this wasn't okay at all. And seeing as though it was the end of the night I'd understand if we were told they were running low, but we specifically asked if they still had some for a full order and they said yes.

    Ribs, beans and coleslaw

Such a fun little find. We had just flown in and on the way to Joint base louis Mchord. we wanted a quick dinner. I ordered the ribs with beans and coleslaw. The service was super quick and awesome. The ribs were fall of the bone tender with a sauce that had a hint of cinnamon. The beans were so good. Almost chili and definitely something I will always rave about. The coleslaw was always crisp, slightly sweet and tangy. I took off a point for the super peppery ranch. Wasn't a fan, nor was anyone else. Everyone else raved about their food. One thing the kids loved was the free soft serve ice-cream!

$5.49 side of fries, filled half way, to the line
    Just I.

I'll start with pricing. $23.58 for a sandwich and fries with added slaw topper. Prices have increased everywhere, this seems a bit pricey still though. Fries were good, fresh and seasoned well. The variety of sauces you can dispense yourself is good as well. I ordered the brisket sandwich. Just not impressed at all unfortunately. It has enough meat, the bun was soft. The flavor was not that good to me. This is my third visit and I've just felt their food is ok. Service was ok. Overall nothing stands out about this place except their prices. Note: sides are $5.49, see pic of fries, urge bag was about 1/2 full. This includes a cornbread muffin or side of coleslaw. They have complimentary ice cream but if your not paying attention you may miss it as no one mentions this. I ordered takeout once and dine in once before and only found out about the ice cream from another customer.

The interior photos on Yelp don't do the space justice. It's actually pretty cute inside, especially when it was decorated top to bottom for the holidays! I love the sauce bar, the complimentary ice cream, the window seating, and the wide hand-washing station to clean yourself off after a messy meal. It's always a little strange when the dining area is well-themed but the brightly-lit stainless steel kitchen is exposed and visible. The menu seems to be about twice as large as it needs to be, since many items seemed very similar. We got the Smokestack and the Sandwich With No Name and while they were both delicious, the difference between them was subtle. When you buy a sandwich, you can choose two sides to go along with it. One of my sides was wrong, but they were gracious about fixing the order for me. It's an order-at-the-counter joint, but it's priced closer to a tableside service restaurant. A dollar or two off the meal pricing would be a bit fairer. I can imagine this place is great for parties, but the long communal tables make it a harder sell for a couple's meal.

Found this staple in my food. Got lodged in my teeth. It was in the BBQ pork.

I literally ate everything on my plate. Then we came back on a Saturday early evening. And the food tasted old. I noticed when I was checking my receipts on Saturday. The guy has said oh you don't have to tip because you're a huge party. When a party of six your tip is automatically included which is the 18%. and I was like oh wow we had six on Tuesday and I left a $25 cash tip. And he said although waiter should've told you it's automatically taken out and the 18% was already taken care of. And I was like no I handed the waitress $25 cash and she never said 18% was taken out and I didn't pay attention to my receipt cause I had children with me but then when I looked back in my car on Saturday night from Tuesday, I realize that she double charged me. So on Tuesday she got over a $50 tip. The waitress on Tuesday she was a Hispanic lady with dark black hair. She robbed me. So please be aware you're going with the party of six or more. They automatically take out 18% gratuity. And I did not like that because she should've told me that you don't have to leave cash. She knew my kids were crying and I was trying to yo leave and not distract the other guest. But on the positive note, the place is nicely decorated. And service is good. I just felt robbed, so for that fact I will never ever be coming back. If you were looking to try this place for the first time come early if you want hot fresh food. If you come later in the evening, the food does taste old.

Their spread included small bites of chicken and waffles, but because of my dietary preferences, I only sampled the waffles. I have to say I left that day feeling a bit disappointed, but I decided to give them another chance in the future. Fast-forward to this past spring for my college graduation party. For my food spread, I employed a mini "taste of the Tacoma-themed spread" with Buddy's as one of the options. I decided to order catering services from them. I have to say they really messed up. The order was placed and paid for three days in advance for pick-up (6 combos & 2 waffles). Their order wasn't ready; however, they made amends and comped us several items that we did not order for the inconvenience. More importantly, most of my guests from all across the U.S. spoke very highly of the chicken and waffles. That day I tried only the Strawberry Shortcake Waffle, and I once again felt unimpressed. But yesterday...yesterday was different. They say the third time is a charm. I arrived 30 minutes before closing, so I could only get carryout service. I was going to go with the options I've already tried: Blueberry and Strawberry Shortcake Waffles. While browsing the menu, I saw the Banana Cream Pie Waffle on the special board and decided to give it a try. This moment is where the story takes a significant turn. This is by far the best waffle I've had in the US. The waffle was amazingly fresh and crispy, coupled with a perfect blend of softness, a sprinkling of wafer crumbs, and bananas. This is by far my favorite waffle in all of Tacoma. In fact, anywhere in the world. I will give it a 20/10. If you are a vegetarian, I'd recommend ordering a serving of the crispy "Salt and Pepper Tofu" appetizer from Indo Asian Street Eatery to pair with these waffles. The pairing will get you close to or similar to the experience of the chicken strip pairing. I assure you there is no drop-off. My only complaint is paying $13 for a waffle. The waffle is a very nice size, and I do understand given current prices and the cost of doing business, but with $13 you can make several waffles in-house. But make no mistake. This is definitely worth it.

The hostess/server asked us if we wanted anything to drink and I asked for water and coffee. I was surprised that she came out with a carafe of coffee!! All for me!! I guess it saves them time from going around the room refilling eveyones cup. We took a little time to look over their extensive breakfast offerings. They do offer senior items but it didn't say what age qualifies as 'senior'. Maybe 55? 60? Not sure. I ordered a pancake and my daughter ordered a vegetarian omelette with hash browns. We just decided to share our food. The omelette was packed with onions, mushrooms, bell peppers and cheese and was very good. The hash browns were crispy, just the way I like it. The meal also came with your choice of toast, biscuit or sourdough and my daughter chose the sourdough. She said it tasted old so she didn't take a second bite of it. The pancake was yummy. Really no complaints about it. The exterior and interior of the restaurant lives up to its name. The building is a big red barn. The interior is all wood and I think they only have booths. My bill was $88 and some change. I tipped $20 in CASH so on the receipt I wrote "cash" on the tip line then the total ($88.xx) on the total line. I woke up the next morning to an additional $20 tip added to my credit card for a total of $108 on my card + the cash tip. I immediately called as soon as I saw the charge (10am) and the woman who answered the phone was extremely catty. She took my number, told me the manager/owner was out and would return my call within a couple hours. I gave it until 12:45, called again, and was told he was still out. Between my husband and I, we had to call SIX times to get ahold of a manager/owner. It took 7 hours to get hold of the manager/owner Kevin -- who was apparently grocery shopping for 7 hours according to his staff. Initially I was only asking for the extra $20 the waitress had taken from me back but after having to disrupt my entire day and deal with this horrible experience for subpar food, we asked for a full refund. I woke up this morning (8/21) to a $0.00 credit being returned to my card. LOL We own a restaurant and have a combined 30+ years experience in food & bev. This experience has been shameful on Homestead's part. The subpar guest experience was not enough to complain about on its own but it has been INCREDIBLY frustrating to take time out of our busy schedules trying to get ahold of someone to fix this issue. While the tip refund is appreciated, we are in the right to ask for a full refund. At this point, we will be disputing the entire charge with our bank and will never return.
