I visit viet kitchen about 1x/week! I usually order SP4. Banh hoi thap cam to-go. This is a vermicelli noodle sheet dish with grilled pork, shrimp, and grilled pork sausage! The grilled pork is my favorite part! The serving size is huge so it could definitely feed 1.5 people. I usually eat about 75% in one sitting and save 25% later. The other dish I order if I'm eating at the restaurant is R9. Fish tamarind sour soup and Caramelized braised fish with rice. This is a staple I had when I was younger and ate out at Vietnamese restaurants. The food here is truly authentic Vietnamese! The prices for some of the dishes are also very reasonable for Tacoma. A banh mi (Vietnamese baguette) only costs $9. In addition, there's free and easy parking in front of the restaurant, happy hours from 2-6 pm Monday through Friday, and catering! I completely forgot to take a picture of my food because I was way too hungry! When we first sat down, they completely forgot to bring us menus, so we had to ask for them. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue, and I really appreciated that they were able to make substitutions since I don't eat pork blood. I also mentioned multiple times that I didn't want cilantro, but when my soup came out, it was covered in cilantro. They took it back and picked most of it out, but there was still quite a bit at the bottom of the soup. I really don't like cilantro, so I tried my best to eat around it. Despite that, the broth was AMAZING. It had the perfect spicy kick and so much flavor. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the crab balls tasted like they were made with real crab. They also gave me a generous amount of meat, which I loved! The fresh coconut was also so good! Since we're in Washington, we probably won't get the freshest coconut like you would somewhere tropical, but it definitely did the job. I wish I could give them 3.5 stars. It probably deserves a bit more than 3, but there are a few pet peeves that just won't let me give it 4. For the good. The food is quite good. The rib pho is great, so is the brisket. I appreciate it's not completely raw when you do take out, I think that can get kinda suspect, if you're not paying attention to the broth temp. No complaints on the bahn mi. The pork was Pretty good, wouldn't have minded a bit more veg. I also like their drinks a lot. Very flavorful, the flavors seem fresher than many other places, unlike some that are so clearly just flavored powder. Now for my issues. The mushroom appetizer has great texture, but is pretty flavorless. I feel pretty neutral about it. The staff seems kind of lost, I've had them have a really hard time when I've ordered, and I've tried my best to annunciate things exactly as they are on the menu, but still there's usually a bit of awkward confusion, and I've even gotten the wrong drink a free times as a result. I can acknowledge it's probably a language barrier and not an incompetence issue, so not their fault. I just don't feel like they're familiar enough with menu. I've been given inaccurate and inconsistent information from different staff about what they offer. They also have a huge menu of drink add-ins but not having many of the options available is pretty standard. I've gone there about 5 times in the last 2 months in total, and every single time they've been out of tapioca pearls. This obviously isn't the worst thing a restaurant can do, it's just a bummer because I actually really love the flavor of the drinks, but if you're never going to have an item, just take it off the menu, its always a let down :/ I'll likely go back, it's still good, there are just a few quality of life things that are just too annoying for me to give them a stellar rating. read more

Got the quang noodles, which Nathan said is an uncommon dish to be featured in Vietnamese restaurants in the states. That rice cake shared appetizer was sooooo good. Honestly would eat that for days. Lee and Nathan loved their dishes , too. Finished it so quick. Genuinely impressed me bc we were talking so much. Staff is attentive with the water refills and takeaways of finished plates. Knew how to do so without interruptions to the conversations taking place at our table. I hear that this place does karaoke nights, too, so hopefully they have that the next time that we all come by here. I had high exceptions for this restaurant but I was disappointed. We were seating around 1:45pm and it was somewhat busy but nothing too crazy. We waited for an HOUR for our food. We ordered the deep-fried mushrooms and green mango prawn salad as our appetizers and we didn't even get those to start with. Everything came all at once. The mushrooms were cold and the salad was underwhelming. It wasn't much of a salad, it just had the prawns, bigger slices of mango which were soft and didn't have the crunch, sprinkles of carrots and that was about it. Pho: They advertised their broth is made for 24 hrs but it did not taste like it. It didn't have the depth of the flavor it should have if it's on the stove for that long. The ribs did not have any flavor and were not cooked properly. The meat should be falling off the bone and it was hard to chew through. I was craving good Vietnamese food and I was thinking VK Kitchen which is popular in the Lincoln District. When I went to find it, the map took me to this spot which confused me. Apparently, this is owned by the family and is an extension. What I love about this place is that it's big, good parking, and food is authentic! I've never had rice noodles this way. They are rice sheets- and wow this meat plate was sooooo good! Definitely try. This is the newest location of VK Viet Kitchen (Tacoma, WA). This particular restaurant is in a small strip mall off I-5. Inside is clean and they have TVs playing anime music. Service is quick and attentive. They were quick to seat us, get our orders in, and keep our waters topped off. Food also came out quickly and hot. The pho is exceptional, just like at the original location. They have a solid portion of meat in the large bowls. My noodles were unfortunately a little overcooked and tended to fall apart but flavor was good. We had enough for leftovers with ordering two large bowls for two adults. The Mi Quang broth was extremely oily and bland. We didn't know what to expect from the Ginger Chicken based on the description, but we ended up getting a very saucy chicken stir fry. So, when I saw on their Instagram that the second location was having their soft opening, I had to come in first thing when they opened at 10:00 a.m. this morning. They're 8 minutes away from me! I got the Bo Ne (Dodging Beef) because that's something that you absolutely need to try in person. It was absolutely amazing. Then, I had to get the Mango Sticky rice. $6.95! I won't know anywhere else's that you can get this for under $11. It was so delicious. Other dishes I've tried from their Tacoma location (on Door Dash) was the Banh Canh (Vietnamese Udon), Beef Stew, Bun Mam (Fermented Fish Noodle), Vermicelli Noodle Salad Bowl - all are delicious. The number one reason why I keep ordering from them, and also continue to visit their new location: they have dishes that many other typical Viet restaurants don't have. I think this is a second location for this restaurant, however, I had not tried the other location prior to this. Walking in the interior is very large and there is a ton of seating. I was seated quickly and the server was very friendly. I had the green mango salad and the beef stew special. I had assumed the salad would be small as it was not 8$ but it was actually enough food that it could have been a whole meal for me, it comes with shrimp or tofu so you get protein in it too. I loved the salad and I think it is going to be my new go to for lunch when I'm in the area. The stew was also delicious and had a very generous portion of beef. The thing I really loved about this place is that they had a lot of different Vietnamese food options that you can't find at other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. It was a lot more than just pho and bahn mi (although they have that too). The food here is absolutely amazing, but the service experience was incredibly frustrating. We visited on a Sunday afternoon with only 2 servers working, and their lack of awareness and common sense was disappointing throughout our meal. Despite multiple attempts to get their attention for basic necessities--spoons, scissors for the squid, napkins--they consistently avoided looking our way. When we finally flagged someone down about the squid, they simply told us they were out of scissors and brought us steak knife later, leaving us to deal with a whole uncut squid on our own (should be easy with scissors but was difficult with butter/steak knife). Any server with basic common sense would have offered to cut it in the kitchen first or at least apologized and suggested an alternative solution. While the servers were polite when directly engaged, their overall inattentiveness and lack of problem-solving made what should have been an enjoyable dining experience feel frustrating and neglected. The food quality is outstanding, but the service needs significant improvement in awareness and basic hospitality skills. read more

A note, the mango salad still has the skin on the mango for a chewier texture than many western palates might expect - not a downside, just a heads up for texture opinionated people.
