The more I spend time exploring Tacoma, the more I am loving it! Take this winner of a well-run family-owned restaurant in the Lincoln District of Tacoma. It looks unassuming on the outside, but it is all heart on the inside. You can tell this restaurant has been well-loved in this neighborhood for years-- 28 years in fact! I dug the community vibes and organized hustle and bustle atmosphere. We sat at the counter because it was a full house with many more customers waiting in line to get a table. I'm so glad we sat at the counter-- best seats in the house IMO because we got to chat with the friendly staff and get a close-up view of some entertaining behind the scenes action. I highly recommend the Combo Plate ("Cơm Thập Cẩm" that's comprised of roast duck, roasted pork, and BBQ pork over steamed rice with pickled veggies and their house sauce). Ohmygosh, what a treat!!! Everything tasted so good and the service was welcoming and efficient. It was a lot of food so I took about half of it to go. Including a stuffed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf that was in a pile next to me and looked too irresistible for me not to take at least one home. It has hanging meat in its window like a classic Chinatown take out restaurant but it's run by a Vietnamese family and has a Vietnamese-themed mural on the wall. They play electro dance music and the TV just cycles between short clips of cities like Rio de Janiero. Nothing is particularly cohesive but service is very friendly and they show up where it counts, the food. Food: I'm an American born Chinese kid from California and the food here could go head to head with anything in San Diego or LA. The broth is clean and simple Chinese style soup, not too salty and perfectly reduced. They load the bowls with tons of protein and are very flexible with whatever combination of proteins you want. The cha sui is perfect with just the right amount of sweet glaze and a touch of char to keep it interesting. The roast pork has one of the crispiest skins I've had which you can just let soak in the broth to your desired consistency. The duck is moist, tender, and relatively meaty (sometimes restaurants source scrawny ducks which are mostly bone). The weakest part of dish is the which have that store-bought taste and could be fresher and slightly more al dente. They whip plates up super fast. The staff were incredibly kind despite the crowd. I had the duck noodle soup and I have been craving this kind of noodle soup for literally years. Move over pho and ramen, give me this one any day. My husband devoured his roasted duck lunch plate with rice. One of the chefs saw I had saved the duck for last and whipped up a dipping sauce for me that was amazing.
