I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised by Tasty. It lived up to its name mostly. First off, the veggie spring rolls didn't hit the mark at all. They were very bland and mushy chunk of deep fried mush. Bad start, one star. The three tofu dishes hit the mouth and the belly much more nicely. Briefly, the General Tso"s tofu had a sweet sauce that wasn't overpoweringly syrupy and it had a slight kick to it: pretty good, three and a half to four stars. I'd order it again, but I'd want to try other things first. Even better were the salt and pepper tofu and the basil tofu. Both had more spice as well as more flavor overall, made in a very hot wok, as a stir fry should be. I would give these both five stars and I'd order them again anytime. Portions were big and a good value for the price. They had a decent selection of veg dishes, all with veggies or tofu as the options. It's counter service here. The woman was nice. It's clean, small and no frills here if you decide to dine in, which was a surprisingly good choice as well: divey, as you might think, but clean and pleasant. I'd go back. Ordering for pick-up from this location was quick and easy. I placed my order over the phone and was able to pay when I got to the restaurant. My order was General Tso's Chicken and Beef Lo Mein. Both were a solid 7/10-- not life changing but definitely satisfied my cravings. The menu is priced fairly, as you get pretty hefty portions for what you pay. I'm here to add a positive review to the mix because I had a fantastic experience with my pickup order of Tofu and Mixed Vegetables and Vegetable Spring Rolls. We ordered our dish "cooked" (rather than steamed). Mixed Vegetable Delight is my partner and my baseline dish when we try a new Asian restaurant. Over time, we've developed our preferences for how the tofu is cooked, the mix of vegetables, and the flavor of the sauce. We were happy to find out that Tasty Asian's version checks all our boxes. The veggies were plentiful and chopped well, the broccoli was divine, and this was the first version we've had with zucchini in it which was a nice addition. The tofu was also tasty, and the sauce was lighter and more orange in color than other versions we are accustomed to, but the flavor was right up there. I had the worst craving for Chinese food at around 10 pm on a Friday night. I knew my delivery options would be geared to the late night drunk crowd so I had no idea what to expect when I placed my order. They use GrubHub which is easy to use and the delivery driver arrived plenty of time before the 1 hour window GrubHub usually states. The beef fried rice was fine and reasonably priced for a decent sized portion. It was a little greasy (the whole order was pretty damn oily) but tasty. I also ordered the appetizer combo to get to the minimum order value and it seemed like a good way to try a few things! The good- the egg rolls (super greasy but great tasting!), the chicken sticks (basically chicken teriyaki) and the shrimp tempura (great batter). The less good- crab rangoons (I don't really like them) and the mini sausage sticks (super random inclusion and nothing special). I wish they would allow substitutions on this combo but even not liking all the components, it's a decently priced item. The dining area is clean and that is important to me because I fear what's going on in the kitchen if they can not keep a few tables clean in the front. This is not a place you would choose to go to dine in but it's poor decor is adequate for waiting for your order. I phoned in the Orange Chicken and Shrimp fried rice ($18) and I agree with many of the other reviewers. The Orange sauce taste watered down. Not lightly spiced or lightly sweetened but watered down and that was very disappointing. Also, the shrimp fried rice was salty. I typically add soy but there was no need and I found it enjoyable. Beef and broccoli- They made the beef spicy as asked, and it had a respectable beef to broccoli ration. 4/5, simply because it was $12, and the portion itself wasn't overly-generous. Egg drop soup- great size for the price (about $5), and delicious. Perfect color and consistency, and it wasn't bland like soup egg drop soups are. 5/5 Sweet and sour chicken with fried rice- Holy crud it was definitely worth the price for the gigantic portion. The fried rice had egg in it, and was almost a meal in itself. My friend did comment that it was a little salty, but not enough to deter him from eating most of it. Plus, they packaged everything separate, so the chicken didn't sit in the sauce and get soggy. 4.5/5 Overall it would be a 4.5, but I'm rounding down simply because it wasn't cheap. Everything all together including tip (yes people, throw a dollar in the jar even if it's takeout. Employees were all in the restaurant. Just stared at us and would not open the door. We knocked asking to be let in. Apparently, our business did not matter. I was pretty disappointed with the food that I received. I ordered the shrimp fried rice, crab rangoons, and egg rolls, which are my typical go to Chinese food picks. I usually have high expectations for all of these items as I know there are many places that do a good job. However I chose tasty Asian as it is the closest to my apartment and I didn't feel like moving my car and losing my parking spot. The shrimp felt a little rubbery, possibly they were over cooked, and the rice was ok but nothing special. The egg rolls had a unusual taste to them, and I couldn't really pinpoint the weird taste. The crab rangoons were pretty good, however they are mostly just the fried shell so you aren't really getting a lot of the filling, which is the main point of them. I said, no thanks if you can please just give us tap water. She didn't give and said they didn't have cups or glasses which is unbelievable that at a restaurant they won't have glasses. Best Chinese I've ever had in Chicago. And I've had A LOT of Chinese food. I've only ever done pick up and it's always so hot that I have to wait a few min to eat it even after I get home. The portions are huge so two people can definitely share the same entree. You can also substitute fried rice for $2 instead of white rice for every entree. The food is not extra greasy (obviously anything fried is going to be a tad greasy) and the beef & broccoli is my favorite. Egg rolls are also great. I place the order and they charge my card. 30 minutes later I receive a call back saying they can't deliver to me because I am out of their delivery zone. I say, why am I just finding this out now and what are you going to do about the charge on my card. They have no answer as to why they took so long to let me know, other than that he is "new". As far as the money, they say the money will be put back onto your card in 3 to 5 days. Sweet! Ok so I will never order from this place again. Thought I would try this place out after getting a flier attached to my door. There was a coupon for Orange Chicken, only $5.99. I ordered through GrubHub (note: if you want to use a coupon, do NOT order through grubhub. They will not accept the coupon. Found that out AFTER the fact and G.H. would not honor the coupon) The orange chicken is fantastic (although I order it unbreaded and extra spicy) and their fried rice is the best I have had in the city (so far). I also ordered the szechuan chicken which was not spicy at all and very bland HOWEVER, it was cooked very well. Delivery was fast and friendly. PART TWO: I wrote Part One of my review (below) the same night I stopped in and bought the food. It took two days before I felt well enough to sit at the computer to come back and revise it to include Part Two. I see from other online reviewers I'm not the only one this happened to at this restaurant. I have been sickened on bad food a few times, but I rank this among the absolute worst episodes I've ever encountered. I had extreme nausea all night. I was finally able to heave everything up the next morning -- quite a relief. But I am still out of sorts more than 48 hours later. You folks had better take a serious look at your kitchen area and cooking staff. ------------------- PART ONE: This fairly new little place is clean, with a polite and friendly staff, and the service was very fast. But as for the food, about the best I can say is that it was a tad better than going hungry. My take-out consisted of two egg rolls (none included with any entree that I could find on the menu), and an order of General Tso chicken, which came to just a few pennies shy of 15 bucks. I live exactly three blocks from the place, and this happens to be a cold winter night. But even so, I can't imagine the egg rolls getting so stone-cold so fast. They had to go into the micro first thing. Unfortunately, that didn't help much. I ate about two-thirds of the first one, and tossed the rest. Sub-par egg roll. Grade "D." As for the chicken dish, I'd give it a grade of "just adequate, but no more -- C-minus." Although a few of the pieces were fatty, most of it was lean; it was reasonably hot temperature-wise; and the breading was fresh/not soggy, compared to what you usually get with a carry-out of any breaded dish. But it may as well have been made with fast-food "chicken tenders." There was nothing in the way of the usual Chinese spices to give it any zip. Boring and bland. I dished up about half of the boxed portion over rice, and "cleaned my plate" of that much, but I tossed out the remaining half. That sounds like a comment in itself, but I'm not trying to say it was terrible -- just that going back for seconds held absolutely no appeal. And warming it up as next-day left-overs? Forget it. If you can imagine McDonald's putting Chinese food on their menu, that about describes it: I basically had a General Tso Quarter Pounder. For what I paid, I'd call this pretty disappointing.
