It was a pleasant surprise to learn that Tarry Tavern shares the same owner as its neighbor Eatarry, a great breakfast cafe. Tarry Tavern had a rustic and cozy atmosphere with beautiful and vibrant dishes that were equally as delicious as they were pleasing to the eyes. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. A great neighborhood dining option. However, there is something about food and price worth mentioning. The food was really delicious, but confusing to see a hand written check with prices that do not correspond to the prices on their menu (both online menu and physical menu in restaurant). Unexpectedly, don't ask me why, we had an absolutely perfect meal here! Took Metro North to meet friends in Tarrytown. They'd made a 6:00 res on a quiet Tuesday evening and we arrived earlier, even got a parking spot on the street! At that time, the restaurant was nearly empty; by about an hour later, it was filling up rapidly. We were given menus and served water and not rushed. After a few minutes, we did order drinks. I asked for a non-hoppy beer (no IPAs for me!) but the one he gave me was too bitter. When I said something, my beer was immediately and without question replaced by one I liked. It was then quite a while as we sipped, and chatted with our friends. While talking we were looking at a very appealing menu and trying to figure out our choices, not an easy task! Finally we ordered; we loved that even as more people came in, we were never rushed. I started with a good gazpacho, and had the duck for my entree. The soup was artistically presented: a bowl was put in front of me, in its center a small pile of what looked like microgreens. Then the server poured the creamy red-orange gazpacho around that little pile, which, as I ate, revealed itself to have bits of avocado and nuts, and maybe also onion and/r garlic - it was beautiful to look at and marvelous to eat! My duck meal was served over a delicious and generous pile of wild rice. I have to say, the portions are good and the flavor, preparation and presentation are excellent here. My companions felt the same. Two had the burrata appetizer, served over colorful slices of summer fruit. Other entrees at our table were a strip steak so large he couldn't finish it, and the bran into that both who had it loved. Also maybe a larger portion Han you might get elsewhere. Nobody had room for dessert, though if we had more time we probably would've had tea/coffee - but my husband and I had a train to catch. I would definitely eat here again. Been meaning to try a few restaurants around town outside of our normal haunts. One of the things that bugs me about the restaurants on Main St is how few take reservations. Tarry Tavern does though, so we made that next on the list. The inside is nice enough however we decided to sit outside. Wasn't many people around. Service was a bit disjointed between inside/outside which is admittedly hard on a quiet weekday, however it was very friendly. I got a beer, a boulevardier, and my wife got 2 sangrias. Don't ask me how that totaled $56 on the bill. It drives me nuts that restaurants followed the mixology bars to charge more for drinks (and no, it isn't freaking inflation). Beer was very good (Founders Breakfast) however the boulevardier was very average (I do better at home). For an appetizer we got the burrata. I like that it came with peaches, but otherwise was underwhelmed. Very small piece of burrata, especially for the $$$, which was not especially creamy. Could've used a bit more on the dish to make it flavorful (even more balsamic). For my main I got the duck breast with cherry/pecan wild rice, sunchoke Purée & baby carrots. I don't think I've had duck cooked medium that was this well crisped up before. Not the biggest portion (again, a theme) however what was plated was very well done. Rice was great and sunchoke puree was refreshing even if not the richest I've had. Carrots were fine. All in all a well done rendition. My wife got the short rib, which also gets good reviews here; I only managed some of the polenta which was good. I would come here again if invited, however the bill was like $100 per person. While pleasant enough, this wasn't worth that by any measure. No harm no foul, just an average-ish meal in town when I normally don't get out of the house, which in the end is fine by me. read more

I was in Tarrytown for a work trip for the first time in a little over two years. I had a couple of colleagues also staying in the area, so Yelp helped me pick a place for dinner. Score! Lovely ambience, friendly staff and delicious food. It happened to be St. Patrick's Day and there was also a (music) show just up the street. When I made the reservation, they asked me if we were going to the show....(assuming they were making sure we wouldn't be late). The restaurant was almost completely full when we arrived but quickly emptied out because most of the patrons were heading to to Tarrytown Music Hall. We all started with a bowl of soup...two of us had butternut squash soup and one had New England clam chowder. The bread in the basket was delicious and we all loved our soups. They had a special for St. Patrick's Day so two out of the three of us had the corned beef and raved about it. I had the tuna tartare with purple rice...delicious! The dessert menu looked wonderful but we all refrained. I will definitely dine here again. read more

Very cozy candlelit place, especially for an autumn date night. My boyfriend and I ordered two of their homemade pasta dishes, which came out quickly and tasted rich and delicious- especially the fettuccine with lamb bolognese. The ricotta cavatelli were pillowy soft and tasty, but the short rib was a just bit tough. I've also never seen arugula used as garnish for pasta before, but I liked the peppery taste it leant to the dish and will be trying it at home. My only problem with this place was that their prices were too high. I've gotten pasta just as good (if not better) for less in Manhattan. Still, it's a very good option if you're looking for a cozy spot in this area with delicious fresh pasta. I'd definitely come back next time we're in the area to try something new- I was really tempted by the duck with wild rice and cranberries, and some of their cocktails. read more

So my partner and I came here on a late Sunday evening. The staff were absolutely nice, professional and respectful. The interior was gorgeous. They have a very nice bar. They started off with some bread and butter. The bread was delicious. Our drinks were also very very good! Definitely not sweet or too strong. It was perfect. The food...WOW! It felt very homey-it felt just right. The portions were great. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. We came late Easter night and they did not rush us or anything. We had a really great time. Honestly and truly, I was so shocked that how good the food was here. Like really shocked. Shocked to my damn core! Wow, these flavors were amazing. I had octopus to start and it reminded me of the octopus I had when I was in Barcelona, so fresh with just the right amount of citrus taste to it. And for my entrée, I had tuna and that was so phenomenal. I had it raw and it came out so soft and fresh and well seasoned. I am completely appalled by the way I was treated at this establishment this past Tuesday. The food is actually amazing, so shoutout to the chefs! Prior to attending a show at the Tarrytown Music Hall this past Sunday June 11, 2023 and after scoping out 4 different restaurants that I researched earlier via Google,me and my girl stopped into The Tarry Tavern for dinner. We split the Portuguese Octopus and an iceberg wedge for appetizers, both were excellent. Our mains were a roasted Amish half chicken and the shrimp and leek ravioli with a pesto sauce, both dishes were outstanding. My Ketel One martinis with a twist were perfectly made in a full sized martini glass filled to the brim and my girlfriend's gin and tonic was served in a tall glass and looked absolutely refreshing. I noticed a large selection of draft beers (12 taps). Service was on point and I would definitely make a point to eat here again the next time I`m in Tarrytown. read more

This was so disappointing. The service was slow and cold by who we assume is the manager. The food came out lukewarm at best and the chicken and short rib were incredibly dry and chewy. The mashed potatoes were blended well but so bland. We were starving and couldn't finish the plates. No one came over to ask us how it was or we would have shared our let down. We waited 30 minutes for the check in a basically empty establishment. Now we see why! We stopped by this place after a nice walk at Mario Cuomo bridge (roundtrip) between Tarrytown and NJ. We got to this place around 2 pm on a Saturday and we missed the peak lunch period - got seated right the way. However, the wait for the food was very long - almost an hour. It was not us only - but we saw at least 2 other tables full of angry diners. We suspected that they are short-staffed in the kitchen. Not sure why we could not get water for free at the restaurant but had to pay for the bottled water and drinks - very strange. In any case, this family-owned restaurant tried hard but I don't think that I will come back here due to the not-so-pleasant experience. read more

During my second visit to Tarrytown, I stumbled upon Tarry Tavern with my girlfriend. It was a rainy Wednesday evening and the restaurant was quiet but caught my attention right away with the ambiance. I was definitley walking into an unforgettable experience. Once we were greeted and walked to my table by  whom I believe is the owner, we sat and opened up the menu to a long list of dinner possibilities. I was starving and I knew I needed to order something to satisfy my craving for a good meal. I choose the classic NY steak that comes with a side of potatoes (yum) and spinach (even more yum). And my girlfriend ordered their house burger. I asked for my steak to be cooked well done and well done and tasty it was! It was so juicy, tender and FULL of flavor. The sides that accompany the steak complimented each other perfectly. To top off my dinner, I ordered a peacan pie that comes served with local vanilla ice cream. My girlfriend ordered the chocolate brioche bread budding with vanilla ice cream. We were SO glad that we ended up ordering dessert. They were so fresh and just SO GOOD. The bread pudding is probably one of the best desserts I've ever had, honestly. I loved it. Not sure why this place doesn't have more stars. It's one of the best dining experiences I've ever had and the food was spectacular. Tarry Tavern is a true gem and on my list of must haves when I  go back to Tarrytown. read more

My friend and I went to a nice lunch in a sunny Sunday afternoon. We sit outside, taking advantage of the nice weather that day had. I loved the form that the butter had 'T' also the bread was very good. We share a few Appetizers: Octopus: warm octopus dish with Roasted Potatoes, Chickpea Purée, and Garlic & Olive Oil. It was delightful, good taste Stuffed calamari: with Black Forbidden Rice, Spicy Chouriço & Tomato Broth inside. I came here with some friends. The said that this was a favorite spot of theirs and I can see why. It is a family run restaurant with a strong Portuguese influence. Now, if you know anything about the Portuguese is that they can cook, and the culinary wizards in Tarry Tavern's kitchen are certainly proof of that axiom. My friends jumped into some of their favorite dishes, but I was satisfied with just ordering the chicken liver pate. The chicken liver was hearty and rich and went perfectly with the toasted baguette served on the side. My friends begged me to share a few bites of my pate, which I begrudgingly did, but next time this savory dish is all mine. My only regret in our visit is that I was hoping to see a wider selection of Portuguese soups on the menu, for the soups in Portugal are some of the best in the world. However, I got the feeling that their soup menu changes from time to time, so I am really looking forward to reuniting with some Caldo Verde or good bean soup. read more

Came here on 10/28 to have some appetizers and drinks with our group of 4. we ordered 2 appetizers and 4 drinks to start. we order and our waiter had a fit that we weren't ordering entrees..we were in disbelief, and still are. The waiter proceeded to throw his little note pad down and storm off.I wouldn't recommend this place at all. He said that we have to order entrees and everyone at the table had to order a cocktail. we all were unaware of this rule and left a 10 dollar tip for the free bread. hopefully they get rid of the waiter because this restaurant is going to lose a lot of business . Shady place! They hand wrote the bill and it just didn't add up right. Bill was 900.00 for 8 people and we knew it shouldn't be that high. They look the liberty of adding 20% tip "after" tax. That you do NOT do. Also they leave the prices off the desert and cocktails then bang you over the head with the prices on your check. The drinks?? Not good at all.
