I enjoy coming to this place when I am looking for a lighter, healthier meal. You know, when you just want something like a salad or sandwich, but are too lazy to make it yourself and just want to be out of the house anyway. There is indoor and outdoor seating with table service and a bar with a couple of seats. You can get coffee or some boozy drinks here. Finally a sunny and mild late-spring weekend! Rode the Link down to Columbia City and walked the tree-lined streets to the downtown core. We came down to grocery shop at PCC but got side-tracked and wanted some lunch first. We walked past Taproot (formerly Jus Bar), checked out the menu, and decided to grab some lunch here. Upon our entry we were greeted and able to sit where we wanted. On this visit, we didn't order any juices or smoothies, but the offerings all sounded good. There will be a next time... I ordered a Hickory smoked pastrami sandwich on toasted bread. Came recommended to me by our server. It was delivered to me with gooey, melted Swiss cheese, caramelised onions, sweet beaver mustard, and caraway sauerkraut. OH MAN! What a yummy sandwich. Chock full of fresh pastrami slices and hot/spicy mustard (my favourite part). I'm a huge fan of big, messy sandwiches, this one didn't get my fingers or face messy, but that doesn't mean it wasn't full of flavour, the complete opposite! The sandwich had the perfect balance of meat to condiment. This place deserves a queue out the door like CC Bakery or Geraldine's, so y'all need to get down here and patronise Taproot. read more

Ordered a daily special the blackened halibut sandwich and it hit the spot. Great flavor and decently priced. The tap list could be a lot better. Especially for IPA fans but the whiskey drink I ordered was decent. A bit slow service but that is the vibe here, lots of locals dining in small groups talking or reading and hanging out for a while. Five stars for the service and kindness! When eating with a child, sometimes they can be a bit...challenging. I appreciated the woman embracing the situation and using it to connect with my eating buddy and provide a great customer service. Along with this, the food was fantastic. The butternut squash and carrot soup was savory, sweet, and perfect for a winter evening. I enjoyed the quinoa and kimchi bowl which they allowed me to substitute the egg for tofu. I live in San Diego and came here for lunch with friends. We all got sandwiches, salads and drinks. The food and drinks were amazing! I would highly recommend this place. It didn't have the line out the door like other places in the area which was such a surprise after our visit. It has a nice vibe, great service, and yummy food. I really love this little juice, smoothie, sandwich, and coffee spot right in the heart of Columbia City - and just over a block from my house! Fresh and local ingredients in everything, and a good selection of bottled beverages including a few beers (not all local in this case). They serve Caffe Vita coffee. I've always been partial to the Northwestern sandwich as well as the Roast Chicken Club, both of which come with a tasty and light arugula side salad. I need to try the soups some day. As for juices, I've had the Green Gift of the Gods and either the beet or carrot, can't remember. The Green Smoothness smoothie is also good. I'm sure I would enjoy many others. I've always eaten there and find it relaxing, inside or out. The handful of small tables outside are great for when I have my dog with me, although he doesn't like the loud noises of Rainier. The staff is super nice and friendly, always making sure you have everything you need. I do wish they were open a bit earlier on weekdays so I could grab a smoothie on the way to work. I'm usually headed for the light rail between 8 and 8:45, and they don't open until 9. So that means I'm mostly here on weekends during the warmer months, when I think of having something cold and refreshing or a healthy sandwich in the sun. I can't figure out why this place is rated so highly. When I went in there it was pretty dead, getting a couple of smoothies should be easy, right? Only if you don't value your time. After 15 mins. of waiting I decided to go check on the status since making 2 smoothies really shouldn't take that long - especially when the place isn't even at ¼ capacity. When I got to the counter it was a bit of a mess. They had messed up one order and other people were looking impatient. Apparently my order was finished but had be left to rot. The look on the worker's face told me that he knew he screwed up. Did he apologize or acknowledge that he screwed up? Nope! Just handed me my order as if everything was good. The smoothie itself was better than the service, but not good enough to make me want another one. The price tag on the experience makes it even worse - definitely not worth it. read more

The food was fantastic, five star smoked salmon, crisp vegetables in a peppery, vibrant salad, and simple but perfect chocolate chip cookie. We had fresh squeezed juice which is one of their focuses. The service is friendly and was quick, although it was a slow time for them. The atmosphere was chill. I only hesitate with 5 stars because the room could be more physically comfortable. Love this place! They try to use local ingredients (Shipwreck honey, Washington apples, etc.) in their juices, which I totally appreciate. And unlike some other "juice" places (cough...Jamba Juice), you will find no ice cream/frozen yogurt here. Just fresh fruits and veggies! Buy 10 juices/smoothies and get one free. The menu recently changed. The Kamikaze used to be my favorite juice, but now it's gone (why??), and the Awareness (blueberry, blackberry, kale, avocado, flax, and apple juice) smoothie has taken my top spot. The Immunity (honey, apple, orange, lemon, cayenne, ginger, garlic) is good, but I usually get it without the garlic (that's a little bit too intense for me). Every time I go in I look at the sandwich menu and vow to come back for lunch (Cuban tofu panini! Hickory smoked pastrami!!). But I haven't had the chance yet. They also serve local beers and wines. One last thing: Jus Bar is a great spot to bring kids as they have a cute little kids corner. Yay! Jus Bar is the perfect neighborhood hangout spot! read more
