Most of the people who have been to Porto visit this restaurant! The restaurant is also near the Sao Bento Station, you can find it easily. I recommend you to make a reservation and visit because it's always full. But if you can't make a reservation, the owner will be as considerate as possible. Most visitors enjoy eating and recommending duck steak and mixed seafood. I've visited several times and tried various foods. Fantastic meal! Made a reservation and had a table waiting for us upstairs. Service was good until the end of the night when we couldn't find our server. Somebody else had to bring us our check. I had the tiger prawns which were excellent, cooked in a great garlic and oil sauce. Wife had the seafood curry. Green sauce and monkfish (excellent) clams, shrimp and another white fish. If I could give this restaurant 10 stars I would but 5 will have to do. I came here directly after San Sebastián sad that I didn't stay a day longer to experience the amazing food. To my surprise, Isabel surpassed all my expectations and went above and beyond with her amazing food and company. I ordered the foie gras toastie and it was one of the best things I've ever had in my life keep in mind I love foie gras and have had it in both Paris and San Sebastián. Not only was it one of the most amazing dishes I've ever had but she also paired it with an amazing port wine for me to try. If our flight hadn't cancelled due to a pilot strike we never would have had the chance to experience this great restaurant. Oh how I wish we had discovered it earlier than our last night in Porto! We showed up late in the evening (after 9pm) so there were some menu items already sold out and the place was packed. It took quite a while to get our menus and a first drink order in but after that, this place was unstoppable. One of the best places I've been! The service was amazing. I tried getting in one evening but every hour was booked but the lady at the front promised I could come back in the afternoon the next day despite their busy schedule. She recognized me the following day and had me immediately seated. The food was awesome! I ordered the mushroom appetizer and the tomato bruschetta along and had the shrimp risotto for dessert. This restaurant provides you a wonderful service that makes you feel welcomed and special. I'm giving 4 stars based on what I ordered - the foie gras was wonderful. The cod (the main dish) was delicious. The sausage was okay. I feel the risotto lacked some seasoning although it was perfectly cooked and the lemon salmon roe was a nice touch. I probably should have read more reviews because obviously people are praising the seafood curry, which I also thought of ordering. Tapabento Short version: Go! Just go. Don't miss it. Stumbled in when we took a wrong turn headed for A Casa Guedes the night we arrived in Porto. It's down a street hard against the train station mixed in with other restaurants that look like they are more for local residents. They squeezed us in without a reservation. Returned on our way out of town and slipped in again. No wonder why this place is always packed. The food is tremendous. Our first trip included the Tomato and Chèvre. A light balsamic drizzle accented the cheese and the berries and walnuts. So good we ordered it at both visits. No visit is complete without losing power at least once. We crushed each offering. Vegetable soup, potatoe frittata, mixed salad. The beef on toast was worth the trip alone. Toast, fine slices of top grain beef with soft cheese, arugula and a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Wrapped up our second visit with the sashimi tuna, excellent! For dessert we enjoyed the brownie on our return trip. So rich, so wonderful. The first assault included Peanut Foam, peanut not peanut butter. Very fresh tasting and light. The apple tartlet, very good. Best of all, everyone was warm and friendly. Go to Tapabento! read more

Go...you won't regret it! We arrived at 5pm on a Saturday without a reservation and although they were booked for later, they were happy to seat us. Within 20 minutes all the outside tables were full. We requested a wine suggestion and were given 2 tastings of local whites to choose from. Ordered 5 tapas, and they were served in courses, perfectly timed. Everything was visually amazing and tasted fresh, creative and all around delicious. Ended with peanut foam, which was fabulous. We didn't have a reservation so decided to go there early arriving at 6:45pm on a Thursday. There was already one group ahead of us. When it opened they organized 2 lines- those like us without reservation and people with a reservation. We got a table for 2 upstairs but they told us we had to complete our meal by 8:30pm. We ordered tuna ceviche, razorback clams, shrimp risotto and a jug of sangria. The ceviche is excellent - fresh as it must be and really flavorful served with sweet potato chips. The razorbacks are great- an unusual plate at least for us. Finally the risotto was great with 2 large shrimp. My only criticism is the service is slow. We barely finished by 8:30. But it's worth the wait. Cost was 67 Euro for 2 including bread and the wine. We're so impressed we made another reservation for 2 days from now to try other items on the menu. Don't be put off by the location which is a dodgy looking street behind the railway station. This is a gem. read more

No way to describe this place other than amazing! I made a reservation via email the week before, but stupidly didn't double check the time and we showed up 45 minutes late on a Friday night. They were so apologetic about the mix up even though it was my error, and really tried to figure out a way for us to stay. Luckily, another party didn't show up and we were able to stay. Our server was so sweet and informative. We wanted some Vinho Verde, but being unfamiliar with Portuguese wines didn't know the difference between the 4 on the menu. She brought out each bottle and let us all try each and pick the one we wanted! Such great hospitality. Eating here feels like your eating in someone's home. The food was even better than the service. We had the razorclams, goat cheese with roasted tomatoes, wild prawns, roast beef toast, potato pie, and the tuna takati. Everything was amazing, though the razorclams and the wild prawns were my two favorites. In my 8 day trip to Lisbon and Porto this was my favorite restaurant, and when I go back someday I will most certainly be visiting again! read more

It was hard at first to believe that a restaurant would have a straight 5/5 stars. So when we were looking at places to eat in Porto, we thought we must give it a try! Tapabento was tucked off one of the main streets. It was charming and comfortable inside. Everything we got was delicious from the white wine, bruschetta with freshly picked basil, savory oxtail empanadillas, zesty Garlic butter and lime shrimp! I just wish we got one of the delicious looking tarts that seemed popular, but we were eating close to their closing time! If we were staying longer in Porto, we would have surely made it back another day, the food was that incredible. It does deserve a 5/5. Tapabento is popular and for good reason. Not only was the food great, but it's one of the few places open on a Sunday, a lesson we learned quickly when we arrived in Porto on a Sunday morning to a ghost town. It was so busy when we arrived for our 8:00pm reservation that people without reservations were getting turned away and the host turned people away, struggling to provide alternative places that people could go for a bite. On second thought, maybe she just didn't want to name another restaurant. While the dishes are great for sharing, they weren't as "tappas" as I'm used to in terms of size. They weren't complete dishes in themselves, but they weren't that small either, so if you could be content eating just one thing, you might be able to survive off one or two dishes. To my friend's disappointment, they were out of razor clams and oysters by the evening. We had the following dishes: -- Mediterranean sausages plate with bellota ham, ceccina, pinhao bacon, and tomato toasts. -- Fresh mussels with curry sauce -- Sautéed organic Portobello mushrooms in garlic and thyme -- Foie-gras, backed sellery, drunk pear toast -- Some type of fried pepper -- Three drinks (two of which were wines) The sausage plate was good, although to be honest, I couldn't tell you the difference between that and any other charcuterie board I've had in Canada. The mussels were good (and fresh, according to my friend) despite me not even liking mussels. The curry sauce was on the watery side and not as strong as I'm used to curry sauces to being, but it worked with the mussels. The Portobello mushroom dish was extremely simple, but delicious nonetheless. I didn't have any of the foie-gras, but it earned compliments from the rest of our table. Despite it being a full house, they gave us a four-person table and when we asked if two of our friends who were also in Porto could join us, they were more than happy, telling us that the table was ours and we could do whatever we wanted. Service was quick (especially by Portuguese standards, which we learned throughout the rest of our trip was really relaxed) and the servers were warm and friendly. Averaging out to $30/person (CAD), I was satisfied with the quality and amount of food and drink we got. Is it in the city center? I'm terrible with directions. But it was only a 15 minute walk from our hotel, which itself was a 10 minute walk from the city center, so I'm going to say that Tapabento was conveniently located. It has two levels; we sat upstairs. In my brief walkthrough of the main floor, I think I prefer upstairs, which felt much more spacious and well lit with the balcony windows. Ambiance, food, price: it was all great by me and I'm glad at least this place was open on Sunday. read more

Made this reservation two months before our trip and when arrived they had us in the books. For a group of 6 we easily avoided a 45 minute wait. The hostess was so kind to al our requests: being hot, we requested to be accommodated upstairs in AC seating and she was so pleasant about it in a crowded restaurant. Tapas were good and bigger portions then we were use to in Seville. Taste was good and this were Portuguese tapas not Spanish. Drinks were inexpensive and refreshing. Service was also great. Holy mother of god this place was amazing. I mean, close your eyes and savor each bite kind of amazing. The salmon ceviche was seriously incredible - complex, fresh, flavorful, and an amazing combination of textures. It was my favorite dish in Portugal. The mushrooms were equally jaw droppingly good, just the right amount of garlic salt and herbs. The saffron shrimp risotto was also very good. The peanut foam was to die for with multiple textures and temperatures and pure smooth flavor. The space is also adorable and strikes a perfect balance of homey and modern. The staff were so so friendly and welcoming. The hostess felt like a long lost relative greeting us. This will be my first stop next time I'm in Porto no doubt. Centrally located adjacent to Sao Bento train station, it's a hidden gem. We immensely enjoyed the mushrooms and the clams, and then the wild fried rice and the fois gras. We especially loved how our waitress Joanna re-ordered the dishes because we were going to have the fois gras first, she was so right. My husband and I were elated to try this place after reading so many good reviews on Yelp, but I'm sorry to report we got TERRIBLE food poisoning after eating here! So unfortunate, because everything we had was just absolutely delicious going down (the fish soup, oysters, the daily selection of seafood which included mussels and razor clams, and the equator dessert), it just all came right back up a few hours later. :( The date we went was Tuesday, April 3rd 2018. Hopefully no one else got as sick as we did - recovering completely knocked out a full day of our trip. I have nothing else negative to say. We didn't wait long without a reservation, the staff was attentive, the food was great - but they need to take better care to ensure the freshness of their seafood when they serve it. read more
