We had high hopes for this restaurant after it was recommended by our hotel.  I think the place gets a lot of hotel-referred traffic as the side street located restaurant was full tourists.  The cramped quarters are fine and it will give you the NYC village feel. We liked the creativity of the menu and some of the chances they took with ingredients.  When service is slow and unsteady, it always impacts the experience and the way the food can be enjoyed.  Waiving down waiters for drinks is always a buzz kill before a buzz,  as is watching diners arrive later and get theirs first.   The tuna tartare was fresh and tasty when it did show up. I am not a big capers fan so i was pleasantly surprised when it had none.  The crunchy rice strings added some  texture and made the presentation at the table a photo shot (not shown here). I was slow before they mixed it table-side with a fresh quail egg.  I had high hopes for the shrimp dish.  The presentation was great but the tiny shrimp were overwhelmed by the crunchy, but oil soaked outside shell.  Maybe we drew a bad batch.  The sea bass was sad.  When a fish is served skin side up it needs to be crispy and ours was soggy and tasteless.  We love pasta so were hoping the tortelloni would save the dish. It did not but could have. One of them had unfolded and they were too al dente. A beautiful tapas restaurant with truly unique flavor combinations for some of the best fusion cuisine I've ever had! Every dish had a unique flavor element that excited my pallet. The only downside was that we were seated in the corner of the restaurant so there was no light on our table. I had to hold my phone's flashlight up to the food for the entire meal. What we ordered Salad with duck in hoisin sauce, sweet and salty forward salad, paired with thinly sliced apples, pine nuts, pomegranate, and peanuts. Familar flavors that taste like a Chinese chicken salad's cousin. Tagliatelle pasta in a light cream sauce with mushrooms and pine nuts. The folds of the tagliatelle perfectly soaked up the sauce. Nice al dente with some cheese and onion shavings on top. Duck breast in a djon mustard sweet gravy paired with an assortment of vegetables. I enjoyed the rich gravy with the duck. Salmon ceviche paired with mango mouse. A bright creamy flavor, fresh fish, colorful with crostini. Butterfish from the azores, grilled foie gra, topiko. Butterfish is light and clean with a sugar caramelized top, loved the crunch of the bonito, went with a shoyu based sauce. Very little foie gras. Grilled octopus slices with edamame, roasted sweet potatoes, and a poached egg. The octopus was perfectly cooked and lightly smoky, some chili oil in the edamame added a light kick. We did enjoyed the prawns in pastry and the crackers with yogurt dip that were part of the cover charge were good too. The scallops and butterfish both missed the mark. There was way too much going on! Great presentation with the scallops, but zero smoky flavor. The foie gras with the butterfish didn't seem necessary and I wouldn't have even known it was in there anyway but it was listed on the menu. Lychee panna cotta also meh. FOOD- wowsie, delicious. SERVICE: the server was professional and worked very hard. The issue I take is the service was extremely slow even by European standards. Management does not properly staff nor did they assist the team. A requested glass of water, a glass of the 20 year old port, and even the bill/check, arrived way too late to enjoy with the items it was meant to be coupled with. ATMOSPHERE: We sat in the secondary room (away from the main dining area) and you may as well sat at a bar. It was not cozy, nor comfortable, and felt like another space to shove people to get more people seated for more $$$. FOOD REVIEW- the best part. The meals are suggested to be shared. For 2 people, we were told 3-4 dishes would suffice. We were pleasantly surprised when the server brought us a complimentary hor' deuve hummus/chickpea ball. The food was fantastic. One of the best meals we have ever had! Everything was perfect and the flavors were amazing- they complimented each other so well. Our favorite was the braised butterfish. Wow- so soft and flavorful- it was the highlight of our meal. The octopus was more chewy then we like but it was still delicious with the sweet potatoes and edamame. A very nice restaurant with three seating areas all with different vibes. We chose the one on the right which seemed quieter. The bread appetizer was nice and the spreads were tasty. My martini was good, though the second was served half full. The Cosmo looked great and tasted even better. The staff was very accommodating of the nut allergy in our group. They made three changes to the dishes we ordered. The fish was a bit overcooked, the truffle tortellini was excellent, and the asparagus was cooked perfectly. I was a bit disappointed when the chef wouldn't allow an extra tortellini. The pasta was flavorful, with a strong mustard and vinegar taste. It was a lot of food and different from anything we've tried before. The beef tenderloin was cooked perfectly with a great selection of vegetables, especially the oven-roasted tomatoes. The lasagna didn't taste like a typical lasagna. It was richer and creamier, with the cheese being the only hint of traditional lasagna. I got explosive food poisoning and vomiting from this place!! I wanted so badly to like this restaurant. It came strongly recommended by someone who'd been here recently, mainly for the food. I was seated pretty promptly as the first one in the restaurant. Others were then seated, and I noticed pretty much every table but mine got an appetizer on the house. Mine finally came, but the delay itself should have signaled me to the service to come. I ordered a cocktail and sparkling water. My cocktail came, no sparkling water. I reminded the waitress. Meanwhile, the table next to me ordered 2 martinis with olives and were instead brought 2 martinis with lemon twists. The waitress came back, brought martinis with lemon twists...again. The customers reminded the waitress again that this was not what they asked for -- not sure if it was a language barrier? While she was at the table next door and about to leave, I reminded her again about the sparkling water. It eventually came. I ordered my food. On her recommendation, I got the salmon ceviche and sea bass. The salmon ceviche, when it came, had a strange look to it. The color of the salmon was not like fresh salmon I'm used to seeing. It was a bit bland/gray in color. I shrugged it off, thought maybe it's just cause of the sauce on it. Took a bite, and this should have been the warning sign. The salmon was rubbery, smelled a bit fishy, and the sauce was a little sour...I'm honestly not sure why I kept eating. I finished about a quarter of it. The waiter asked if it was okay as I hadn't finished it. Again, my fault I didn't say something but I didn't think anything of it at the time. The sea bass was alright. To be honest, I had better sea bass that morning at a local cafe. Nothing special. Fast forward 4-5 hours later....I start feeling nauseous. I have trouble sleeping through the night because of the nausea. I throw up for the first time in the middle of the night, into the hotel toilet. And the vomit that came up reeked of expired, old, raw fish. The salmon ceviche. It was likely poorly handled and old fish. The morning after when I woke up, I proceeded to vomit and retch at least 10 more times until there was nothing left to come up. I had to cancel my Duoro River cruise. I had to uber powerade, water, and medication to my hotel room. Now I'm 2 days out from my dinner reservation and still stuck in bed, 2 days wasted because I'm still feeling ill. Really disappointing for a restaurant so highly rated, to have had such mediocre service and ill-prepared food. read more

This was honestly a bit of a letdown. Reviews and menu led us to believe we were onto something good, but it was just okay. The place is super charming inside with seating on the ground floor and on a loft upstairs. Great decor and lighting, if there was music playing, I don't recall, but it is a great vibe. It was, however, extremely warm and ultimately uncomfortable as the meal progressed. The food all sounds wonderful but the issue with every dish is too many components. They just try too hard to impress with ingredients and it made dishes that could have been outstanding, either confused or a miss altogether. Case in point was butterfish with foie gras. The fish was delicious but the foie gras addition was a complete miss. Delete that and we both loved the fish. Another dish that sounded great but was a total miss was the octopus. This was easily the most beautifully plated dish we tried and the octopus was perfect, as were the seared sweet potato medallions (these could be a dessert they were so good). The issue was the poached egg, which looked great but just ruined the dish for the both of us. Eliminate that and the dish is perfect. We also tried the pappardelle which my wife thought was okay, I enjoyed but the veggies were too al dente still, not a bad dish. The final plate we tried was the cannelloni which was delicious. Very rich but great flavors. Service was just okay, as well. Not at all friendly or warm, and mostly efficient, but certainly not in the fine dining realm. Pacing was a problem and at one point she forgot to give us clean plates for a dish. She disappeared and I had to get plates from the shelves upstairs so we could eat the dish hot. Also, and this isn't a huge deal, but we were left to pour our own wine and water. I didn't mind except to do so, I had to get up and walk to it as it wasn't right by our table. Other diners had a small stand next to their tables and could simply pick up the bottles and pour. Server then asked for a tip when running our card. This was the only instance in Portugal where it was even mentioned and certainly not the type of place you'd expect to be asked. I doubt we will return, but it's a charming place with mostly good food. Pro tip: When we were seated, we were told they suggested 3-4 plates for 2 people. Stick with 3 or one less than suggested. The plates are all huge portions and we couldn't finish the last one. read more

Exquisite! This restaurant is on their way to a Michelin star if they aren't there already. Survey of one, but everything I tried was perfection. Cocktails- perfectly balanced and delicious! Oysters, big, briny and delicious! Butterfield- homemade ponzu, caramelized fois gras, topped with mounds of tobiko and sublime! Artichoke lasagna- creamy, lightly cheesy, I could taste every element and yet the melded together perfectly! I don't recall the name of the dessert, by that time I just said "whatever you recommend." The centerpiece is a sea urchin shaped mousse covered (sprayed!) Delicate white chocolate shell on a bed of pistachio and white chocolate sand accompanied by pistachio ice cream and pistachio cake. Oh, and raspberries with a drop of balsamic vinegar in each (who does that?!!) Every element is thought of - how it looks, how it hits the palate, the finish. I can't believe but am so grateful I happened on this place. Oh, and if the food wasn't enough, the staff were fun, friendly and informative. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and sat us nearly immediately! Once seated they delivered some falafel balls and helped us pick out some wine that paired with our dishes and advised us on how to order (for the table to share, one dish more than the number of people sitting together). Horrible experience We arrived several days before our tour with Global Tour company Concierge made reservation in front of us.. get to restaurant they lost it! Ready to send this away.. we waited they came up with a table We ordered we salmon ceviche. Tasted it didn't have enough pomegranates or onions and then we had a apple and pomegranate salad we didn't want the duck in our salad haven't had duck in 20 years what do we got shredded duck on the bottom of the salad tasteless shredded duck on top of it that duck we got caught accidentally eating who would think there's duck in a salad when you say don't put duck in it and it was over cooked! and the major influence on that salad of taste was the same lime pomegranate taste exactly like the ceviche total lack of creativity here! The icing on the cake for this nasty restaurant was we asked for the check we paid the bill the waitress wasn't around serving other customers we pay the bill and then she chases us at the entrance because she said wait you have the lamb coming it was shocking to the highest degree possible because she had an extended conversation with my wife saying the two dishes was probably probably enough wait to you have the two dishes and win going over a possible course for the main meal she there is no discussion over do you want it cooked rare or well done or medium she never asked! And it was her suggestion originally not to order more than this of each and the salad with duck which wife said leave the duck out we don't eat duck! Stay away from this place.... We're greeted enthusiastically by Kenny and Bruno who invited us in even before they were open and who found a way on a night when there were no reservations available till 10 pm.
