Good food. It was far from where we were staying but the food was good and the people working here are very nice. Little bit of a language barrier and really slow service for us. Good seafood and good steak

Food is amazing! Home cooking. Great location. You know you will eat well when the "mom" is cooking and the "dad" is serving :) only reason why I don't give this place 5 stars is because only "dad" was serving us and other tables therefore we had to wait a lot :( My dish (robalo grelhado) was perfect! Some would say a bit oily but that's the point of Portuguese cosine ;)

Located about 15-20m walk from the main old town area, this restaurant is a friendly place to enjoy home-cooked style meals. The owner is quite fun and when there aren't too many customers he is very attentive and playful. The food is fresh (try grilled seafood) and satisfying. The restaurant itself has a nice ambience and tables can be arranged to support large groups if requested in advance.

Really nice seafood restaurant with nice boss. The food were amazing. When we wanna order an extra soup, the boss stopped us for the BIG seafood rice coming. And indeed, we even can't finished the awesome seafood rice... Thanks a lot for the good service and delicious food Papavinhos provided.

I couldn't have asked for an experience that better captured the spirit and charm of the city of Porto than the one I had at Papavinhos. As I had failed to make reservations, I arrived to the restaurant promptly at noon--and was thankfully seated immediately. Within half an hour or so, the restaurant, which isn't large to begin with, was packed. So, learn from my mistakes, and book ahead of time, or don't, and be the most eager of beavers and arrive a slight bit before the doors are set to open. The restaurant itself was quaint, and the tablecloth, colorful. How is that at all relevant? It's not--it was just a detail I found particularly endearing. But let's get down to the nitty-gritty--the food. I ordered the grilled octopus in garlic oil (6Euros) appetizer and the grilled sea bass (10Euros) entree. And? Everything was delicious. The food was unpretentious, simple, and honest (at a ridiculously reasonable price!). The octopus was beautifully tender, and bathed in the most decadent pool of garlic oil. Needless to say, I made great use of the accompanying bread basket... As for the sea bass--the dish came with a small salad of red cabbage, lettuce, and carrots, as well as an excessive amount of garlic roasted potatoes. "Excessive", however, may be the wrong choice of word, because can you truly ever have too many garlic roasted potatoes? One hundred percent rhetorical question here, but if you're looking for an answer, the correct one is--no. In homage to the sea bass, the fish was not drowned in sauces or herbs and spices, but rather simply grilled. The simplicity of the dish worked beautifully as the sea bass itself was so fresh--it was as good as grilled fish could possibly get. If you're looking for some honest Portuguese cuisine, look no further. Great service. Great food. Served up in a warm and welcoming environment. If this little gem doesn't scream "Porto" to you, I'm not quite sure what will.

Our one and only night in Porto was spent here for dinner and we don't regret it at all. We got there rather late, just before they closed. They sat us up stairs and took our orders quickly. Our waiter was very pleasant and helpful. He let us taste a few ports and wines before we chose what we wanted. We had two starters, the prawns and the octopus. Both were deliciously seasoned, we stopped up the juices with the rolls. I always get starters and ruin my appetite for the entree. I got the cod for 1 person but there was enough for two. The cod was charred on the outside, flaky and moist on the inside. The potatoes were typical and the greens were not seasoned but tasted fresh. If you go you have to get a mousse for dessert. My husband had the cookies and cream, he tried to lick the inside of the jar like a cow! He kinda liked it. The staff arranged a cab for us when it was time to go. We will definitely be back the next time we are in Porto.

My bf and I really enjoyed our lunch here. An awesome vegetarian lunch, a delicious homemade soup (I had beet soup, he had mushroom soup- both amazing), and a cookies and cream dessert that was superb. Definitely recommend, definitely would come back.

Definitely recommend making a reservation, I found it impressive that the hostess's reservation system was essentially a notebook and pen in this digital age. We did not see much of our waiter, since the restaurant was extremely busy and filled up with diners. Standouts: 1. Razor clams - I'll always get these if I see it on the menu. Cooked in this incredible garlic sauce. 2. Fish and seafood cataplana - delicious, tomato-forward seafood stew; I liked the version that we had the night before more which came with rice and was more filling. But this was basically a never-ending bowl of fish, clams, mussels, and shrimp. Add to that the fact that the restaurant like most in Porto did not have A/C and I emerged feeling like I had been sitting in a sauna. Skipped dessert; I had my eye on the Weeel! froyo truck parked outside. One more nit - the metal chairs are not comfortable at all for sitting a long time in.

As I came in on my own I opted for the one open stool at the counter. The restaurant was busy on a Monday early evening, about 5:30-6:00 pm-ish, with what felt like mostly locals. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.

There were two other groups before us that were sat pretty quickly within 15 minutes or so. During the time we were waiting the hostess was extremely friendly and kept giving us updates on when the table was going to be ready and was making light conversation with us as we waited. When we finally got seated you could tell that the servers were definitely busy trying to get everyone's food and drinks out and so the same hostess came to us and said don't worry I'll take your order for you and told us the things that were the most popular which from my pictures we basically got everything she said LOL. And we were not disappointed with the food that we chose. Now we know why they are considered the house specialties. The flavors of the potato fish cheesy goodness dish I cannot remember the name of it was just so warm and comforting. I was worried about a fishiness coming through when you took different bites but no all the flavor is harmonized well with each other. The tuna salad that they made was extremely fresh and again was pleasantly surprised that though it was fish the spices and bread/butter combo that came with it really didn't give any fishiness. It was also well balanced. Now I will say though those other dishes were amazing our favorite hands down was definitely the grilled octopus. It was so tender and almost melt in your mouth. We were blown away by how well it was cooked. For sure I would say if you are in the area and have a good amount of time please check this spot out and give yourself at least 3 hours to enjoy the meal because again we sat there laughing eating and talking with the people around us because it was that fantastic of a Time for roughly 3 hours.

A lot of musical instruments and trinkets adorn the walls which made up for an interesting gaze fest as we waited for our food. Lunch rush was ongoing so we had to settle being sat at the bar. That's always a plus as we got to witness the buzzing crew efficiently feed the customers. We got 4 kinds of appetizers that our server recommended. They were all good but we liked the casserole baked dish the best. My wife and I shared a rice plate of the bifanas (spicy pork steak) with fries. For drinks, I got a bottled Compal juice while my wife got her afternoon macchiato. Our bill was a grand total of €17. I even corrected them as our bottle of water wasn't included in the chit. Bread course came warm, with a caramelized onion butter and some spicy bell pepper mayo that was ridiculously divine. This was my favorite course. Got the Cyber Punk tuna sashimi. Presentation was amazing. The tuna itself paired with the ponzu sauce was quite good. There were other elements like trout roe and crispy chicken skin, but the portions were sparse and I felt like the sauce drowned out their contribution a bit. Still a great dish though. Would order again. My main dish was the Vitela (braised veal). While the menu ostensibly presents these items for two to share, they can make half-portions of certain items, of which the Vitela was one. The meat was wonderfully tender. Flavor was had a slight tinge of bitterness and saltiness that didn't quite agree with me. Good dish overall. Service was kind and engaging. Possibly a bit too fussy over me for my American sensibilities, but they were very nice. The server knowledgeable about wine pairings and helped me pick out some for the courses I ordered. A couple of very minor issues here and there, like spilling some wine when pouring the glass, stuff like that. Also, the server shook my hand coming and going. Nice gesture but all I could think of was germs. Bathroom: Single-occupancy, upscale and nice. Toilet seat wouldn't stay up though. All in all, at decent restaurant but like I said, I had a bunch of small complaints that just added up, and it says a lot that my favorite course was the bread course. I would not repeat personally, but I think it might be worth a try for those that really love what's on the menu.
