    Seafood on ice

Great experience at Ostras & Coisas in the heart of Porto. We heard this was a place to be for seafood lovers and we sure did get our fill. As soon as you walk in your greeted by the days catch on ice. A mountain of fresh eats awaits. It was our first stop of the night so we loaded up on everything we could starting with the stuffed crab. It came with a sampling of shrimp, prawns, clams, oysters yoi name it. Next came the seafood linguini. I honestly can't remember all the ingredients but it was jam packed with protein from the sea. Of course we washed it all down with white wine. We ended up getting seated upstairs. The walls were adorned with painting and odes to the sea. Very nice atmosphere.

We were looking for a dinner spot with fresh seafood and Ostras y Cosas has pretty good reviews. It was a Wednesday at around 7:40 and we didn't have reservations, so the 6 of us sat around the bar. It wasn't too bad since we were able to sit 3 on one corner and 3 on the other, which made it easier to share plates. We ordered: -Portuguese Raw Oyster - these were great. They are €2.50/piece so it's slightly cheaper than NYC. However, if you order the 6 pieces, it's €13.50 so it's a pretty good deal -Crab Pate - I would skip this one. I think it was just imitation crab with lots of mayo. The toast it came with was probably better than the 'pate' -Scallops - I believe these were broiled, which was nice because it added flavor to it -Mussels "Provencal" - these were okay but I'm not a huge fan of mussels -Seabass - this tasted fresh and not fishy at all but look out for the tiny bones We also wanted to try the barnacles but they ran out for the day. I would say everything was okay. Nothing was bad but nothing was amazing that would make me come back or recommend it to someone.

We were lucky to walk in and get seated around lunch time. Such a cozy and beautiful interior. Prices were on the higher end but the oysters and prawns were so delicious! Would come back again for the prawns.

A country with 1,793km of coastline(according to the World Factbook) in the North Atlantic must have great seafood, right? You'd be right! Will you find it in Ostras & Coisas? We're not so sure. After a half hour wait, we were seated in a contemporary dining room with lots of natural light from the surrounding glass windows. After quickly deciding on the items, we were disappointed that the Tempura Squid and Small Fried Sardine Lemon were sold out. Fortunately, what greeted us was an ample amount of garlic bread and three types of spread that kept us held over until the oysters arrived. For a restaurant with Ostras(Oysters) in it's name, it was underwhelming. Not as sweet as we thought. The sauce for the Ameijoa "Bulhao" Pato was so good that we used it as a dip for the garlic bread. The Linguini do Mar was serviceable. Along with a glass of Graham's 10 years, the total was 75.50 euros. Note: there was a two euro cover charge per individual. Overall, we recommend Ostras & Coisas for any seafood lover visiting Porto, but maybe ask about what's available on the menu first.

Food was fresh. Our server was nice & spoke English. My husband enjoy the fresh fish. Nice experience.

This is an excellent fresh seafood restaurant managed by Joana who reigns supreme in this marvel carven of Alibaba for fresh oysters, mixed seafood King Crab Platter and much more. The place is on the pricey side for Porto but for good reasons. The Portuguese oysters were really fresh and very savory. Also enjoyed their grilled shrimps plate and dorado cooked to perfection. The King Crab Platter was absolutely divine with a an original Portuguese feeling based on bread and mayo. The service is really attentive, and very helpful in their wine recommendations and good suggestions. The Grifo Douro Reserva was very close to a French Sancerre wine but for one third of the price! A light fresh wine with a blended taste of apple, citrus and pear- Absolutely delightful! The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed you can sit at the bar and have a talk with the next table. I strongly recommend what many locals call a Seafood Paradise! Note my garlic grilled oysters were underwhelming and undercooked, spoke to the manager and she addressed this immediately! Send me four new ones that were cooked to perfection! So don't hesitate to speak up. Joana listens!

Made a reservation here for two and I'm so glad we did! It was such a good find by my friend. We passed it on the street and made reservations for the next day. The staff was really nice and the decor was light and airy with great natural lighting. The food was incredible and we got to try some new seafood we had never tried before. The seafood was fresh and delicious. I started with some kind of seafood bisque and my friend got oysters. We shared the platter of sorts with king crab, crab pate, barnacles, and prawns/shrimps. Definitely get the platter with king crab - it's a little more expensive but so worth it. I highly recommend this place to everyone!

Ordered The highlights: - scallop - the most impressive dish during dinner is an appetizer. Flavor is very balanced and flavor of scallop was not obscured by any of the sauces - tiger prawns Mozambique style - very flavorful but a tad salty The other dishes: - raw oysters: I've lived in boston and have eaten at a lot of oyster bars. I'm not impressed with the oysters here. They only provided lemon and no other sauces which I infer means the taste of the oyster itself should impress. Unfortunately that is not the case as they came out tasting super fishy and the lemon did nothing to hide the taste. The oysters didn't seem the freshest either and was a bit small. - grilled oysters with garlic butter: the oysters were small and came in piping hot. This dish tasted better because of the butter but the oyster taste was lacking - seafood rice: I would say it's a bit bland and no memorable taste. The mussels were a tad fishy and the rice was so so. They did have some razor clams though which was the highlight of the dish. - creme brulee: the cream was really good! The top sugar part was burnt but overall enjoyable!

It was recommended that I eat seafood while visiting Portugal since it borders the ocean. That's what drew me to Ostras & Coisas. Upon entering, the staff brought us to the display with all of the fresh seafood and explained what was available. We wanted to try things that we hadn't tried before. We ordered the tiger shrimp and the seafood with pasta. When we ordered the tiger shrimp, the waiter attempted to upsell us into purchasing the lobster. No thanks! The tiger shrimp came out first and it was huge! The shrimp was grilled perfectly. The shrimp meat was so juicy and tender and had the charred grill flavor. The shrimp even had tasty shrimp roe along the back. Delicious. As the waiter was about to serve the seafood with pasta, he realized that the wrong dish was ordered. He brought a seafood with rice dish, which we had tried at another restaurant the previous night. He tried to sell it to us, but we wanted to try something different. Unfortunately, it seemed like the kitchen was trying to rush out a new dish because the pasta was way undercooked. You can tell from the first bite that it was a dry pasta that was cooked a short amount of time as if it was fresh pasta. The seafood was good, though. It included pieces of lobster tail, clams, mussels, and shrimp. There were only 1-2 other occupied tables while we were there, so rushing the pasta seems unforgivable. The waiter also didn't do anything to rectify the situation. We ended up bringing the remainder home to reheat in the microwave. A few minutes with Chef Mike (microwave) resulted in perfectly cooked pasta.

    Tiger shrimp was very fresh.

Tried this restaurant from a friend's recommendation. After reading some of the yelp reviews, I decided to try the tiger shrimp and my husband got the seafood rice. Everything was so fresh. Tiger shrimp was giant and so delicious. While we had a great meal along with wine, I thought the prices were pretty pricey. It was definitely worth trying this restaurant but you can get more for the price at other places. Service was good, they showed you the fresh seafood. If you don't mind spending the money, it's a solid choice for dinner.

Around noon, someone did show up briefly to post a sign out front saying they were going to be opening at 12:45 that day (I asked out of curiosity; sounds like it's *often* 12:30, but it's really mostly a "they'll open when they want to" kind of place.) I knew it'd be the sort of place that would fill up immediately, so I got back at 12:30. At least that day, it turns out they still had 1 table left after they sat everyone there before they opened - that last table got claimed at 1, 15 minutes later. It's not a large space, and word is out for good reason. Given it's not a large space, it was also easy for them to have excellent service, which they did. You could tell they were all passionate about the place, and again, for good reason - it was great. Definitely one of the best meals we ate on that trip. Between the two of us, we tried: Complimentary bread and olive oil. One OMG fantastic, wonderful fish soup. The sort of soup you'd want to eat every day if you could. Croquettes that were pretty good. Enjoyable enough, perfectly crispy, a little too salty. Not nearly as memorable as everything else. The seafood rice stew for 2 - a description I always question ("for 2"), but true in this case. It was quite large - and great. Excellent shrimp, which I'm picky about. I'm even pickier about shellfish (clams, mussels, etc). I was expecting to give my wife most of them, but I did *not* do that. They really know how to get and cook the best seafood here. The rice at the top of the stew wasn't anything particular to mention - filling, though, and warming for the drizzly day it'd been that morning. The rice at the *bottom* of the stew, that'd been slowly cooking in hot stew the whole time, was *very good*. :D Wine-wise, they have like a hundred bottles of wine by the whole bottom, some very expensive, some *surprisingly* reasonably priced, but we also didn't need a whole bottle of wine with lunch - by the glass, they just had one red and one white house wine (also solidly priced, though, for a place like this, 6 euros (Be way more than that in the US. I had the red with the stew - solid.) Also a handful of solid-looking ports by the glass, one of which I had with dessert, a reserva tawny for 6.50 euros. After eating the stew, my wife tapped out. I was also pretty full, but I'd spent a lot of effort getting here and I was *gonna* have dessert, darn it. Had what was basically just a whole roasted stewed apple, cooked down until it turned to pudding. Super good. Went really well with a reserva tawny port. This place was great.

Luckily for us the restaurant was only half full so there was no need to wait (weekday at 3pm). Odd hours for popular restaurants worked out the best for us on this trip. Inside there were just 8 tables so I can see why this place usually sees long lines outside. It was quite cozy. Menu was straightforward with appetizers, seafood and from the country (aka meat). The octopus rice was so good. The strips of sliced octopus were very tender and the flavors of this dish were delicious. It was comforting on that cold and rainy afternoon. The salt crusted seabass selection was delivered the with flare all covered in flames. Our server ignored the flames and proceeded to crack open the salt crust, fillet and debone the fish. Full service! The fish was meaty and perfectly cooked. The side of potatoes and broccoli was addicting and I normally don't eat a lot of potatoes. We skipped dessert but the menu was tempting. Besides the fish service it would've been nice to have a bit more proactive attention from our server. When we requested our check, she pointed out that out that tipping was not included and waited until we completed the transaction. Would return for the food next time in Porto.

Definitely recommend making a reservation, I found it impressive that the hostess's reservation system was essentially a notebook and pen in this digital age. We did not see much of our waiter, since the restaurant was extremely busy and filled up with diners. Standouts: 1. Razor clams - I'll always get these if I see it on the menu. Cooked in this incredible garlic sauce. 2. Fish and seafood cataplana - delicious, tomato-forward seafood stew; I liked the version that we had the night before more which came with rice and was more filling. But this was basically a never-ending bowl of fish, clams, mussels, and shrimp. Add to that the fact that the restaurant like most in Porto did not have A/C and I emerged feeling like I had been sitting in a sauna. Skipped dessert; I had my eye on the Weeel! froyo truck parked outside. One more nit - the metal chairs are not comfortable at all for sitting a long time in.

Its patio has a direct view towards Porto's scenic Douro River. We came for lunch and were immediately seated on the 2nd floor of the restaurant beside a lobster & crab tank, overlooking the kitchen. The menu featured local seafood dishes including the Salt Crusted Seabass often set ablaze with fire. Our Garlic Shrimp (€10.50) came out hot and fragrant, conveniently de-shelled but with shrimp heads kept for the rich tomalley. We were quite familiar with this shrimp sauce profile, which made for a tasty dip with the sliced toasts. We followed this with piping hot Shellfish Rice (€25), a rich, hearty classic main course in a tomato base with loads of clams, mussels and shrimp. The portion in the stone pot was huge and filled a good 4-5 bowls. Initially we planned for dessert. But upon seeing a nearby family enjoy barnacles, we felt more adventurous and opted for this local delicacy too. At 200g for €12, we were served a large plate of boiled barnacles which were still briny and ocean-fresh from the Portuguese coast. Twisting off the leathery skin of gooseneck barnacle actually reveals meat similar to clam. It was fun and messy with seawater squirting in the process. The bustling restaurant felt relaxed, and by the time our first dish arrived there was a steady stream of local diners and expats beside us. The service was quite friendly although slightly overwhelmed by serving all of the nearby tables. Skip it or hit it? This was one of our memorable meals and definitely beat waiting an hour for its sister restaurant nearby.

They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.
