    Sardines

So glad we stumbled upon this restaurant. We came to town on public transportation bus for a sardine factory tour and wanted to grab some local lunch prior... opened Yelp and this popped up #1 and did not disappoint! Great food and service... grilled sardines & octopus, fish soup... everything exceeded expectations. Just go... great start to our day in town!

Creme Brulee finished on the charcoal grill

We came to Casa Serrao with my daughter based upon her recommendation from having eaten here previously. We had lunch on the sidewalk, inside a really cool enclosure (to keep the smoke from the grill from overtaking us). We all shared plates that included octopus, grilled sardines, grilled salmon and grilled salted cod. For our sides we had butter boiled potatoes, a large salad, and sauteed cabbage. For dessert, we had the Creme Brulee that was finished on the grill!! The food was terrific with the cod and sardines being the absolute best. The salmon steak was good, but slightly overcooked. The octopus salad was a delicious pairing. It is the first time I have ever seen Creme Brulee finished on a charcoal grill; it was a great show to watch and the taste and texture was fantastic. I must mention our server Daniel who was attentive and incredibly funny. He kept us laughing during a long lunch that we are certain cut into his personal time (between lunch and dinnertime). We highly recommend Casa Serrao!

Amazing selection of local seafood and great service. Great spot near the beach with seating inside or out.

Had a wonderful seafood lunch at this place! We saw this on our hop-on, hop-off bus yesterday and decided we wanted to come back today. We were not disappointed. The grilled octopus was one of the best i've had. The sea bass and sardines were wonderful. They give salad and some kind of fritters as starters (so think twice about getting any more). The fish dishes came with some sauteed veggies and smashed potatoes. So was really good for three people. House wine was wonderful too. Our waiter Daniel was great and really worked hard! I'm telling my friends to come here if they are ever in Porto (stop 12 on the purple line of the Yellow Bus hop-on, hop-off). I want to come back if we weren't leaving tomorrow.

This very fine restaurant was packed on a Wednesday night. Lots of locals and tourists coming to have great seafood at very reasonable prices. They have a charcoal grill right outside grilling up fresh seafood. My server's English was much better than my Portuguese! He was very helpful and tried very hard to get my teen daughter to order some food. I was grateful but she was kind of loaded up from eating some tasty street food earlier. I ordered the grilled octopus and a side fish of mixed rice (boiled rice with legumes.) the rice fish was a bit bland, the octopus was really tasty, especially the charred ends. The bolo de bolacha cake was super soft and delicious! Espresso coffee was good. And here lies my dilemma with my review. The server automatically set the table for 2. Brings over a bread basket, and 2 small plates of a octopus salad and a fish egg salad. My kid ate bread, ordered a soda and I basically ate the entire octopus salad, only tasting the fish egg (octopus?) salad. When the bill came, the server charged me the 2 appetizers which I assumed were complimentary as I'd been receiving throughout my trip here in Portugal & Spain. When I inquired about this, the waiter told me that he put it on the table and I ate it so I was to pay for it. I responded that I definitely ate the octopus salad (really good) but not the fish egg salad, so he removed the €5 charge. I felt he was trying to bring up the bill since my daughter didn't eat? Am I wrong here? Anyway, just a warning to anyone coming here, and this had no effect on my 4 star rating; but I did NOT leave a tip which I always do. I'd definitely return.

The sea bass (Branzino) was absolutely perfect. The waiter brought the fish to the table so that I could see how fresh it was (perfectly clear eyes). Then he took it out to the street to the grill to be cooked. When he served me he deboned the fish for me. Fish cakes were also tasty and everything was a great value. My husband had the cod which he enjoyed but I think he wished that he had ordered the sea bass. I only wish that I lived closer so that I could visit again soon!

Great service! You cannot get fresher than this! Grilling right in front of your eyes. The smell, the flavored, the sun! Best to have lunch outside.

Fantastic meal! We took the Metro out from Porto and it was well worth the easy commute- only several blocks by foot. Everything was delish- bread, clams in white wine sauce, verde caldo soup was smokey and flavorful, but the star of the meal was the skewered octopus-so tastey! The place was full and the staff was very friendly! I highly recommend this place instead of eating in the tourist restaurants of Porto anytime.

This was one of our favorite seafood places to eat at when visiting Portugal!!! The workers made us feel at home and helped us choose what items to order. Everything was phenomenal and we left so happy. We ordered sardines, cod, salmons, steak, ray, two desserts, two bottles of wine and paid 110 euros. It was insane how much food and alcohol we got for so cheap. The owner was so kind to us and we will highly recommend this restaurant to everyone visiting Porto or the surrounding areas. There was even Portuguese dancers and an accordion player!

The sardines are excellent. The salad is very tasty, the service is very good and the melao divine.

Delicious food. A bit on the pricy side for Porto...But average for Matosinhos. Fish is as fresh as it gets.

Eating with the locals in Portugal - northern edition (1 of 2)…read more It was later in the evening and I was laying my head down in Porto instead of Vila Nova de Gaia, which is atypical for me. I asked where to get some fairly priced and good grub that locals would definitely like. I was given this name - Capa Negra II - and, since they know they can be nasal and enunciate differently from the other Iberians, this young lady wrote it down for me. Capa Negra II was nearby and on the busy street that buses use to go from the Casa da Musica Metro over the Ponte Arrabida to the south shore. I had thus been by it numerous times. I took note that they offered many things, but are best known for their Francesinha. Even though Francesinha approximates "little Frenchie" in Portuguese, it is said to have been born in the Porto area. It is a sandwich inside which there are pressed layers of different pork and cured meats and it is covered in a complex sauce including cheese, tomato sauce, beer, port wine, spices, and then some. It is usually topped with an egg. They are very nice to look at, albeit almost decadent. I have a short history with the Francesinha. Years ago, I notice a place that looked like Capa Negra II and on that very same row of eateries that was hopping in the evenings and I went in there to get a Francesinha. (I don't know why that similar place is no longer open.) The sandwich was just like I have described above except that there were peppercorns in the meat that, in my opinion, were nasty and I had to open it up to work around them. It was thus the only time I had eaten a Francesinha. The waiter was mild mannered and I told him I only needed to verify one thing. I always try to put together some words in the local lingo because I want to ... and because I want to be far from being an "ugly American." I was adamant about there being no peppercorns in my Francesinha. I said something like, "Tem issas coisas pequenas negras e picante dentro a carne? ... nao quiero ... nao gosto." He quickly understood my issue and indicated there would not be any. Now, here, I was an idiot an asked for "batatas cocidas!" I should have just accepted the traditional fries that accompany the sandwich given how many times I've had Big Boy and Big Mac combos. I washed it all down with a soft drink. I was happy that I gave the Francesinha another chance. Mind you, you cannot do this often. It was robust, tasty, and, since you might eat only that, it will be filling without completely bogging you down. I liked the waiter and his politeness. The price was fair. The restaurant was modern, simple, comfortable, and airy, even though it was in the evening. Finally, there was a queue because it was full and you had to give the host your name. They stuck to it and got me seated quickly. I really appreciated the fairness and even handedness of all this and it's usually this way in Portugal, especially in its north. Their Francesinha is good and they have many other choices. It's not fine dining. I would almost describe Capa Negra II as a glassier modern tavern. There is another "branch" in the center and there may be more tourists at that one. I do like this newer part of the city, you will be eating with locals, and I recommend this restaurant.

I looked up LSD and we headed for it. Our immediate inclination was to sit outside and my friend approached a member of staff. He brusquely told my buddy that we would have to talk to the manager. Everyone was moving quickly and the outside was pretty full. The manager came over and said it would be at least a 45minute wait. After the curtness of the initial contact and the wait time, we paused. I asked about seating inside and the manager said he was short staffed asked if we were in a hurry. I said we didn't mind waiting if we could have drinks. He said for sure and sat us in the cool of the inside. We ordered a pitcher of sangria; he recommended the special which was light and refreshing. Delicious! The pictures show everything we ordered and there was not a single disappointment in the bunch. One note, the white fish and rose shrimp crude is a cold dish; very light, refreshing and full of flavor. As we were about to order dessert, we saw them serve the smoked salmon to another table and since more than one of us had been eyeing it, we ordered one. So glad we did. All the desserts were perfect. We also had a nice white wine and a pair of old fashioneds to round out the meal. The staff were moving throughout and it was the best dining experience we had in Porto! Highly recommended.
