First-- you MUST get a reservation. Don't try to come without. This restaurant. So good. I'm from Louisiana, we are very specific about our food especially seafood. I came alone and took the recommendations from my waitress. She was very confident and I like that. The fish soup was delicious. Light, but strong. Not fishy tasting, just succulent. It had other seafood in it. Then the Thai seafood curry. Delicious- beautiful presentation. So very well balanced. Then the dessert- peanut foam. My goodness----- OUTSTANDING. So, so good. Cold and soft ice cream on bottom, light whipped cream foam on top, completed with peanut abd chocolate crumbles. WOW that was the perfect ending to an amazing meal. We arrived Porto and couldn't wait to eat! This restaurant was highly rated on Yelp so we quickly made our way to the restaurant. There was a crowd outside and we got excited. The manager asked if we had a reservation (which we have learned you need to eat almost anywhere in Portugal), and we said no. She said she could put us on the waitlist but couldn't guarantee we would get a table. She set up seats outside for us and we ordered the sangria. It was delicious. Other folks were not as patient as us and we quickly moved up the waitlist and were seated in about 45 minutes. And it was well worth the wait. We had the couvert which was a sweet and salty combination of bacon Parsons and olives, followed by the ceviche with the catch of the day (salmon). Both were absolutely delicious and prepped us for Angus beef toast (which is served cold) and the king prawns. The staff were very helpful and accomadatimg ensuring we had a great experience. This is an absolutely amazing restaurant. Reservations are definitely required. Fortunately we arrived 5 minutes after opening time and they were able to accommodate us 1 hour later. The food is fresh and the flavor profiles are unreal. For my entree I had the seafood risotto.......delicious. The tomato and pesto bruschetta was so delectable. The best restaurant in Portugal. Thanks to Yelp we found this treasure. We tried to make a reservation and they were fully booked 7 days ahead. So we decided to take a chance and go there. Of course they were double booked for the day, but manager Isabel was so nice add accommodating. She gave us her phone number and advised to come back in an hour to see if she would be able to sit us at the bar. We were determined to get to this place and were not disappointed. The service and working people were super nice even if they did not speak English. They have menu in different languages including French, English, Russian. The taste of everything was so delicious and fresh, we wanted to lick the plate. Every plate is a piece of art, nicely decorated. We had fish soup, foie gras toast, ahi tuna, and some thing else snd everything was delicious. If you plan to visit Porto, make a reservation ahead of time. read more

There's simply no way to describe our experience at Tapabento - from beginning to end, and every moment in between, it was perfection. Best food we had on our Portugal trip! First off, definitely make a reservation (email them, can find the email address on their website) because there was a line just for people with reservations at the time the restaurant opened. I saw them turn people away because it was Saturday night of a holiday weekend so I assume they were fully booked. Lots and lots of people from out of town dining here so we weren't sure how we would feel but we are so glad we took the time to eat here. Our reservation was at 7pm but they had mistakenly put us in the book at 8:30pm- we were starving and luckily I had proof of the reservation so they quickly accommodated us. Great service! We had the potato quiche, foie gras toastie, three cheese board and the fish soup as our starters- the fish soup was good and not too heavy, no cream which was good. The potato quiche was to die for as was the toastie with poached pear and fruit. I've never had flavor convos like that before it was incredible. For our main one of our friends had the veggie curry, which was unfortunately under seasoned (lacking in salt) with zero spice, and he was disappointed. My other friend and I split the risotto which was amazing, just the right amount of creaminess, with chunks of fresh seafood. We unfortunately didn't have room for dessert but we experienced significant food envy watching them pass by. A few things we thought were odd- the temperature inside was BOILING. Granted it was chilly outside but we were sweating even after de-layering indoors, and that was slightly unpleasant while eating. Also our waitress was concerned we were ordering too much food so we took off the bruschetta from our starters, I've never been told NOT to order food before? I wasn't really offended by that just confused because we clearly were ready to put it away. Overall a great experience but please regulate the thermostat a bit! read more

After an amazing meal on our first night in Porto, we had to return for our second and last night because in our minds no other restaurant could come close to Tapabento! This was our favorite meal of our vacation! We did not have a reservation (would recommend you have one- can book via TripAdvisor) but the owner worked us in with a little puppy dog eyes. Having lunch at Tapabento is not just having the food itself, but having an experience of Portuguese delicate food and the caring service as a family. It gives us the feeling that this is a family business. The staffs are all super friendly and caring starting from the second we arrived. We came for dinner originally, but were very kindly and sadly informed that all tables are already booked, as we did see people lining up before it opened to enter the restaurant, and people waiting outside hoping people who reserved tables won't show up. This sign confirmed our resolution to try it no matter what. So we made a reservation for lunch the next day. Then the next day came. We ordered mixed seafood (dish 1) and razor clam (dish 2), and wanted to also order a glass of white wine. The staff kindly told us that mixed seafood has razor clam in it, so we don't have to order it again to try it. Then for the wine, we are not really wine drinkers, so we asked for recommendation. The staff explained the differences of their wines in details and recommended one. Later on, when she came to serve the wine, instead of just bringing over a glass of the wine we ordered, she brought a bottle, asked us to try it first and see if we like it, if not, we can change. Then she poured a bit into the glass. After we tried and confirmed that we like it, she officially served the wine. This is so caring and we really appreciated it! Regarding the food, we ordered foie gras toast, mixed seafood, and sautéed mushroom. Foie gras toast is a piece of art! The course was served in a beautiful pattern and colorful sauces at the bottom, then the toast, then foie gras, and then a caramelized pear on the very top. There are also raspberries, blueberries, and hazelnuts around the plate as decorations. The taste is wonderful! It is a perfect combination of sweet and salty! The mixed seafood and sautéed mushroom are also perfectly cooked. The seafood is very fresh. After finishing all dishes, we added an order of foie gras toast, just cannot wait till next time to have it again. The dessert is also very tasty, not too sweet, but your tongue can figure out every ingredient yet all the ingredients blend well together. We would say the whole lunch experience is impeccable, like having a favorite meal back in home. Where do I begin??! The best restaurant my family and I visited in all of Portugal. Everything, from drinks to dessert, was fantastic. We were dipping bread (our fourth basket!) in the leftover sauce. Particularly noteworthy plates were the shrimp, mussels, peanut foam, and raspberry tart. The best part of this fantastic meal though? The people. The servers were warm and welcoming; a nearby table accidentally spilled wine on my sister's shirt and one server gave her a free tee-shirt and offered to scrub out the wine while we dined. Highly Suggest! We snagged a reservation a week and a half ago and are certain this is our favorite restaurant in Porto. During our stay, we tried many, but this was by far the best. The service was perfect, we were accepted as soon as they opened (Which is when we had our reservation), and we had a bottle of wine shortly after (which ended up being our favorite of our trip overall). Had this restaurant recommended from a local, and what a nice place. Just located next to the São Bento Railway Station not far from the busy tourist area - this restaurant is a pearl. Having tried quite a few restaurants in Porto, this one seems very authentic. We were placed at 1st floor - decorated in a somewhat hipster style - but very tasteful and almost like you were home by the owner. We ordered 2-3 dishes each to share - and could empty our plates. The sizes for the portions are hughes - so for a reasonable price you'll be filled with tasty and colourful food. The staff is ever so kind and speak English fluently. My partner Mason and I had the most amazing meal we have ever had at this gem of a restaurant.
