Perfect place for lamp & lighting repairs! I have a pair of beautiful Robert Abbey crystal lamps - and sadly the switch snapped on one of them during a house move. I found TL via Yelp - easy to get to and has its own off street parking making things simple. Dropped off the lamp on a weekend and it was ready a few days later. The price was excellent and the repair job PERFECT. Just like new, brand new switch and socket which perfectly matches the other lamp. Add friendly and fast service to the mix and this place really is perfect! UPDATE: This place is seriously the best. They got my chandelier rewired crazy fast, and it looks awesome. Plus, when I went to pick it up they remembered that I was looking for Edison bulbs for it and suggested some Smoked Edison bulbs that work perfectly with the fixture. I'll definitely be going back for future light fixture needs and recommending this place to my friends and family! I haven't actually gotten my product from them yet but right now they deserve 5 stars for customer service. I came in looking for wire for a very old chandelier rewiring project after the big hardware stores failed me. I brought the chandelier with me so I could show the store exactly what I meant when I said I needed "very thin wire." Rather than make me haul the chandelier, my twin babies, the diaper bag and stroller into the store, an employee met me outside, told me they could rewire it for me, went over everything, and left me feeling like I had made a great choice by coming here. I've known about Tap Lighting for years (how can you miss the really cool yellow house on 6th Ave), but just recently had the need to go by. I ordered some wall sconces for my condo and when they arrived, they were rusted and bent. The manufacturer told me to toss them and that I had to wait 3+ months for new ones since they were on backorder. I figured I'd take them to Tap Lighting and see if they could work their magic on them to restore them (and save me $$$$ on rebuying the new ones when they came in). The staff there were very nice and efficient with the drop off, but did tell me they would take about 3 weeks to fix (since they were so busy). It was not a problem and I was very thankful for them being upfront about that--most businesses these days aren't. Fast forward 2 weeks later and I was in touch with Cort regarding the specifics on exactly what I wanted done to the restoration and a day later I get the call that they were ready to be picked up. They are the absolute best! I ordered a ceiling lamp online from an international site that provided broken goods, as well as confusing wires for installation. So, I found this place, took a look for myself, and what seemed to be a huge problem in my eyes was merely a piece of cake for the employees there. They managed to fix the lamp within 10 minutes, provided guidelines as to how to install the light, and charged a cheap fee. I will for sure go back to them without a doubt. Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but I couldn't disagree with "Kassy" more. I think a place like Lamps Plus would be better for her because Tap Lighting is obviously for a discriminating eye. Their inventory ranges from new stuff to old, refurbished vintage lighting, all of which is terrific. Tammy, Cort, Arturo, Vickie... everyone is SO helpful and goes out of their way to get you what you need. I had some special needs for an 80-yr-old house. Cort helped me with retrofitting some sconces, and then I eyed a floor lamp... he let me take it for a few days to see if it worked in the space and didn't ask for any collateral or anything. Walked into the shop about 10 minutes before closing with a lamp with an electrical problem. I was told they "no longer do repairs, but we might be able to help." While I waited for someone to take a look at my lamp, I couldn't help but notice their unique and beautiful inventory. I was even given a bottle of water during the short wait time. A guy walked out, apologized for keeping me waiting, then took about three minutes to fix the electrical problem with the lamp. When I asked "how much do I owe?" he said "$5." WOW! AVOID: if you need something they have, great. If it requires expertise or effort, go someplace else. In August we broke the lens to a custom canister light and when to Tap to help find something to replace it after discovering none of the local home improvement stores carried anything similar . The folks at Tap were very friendly and assured me that it wouldn't be any trouble at all. After waiting a good amount of time, in October I finally called... and called, and called... once weekly for three weeks. After three or four weeks Tiffany? (can't remember her name) finally returned my call and assured me that she would have a replacement or recommendation and that she was sure to find something at a trade show in November or December - I'd have an answer or recommendation sometime after then. Well, I finally just hired a contractor and replaced the lights. It's now the end of January... I called this past Monday just to see what was up, of course the call wasn't returned. PROS: many many custom / vintage / antique lighting solutions I don't think you're going to find anywhere else. CONS: Friendly but incompetent. read more

Everyone here was so genuine. I really appreciated their kindness. I brought in a lamp for repair and they assisted me immediately. They told me they were pretty busy and that it would take about 2 weeks. I browsed at their lamps while there and they have an incredibly unique variety of lighting. I also grabbed a Lindt chocolate out the courtesy dish on my way out (WAY better than complimentary mints). I received a call the next day and was told that it was just a loose wire and that my lamp was ready for pick-up at no charge. I was thrilled! Even if they just tightened a screw or fiddled with a wire, they fixed it all the same. The fact that they didn't charge me (when they easily could've and I wouldn't have known the difference) was honest and kind. I picked up my lamp the next day and it has been working perfectly since. Although mostly geared towards the lighting & home decorating industry, Tap Lighting delivers outstanding customer service. This is particularly because of Jeff, a twenty-something employee rife with tattoos and plugs for earrings. He was just as quirky looking as the converted house that the store resided in. And while everybody else was busy talking to professionals, he went out of his way to approach a random customer like me. He took a look at the weird light bulb I bought years ago from Lamps Plus, and promised to find me an exact replacement. Before going to Tap Lighting, I had already scoured Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, and Lowes.com looking for a replacement but was scared to purchase a glass item only to find that it doesn't fit. I also didn't want to spend hours driving and looking around hordes of lighting aisles to find the size and length I needed. Jeff promised he would order one for me and would piggy back it with the wholesale orders that come through so that he could transfer the discount. It took a few days, but I was glad to have not just the exact light bulb I was looking for my peculiar lamp, but he was also able to recommend a "warmer" tone for my eyes when I read & study on long hours. Needless to say, I was indebted to him and was more than glad when I found that they were having their semi-annual lamp sale. I own two Tizio lamps by Artemide that are over 20 years old. They were both malfunctioning. They would only work intermittently. The repair was perfect and the price was very inexpensive. Came here asking for a lamp replacement part and everyone was very helpful and friendly. In the end they didn't have the exact model I was looking for but the owner was able to dig up a similar piece that should work. Since it was a used part from another lamp he gave it to me at no cost! Also got his email in case it didn't work I could let him know and try to bring it in. I had been to Home Depot and Lowe's and had not been successful in finding the right part but luckily this worked. Amazing selection of antique and new lamps, lighting fixtures, sometimes Ebay offers some beautiful options for bygone eras. But if you don't have the patience to search and you can pay higher prices for say Art Deco, this is by far the best selection I've seen in the city. She can re-felt the bottom of a lamp, get your specialty bulbs and pretty much service any kind of lighting needs. I highly recommend looking around in here the next time you want antique to modern light fixtures or lamps. read more

When I moved into an apartment steps from Tap Lighting, I thought it was a bit of an eyesore. But I soon found myself in possession of some old lamps that needed rewiring, so I checked it out. I had a good experience, and getting the lamps rewired took less time, effort and money than I anticipated. Most days, you'll find a guy named Jeff manning the place. He's a lot of fun, helpful, and knowledgeable about lighting. When I brought in an iffy vintage lamp, he immediately took it apart, diagnosed what was wrong with it, and told me what I'd have to do to get it working again. The owner (a blonde woman whose name is Tammy, I think) is a different story. She didn't seem happy to see me. She may be passionate about lighting, but she's obviously not a people person (as much as I hate that phrase). Avoid her if you can, and deal with Jeff instead. The disclaimer here is that I don't utilize Tap Lighting's more labor-intensive services. I didn't have them design lighting for my house or a restaurant or anything. Still, I'm happy to have them close by. Their selection of table lamps, sconces, overhead lighting, etc. is fantastic, and I won't hesitate to continue going there for light bulbs, lamps or rewiring services. read more

A month or so ago, my husband and I had an excellent purchasing experience at Tap Lighting that I'd been meaning to review, but today confirms that this is the place to go for any lighting needs. We first went to Tap Lighting because we wanted to replace our entryway light and dining room chandelier. Our options were limited by sloped ceilings and a clear idea of the type of lighting we didn't want for those locations. We started off at Lamps Plus. Lamps Plus usually has a decent selection, but I can't stand dealing with the overzealous staff. This time, they didn't even have anything that would work for the entryway and the chandeliers were fine, but nothing unique. Tap Lighting was perfect. There are so many lamps in every style, plus some great antiques. It's kind of a maze (I think that's the nature of lighting stores), but browsing is fun and Tammy knows how to lead you to what you might want. She wasn't pushy at all and we ended up buying things we loved that we didn't feel we could buy just anywhere. She was also great about working with our budget. We had an issue with the chandelier, but they fixed it quickly and it's back in place and looks great. Our latest challenge has been to find a small, attractive accent lamp that gives off a decent amount of light. Turns out, it's really hard to find a decent lamp under 12 inches. We tried lamps from Target and Ikea, but we weren't satisfied with any of them. They either looked too cheap, too basic, or too much like an alien's nightlight (that was the Ikea one). We also scoured the Internet, including Etsy. Some things might have worked, but it was hard to tell whether they would give enough light for the space. We finally did what we should have done in the first place and went back to Tap Lighting. Within five minutes of walking in the door, we were directed to the perfect light by Abby (plus, I saw at least three other lights that also would have worked). Everyone at Tap Lighting is friendly and knowledgable, so whether you deal with the owner, Tammy, or someone else, you should be able to get great advice without pressure to buy one of their fabulous lights. read more

I wanted to write about finding the perfect lamp for my victorian home, I have shopped there over the last 6 years each time I find the most unique lighting.. This lamp was just what I wanted , very ornate and stylish for the 1890s .. I like going there because there is always something new to discover. The people at TAP were incredibly knowledgeable; they explained how a repair could be postponed for a while if we switched to a different bulb. About 5 years ago I went to Tap Lighting and met Tammy. I was looking for outdoor lighting for 2 different places and a bathroom light. Tammy came over to my house and helped me with picking the right ones. I have been happy with them ever since. Now I am looking for a chandiler so I went back in. Amazing place to shop when looking for new lighting! My wife & I are remodeling our house & buying all new lighting. After trying places like Home Depot/Lamps Plus, etc., we stumbled across this place & loved the selection & customer service. Tammy is the owner & goes above & beyond to show you what she thinks you'll like based on what you've showed her you like. I love shopping at local owner run stores whenever possible, but some places make it not really worth it when not taking an interest in their own business or charging way too much, but you can see Tammy truly cares about the customer & loves what she does. The actual store is beautiful too... an old converted house with lots of charm! Aside from the how good the selection is, their prices are very reasonable as well, & depending on what you're buying, they may even cut you a deal on a piece or two. Worked a swap (plus a few dollars) on an antique fixture that I had, but the wife didn't, we selected a very neat Spanish Revival light fixture - the entire staff, Tammy, Curt, etc. were all GREAT - very nice, helpful & friendly!!! Jeff and Tammy were helpful but not intrusive as we looked at the desk lamps in every nook and cranny of this fantastic shop. I got such a terrific deal on an antique brass lamp with a Tiffany shade that I bought another lamp for home. My husband and I had a few moments between meeting clients. We caught sight of Tap Lighting and remembered we needed a light fixture for the reading area. We strolled in for the first time. It was a museum of lights!!! We were greeted by a friendly, smiling face. Arturo was very attentive to us. He presented several lamps similar to what I had in mind, but no bite. However, hidden amongst the array of Victorian and Art Deco ceiling lights clustered above our heads, Arturo did find one piece. He pointed out to a simple and inconspicuous mid century lamp with three globes each crowned with avocado green and pastel yellow mounts. In an instant it called to me! On one of my visits, this guy had a very unique vintage lamp with colorful tiles and Tap Lighting actually had a matching base! In my case, I brought in a George Nelson bubble/saucer lamp and needed to splice a longer wire. Cort discussed various options and recommended the one that wasn't the easiest but was the best, because he likes to do things the right way. During the process, we ran into some problems and he was great with communicating to me and responding to my questions, and figuring out an alternative solution. He charged me a very fair price. I actually wanted to pay him more. He ordered an extra part so we're still in the process of making it look as good as possible. In summary, I've found that they go out of their way to help their customers with the best solutions possible to their lighting needs. If they don't have something, they can order it. I ordered a George Kovacs P305-2 LED floorstanding lamp. The order was a custom order and had to be shipped so it took a little while longer but I couldn't be happier. They made a very nice deal with me on the lamp and I ended up purchasing it for less than any of the online prices. Usually you walk into these lighting stores and end up paying more, but this is not the case. The products they sell are fabulous, although pricier because they work and are built well.
