A party of three; had never tried Tania's. But had always heard great notions of this quaint restaurant. A very open floor plan with lots of natural light coming in from the front windows. Our waitress was lovely, didn't catch her name, But very attentive even with a completely packed establishment. We arrived just at 11:30 when the lunch menu starts, but a huge personal bias, as well as a benefit of Tania's; is they do breakfast all day! I had ordered the Big Breakfast Special, Two eggs - your choice on how they're prepared. Two slices of toast, with hash browns and choice of sausage, ham or bacon. A more than filling plate, leaving me completely full by the end of it. (See photo for my meal!) Decent portion size for the breakfast, at an even better price! (12$~ approx.) Food was OK at best service was terrible. Wasn't very many people in there. Lots of waitresses they pretty much ignored us. The whole time didn't refill. My coffee had to just walk up the front to get the bill won't be back. read more

Went for the first time today and was very impressed with my breakfast. I had a 2 egg meat lovers omelet. I have never seen so much filling in an omelet in my life. It had about 4 sausages, 3-4 full size bacon, and half a cup of ham at least. Tons of cheese as well. I could not finish my hash browns which were also pretty good with some crispy bits. My husbands Bennie was good but could have used a little more lemon in the hollandaise and eggs were soft rather than medium. Our server was lovely and the food came out quickly. 1st things first. It's 9:30 Saturday morning, and the place is jammed. It's also incredibly noisy, as the acoustics are hard. So I turned my hearing aids down. Wall hangings or acoustic tile would help. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. I ordered the large breakfast, and asked waitress to hold the toast...so she offered a 3rd egg as a substitute. That was unexpected and appreciated. Tne coffee was weak, completely devoid of flavor. As a coffee junkee, I tried 2 sips and gave the rest a pass. Breakfast arrived in 17 minutes. Not bad for a packed service. The sausage skins were a tad dry, but perfect inside. I'd guess they cook big batches and keep them on a steam table. Works for me. Eggs were delivered as ordered, hash browns good, but they tasted a bit like rancid cooking oil.. Enter Catsup, which failed to hide the rancid tinge. Too bad, because I was looking forward to enjoying the potatoes. Oh, well. No stars for the "coffee," two for the spuds & five for the eggs & sausage...and the wait staff. I mentioned the bad oil to my waitress, and asked her to let the kitchen know. I have mixed feelings about this place, to be honest, but I won't be back. read more

Came here on the way to Port Alberni from Gabriola after my friend had done some research and found that this restaurant had a reputation as a local gem. A bit rough around the edges, I'd say, with problems that are so easy to fix that if they don't, it's pretty willful. Perhaps it's not fair of me to judge, because I'm from New York City and my standards are shaped by that, since brunch is a bit of an institution there; howvever, the eggs benedict were pretty weak, even though the waitress recommended them highly and said they were "made to order" (as opposed one ones that are made en masse?). Hollandaise sauce has three basic ingredients, egg yolk, butter and lemon as an emulsifier. This tasted like a cheese sauce and the eggs were smothered in it. I could not taste lemon at all, and it had a lumpy texture. It didn't taste like hollandaise. The chef needs to either learn how to make hollandaise (Google, Youtube) or call this something else because it is not eggs benedict. The pancakes, on the other hand, were a different story. They are massive and pretty tasty. Main complaint, fake maple syrup in a country known for maple syrup (check their flag if you don't believe me). No real excuse for this. Last criticism, OJ that came in a bottle. Really? A place known for breakfast that doesn't have OJ that gets poured (I could accept some Tropicana, but fresh OJ would be worth whatever extra it would cost, at least to me). The difference between a two star review and a four or five star review: 1) Learn to make hollandaise sauce. 2) Get some real maple syrup. 3) Pour some OJ. If you were to fix the other two and have fresh OJ this place would almost be off the charts for breakfast. It's really the little things that count. read more

When a coffee shop can serve all day breakfast in a small strip mall in Nanaimo and stay alive for 15 years, they must be doing something right. That's the story of Tania's 'breakfast all day' place. Good food, good prices, great service and what the heck else is there? When you want poached eggs and not too soft ... that's what you get. Refills? No problem, no charge. Bacon done your way, good bread for the toast and help yourself to the syrup bottle if you order the pancake option. Comfortable, affordable and friendly. Waitresses are awesome here. They are always run off their feet but will make your stay there a pleasant experience. The hash browns are homemade and delicious! I was very disappointed based on the reviews here. The first time I went on a Sunday and was told "we're closed" when I walked in the door (with the open sign still on). It was 1:45, apparently they close at 2pm. I decided to give them another try on another day, but now that I've been, I wish I hadn't. First, I will say that the front at least looks clean and neat. And the service was fast, although they don't seem to cater to newcomers well - I had to go up to the till to find out that you don't get a bill, you "tell them what you had" and they ring it in. Okay... wish I'd known that instead of sitting at my table for 20 minutes after telling my waitress I didn't want anything more. Okay sorry, that's about it for good. I found the menu very limited. It's one page of breakfasts and, for instance, their egg selection is two eggs and two pieces of meat and one slice of toast (!) or two eggs 4-5 slices of meat (!) and two slices of toast. There didn't seem to be anything comining "a little of everything" which is what I like, and as for special orders I heard a guy at the next table ask if there were small pancakes (for the 3 or 4 year old kid he had with him) and the waitress said "no they're really big" without offering to see if that could be changed. I mean you'd think that, of all items, would be a damn simple item to remedy in order to make a happy kid and a happy parent. As for the food... "greasy spoon" in my vernacular means that its unhealthy food, but good flavor. Unfortunately I found that the food was as flavorless as it was full of grease. The hashbrowns were soggy with it and tasted of nothing but wet potato. My scrambled eggs weren't scrambled - I got an egg omelet, and egg that had been left on the grill too long (browned), at that. The sausages were also lacking in flavor and also very greasy. I didn't actually finish the meal, but I ate at around 9 and I can still feel it sitting very heavy on my stomach. I won't bother going back again. For those looking for alternatives for a breakfast spot, I still need to write a review of it, but I suggest Alice's and would compare them in short as follows: the service not quite as good, the prices comparable, menu and seating much bigger, better view, much better food. read more

Came to Tania's with my son Sept 13th, 2014. It was a busy Saturday morning. Stood aimlessly at the door for a few minutes while more people came in behind us. Not only did no one say hello, no one even made eye contact. Even though I was constantly looking at all of them in the eye to try and garnish some attention. It was as though we were invisible. One waitress even walked up and said hello to the people that came after us. We eventually found a table. Some kind patrons let us sit with them as the rest of their party didn't arrive. There we sat for the next 15-20min and still not even eye contact or hello from the staff. This is hands down one of the worst restaurants for customer service. My son and I eventually walked out and went to Ricky's where we were immediately greeted. I will be sure to never come to Tania's again and will mention to family and friends about this experience. read more

Four stars? What a joke! I went here based on the 4 star Yelp review and was extremely disappointed! The only thing this place has going for it is the service is OK "sweetie" that's what everyone is referred to as. The mediocre food and terrible coffee comes quickly. Do your self a favor and don't go! $20 (including tip) for eggs Benny & a coffee (that I never even drank). Felt obligated to leave a tip but left feeling that I'm never going back! read more

Came here to grab a quick breakfast before work.. had to wait a little bit for someone to come, but the food came quick once I ordered.. the coffee was surprisingly good too (just normal coffee. . Not esspreso) I ordered the mini breakfast and got two slices if nicely buttered toast, half a plate of crumbled hash brown ( not like the single piece u get in McD) it's a bit greasy, but still crunchy . 2 eggs over easy that's done perfectly (yolk still in liquid form) and 3 large breakfast sausages .. this place met the expectation indeed . Tania's is a great little spot that cooks up a mean breakfast, but I was less than impressed with their exorbitant pricing for simple bacon and eggs. Tania's was once a favorite, but they seem to have lost sight of the main attraction - a good breakfast at a reasonable cost. Busy little place . Food was excellent! Service was friendly although the refills on coffee and condiments brought to the table were a little scarce. My sense is that this is not normal and may just be a blip. There was only 2 free tables when we arrived and we still got our breakfast in a reasonable space of time-for our first time it sure will not be the last. read more

Visited Tania's for breakfast. The pancakes over flowed the plate. Environment is that of a basic diner - eat and run. Price and food were great other than the hash browns which came with each plate except for the pancakes. All in our party of 5 found them mushy and did not partake. Change your hash browns and we will be back! read more

North and central Nanaimo have little to offer in the breakfast department. The service was fine, but it was the saddest eggs benny I've had. The hollandaise seemed off and also I think they used salted butter, I could forgive that if my plate wasn't so drenched in it that I couldn't even see the food. The english muffin was barely if at all toasted and so sogged out with this nasty, salty mess that it wasn't edible. I was in a hurry and they were busy so i didn't bother to complain but I barely touched it. The prices here seem quite good, but skip the benny, it's sad. read more

Love Tania's! The eggs benny is awesome. Get there early as it has been known to sell out it's so good. Another of my favorites are the big juicy burgers and homemade fries and gravy. My experience was terrible. Tania herself was fine but the employees were horrible! My son spilled his drink and the two kids just flirted at the counter and offered no help! And my table was right beside the counter! I had to go in the back and get my own towels move the table myself clean everything. When I asked for a garbage can they pointed to the back. By the time I finished cleaning I couldnt even eat because my son had to be at karate. I still had to pay full price for a meal I couldnt touch even for the spilt drink! I thought I found a place to eat every friday before karate but I wont ever be back!!! Waste of money read more
