Here Today, Gone TAMALE! Lol. Well, these tamales will be gone very soon! In the "Lobster Village" of Puerto Nuevo, Tamales Liz is a relatively inexpensive option serving some delicious tamales! They are "100% Elote" (corn cob) tamales and they are soft and delicious! The fragrant smell of cooking tamales is present in the air as they are being cooked in pots right at the open entrance facing the street. Tamales are only 25 to 30 pesos each or around $1 to $1.50 dollars depending on currency rates! Choose from pollo en salsa verde (green sauced chicken), tamales de camarón (shrimp), tamales de nuez (nuts), tamales de res (beef), rajas con queso (cheese), tamales de piña (pineapple), and tamales de fresa (strawberries)! I had the pollo en salsa verde and tamales de res and they were both EXCELLENT! Many corn tamales just taste too plain for me despite having meat inside. Not these! The corn tamales are very flavorful. The chicken and beef inside tasted like a well made tamale! Tamales Liz served as a nice balance to the lobster and crab specialty restaurants in the area. Can't wait to revisit this modest little restaurant!

Pork tamale was spicy and delicious! Look at how big this thing was!!

Tried them last night and I can say that for the size and flavor, they are very good. The masa to filling ratio was good, flavor of the sauces were spot on, and the meat was tender. I tried the beef with red chile, green chile chicken, pork in red chile, pineapple (piña), and cheese with green pepper slices (queso y rajas). The beef and cheese w/green peppers were not spicy, but the flavors were great. The chicken and pork were much spicier than I expected but the flavors were great. If you can't handle spicy taco shop salsa, then be prepared for your mouth to be lit. I enjoyed the spice but since we were buying for an event with a mix of kids and adults, we went with the beef and the cheese tamales. They also have sweet ones (pineapple - this was decent, strawberry) and some corn ones that we didnt try, but I'm sure are good as well. In terms of price, the beef ones are 30 pesos and the others were 25 pesos a piece, the size is enough to make them worth it. The shop is located at the south entrance to Puerto Nuevo, you can't miss it. Definitely worth it to stop and try them out!

$1.25 per tamale! I took a chance here years ago and remembered having some of the best tamales of my life here. Came back recently and it didn't quite meet my first experience (some of the tamales were a bit dry and had skimpy fillings) but it's still better than any I've ever had. This is homemade and as fresh as they come. When you walk in you have a full view of all that they're doing in the kitchen. In the states, I'm always jealous of the tamales Mexican families eat during the holidays and here you get the same kind of time and love put into them and you don't have to wait for Christmas! I've tried all of the following; rajas de queso (roasted poblano chile strips and cheese), res (shredded beef), puerco (pork), pina (pineapple), hoja de platano (banana). I like a combination of sweet and savory so I definitely enjoy the pineapple for sweet, and either the beef or pork for savory. The poblano chile one was drier and had less filling to it but it still does a good job for a vegetarian tamale. Basically, you can't really go wrong here for tamales.

We tried them all and they were all good. My fave was el puerco. If you like tamales and drive by this place is worth a stop.

It's beyond good. Found just off the free road near Popotla, Chubby's is in a quaint location with ample room in the dining room and a nice patio to enjoy our beautiful baja climate. Looking at the menu was overwhelming with so many amazing options. I literally stared at it for what felt like an hour. So I guess coming here ripped on the devil's lettuce wasn't too smart of an idea lol. I just couldn't narrow it down. Well, eventually I did and settled on the carne asada burrito smothered in their famous green chili. And due to the fact that I didn't have breakfast, I asked them to put an over-easy egg on top for good measure. The food came out in record time and was piping hot. The green chili was literally the best I've ever had and was the perfect amount of spice to compliment my burrito. The egg on top was cooked to perfection and pulled the whole meal together very well. The owner even told me he marinades his carne asada in beer to break down the fibers, ensuring it's juicy and tender. You can actually taste it in the meat. The rice and beans were amazing, and the bacon in the beans made my bathing suit parts tickle. Forgot to add that the complimentary chips come with his famous green chili and queso for a dip. You will try to order another cup, I promise you. If you haven't been here yet, you're missing out. Put it on your list of must-eats and be sure to stop by on your way north to the border from a K38 surf trip. It's the perfect meal to soak up any hangover and prepare you for the border wait.
