As far as Mexican food goes it's mediocre. We got the carnitas which was average, Rice tasted old, tortillas were avg. Michelada was great. Tips: They don't take credit cards and they charge 10p to use their bathroom.

It never ceases to amaze me when I "google" the Internet, how little specific information there is about "real" restaurants, where "real" people, not tourists, prefer to dine. Such is the case with Magana's Tacos Restaurant Bar, located along Free Mexico Highway 1, in the small town of La Mision, about a half hour south of Tijuana. Magana's Tacos Restaurant Bar is located at KM 65, in the small town of La Mision, on the west side of FREE Mexico Highway 1. Most visitors take the scenic toll road, on the fast-track to Ensenada, but I prefer the back roads. Although Mgana's caters to highway traffic, which produces many tourists, the restaurant serves delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine, which makes a stop for breakfast totally worthwhile. Yes, Magana's is not located in Tijuana, but it is located within the Tijuana Municipality. Magana's features an open kitchen that is easily photographed. Many restaurants in Mexico feature open kitchens, or if the kitchen isn't open, all you have to do is walk in, take a photo, and leave. In the 40+ years I've visited Mexico, I've only been kicked out of a kitchen only a handful of times. My breakfast was not on the menu, so I just told them what I wanted, which is the customary thing to do in Mexico. Gee, I'm glad I know something about Mexican culture! My breakfast of corn tortillas, refried beans, fried potatoes, chorizo and two eggs over easy. This is my favorite breakfast! In Mexico, as in the U.S.A., most folks like their chorizo scrambled with the eggs, but I prefer eggs over easy, and I like the chorizo separate. So, I just tell my server, and I get it, "my way!" Magana's Tacos Restaurant Bar serves a great breakfast! As I was sitting in my car, taking notes, a gentleman approached me, and in broken English, asked me why I was taking photos. He identified himself as the owner of the restaurant, and I, basically, attempted to explain to him my mission, what I do, and how it actually benefits him. He either didn't get it, or was in a bad mood, so I left with a not-so-happy impression, and I probably won't return to the restaurant, for that reason.

This road side diner is more valuable with its good than its looks, but the service is impeccable and smiley. Great first night in Mexico!

Tasty tacos, and refreshing cocktails served in a small roadside spot. Happy to find this local gem in our quest for tacos.

On the…read moredrive down to La Misión I saw the sign for this place & thought it was an actual halfway house, but turns out its name is a reference to the fact it's located halfway bet'n Rosarito & Ensenada. First things first: ignore the menu, just ask Chef Johnny what he's got & let him do his thing. A lot of times they don't have what's on the menu so you're kind of wasting your time by choosing. We had had ribeye with a red wine demi-glace that was quite good, and fish "mojo de ajo" (with butter & garlic) that was better. Each came with a small baked potato (just the right size) and some veggies that were OK. Dinner included a tortilla soup that I was told was OK and a Caesar salad with very fresh baby Romaine and an eggy dressing. The made-to order guac was OK, but I think they put mayo in it so the avo taste got kind of lost. The chips were tasty (freshly-made) but the "salsa" was a ton of tomatoes with a few onions, not really notable. Chef Johnny once cooked for the President of Mexico; these days he lives in a trailer next to the restaurant with his wife and cooks mostly what he wants. He came out to our table & I had a great conversation with him; he's very passionate about being happy and doing what he wants and it seems to be working for him. The dude can sing, too; he's got a terrific voice & if you ask him he might croon you a tune or two. He's certainly a character and a good guy. There's a full bar and first thing you notice is they allow smoking, unlike in the States. The room is nice but nothing spectacular, and the service is attentive and friendly. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
