If you're near Rosarito this place is worth going to. It's a very interesting place. You can eat upstairs (And you should) it has a bar but also restaurant seating. From upstairs you can see the ocean. This place attracts locals & expat's alike and features karaoke on the weekends. We didn't come on a weekend, we came on a Monday and the place just had a few locals at the bar when we arrived for dinner. The food was really good, we tried too many things because the serving size is HUGE on some dishes like the shrimp molcajete & the carne asada Quesadilla. Either dish could be split between two people. My favorite thing was the fish taco and I could probably eat 2 or 3 if that's all I ordered. Bottom line the food was really good- the ambiance is kinda corky but I liked it. Our waitress was really nice although I wish we would have been warned as to how much food we were ordering- we simply couldn't finish a lot of it! Here's another spot that I've never stopped by to check out in the 30 years I've been coming here. I used to go to Ricky's place (up the road a few 100 yards) but he was closed so I opted for Charly's Place. I'm glad that I did. The 5 stars are based on the overall experience. It's not fancy or particularly nice, it's an old building, exposed cable and wires everywhere but the ambience, drinks and people are what make it and yes, the food is good too. Not the best you'll have in baja but solid. Yes, they cater to Americans. Alot of the locals residence who come in here are from the states originally but either have a house in the area or moved here. We had breakfast so we didn't have the opportunity to experience their bar seen but from the vibe I got with the people that were there, I think I would feel at home. read more

No no no, it's not the same, no more Jaime who actually cared about the place and his customers. Terrible customer service, had to get up twice to ask for stuff. They also no longer provide chips and salsa. The place was empty and now I know why. The food was way overpriced and had no flavor. There is a pizza place downstairs with an awesome brother duo who made delicious pizzas thank God for them being open because we were still hungry having not eating the crappy food that was served to us. I'm not sure of the name but I would only go back for the pizza, never stepping foot into Charley's place upstairs again and we were long time customers! We were in Rosarito for the week. Charly's Place was both recommended and nearby. We were there on a Tuesday about 7 pm, & the place was lonely w/exception of 1-2 bar customers. We selected a seat & ordered. My wife ordered tacos (which arrived cold) & I ordered a cheeseburger & fries. When the food arrived, fries were hot & delicious. The burger seemed juicy, but it was raw. The meat hadn't browned on outside & it was clearly pink. I called the waiter over and he took It back to the kitchen. A few minutes later, the cook brought it back w/abottle of red paprika. He says he adds it & THAT'S why it looked raw. Um-no. Then why is outside gray & pink inside? Stopped by here while in Baja over the weekend. Had a group of 16 and had a blast. The food was good, drinks were ice cold and the fans were on! Service is excellent, even when the place was packed. Parking is difficult but is expected in Baja. The crowd was fun and respectful. They have karaoke until 11pm which was great. Had a few beers chips with three types of dips, included queso and salsa. Their bacon wrapped hot dog was yummy and their cheeseburger was surprisingly delicious. Probably because I added a few drops of green hot sauce. Being a tourist, you hope that these types of establishments are fair and reasonably priced, which this place was. It was certainly an exceptional value. Soda, beer and margaritas are competitively priced. If you're planning on getting here during the day time, be sure to drive slowly. If you happen to visit during the evening, just look for the giant Jesus Statue. Jesus will take the wheel and steer you to a great meal. Muchas Gracias Charly's Place! Super small spot that's easy to miss. Came with my husband as we stood down the street at a resort. Saw reviews and wanted to try it out. Pina colada was just ok. I like things a bit sweet. My review is mixed. In general it's ok if you're used to American prices. If you came to Mexico for a deal, I'd go somewhere else (or at least think twice about their molcajete). At least be aware that unlike most Mexican restaurants, their prices don't include a 16% tax and they'll charge you 4% for using a credit card. So just be prepared for that. First, the pros: the food is pretty good! Got the shrimp garlic tacos on one trip and those were amazing. Got the shrimp molcajete this last time; it's pretty good (and huge!) but not worth the sky-high price (listed as 462 pesos, actually 536 with the tax). Wouldn't get it again. Service is also excellent (mostly) and I like eating on the pizza patio to feel safe while there's a pandemic going on. Now the cons: they're used to americans, so this is one of those restaurants that charge you an additional 16% tax on top of the listed price. I asked about that and they acted like it was normal, but it's NOT. The majority of Mexican restaurants I've been to, including pretty upscale ones (admittedly in TJ and not so catered to only Americans) list prices that also include the tax. So i had some sticker shock (seriously, 16%? That's higher than in Los Angeles!). It'd be more honest to just raise their prices and include the tax the way most Mexican restaurants do. Anyway, between that and the credit card fee (which due to a miscommunication with the waiter I thought I wouldn't be charged for but then was) I ended up paying 20% more than expected (pre-tip) so I'm left with the impression they see Americans as cash cows and will upcharge you as much as possible. Bathrooms and inside of the bar and restaurant was clean. Staff was nice and attentive. We need more of this in California. I had so much fun, I can't wait to go back. Authentic hole in wall cantina to grab some Mexican food and drinks. Prices are good. Not too over inflated for Americans. They give free chips and salsa with crema. Salsa was spicy but good. Had the grilled fish taco and battered fish taco. I liked the battered fish taco better. My girl got the garlic fish burrito. It doesn't come with rice or beans so have to order it on side and it's 25 pesos per each side. Piña colada was surprisingly one of best I've tried. Margarita wasn't bad. They also let us bring our puppy in to eat lunch with us which was nice. Mostly Americans eating here. Housewives having drinks and some surfer tourists. The things i didn't like about the place: - 4% surcharge if paying with credit card - upstairs too hot during day so can't really enjoy the view - they use plates wrapped with plastic bags to save them time on washing dishes. I don't like that it's worse for the environment. Every day throwing away more plastic when it's not needed. - burrito don't have rice and beans. You have to pay extra 50 pesos. I'm not sure how this place has 4.5 stars. Yes it is OK.. but that's about all. You walk in and sit where you want and are immediately brought a huge basket of fresh chips and two salsas and a cheese dip. Some have said it seems authentic... but is definitely catering to Americans. One normal salsa, one runny hot salsa and cheese sauce (not crema or anything of that nature). We ordered the shrimp omelette and while it looked good and tasted ok, we were feeling nauseous as we walked out. Not sick, but just off. The menu was also in English and Spanish, we didn't notice that the prices weren't always the same for the same item and upon getting our check were charged $127 when the menu noted $90... pointed this out and they said the menu was wrong. So we look at it again and notice the Spanish side quoted $100... even with tax added that still only gets you to $116. Whatever. They seem really confused and don't know how to fix it... I don't think it should be that hard to change the amounts you wrote on a piece of paper... you don't have a complex point-of-sale system. I would say come for a beer and the chips if you are wanting a quick stop and then leave. Not worth the hassle and mediocre food. read more

Came here for lunch. Got some tacos and chilaquiles. The prices are very reasonable. Tacos were a good size but very mild in flavor. The chilaquiles were very good and a great breakfast option. We love visiting this place when we come down to Baja. It's always a good time! The drinks are good, seafood is delicious, portions are generous, and prices are reasonable. When a place hits 26 reviews I'm typically pretty much on board with the overall rating but in this case I think that the review for Charly's Place is a little skewed. Average, average, average. They brought out two varieties of salsa, which were only different in color as they tasted exactly the same. This wouldn't be a problem if they were any good but they were watered down and bland at best. Knocking out a quality salsa should be priority number one for a restaurant in Mexico and it's sad to say that they've failed miserably here. On the other hand the fish ceviche tostadas were quite good. The best I ever had? Not by a landslide, but certainly some of the most affordable and the portion size did not suffer. I knocked all the fish off of the tostada, ordered some crackers and went to town. It's sad to say that I couldn't finish it all! No ceviche left behind! Jump in and help yourself, friends. All in all Charly's (has anyone confirmed the spelling of this joint?!) is not a bad place to dip into while cruising the Mexico coastline. Two things you need to order here: the shrimp molcajete and the Jonny quesadilla. The shrimp molcajete is pretty unique from what I've seen at other places. Let it melt the cheese for a bit then dish it into a flour tortilla, done. No tails on the shrimp so super easy to eat and not get too messy. The Jonny quesadilla was also a flavor explosion. It sort of tastes like a taco bell menu item (in a good way) and was still just as good eating the leftovers the next morning. Make a reservation ahead of time if you can for large groups and come hungry. read more
