This was a fantastic welcome to Mexico meal. Right when I thought the soft shell tacos were amazing, the fried tacos were to die for. The sopa in the soft shell tacos could've used a bit more seasoning, but the availability of fresh vegetables, from the cilantro, onions, radish, limes, and sauces were just indescribably good. The employees are really kind and attentive. They're really friendly and they had our food out in a matter of minutes. The place didn't get too loud, so it was nice for our large group to be able to hear each other from each end of the table. The sauces were so rich and helped complement the flavor of each taco. I wish I could've been able to bring a bottle of every salsa, or at least the recipe, because everything, from the salsa verde and salsa roja were the perfect amount of flavor and spice that you wanted for each. The food is amazing! In particular the bowl of birria or Queso birria tacos.. This is my favorite place to go when I'm In Rosarito. This place is a local favorite that holds down a 4.5 on Yelp for a reason!! The reason is not the ambiance, if you're looking for ambiance keep looking. Don't be surprised to find this place packed even though they have a decent amount of seating. Usually they can squeeze you in if you're in a small group but if you have a lot of people with you there could be a wait. Ultimately if you like birria or want to try it then there's no better spot its soooo good. I wish all birria places could be so good- they set the bar for me. And now when I try it at other places I'm always somewhat disappointed. If you want to try a local favorite spot, really good and somewhat inexpensive you've found it. Fast service, delicious food, and a great atmosphere. If you're in Rosarito by the bars, you can get stuck at some of those joints by default, but it's worth the drive or walk towards Popotla for Cuñado. The tacos dorados are tasty and cheap and the burrito just meat in a tortilla is very satisfying. Throw in a couple quesadillas and some drinks and the meal is complete. I recently visited El Cunado, aka the "Brother-in-law", on Valentine's Day, where the speciality is Birria, a traditional Mexican dish from the State of Jalisco. Birria is a tasty stew made with either marinated goat or beef, adobo, vinegar, dried chiles, garlic, cumin, bay leaves, and thyme. It is usually served with corn tortillas, onion, cilantro and lime. The Birria and consume is offered in different bowl sizes and is made only with beef. On this visit, I tried a bowl of Birria and two quesadillas, one with cheese only and the other with cheese and Birria. Oh My! The Birria and consume are very delicious and tasty. It had all the great flavors and it provided great comfort on this cold day. I dipped my quesadillas in the Birria consume and it really added a scrumptious flavor. The other Yelp reviews of El Cunado, are pretty accurate and I agree with my fellow reviewers. The dining area is open and the ambiance is very casual and typical for the area. The place is frequented mostly with locals and a little knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not necessary. For instance, there are no paper menus to order from and soft drinks are available in a self-serve refrigerator off to the side. The menu and prices are listed on the main wall and you order from there. The customer service is friendly and the food is served hot after a few minutes. There are no reservations and you seat yourself when you enter. After eating here I nicknamed El Cunado the "Birria-in-law" because of the family type environment and the food was delicious. We LOVE the birria here. We always come here when we come in or out of Mexico. The quality of the meat here just tastes so natural and fresh. We save our stomach for the birria because we feel each bite of the soup is revitalizing the cells of the body. The hard shell tacos (tacos dorados) are good too but nothing special. One of the best things about Baja are those tasty, made to order, street tacos, generally about a buck. Everyone has their favorite spot, and this is one of ours. There's about 4 taco shops within a few blocks, but this one is always packed with locals (I'm often the only gringo in there), opens early (they were serving up tacos and Birria at 7 am this (Sunday) morning, and has great food. We have been coming to this taco shop for at least 15 years now, and it never disappoints. The carne asada tacos topped with a bit of guacamole sauce, onion and cilantro are amazing. And the Birria - soup isn't just for lunch any more. Plenty of locals were ordering it up for breakfast, so I gave it a try, and it was delicious. Tender shredded meat in a really flavorful broth, with chopped onions, cilantro and lime, and more on the side. The birria here is absolutely amazing. The meat is juicy and the broth is perfect. My family and I have been coming here for years and the food remains just as delicious. If you are not interested in eating a bowl of birria, you can always get a birria quesadilla (corn or flour tortilla). You can ask them to no put the condiments in your food as they prepare it and prepare it at your table where they have a container with all the condiments. Half of the reviews (and photos) for the business seem to be from the restaurant next door called El Cunado "Jr." Judging from the line of locals at this restaurant (Birriera El Cunado) and the lack of clientele next door, I would guess that there is no affiliation between the two restaurants and "Jr" is trying to capitalize on the success of this place. My Daughter got a meat (they only have birria), bean & cheese burrito on a flour tortilla and the rest of us got tacos dorados con queso (crispy birria tacos with cheese, onions and cilantro.) They don't sell beer, so we got sodas. They provide fresh limes, radishes and a nice hot sauce for the tacos. I asked for a side of guacamole (because I saw it in the photos here on yelp), but they do not have guac (those photos were from the place next door.) The tacos were fantastic just as they came (although next visit I will ask for a side of onions and cilantro so that I can load more on my taco.) read more
