Coworkers and I came here on a last minute decision. A couple of them had been here before. This place appears to be an old house converted into a restaurant. In fact, it is located in a neighborhood! There appears to be plenty of parking but I would imagine excessive parking on the street upsets the neighbors. From the outside, it doesn't appear as anything special. But ambience inside was quite appealing and cozy. They start all tables with complementary bread (various types). I tried their French Country Chicken entree with a side salad. The salad was just a salad but my entree was very good. I never had this style chicken before but I was definitely surprised with its pleasant flavor. Everyone in our group seemed to really enjoy their meals. Our wait staff were very nice. But speed was a little slow...but not bad. When we left, the parking lot was so full, cars were finding unusual ways of parking. i suspect most guests know not to park on the street. This place is definitely a choice location for dinner in my book. read more

We had a wonderful relaxed evening. Some people thought it was weird that this is in a neighborhood, but we thought it was charming. Four older ladies were celebrating an 80th birthday, a group of team teenagers look like they were having a date night, and other couples were enjoying a nice evening out. The bowl of gumbo was to die for. I'm not a big gumbo person, but I could've eaten another bowl of it. The shrimp and grits were tasty. My husband had the steak. Excellent escargot, shrimp, and unbelievable complimentary mini zucchini muffins with delightfully whipped butter, and our meal was cheaper than an earlier lunch composed of appetizers at another place. We entered the restaurant at 7:50 tonight, were promptly seated and placed our order. My wife, a diabetic, took her insulin, meaning she needed to eat within 30 minutes or face serious medical issues. Our waitress brought us a second basket of bread, but never brought me the iced tea that I ordered. We did not see her after about 8:20. The dining room was empty except for us. At 8:55, we asked a passing busboy if our food was ready, or close to it. He went to get a manager. She asked us who our waitress had been, and then said, "I am so sorry this happened. We can cook whatever you would like." We left, went to Wendy's, and got food in our bellies within 7 minutes. read more

The food is ok here, not good nor bad. It's similar to the food that comes frozen in the grocery. The service is slow and the staff forgets things. They don't return so if your missing a fork or your entré you'll never get it. If your food arrived before it was ice cold you're there on a good night. Drinks are like food, discount department store quality. The restaurant is still in business because all local restaurants in Selma are bad, most very bad. My niece had been sent to Selma by her job last year for some work and called me in California to tell me how amazing it is. I was just in Lincoln visiting her this past weekend and she said we HAD to go! We got her mother in law to watch her kids and she, her husband and I took the 2 hour drive down for dinner. The restaurant opens at 5 and we walked in as the first patrons at 515. This was on a Friday night and within a half hour the restaurant was full. We were greeted warmly and sat in their beautiful dining area. It was warm and cozy, elegant and casual with soft but bright enough lighting with some jazz music playing at the perfect level in the background. Our server recognized my niece right away and welcomed her back and when she brought some water and bread, she also brought her a small bag of their zucchini muffins because she remembered how much my niece liked them. Talk about amazing service! My niece and I ordered the same things: French onion soup and filet mignon. I chose the cheese grits and she ordered the salad. Her husband ordered the chicken St. George and we all shared the fried green tomatoes with crab and hollandaise sauce. ALL of the food was OUTSTANDING. The fried green tomatoes were cooked perfectly, they were flavorful and they are not stingy with the crab. The French onion soup was maybe one of the best I've ever had that filet mignon....perfection. Cooked exactly right, very high quality and wrapped in bacon. Doesn't get better than that. Lastly, back to those zucchini muffins, they are DELICIOUS. They come with your bread basket and are dangerous. They're a little sweet and come with whipped butter but take them home with you and save room for the dinner. All in all, it was well worth the drive and I would absolutely do it again. read more

I was really impressed by my meal here! It starts with really nice warm french bread and little zucchini muffins with whipped butter. They were delicious! We had a big group and I think there were multiple big groups there the night we went because the service took forever. I got up a few times just to refill my own water. I was really happy with my meal when it finally came out though! I got the filet with a side salad. My filet was cooked perfectly and was very tender. I was impressed. My side salad was fine, I ordered blue cheese dressing and it looked like they just added blue cheese crumbles to a ranch dressing. Still, it was a great meal and I would go back again! read more

This was the most amazing food I have had in a long time. Visiting from Birmingham, Al we could not find anything in this small time that we thought would be good. We stumbled up on this place which is literally in the middle of a neighborhood. When you enter the place it starts out as fine dining. But when you want to go to the bar it is in the very back with live band. The French bread and small muffins that they give as complimentary was very good. I had the Chicken St George and it was absolutely amazing. The fried green tomato stack was good. Never had fried green tomatoes with a sauteed crab sauce on top. Ordered grilled Chicken St. George's which came with shrimp and mushrooms and I don't remember a chicken meal I have had that was as delicious as this. Small portion but very delicious. The bread and zucchini muffins were a treat! Attentive service, great iced tea, prompt on the refills. Her had the chicken St George, it was a great presentation, tasty, musta been it was there one moment and gone the next. I had the grouper Pacifica, the crab was a treat the fish was perfectly cooked, my initial thought was it was on the small side it filled me and was satisfying. The asparagus were a touch woody at the bottom but i stuck to the tops the other veggies were great. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal Son had the shrimp and grits, he devoured the sheimp, the sauce was good.i tasted. The bourbon pecan pie was shared by all three of us, it was so rich and delicious!! First, we ordered beers at 6:00. A little while later we placed our dinner order. My dad ordered the catfish and the side salad. I just ordered the French onion soup. At 6:45pm i I checked with the person who took the order and said he would check on it. When it arrived my dad got his catfish, but was missing the side salad. My French Onion soup arrived cold and salty. I sent it back. They comped my beer and French onion soup and we had to tell them that the side salad never arrived. After we paid for our meal, didn't leave a tip. And got in the truck, my dad had to stop so that I could vomit twice. So now I think I have food poisoning. The server apologized before we left and told us the soup was made Friday. Today is Saturday. Had to get my meal from Walmart instead. UGH read more

An upscale restaurant (for the area) with supper club-like menu in a log cabin like venue. I started with the fried green tomatoes with lump crab meat and (hollandaise?) sauce (*see picture). The sauce was forgettable and the appetizer needed salt, but overall it was yummy for something they recommended that I usually don't order. Many recommended the ribeye, so I went with that + "special" potato + add on of fried oysters. Not the best steak I've ever had in my life, mind you, but it was decent although I did ask for steak sauce to help (I know, not the best sign of a great stand alone steak). I loved the baked potato ("special" = cheese and sour cream already melted in). The fried oysters were delicious with some cocktail sauce and I was happy to add them to my dish. Again, for the area, I felt the Tally-Ho represented. The staff is crazy friendly and accommodating. I can understand the mediocre reviews if one puts it up against a major city (like Birmingham), but for a local looking to eat a good meal the Tally-Ho can deliver. read more

The long-time "upscale" restaurant for Selma is praised locally for its steaks (solid choices but there are better places within the Black Belt). My preference are for the shrimp and/or chicken pasta and/or rice dishes. Here you have tantalizing sauces with very fresh prepared shrimp and chicken slices. Really rich and filling. There is a separate bar--clearly the best in town--where you can order from the full menu and have a more casual vibe. The place handles groups well and the location is interesting--nestled within a suburban neighborhood. Why? The place has been there since the 1940s and the town expanded around it. Home grown and home owned. A restaurant in a log cabin with good food and true southern hospitality. Definitely worth the stop. Here's the thing with Selma. This city is dying. After a military base closed a few years ago, the city has been slowly disappearing. No chain restaurants, no malls, it's very unfortunate. I know the Tally Ho has good food, but they should really take the fried oysters off the menu. This is second time I've ordered and they're basically just large chunks of breading with tiny oysters inside no bigger than a pinto bean. Maybe it's just oyster gel . There was a time they were really big and juicy, but no more. This is the only place in town where I could get them, so it's very disappointing. I'll just go back to making my own from scratch with my mother's old recipe. read more

I had high hopes for this place as it seems to be the only choice for semi-upscale dining in Selma. I was craving a great steak and had heard they had the best. Unfortunately, I have to concur with the rest of the reviewers: It's just ok. Not good, not bad, ok. The part I liked most was seeing the trees with the Spanish moss outside. The log cabin and fox hunt motif is ... odd. Interesting, but strikingly out of place in Selma. The waitress was very nice, as was the gentleman who cleaned my table afterward. I began with fried artichoke hearts, which were melt-in-the-mouth good, but there were only eight of them. There was no bread on the table as some have mentioned, but my appetizer came almost immediately. I polished it off in about five minutes. I would have liked more, but the honey mustard dip was an odd combination and over-powered the delicacy of the artichoke. They brought a salad which appeared to be iceberg lettuce with a tomato wedge and some cheese. Luckily, my ribeye appeared about five minutes after that. Speedyl for a Friday night, but they weren't very busy. The steak was a huge disappointment, especially for $21. It looked beautiful, but it was extremely tough. I gave up about halfway through, because I was weary of sawing away at it. The flavor was good, though it lacked a good smoky taste. I ordered medium rare, but I believe I got well-done. I'm not sure, because I could barely see my plate in the candlelit room. I ordered the "special" baked potato, which is just a potato with cheese. It was actually very good. I liked it better than the steak. Their sweet tea was good, too. I ordered Snickers pie to go, and it was tasty. I was a bit taken aback when a waiter came to my table and, without saying anything, began gathering the extra plates and silverware. It was about 15 minutes until they closed, but the restaurant still had a number of people, including one or two who had just arrived, so I felt like he could have waited or at least made some pleasantry. As it was, I just felt like an annoyance. Before I left though, I encountered another young man cleaning tables, and he smiled and we exchanged a few nice words, leaving me with a smile on my face. I didn't catch his name, but he should be commended for his professionalism and friendliness, as should the waitress. The atmosphere is nice -- candles on the tables and sort of dressy-casual. It would look nicer with white tablecloths instead of brown paper on the tables -- or just wooden tables -- but it didn't really matter. I think they could be wildly successful here -- their staff is nice, the building is cool, and the atmosphere is good. But the food -- the main reason you go out to eat -- just isn't worth the price. I couldn't read my receipt in the dim light, but I suspect it added up to around $40, then add the additional $10 I tipped the waitress. It was nice to be able to say I ate there as it seems to be "sort of a thing," but I doubt I will return. read more

Tally-Ho is hands-down the best restaurant in Selma and worth the trip! I had the grilled chicken, mashed red potatoes, and steamed asparagus. Everything tasted fresh, delicious, and just like grandma's Sunday cooking! I loved exploring the original log cabin, complete with cedar-log walls and sloping floors. The owner and hostess are good people, too. They went out of their way to make sure I enjoyed both my meal and my visit to Selma. read more

There are a few times in life when a place really has your mouth watering on their foods offered when you view the menu. Tonight, this was not that place. Fried crab claws, ribey, twice baked potato, sweet tea = $41. I live steak and eat it frequently! While the crabclaws I've had before from other places, these were less than par. They came out with tarter sauce and cocktail sauce. That is not how you served the guys first of all. They should be served with a sweeter style sauce like wine and cheese or honey mustard etc to combat the saltiness and blow off that wonderful flavor. These were cooked in a wet to dry batter that was too liquid as there was hardly any batter on them. They were also over cooked and were quite rubbery in chew. While the steak was exceptionally flavored and nice, it was poorly presented. The steaks are offered in one size of 12 oz. I asked if they could cut me a 16oz. I was told no because they were already cut. The grade of meat is definitely the cheaper cut of Select. Using a low grade beef yields a steak that ends up looking like two small hamburger steaks without the gravy due to the high marbling content. I ordered MR and my steak came out MW; zero pink which is another reason the 12 oz is a poor option when using Select grade beef. The twice baked potato was not a twice baked potato. It was a baked potato with melted cheese on it. I didn't get any additional condiments for it such as butter and sour cream, bacon, chives, etc etc. While the food was less than par for the price, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. My review is accompanied by a big appetite for food and years experience cooking and owning a steak and seafood restaurant. My thought is that this place used to really be a hopping joint and decisions to cut back on food and cook training has lead it to where it is now. Struggling from week to week to pull in those once coveted patrons. My suggestion is to splurge on the grade of beef and go for choice and changed the crab claws to a nice thick beer batter wet to dry. Cut out a non essential salad dressing that doesn't perform and get yourself some wine and cheese dressing from your food rep if you can't make it yourself. You can thank me later when I visit again in hopes of some changes. read more
