Me and my Fiancé usually always enjoy our food when we visit The Sandbar. This most recent visit though, was very unexpected. We were met with our usual burger-- but without any flavor. It fell apart into pieces as if it was grounded up for taco meat. I genuinely thought something may have been up with the fridge or something... but we were told it was just fresh beef and that they've never used any seasoning for their burgers. I was so confused... How did our previous burgers taste absolutely delicious and these tasted dull? Slimy? I'm not even sure how to describe the taste or texture honestly. "Well if you've been here before, what's wrong with what you ordered?" Was a response from one of the ladies behind the bar. If anything, I feel as though us saying it usually has SO much flavor is a huge compliment... we were just curious and still intended to pay for our meal. $60 dollars later, me and my fiancé agreed that we would be taking a break from The Sandbar for a little while. read more

You would not believe how absolutely pitifully bad this place is. I am appalled they call this a restaurant. The food was literally inedible it was so tough and cold. All four people at the table ordered shrimp and fries. The shrimp was cold as if it had been in a cooler or sitting on the counter for a long while. The fries were mushy and soggy. Portion sizes were frankly heinous. I paid 23.60 for 6 small shrimp and roughly 20 soggy fries with a sweet tea (that I had to ask to get refills every time) I would tell anyone to run far far away from this joke of a restaurant. read more

Being new to Selma, we were eager to pop out and try the local eateries. We had relatives driving through from Atlanta on their way to Colorado who met us for lunch at the Sandbar. It was our first and only visit to this restaurant. The food was without a doubt not up to par. Two of us ordered BLT sandwiches, one of the easiest things to make on the planet. They both arrived flat, on soggy bread, and with barely anything in them. We were stunned and looked at each other in disbelief. They were terrible. The onion rings were good. However, I didn't get the ranch dressing I requested when I ordered them. I asked the waitress again and she said she might have time later to bring some over to me. Seriously? Nobody else could just pop them off on their way by? Our relatives ordered okra and a shrimp salad or something like that. They offered us some of the okra. All four of us said how slimy and flavorless it was. None of us fully ate our meals. I felt bad for them since they had to hit to road for a long drive to a hotel in another state. They said they would look for something else to eat on their way. It was embarrassing. I've been in business and in customer service for over 40 years. There is never an excuse to have that sort of meal served to a customer and that poor level of customer service. It is a shame since the location is cute and is near the water. read more

Visited The Sand Bar while having a day trip in Selma. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. First, the place has a lot going for it atmospherically. It's built way up in the air. There's a patio area below the main body of the restaurant, and a porch up on stilts, both with views of the Alabama River. The inside is a little sports bar. We sat up high on the outdoor porch as it was a beautiful day. The food was also pretty good. The fries were fresh and nicely seasoned and my boyfriend liked his wings - Frank's Red Hot! The chicken tenders had some spice in the breading that I wasn't super crazy about, but they were alright. A good size for the money. The ranch tasted like it was made in-house. Yum! Other offerings included burgers and tacos. The down point would be the service. Our waitress wasn't terrible, but she seemed disinterested and at times came off a little cold. My main problem, though, was that she left us sitting on the patio for 25 minutes after she delivered the check. It was a nice day, but we were ready to go - it would have been better if she'd let us pay and then leave at our own discretion, rather than assuming we wanted to sit on the porch for much longer. Overall, I'd consider returning if I was in the area - there aren't a ton of options - but it's not necessarily a place I'd crave. read more

My sister and I ate here several times during our recent visit to Selma, and thought it was one of the best lunch options around! The food was solid and the view of the Alabama River was relaxing. I enjoyed the patty melt, the shrimp tacos, and the barbecue tacos. This was a really cute spot on the lake with friendly service and delicious drinks. We took advantage of the frozen Wendy's style concoction. The bartender Noah, was awesome and agreed to blend some flavors. They had so much flexibility and good pub food. They stay open really late. Probably the only place in the little town of Selma. It's great to see a small business doing well during such a challenging year. My wife and I had a wonderful lunch at The Sandbar just a few days before Christmas. The location is just off the water at the small Selma Marina. I enjoyed the fried catfish basket while my wife enjoyed the house salad. We were impressed with both the serving size and quality of food. Our server, who we found out later was the owner, was excellent. The restaurant was nicely busy for lunch, and everyone seemed to be really enjoying their food of this hidden gem. If you find yourself in Selma, do stop by and enjoy this lovely spot! read more

Went there during an impromptu trip to Selma in Dec 2020. The restaurant is on the banks of Alabama river, has an outdoor patio that offers good views of the river. We sat inside and the tables were well spread out for COVID-19. Place was clean. We ordered shrimp taco (v.good), chicken wings (ok), fried cheese curds (ok), shrimp basket (ok). Best part of the food was the fries (excellent). Overall, for a small town like Selma, I would give this 4 stars. read more

How have I been to Selma three other times and no one, (and I mean NO ONE) told me the Sand Bar existed? I happened to pick up a little local culture pamphlet at the hotel (I know, on my last visit, shame shame) and saw several restaurant listings that haven't made it to Yelp! yet, so obviously this means that I did indeed have to visit. First to get here, it is down the city walk which I felt really weird driving down, even though it was obviously a road to the Marina. Drive out to the ball field and farmer's market and you'll see a yellow sign, turn there and just keep on going (just not onto the boat launch or into the water!) I went in and asked if they took cards (they do) and where to sit. I chose a seat out on the deck, as it was rapidly cooling off. Plus the view was pretty nice for the location. They do boast "burgers by the river", and the menu doesn't consist of too much more. There were burgers, 2 steaks, several fried chicken tender and fried fish options, and the typical slew of fried appetizers you only see in the deep south such as bottle caps (fried jalapenos). There were also 3 salad options, I went with a grilled chicken salad. They have a small bar and bar menu with a special punch, a few liquors (crown royale, jack daniels, jose cuervo stood out to me) and a handful of bottled beers. My food came out very quick and the chicken was incredibly well seasoned, it wasn't southern tasting/barbequey but it had a liberal dose of cracked black pepper. The salad was lots of shredded romaine, diced tomato, and onion. The description mentioned pickles should be on it, but there weren't any, I probably didn't need more salt, anyway. They had the typical "southern" salad dressings: honey mustard, ranch, blue cheese, and thousand island. They had the atypical balsamic vinaigrette, thankfully. I sat and ate my food and listened to the local ladies gossip and enjoyed the view. I could totally imagine having drinks on the deck at night with the christmas lights on and people out on the water. The inside reminded me of a cabin, in a good way, lots of hardwood paneling and just a hint of the long familiar (to me at least) sawdust scent. There is bar and table seating inside. Things I must ding them on: Styrofoam EVERYTHING. What is the South's love and obsession with styrofoam? It alters the taste of everything and never leaves this earth. Even my meal came in a weird styrofoam platter. If you don't offer to go cups invest in some plastic tumblers and show the earth you like that it allows the human race to inhabit it. Please... I didn't know what to do when I was done eating. The waitress never came back. There were trashcans on the deck, but then I had a real fork. I decided to toss the sytrofoam (cringe) wrap the fork in a napkin and be like...I didnt know what to do, and go pay at the bar. My suggestions because this seems to be a place in its infancy, is to for one, have slightly older, maybe more personable waitresses. Also make some sort of spiel if you need to clear your own place or not outside. And a cocktail list....twerk with what ya stock and make a few killer $6 cocktails besides the punch especially if drinks will only contain a single shot of alcohol in them....make them more reasonable read more

Food is awesome... however, We waited 25 mins for our drinks. Ordered two apps cause we had a lot of people. One app came out. Tried to order a top shelf Long Island - was informed it would be well over $30. Everyone else's food came out a solid 10 mins before mine. I was the only female at the table so all the guys waited for mine to come out ( out of respect) I ate my warm food , they ate theirs cold. Oh and on the menu the seafood boil is $28... bill stated $35 and the server just said " we haven't updated our prices". Long short, call ahead ... order your food , still be prepared to wait at the table for another 20 mins. Don't order apps, don't order anything top shelf, and ignore the prices on the menu and you'll have a fantastic time! read more

I travel for a living and finding a restaurant open for seating, during this pandemic, is hard to find in some towns. I'm so grateful that The Sandbar is open for both pick up and dine in! This restaurant was suggested to me and it did not disappoint! I had the Chicken Michelle, authentically grilled chicken with sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms in a Sherry cream sauce that is out of this world! This restaurant has a relaxed feel near a small but quaint marina. The full bar offered everything from frozen specialty drinks to beer. My choice tonight was a crisp sparkling champagne! It was ok. There aren't a lot of options in this sleepy little town. The food was fine. Service was good. Beer was cold. The bugs were BAD.

Giving 1 star only because 0 stars wasn't an option. I have given chance after chance, this marks my 4th attempt with the exact same outcome. The first marks a trip their opening week to which I was seated for over and hour and 15 minutes waiting for a chicken wrap, when I asked how much longer they haven't even began making it, I made my initial review and was asked to try them again with promises that it wouldn't happen. As you read below it not only happened to me but north of 35 people that evening. Since this post they have began disabling reviews on Thier Facebook page. Today after laying my grandfather to rest, we decided to all eat together and catch up. We arrived and the business was nearly empty. With us came north of 35 people (which I can understand can put a strain on a business ). We arrived around 3:45 pm and were seated outside due to size. After being seated we placed our orders and expected some delays. Drinks eventually trickled in about 20minutes later followed by mugs of tea for self service refills while we waited, of which were busted and leaking all over the tables. Around 6:15pm our food arrived . 1 chicken wrap with fries , 1 catfish wrap, and 1 order of chicken strips. The fries were substituted for sweet potato fries without my knowledge, chicken strip meal was delivered with 3 small river rocks that they tried to pass off as chicken, and the whole order was ice cold and loaded in salt. The meal was hardly even edible, and complete highway robbery to the atune of $35. On top of all this my family members place orders at the same time for 4 people and only get 1 plate of food and an order of pickles completely lost the remaining items on the order ( wrote on same ticket mind you) and were never even made. Now they leave after a little over 3 hours with 2 starving kids and a $26 bill for the one meal and drinks. The table manners of the server were beyond poor as well as the over all experience. People arriving long after we were seated had both ordered, eaten, paid, and left before we had the first item in the order arrive. I have given this business all the chances I can allow for over priced food, empty promises, and poor service. I will actively warn anyone and everyone to avoid this place at all costs. I cannot find a single positive thing to say about my experiences with this business and their lack of professionalism and customer priority. This is by far my worst experience in any restaurant. It is unacceptable and you should be ashamed. read more

Waited 25 minutes without being greeted. Waitress walked past our table several times to service the two tables that surrounded us. When asked to speak to manager/owner she dismissed our concerns. Failed to apologize. Stated she didn't know what happened.. so what are you drinking. Nothing was our response and she stormed off with attitude. We watched another couple come in and they were treated the same way and chose to leave. You will have better luck being treated well in this establishment if you are not of color. read more

This place is a great find. Perfect place to grab a bite and a brew right on the river. This place has a large deck and quaint inside area. There is a nice view of the boat launch and river. The food was good and very reasonably priced. The service was also great. Everyone was friendly and my water glass was never close to being empty. They have a wide variety on the menu. The corn nuggets were very good. I had the shrimp wrap, which was loaded with shrimp and very tasty. My buddy had the oyster Po-boy and it was a winner as well. read more

To begin with, this was the only sit down restaurant open in Selma to choose from. A couple of thoughts come to mind when describing the sandbar: clown show, dumpster fire, poop scented candles. They ran out of chicken wings somehow and didn't inform us until 30 minutes after we had ordered. So we cancelled those and didn't reorder anything but waited for the rest of our order. Another 15 minutes later goes by and a seafood boil comes out. We patiently wait until the food comes out for two other tables that arrived nearly 45 minutes after we had arrived, at this point we were asking what's going on. Apparently we were the victim of two kitchen snafus and had to wait another 15 minutes for the rest of our food. The entire restaurant that arrived after of us was at this point already served and long gone. The manager apologized and said she would discount our meal. 15 minutes later when our check arrives, no discount, we paid, we left to never return again. read more

We came to the Sandbar in late February as the sun was setting, and were greeted warmly by the new owner. Amazing hospitality! I'm a vegetarian and had a lots of appetizers and sides to chose between - had fried veggies and whipped potatoes- delicious. My wife had the catfish tacos and loved them. Would be so good... But... I got a sunburn from the bright lights. I really don't feel like having cocktails in a place so brightly lit. Also, if you order wings "naked" plan to wait as the staff thought it was a joke and my wings took about an hour. This place could be great, we'll try again in a few months. read more

Our waitress was so funny and down to earth.. wished i could remember her name ,i do remember she said she was from gulf shores alabama.. at first we started at a table inside.. but there was a group of 6/8 adults who were screaming over each other.. so we moved outside table. we had 4 adults 1 teenager. 3 adults ordered cheese burgers.. each to our own taste... teen ordered chicken finger basket.. the last adult ordered a grilled catfish plate on a bed of grilled oinons , bell peppers, banana peppers and diced tomatoes.. we waited 1 hour and 46 mins for !!!!!! 1 cold mushroom swiss burger , cold onion rings,that was battered in same as fish, onions rings tasted more fishy than oinons, plus mayo i ask to be omited and no sourdough bread the menu offers.. next burger and oinon rings were cold and soggy... next burger and fries were cold and looked to be thrown together, was spots of greese on side of plate where the greese from the beef had harden.. teens chicken fingers basket said it was good.. and then there was the catfish plate.. 3 peices of grilled NOT FRIED as requested* 2 inches long roughtly 1 inch wide* the bell peppers and onions were barley cooked and the banana peppers were cold like they were took from the ice chest. NO TOMATOES btw, took another 10 mins to get the"garlic" bread for the catfish plate brough that was forgotten brought in a paper towel not even a small plate.. Bye the time our food come out our sweet waitress had went home but not before she brought us plentiful of sweet/unsweet tea.. i has to go and get forks and napkins for all of us. Grand total price $69.10 . we ate it cause we was starving and was scared of how long it would take to send it back.WE ARE A GROUP OF 4/5 THAT TWICE A MONTH LIKE TO EAT AT DIFFERNT PLACES , not hard to please,just fond of our orders right especially waiting over an hour and a half. My daughter, a friend and I were in town for an event and hadn't been to Selma before. Two of us looked for a place to eat in advance and both chose the Sandbar so we had high hopes. We should have known better and turned around when we pulled into an empty parking lot at 6:30 on a Sat night. There was only one table with customers. We were greeted and seated immediately. Drink orders taken and served. My daughter ordered corn nuggets (a childhood favorite) for an appetizer that was served promptly. She ordered wings and fries and my friend ordered the fish and shrimp basket. I asked our waitress what kind of steak was served with the Supreme Plate? (chicken, catfish or steak with grilled onions, tomatoes and banana peppers) Sirloin I was told. Good. After a while the fried basket and Supreme Plate were served. (The wings took about 10 minutes longer to come out.) The Supreme Plate was grilled, shaved beef (like for Philly Cheesesteak) over a plate of grilled onions, bell pepper and banana peppers. That's it. No tortilla, bun, side dish. That's it. Strange. Three bites and the steak was gone. I was still hungry so I ordered onion rings. They were definitely hot and fresh but there was almost no batter on them at all. I took a bite, tasted something odd I couldn't identify and chose not to eat anymore. The others tasted a bite and agreed. Our server was good but I can not recommend the food at all. Since we never saw additional customers, we could only assume others agreed. read more

Whoa that was surprisingly good. The new bar has been entirely rebuilt and the inside is clean and smoke free. The service was really slow the day we went but they were extra busy due to a fishing tournament on the river. However, when our food did arrive it was piping hot and delicious. We ordered the smoked tuna which was just okay but the hamburgers were excellent. I would definily go back if I ever visit Selma again. read more

Wow, we both had the catfish and fries and arrived 1/2 hour before closing on a miserable rainy day. How blessed were we to come to such an inviting restaurant with such a graceful owner and the best fish and fries we have ever had.
