Although the Tallman website looks like it may have been redone since I stayed there (and it looks great), it still can't do justice to this charming place! I stayed there at the recommendation of a local colleague and hated having to leave. Room was impeccably clean and charming in every way with a great bath tub (important!). Even fresh cookies by the bedside. I ordered food from the Blue Wing (yum!) and relaxed on the little balcony looking out at the glow of the lights on the tree-lined courtyard (which looked great if you are having a gathering with friends). This would be an excellent weekend getaway if you are looking to explore Lake County wineries, the lake, or if my fellow Bay Area people want a change of scene getaway that is not too far (but far enough to feel different). The hotel has several different types of accommodations like one story private rooms and then upstairs rooms with a lobby. Oh man this hotel was great. I loved how private the room felt. Wish the pool and hot tub were open during our stay but luckily we got a room with an ofuro bath and my god was it worth the extra money. This place is perfect for a romantic get away. They give you cookies upon your arrival which I thought was a nice touch. Staff was cool, few interactions but very friendly. We had to get our breakfast Togo and the avocado toast with eggs was amazing. Simple but they seasoned it very well. I recommend going for a stroll at night, they light the place very beautifully. My experience at the Tallman hotel was one of a kind! I was warmly greeted by the gal at the front desk, and felt so at home. I had the fortune opportunity to perform at the restaurant just a couple feet across from the hotel with my band based out of San Francisco. And Louis, I stayed the night at the hotel, it at the restaurant, and played music, and made a bunch of new friends! The local coffee shop is great and serves blackout coffee roasters at a Ukiah, the hotel reminded me of classy meets vintage, meets a feeling of being at home and uniqueness. Oh and you get chocolate chip cookies at ur bed when you arrive! read more

We always stay at the Tallman when visiting family in Lakeport. Arriving after the long drive from LA is a balm to body and soul. Delightful surroundings, reasonably priced local wine chilling in the fridge, and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies welcome us upon arrival. For our ten year anniversary, my wife brought me to upper lake for the first time, to stay at this historical gem. The rooms are warm and inviting (although the bat picture takes a minute), and the tub out back was a delectable luxury of warmth and enjoyment in the rain. Only grocery after 8 is by the city sign as you enter town. Stick up if you don't want to eat out for every meal. The entire town is RIGHT THERE. Just spent a marvelous 2 days & a night here. A delightful little - 16 room - garden historic hotel that was restored in 2003. The original hotel was built in the 1870's and was operated as a hotel, resort & boarding house until the 1960's when it was closed and not reopened again until 2003. In kind of a funky little northern California town - Upper Lake - at the north end of Clear Lake (a large lake). The Clear Lake region is a resort and water destination area with lots of little towns with cabins, boating, and other water related sports activities. A number of wineries are also in the area. Many vacation homes and summer places are available, but none more unique or elegant than the Tallman Hotel. The rooms are large and appointed with care. Every detail has been carefully added - - down comforter on the king size bed, English bath essentials, robes, DVD player w/free DVDs in the office, mini bar, etc. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. A delightful light breakfast was included in the price of the room and served with care. There was a wedding party in 13 of the 16 rooms the night we were there and we were totally unaware they were even there. The rooms are quiet and well insulated from outside noices. Of course, all we had to do was open the door onto our 2nd story porch to hear the marvelous light jazz band that was playing in the garden at brunch time the Sunday morning we were there. I truly only have two little complaints about the entire experience. One, there was a section of the garden walkway from the main building to the building where our room was located that was gravel. Because it had been raining, our shoes and luggage tracked gravel into the room and onto the carpet. They need to add some type of walkway in this small section - perhaps some large pieces of flagstone. Two, the breakfast coffee was very weak - what I call Utah coffee, sort of brown water. Of course, I am a typical Californian, I like strong coffee. Other than those two tiny complaints, the rest of this hotel experience was marvelous. I truly wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to my dearest friends and family and I will return the first opportunity I have. If you are looking for loud, flashy and roudy, this isn't your place. If you are looking for an elegant, friendly and quiet place to escape the hustle and bustle, you will not be disappointed. We've dined at the Blue Wing Saloon a few times and finally stayed at the Tallman - phenomenal is a good starting expression!! The staff is ever so sweet, extremely helpful and the accommodations were even better than the photos depict. The soaking tub was absolute bliss, and we used it a few times each day. The desk staff went so far as to contact the owner of a local winery of which we had wanted to visit, and he offered to come open the tasting room on a day when closed. Don't miss this one read more

As I remembered it from five years ago, the hotel was comfortable, pretty and peaceful. Comfortable beds, quiet. Could not use porch because of cooking smells from the restaurant below so choose a different room. Breakfast was nice. Good coffee. Pool area could use some TLC plus towels would be nice! Staff at hotel were excellent, polite and friendly. Dinner at the restaurant next door was unremarkable and a bit more staff familiarity with the wine list would have been nice i.e. that is not a dry Riesling. We paid $247 to stay one night last week. Our room was on the second floor so had to walk up 20 steps to get there. I did not expect an old hotel to have an elevator, but I did expect to have the young guy at the desk ask to help with the luggage, but he did not. I'm only 78 so I guess thats ok. I would expect for $247 to get a bit of wine/cheese in the afternoon, but there was none of that. And at night when they lock the doors they also shut off all the overhead lights in the lobby, so I could not read there. Internet service did not work in our room, but did in the lobby. They do bring a contenintal breakfast- coffee, juice and rolls to your room in the morning. Wife wanted the breakfast sandwich which was an extra $8 plus tax. Room was small but nice, with a door to the porch with chairs and table- the best part of the whole place. You decide what you expect for $247. Maybe I expect too much. read more

I've already been warned by one male Yelper to stop raving about the awesome plans my husband made to surprise me for my birthday. It seems my man has raised the bar for significant others world wide. At the risk of a couple of broken kneecaps, I've decided to proceed sans caution. Devil may care. The Tallman Hotel is worth the crutches. When considering my review for this restored late 1800s hotel, it was hard to pick apart which parts of the review were hotel specific, and which were about the adorable town in general. Hotel Specific: * Private Japanese soaking tub in the walled-in backyard porch. * Romance package: roses, champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries. * Wine Tour package: glug, glug, and scenic vistas. * In room massage. * Yummy Molton Brown bath products (http://www.moltonbrown.com). * Squishy bed. * Immaculate, fancy room with modern amenities. * Adjacent Blue Wing Saloon & Cafe for hungry times. * SuperStaff. General Town: * About eight stores on one tiny main street. (Charmingly, all but one close at 5pm.) * The one that stays open until 7pm is a wine tasting bar. Yeehaw! * Ridiculously friendly, small town people who allow you to be yourself without judging your damn shoes and hair all the time. We went to a local yard sale, and the people invited us into their home to see some art they had... and it wasn't creepy at all to comply. We scored a camera tripod for $2! We also bought homemade jam and got our ears talked off by elderly women at a local craft sale/fundraiser. And we won a raffle prize, which the nice ladies delivered to our hotel while we were out wine tasting. Happy sigh. My faith in humanity is restored. San Francisco is great, cosmopolitan fun, but if you grew up in a small town and sometimes need a reminder of what the real world looks like, visit Upper Lake. When you see a lot of glowing reviews of a property it usually makes me wonder how accurate they are. But my wife surprised me with a stay at the Tallman Hotel for my birthday and I want to tell you this is going to reinforce those glowing reviews. Living just a few miles from the property I've been there a few times to the Blue Wing Saloon and toured the hotel but never stayed until now. I'm glad I did! The room that we stayed in is room #9 which has a Japanese soaking tub in a garden outside. The room is really spacious and very comfortable. You have a porch on the front to relax and enjoy any music at the hotel or adjacent Blue Wing Saloon and then a nice little patio in the back that has that soaking tub. The room, the property and everything about it are absolutely immaculate. It's clear that their housekeeping procedures are very effective and the staff really, really cares about the guests. Not a speck of dust, towels all clean and neatly folded, bed beautifully made. I also own a resort and the attention to detail here is absolutely impressive. Everything in the room works perfectly and the quality of the supplies and linens are first-rate. Frankly, if you're in the hotel business you could come stay at this property to set an example for how to run a place - it's that well done. The Butcher family that owns the place have absolutely found their calling. I believe all this property was renovated 10 years ago but it might as well have been yesterday given the first-rate condition of everything in the room. The decor in the room fits the vintage hotel without being cheesy or dated feeling at all. Whoever decorated this place should probably have it first on their resume, it's very tastefully done with a recognition of the past without feeling dated. Nice job. Perhaps my favorite part of the room/experience was outside in the soaking tub. These are deep wooden tubs that are filled with 98° water. Unlike most spa tubs, you can get your entire self under the nice, still, warm water. If you're feeling stressed or grouchy this will solve that. These are a nice touch and both my wife and I fit comfortably in the tub and neither of us are small people. Sitting in the tub listening to the birds and watching the trees sway was really a terrific experience. Good bye blood pressure medication, hello Japanese soaking tub! There is no 'but' at the end of this review. There is no "for the money" or anything like that. Bottom line I was really, really impressed with my stay at the Tallman Hotel on every level. The people are nice, the place is immaculate and it is a quality experience. So it's great if you're coming to the area to visit or even if you live a few miles away and want to feel like you've traveled to a wonderful and different place. I'd never been in the area and wasn't sure what the stay would be like, but this was a fantastic hotel. I would stay here again any day! I stayed in a garden cottage and it was beautifully decorated and large. I asked for the brand of pillow because it was so comfortable. The breakfast was outstanding, with homemade scones. The burger I ordered at the saloon was great. Other than getting eaten by mosquitos while sitting outside at the saloon, my stay was perfect. read more

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by the helpful woman behind the desk and continued to receive stellar customer service throughout our time here. Our room had everything we could have ever asked for for a relaxing weekend in Lake County. We chose the lower garden room with the Ofuro soaking tub and it was a fantastic addition to the adorable patio. What a luxury to sit in the tub on a cool fall afternoon! Blue Wing Saloon is another great part of the Tallman Hotel- it was great to walk across the courtyard and grab a drink. We were also asked at check in if we wanted to make dinner reservations here. You can't beat the price for what you get here- hotels with similar amenities go for double and triple the price in Napa/Sonoma counties. I also found the Tallman during my favorite old-lady pastime, reading Sunset Magazine. They actually reviewed it about 4 times over 3 months. The Tallman is so freaking cute and wonderful. The private Ofaru soaking tubs are amazing; they are on these awesome private decks with 2 sets of French doors opening onto them. Plus the rooms are adorable, painted wallpaper and cable TV so you don't even have to leave your room. There isn't much to do in Upper Lake - there is a cool antique plumbing barn next door and some antique shops but that's pretty much it. It is a little expensive and a hike from SF but we did this mid-week couples deal and got a room with a bottle of cheap champagne and some chocolate for $100 or something. I don't think they do that anymore though. High recommended for some midweek-romance-work-skipping time. read more

Tallman hotel is a legitimate hotel in the Upper Lake area. The rooms are large and cozy, and there's most of the amenities you would expect: wifi, television, complementary breakfast, etc. Some of the rooms include a balcony or even a jacuzzi outside. They seem to take pride in their housekeeping as the rooms were clean and nothing seemed out of order. The employees were very friendly and even gave some tips on the area. There's also the saloon right downstairs where you grab a convenient bite to eat. I was very impressed by the hospitality and tranquility of the main area. Although one of the nights, they did have live music playing which was nice. There's the Running Creek Casino a few blocks away, but besides that not much else. Breakfast was good; be sure to try the scones and muffins! read more

We stumbled upon this gem in Sunset Magazine and decided to take a trip and try it out. We flew into Sacramento and drove about 2 hours north through some beautiful countryside. As a designer, I usually spot something that a hotel/inn gave up or didn't design. I couldn't find that at Tallman. They did a wonderful job at everything. There is not much to do in the immediate area, but the coast is just a day trip away and there are multiple wineries in the area. Tallman is a very quiet hotel/inn with a small pool and hot tub. We got the room with the outdoor patio and japanese soaking tub--very nice. I highly recommend this get-away. The hotel staff was very kind but not overly nice. read more

My husband and I just returned from a 2 night stay in this wonderfullly restored historic hotel in Upper Lake. If you are in need of a restful get-away, I highly recommend this hotel. We stayed in one of the garden rooms with our private ofuro japanese soaking tub and outdoor shower (there's one inside too if you're feeling modest). It was heavenly. The room was quiet (#5), it had a little front porch with chairs as well as our own private patio with the tub and shower. There is a pool and jacuzzi on the property but since it was around 100 degrees outside it was a tad hot to sunbathe, so we just dangled our feet in the pool for a bit to cool off. The complimentary breakfast was more than enough to get the day started and I love that they served organic coffees and fresh fruit, quiche, hard-boiled eggs, freshly baked scones, yogurt and a variety of different breads with their own canned jams (blackberry and peach, while we were visiting). The adjacent Blue Wing Saloon is a great little spot with outdoor dining for lunch and dinner, so you never have to get in a car if you don't want to. They also have live music, so check the hotel events schedule to see what's going on. Also, if you're in need of some additional R&R, the M.D. Spa across the street is a great place for massage and detox and it's very affordable. All in all, we are thinking about making this an annual trek from the Bay Area. On the way home, we stopped off at Tulip Hill and Ceago Winery (owned by the Fetzer's) to do some wine tasting. There are great views of the lake from Ceago and if you want, you can buy a bottle of wine and have yourself a little picnic on their property. read more

Even though we live locally, my wife and I like to stay at the Tallman once or twice a year. It's such a well-done hotel that you feel like you're in another place--without having to drive too far! The showers, bath tubs, and soaking tubs rule at the Tallman. The breakfast is tasty. The rooms and lobby are decorated beautifully. The Blue Wing Saloon next door serves up some of the best food in the county, so that's handy! The Tallman hotel is the epitome of gracious, rustic charm. We were there for an evening with the entire family, so we were more focused on family fun than exploring the town (no town to speak of, just a tiny street with odd stores and the feeling one might hear banjos at any minute or see a tumbleweed roll by). From the spot-on decor to the little luxuries in the room, we were absolutely enchanted. We were also able to chat with the owner, who was an affable fellow with some fun stories about the place. Do be aware that everything around the hotel closes early, and the on-site saloon shuts down at 9pm. I got the chance to stay at this hotel while I was in town on a business trip. I stayed for a total of three nights. The rooms were very clean, and well decorated. The young lady who checked me in was very informative and friendly. I am giving this place four stars because they placed two pending charges on my account in the amounts of $170.00 and $50.00. I guess since I used my debit card for the required security deposit, they ended up having to cancel out the $170.00 and charged me a $50.00 deposit instead. In the end, I had two seperate charges on my account. Other than that, this place was nice. :) read more

I love staying at the Tallman! My family and I were visiting family in the area and we always stay at the Tallman, as it is truly the most quaint, historic, loveliest hotel for many miles. I always knew these things, but what I didn't know is how well the staff takes care of you when you are not feeling well! Unfortunately I came down with a stomach ailment while there.I blame it on too much Thanksgiving food. However in spite of this predicament. I had the best experience with their staff member Martin. He was very kind and thoughtful with his empathetic words and exhibited such a high level of customer service. This type of interaction means the world to a person who was as sick as I was.
