The inn itself is owned by the Miwuk Indian tribe who spent 10 years renovating original cottages at the site into an extraordinary property. My ADA room was well planned to make my stay easy and safe. I was impressed by the woodwork. I had a small " kitchen" area where special treats had been left for me to enjoy. The balcony was large and inviting. Who fell asleep on the lounger looking out over the ocean? That would be me! A wooden sidewalk would have taken me safely to the hot tub, but I was happy in my room area. Staff lived up to the 5 stars I am giving the Inn. Welcoming, concerned for my safety and comfort. Really enjoyed my stay here, the grounds were well kept and everything looks newly developed. The plants were all on point too. I was pleasantly surprised that the views shown in photos is accurately depicted as to what you will get. The staff were very friendly, approachable, and helpful during the entire stay there. I will say however it is a tad on the expensive side, but the view is amazing and the area has a calming elegance to it. Also ate breakfast at the Elk House and the food was delicious. We had a window table and it felt great with the sun shining through while sipping their french press coffee. The ambience was satisfying and relaxing. Word of note, the cellular reception is essentially non-existent, so you will need to rely on their WiFi. read more

The bar was high. Sacred Rock Inn exceeded our expectations in every way. EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION During my first call to Sacred Rock Inn, I spoke with Daniel who was very pleasant, knowledgeable, thorough, and accommodating. After making a reservation we immediately received a confirmation and detailed navigation instructions, as some of the nearby roads were under construction. We received one or two additional clear, concise and pleasant emails as the time for our visit drew closer. EASY CHECK IN We arrived before check in time. The staff made sure our room was ready just minutes later. Tyler and Anna were warm and welcoming. Parking was right outside our door, and there was an electric charger for Tesla's. FIRST RATE ROOM AND AMENITIES Our room #243 was even more gorgeous than the photos on the website, and the view...well, in a word, spectacular! This was one of the cleanest rooms we've ever stayed in. Every window, floor and counter were spotless. No detail, no matter how small, was overlooked in their recent renovation. Even down to the grout between tiles in the bathroom, which was perfect, and the wood grains matched where they came together. Furniture was high end and comfortable. All of these details might not be noticed individually, but they created an impression of luxury, of being pampered. Of a staff who cared for your well being. Other amenities included a gas fireplace that put out a good amount of heat, a jetted deep soaking tub with a fabulous view, motorized blinds and skylight above the bed, and a private terrace with a million-dollar view. Oh, the sunsets we saw! The Coyuchi bed linens and towels were soft, and the bed was very comfortable. The kitchenette was stocked with premium products including individual packet Steeped coffee (better than Nespresso or Keurig), real cream in the refrigerator in a glass bottle, local cheese, Carr's crackers, chocolate chip cookies, dried fruits, mixed nuts, Acqua Panna spring water, Pellegrino sparkling water, sparkling fruit juices, and probably a few more items I've forgotten. Items were replenished each day. The gardens were lush and incredibly well tended. Lots of places to sit and relax. One evening we went for dinner at The Greenwood, the on-premises evening restaurant. Tom, the General Manager of Sacred Rock Inn, a very genial guy, greeted us by name. We had an excellent dinner of fresh, creatively combined ingredients, beautifully presented, expertly served by Dominic and Jenel, with a fabulous view. The same attention to detail in the rooms was applied to the restaurant. Even the tables were works of art with inlaid mother of pearl designs. ABOVE AND BEYOND As if all this was not enough, they surprised us with more than was expected. (1) They sent a bottle of champagne to celebrate our anniversary. (2) Since the Elk House restaurant (breakfast and lunch) is not open mid-week (typical for the area), they surprised us by delivering a yummy breakfast of yogurt and granola, fresh baked cinnamon bun, and fresh squeezed orange juice to our room late each afternoon so we could enjoy breakfast on the terrace the following morning. (3) Sacred Rock Inn was offering a special rate to celebrate the completion of their recent renovation. We were unaware of it. Imagine our surprise and delight when they applied a 30% discount to our final bill. This goes to the character of Tom the General Manager and the whole staff. They really want to make your stay enjoyable and exceed your expectations. Mission accomplished. Sacred Rock Inn has our highest recommendation. I did not stay here but ate at the restaurant and walked around the grounds of the property. The views are spectacular and the location is quite peaceful. The cottages we saw were cute and seemed to each have their own individual features. Being that Elk is a sleepy coastal town this would make for a perfect place to relax and recharge. Close to hiking, unobstructed views of the Pacific complete with the sound of the waves and not far from Mendocino. The restaurant felt a bit like we were at a bed and breakfast. Friendly staff, good food and a warm/inviting space. read more

This resort was absolutely breathtaking. Our room had such a great view of the ocean. It was so clean and our bathroom was gorgeous as well. Just everything about this place was amazing. The restaurants that's on site were delightful. Just as the staff were. They had everything you can possibly need. Also they even had EV chargers for your car as well. The staff is friendly and helpful. I have difficult dietary issues, the staff listened careful and respectfully and served me meals that were well prepared, tasty, and had nothing I could not eat. I live and work locally to Sacred Rock. I enjoy eating out, but having severe reactions to some commonly used ingredients I am careful where I eat and/or what I order when I first try a new or different restaurant. Many places have things on their menus that with little easy changes I can have. I started with one of those, and enjoyed it. Then wanting to become a "local regular" I ordered something that required a little more effort to get right, the staff got it perfect. I feel confident that I will be able to dine there without incident and only reminding them of my troubles, they will either modify offering for me or let me know if they cannot be modified. read more

We stopped here only for the night on a long road trip to Carmel from Oregon. What an absolutely spectacular oceanside sanctuary! This idyllic haven feels spiritual and definitely worthy of more than 1 night stay. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Michaela, we felt a wave a calm and rejuvenation. She's a wonderful host with such a welcoming presence. She walked us to our room (229) thru the gorgeous, lush gardens. The website doesn't remotely do justice to this property as they have renovated the rooms and the website doesn't reflect the updated photos. Our room & view was beyond our wildest expectations. The soft jazz playing on the tele as we entered truly set the mood. The complimentary snacks, drinks, etc were such a pleasant surprise. THE VIEW! We slept with the balcony door open to hear the ocean waves. Beautiful fireplace to cut the chill. Jacuzzi tub with the ocean view with cup of their fabulous hot tea was perfect after a long drive. Linens were luxurious. Bed was epically comfy. Shower was amazing. Wood detailing and decor is gorgeous. Their gardens!!! I have to share pictures of the beautiful flowers. Michaela was kind enough to give me a tour of the event space / multi bdrm residence rental they are renovating and it is absolutely stunning. I cannot recommend this Inn enough, it will forever reign as one of our all time favorites read more

This Inn was truly something special! We could see and hear the ocean and enjoyed the first rate, high end accommodations. It's in a romantic setting. We found this place for a quick weekend getaway (had never been to Elk) and it was the perfect romantic setting. We went up on St. Patrick's day weekend which was still a bit brisk outside, but made it cozy and warm with a fire inside.. a must have for a Northern California coast weekend. Pro tip: If you go on St. Patricks Day weekend, the restaurant may be closed at this hotel. We ended up swinging by the community St. Patrick's day potluck since pretty much everyone in town was there... and there wasn't anywhere else to go for dinner. Talk about a small town evening... full of families, live music, serve-yourself bar, and good old cheesy decorations. read more

This is a wonderful place to stay and we treasure each visit. Sacred Rock (formerly Griffin House) is a very special place to us. When we first started dating, I was feeling stressed and needing to get out. My girlfriend arranged a quick weekend getaway here to recharge and connect. It was just what I needed. We were so grateful they had an opening! These cottages have a Mom and Pop feel, are incredibly clean and have a feeling of privacy, plus you get your own parking spot! We always stay in the Smith Cottage which has an enclosed backyard area and clawfoot bathtub for an evening soak. It is so nice to sit outside on the patio surrounded by flowers where you can hear the birds, the ocean and watch the hummingbirds zoom by. One of the best places to sip on a glass of wine, it is a slice of heaven. Recently, we had a very special stay at Smith Cottage, we celebrated our anniversary. Ana was an incredible host and worked out the details with my girlfriend, bringing dessert to our room, having a beautiful flower arrangement that instantly caught the eye when you entered and arranging for a bottle of surprise champagne to arrive in the morning for mimosas. She accommodated our special dietary request as well for breakfast in the morning. After our breakfast was delivered we set everything up on the patio to enjoy, we had a dance in the patch of grass surrounded by flowers. Here the woman I love asked me to marry her and I got to say "yes". I could not have asked for a better place. The private patio allowed us to share our moment while being outside in nature. The attention to detail and accommodation from Ana and the service from the entire staff added to this special and memorable weekend. Thank you! read more

Passing through Elk we gave the Greenwood restaurant a try. I have to say the food was good to the pallete, but for the price of $32 for 5 Small Shrimp Ravioli's was a bit much. There wasn't even a side of vegetables to justify the amount of food for the cost of it. It was more of an appetizer. I would of hated to order the meat plates, seeing only a slice might of made me upset. I think if you are going to charge those prices, add a little more food to the plates. You may have more people attending on the weekends, if they knew they were going to get a great meal for the the price you are charging. The staff was great! Just a suggestion! read more

Under new management, Sacred Rock has reopened in a spectacular way! It is an unbelievably beautiful, peaceful place to stay. From the amazing yoga class in the morning to the beautiful sunset, the stay was beyond memorable. Greenwood restaurant (on the property) has a new chef, Ryan Seal. We shared the soup, salad, and charcuterie before sharing the mushroom risotto and New York steak. These were delicious, but the duck with pistachio risotto and the parsnip ravioli were creative and unbelievably delicious! The dessert of "caramel apple" with cream cheese ice cream and peanut butter mouse in a bed of peanut brittle and chocolate crumble were also a highlight! Awesome views and amazing accommodations since they've begun remodeling and revitalizing the resort. There are new owners who have put a TON of effort into the location. The views out your windows of the bay are truly breathtaking, and you may even see dolphins or whales in there at the right times of the year. The service was great, and was even able to customize the breakfast service for my Vegan wife. I got eggs and home fries, she got an extra portion of potatoes and extra fruit. Overall, An excellent location to use while exploring the coast, and I'd recommend it for a special occasion like an anniversary or proposal. You couldn't experience a more incredible view from these 3 cliff top cottages. This cove that these rooms face is one of the most majestic and show of powerful headlands, as beautiful as Big Sur. It is one of the best hideaway (no one will know where the heck you are) romantic spots ever. Much attention is given to detail the moment you walk in. It's not really a resort per say but a quant cozy cottage destination. I really want to go back and appreciate the whole ELK area and especially go back up to the BEACON Light hilltop bar and spend more time with R.D. If you go up and decide this place may not be your cup of tea, the view is worth the jaunt up the hill, but it sure is memory to say a hello to R.D. There are seven accommodations at this place but I would truly recommend that you plan ahead and secure one of the three with the ocean view. I never really plan much on my travels but this would be an exception for me. Many little treats and surprises await you as well as request granted with a smile. At time of arrival, a bottle of local wine is offered. Ask for their some yummy bread and butter if you have an empty stomach. The rooms are CLEAN and the linens are crisp. Nothing is overlooked. A generous basket of snacks, a coffee machine (including pods at the ready), sparkling wine glasses and opener, robes, the fridge, water, NO carpet, games, books...etc. The innkeeper makes you feel as though you have been visiting for years. The restaurant is cozy. I had fish-chips. I do have to say that I had better but...oh well. Would eat there again gladly. Allow yourself days to soak up all the beauty and splendor of this land. No cell phone service here..yeah. I am not sure if there is Wi-Fi. Don't forget to leave a handsome tip. The room mistresses well deserve it. They are there for any needs and are so sweet. read more

Read this and you will not stay anywhere else in this area again!!! We absolutely loved staying here. We arrived late friday night 7/14/17 after originally only booked for saturday. The office was closed but a personalized letter was waiting for us with instructions to get into our cottage. Yay no hassle of checking in we just showed up and went to bed! Although we did want to meet the gentleman with the heavy accent who helped us over the phone, he was awesome! We stayed in the Fernier room i think it was named. We loved the room. Great decor, all the furniture was comfortable and inviting. It gave you the feeling of being at home all the while but knowing you're away and in for a great weekend. The vintage looking fireplace was an awesome touch. It worked well and with the sounds of the ocean in the background gave you a sense of tranquility. Both mornings room service brought our complementary breakfast and I must say the thick fresh grilled ham was absolutely amazing easily the best either of us has ever had! Breakfast each morning was served with apple juice and coffee. Also they provided coffee and hot teas in the room plus an assortment of snacks, which I loved because I love snacks! All that was on top of a complementary split bottle of champagne! Who does that? Sacred Rock does! We also found a variety of board games to play like Monopoly and Yahtzee among others. We even noticed they had a journal for guests to write in and share their expiriences and who they are or whatever they feel like sharing. That was the one of the best touches I've seen at any place I have stayed. Although we completely forgot to log an entry, still kind of bummed about it. Also there were books about the area and it's history even a guide on things to do in the area. Most people kick those aside but we actually found stuff in there that was interesting and did some of them. We did eat at the restaurant saturday night. I got the Chicken pot pie and she got the Shrimp alfredo. Both were very delicious and our server was fantastic. There were only two negatives we had which didn't really bother us. One was i needed an iron saturday but decided i can live without it. And two, I'm assuming this cottage is one half a larger cottage usually used for families since it shared a wall. The rooms have two doors between them that face each other. That can be locked. However both locks faced the other cottage so we essentially couldnt lock our room. Would have brought it to their attention but the other cottage was not occupied so we forgot about it. I do want to mention everything worked very well. New bed, great lighting and most importantly hot water with great water pressure in the shower. Took a very long shower and never ran out of hot water. Sacred Rock spent a lot of time thinking about what brings guests back and what makes a memorable stay for travelers and those seeking a weekend getaway. Next time I will spend a few bucks more and reserve the ocean view rooms. read more
