I like Coffee Talk. Because my writers' group meets here twice a week, I feel comfortable writing a review. So here goes - fasten your seatbelts.
Kudos for a cool interior. Artsy posters adorn the walls. The building once housed a bank, and what do you do with the old vault? Rip off the door and make a great little meeting room, of course. They even left exposed the ferro-cement walls complete with dangling iron re-bars for your viewing pleasure. Tacky to some, but not in my book. (Tasteful is so boring, dahling!). I'm adding style points here.
Staff? Well, I've only seen two - a wahine and a guy with glasses. They are both really, really nice. How nice? Well, when I asked for square of banana bread the young woman offered me a choice between a corner piece and one in the middle. Everybody knows the corner pieces are the bestest. She could've saved these for herself and the guy with glasses, but she didn't. Bless her heart. I'm awarding credit here. You got a problem with that?
And the guy with glasses? Major league all the way. One evening he gave our group a plate of ham and cheese croissants just before closing time. Now, how nice is that? I mean he and the wahine could have split them for themselves, but he chooses to treat our little group instead. The ham and cheese will be long remembered. Granted, we have yet to see additional acts of charity, so guy with glasses if you are reading my review, please take this as a big hint!
So how's the rest of the food? Delish in most cases. Muffins, breads, scones, cookies all do what muffins and scones are meant to do - put a big smile on your face and force you to eat every last crumb on the plate. Lots of quality points here.
There is one sticky problem I must mention. The pastrami and cheese melt was greasy. Buy hey! What do you expect? These things always have more oil than Arabia, and you shouldn't be eating them anyway. Try the tuna and avocado - it tastes so good you won't even know it's healthy.
All right .. what's next? Seating .. it comes and goes! Maybe room for 30. One long table in the vault plus lots small tables scattered around the rest of the shop. Management has no problem with customers pushing chairs and tables about.
But there's a problem with the lack of abundant electric outlets, so come fully charged. (Your computer, not you). Because it's an old building this will not change. But look at it this way. If you stay here long enough to discharge your computer, you should get some fresh air least people think you're a nerd, right? Anyway, I can live with it. Hopefully you can too, or else you will miss out on this fun little coffee shop.
Seat availability? Depends on the time of day. This place can get crowded, but I've never seen it completely filled. In the late afternoon it's popular with students. (Honestly, these kids look too young to even drink coffee, but maybe this is because they have drunk so much already it's stunted their growth. I hope this hasn't happened to you.)
Bathrooms! Coffee drinkers need them so let's get on with it. Men's first. Ok, the toilet and sink are clean in the men's depository, and I've thought twice about making a visit. But there are demerits here. First, the obscenities scratched on mirror. They are misspelled! I'm sure the authors hale from "too young to drink" set outside. Either this is a sad commentary on the state of modern education, or maybe the kids have had a few too many lattes. I just have one word to say here. Spellcheck!
And one other demerit. The floor. It's grimy. Not disgusting. Not foul. It just needs moping more often. Perhaps it's due to the construction work outside, but for whatever reason, the floor here needs more attention.
Now for the wahines' clubhouse... no problems here... at least in my abbreviated view. It's clean, floor and all. No obscenities, and if there were any I am sure the spelling would pass muster. (I can see what you're thinking! How do I know about the WWC - women's water closet? Because when the men's side is closed for "cleaning", I ventured across enemy lines. Rest assured... I knock before entering. Well, maybe it's a quiet knock, but I do knock, honest I do.)
So shall we sum it up? Coffee? You want to hear about coffee? Well, to be honest, it's only average. It does the job, but it's not great. Were it so, I'd award another star. As for parking, there's a metered lot behind the building and a "take-a-ticket" lot across the street on 12th (which is best if you're not sure how long you're staying). The food is good, the staff friendly and the ambience great. And isn't this what you want in a coffee shop? So if you're in the area, give it a try. And if you are not, then take a special trip uptown to Kaimuki and pay Coffee Talk a visit. You'll be glad you did. read more
