Don't want to sound like a sushi-snob, but after eating sushi at 5:00 a.m. and experiencing the famous and largest wholesale fish market of the world - Tsukiji Fish Market - Tokyo - it's incomparable now when eating sushi elsewhere!
It's amazing with technology advances that we can enjoy most any kinds of food year round.
HOWEVER, I still love it when I get can get sushi whenever I'm craving good food! SO, thanks Kevin Goldsmith for having this "sushi" option restaurant in Augusta, GA! I give credit to anyone for taste, presentation, service and ambiance when due.
I actually liked the idea of fusion style of mex-asian... Mexican one side of the menu and Asian on the other... FUN!
Since I was being treated by a family of the faint of heart to raw fish (they ordered mostly) , Takosushi is the perfect place for anyone to experience eating "sushi-style" foods... lots of cooked seafood... I'm quite impressed with the variety of sushi rolls with cooked meats offered!
The flash frying and tempura is just so perfect for the south!
Here were our dishes:
Southwest Tuna Tartare - my only raw dish (does it really count when the lime juice cooks it!) YEA... so good and spicy!
Tempura asparagus - with Ponzu and a special Takosushi sauce(white sauce of some kind)
Fried oyster sushi (special) - good and sweet
Ika Sansia - seasoned roasted Squid w/ mushrooms/ponzu / and red chilies - delicious flavor...and tender chewy!
California Roll - well, my unadventurous family members (which includes an 8 year old) RAVED over this roll! (I myself am not a fan of fake crab.)
Spider Roll - The "largest" fried soft-shell crab I've ever experienced and so crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and delicious!
Crazy Roll (Kevin Roll) - Tempura Shrimp, shrimp and crab (i think the pollack) - okay.
Pyramid Roll - tuna, snapper, crab (flash fried roll) - liked the sriracha sauce on this one - good.
Mixed Greens - $15.95 on the menu - I thought this was a little pricey for the size of this salad...since we just ate a very med. size plate of greens/veggies... hmmm.. maybe there's a separate price for a smaller plate without any meats (I should have requested the add-on sushi for $1 on the side) - but fresh and good with the ponzu dressing...not sure how just a small salad is priced.
Overall, the food was tasty... so, I probably would try again (on my own) and order more
raw rolls and sushi next time to get a feeling for other flavors! My group went overboard for me on cooked fish, tempura and flash frying.
The SPACE is small (so we were warned of our party of 7 that we only had 1 1/2 hour to eat, but nearing 9... the place wasn't standing room anymore.) No problem... I can't imagine squeezing any party of 8 or more... but I'm sure they must make-do!... oh, there's always the Sushi bar if room is available, that's always fun!
SAKE - I've learned during my 13 year travels in Japan, that drinking good chilled sake is the way to go... the idea is that the warmth of your mouth brings out the flavor of the sake, and if one were to heat their sake, then this heats off most of the flavor... just a difference of preference. However, I tried the NIGORI Sake (served chilled) a little milky color - Delicious... it has a "refreshing fruity flavor" that lingers on the pallet. NICE!
SERVICE - loved our "gal" server, very attentive, friendly, and helpful. No complaints on this one...but we're not a FUSSY group!
Thanks Kevin... nice to have trendy, chic boutique restaurants like this in Augusta! read more
