I love this place, so much that I'll drive up from Seattle and go out my way to eat here haha! Will travel for good food is my motto. The monthly special sushi roll we tried was so good. And all their bentos, whatever combinations (And there are many to choose from) you cannot go wrong with. They have an extensive menu in hot food choices, rolls, nigiri, sashimi etc. The restaurant itself is small but I've never had to wait that long. There is also a separate ramen place next door that I have yet to try but they share the same kitchen. So whatever Japanese food you're in the mood for, it's all conveniently located. Takeya sushi Went to celebrate my sister getting her N on her first try!l The prices are more on the pricy end for the rolls and quality. Service was nice and fast. Aburi salmon batter 9/10 $14.75 Delicious roll. The torched salmon melted with the house sauce and worked well with the firm rice. Seafood aburi roll 9/10 $15.95 If you're indecisive about the aburi roll you want to get this is the roll to get. Unlike the salmon aburi roll it didn't have the house sauce which made the roll seem more on the dryer side Chicken karrage bento 8.5/10 (not sure what the dinner bento price was but I recall it being pricer than usual places) Definitely more on the pricy side for a bento. All the items in the box were delicious but the overall bento was quite expensive. My dad and I particularly enjoyed the refreshing cucumbers in vinegar. Tempura was excellently fried but nothing special. They had green bean tempura which some places don't have. Karrage was nice and juicy but didn't have the most flavour. It was fried well. Beef teriyaki bento box 8.5/10 (not sure what the dinner bento price was but I recall it being pricer than usual places) I personally prefer chicken teriyaki beef teriyaki but the beef teriyaki was done well. A regular portion with just the right amount of sauce. Prawn tempura 9/10 (7 pc) $12.95 The prawns were delicious and regular sized. The batter is your regular batter but fried well. It was packed with flavour. I loved the flavour because it was rich and deep. The curry itself is thick and pairs well with udon. the sauce is heavy so it's a little bit tedious to eat. It does take a while to eat because it has such high viscosity. It was definitely on the pricer side with protein and I think it's perfectly fine without it! Chicken teriyaki 6.5/10 ~$9 It's not traditional chicken teriyaki and it was quite pricy for the small portion you get. It's more like chicken with teriyaki sauce. I personally think of chicken teriyaki as a fried crispy exterior on the outside with a tender interior. Homey, authentic Japanese restaurant in Richmond, well, one of the few that's all the way at Steveston at least. Found this little gem on Yelp on A Thursday night. Restaurant about 80% full on a weekday night at 7:30. I had the Ten Don and Udon Combo. Tempera came out piping hot and the batter was perfect. They also have a front desk to make getting take out easier. Tasty, authentic Japanese food. Service was great. Attentive and polite. Will definitely come back to try their curry, sukiyaki, and sushi. Prices are okay, slightly more expensive than your average "cheap sushi" joints, but totally worth it for better quality and a clean restaurant. Also lots of parking at Seafair Mall which is a huge plus for Richmond. read more

I didn't expect much from this place but their oishi sushi is pretty darn good. I had one of each and I'd have to say my favourite is the salmon and the tuna comes to a close second. The Ebi with avo doesn't mix very well and is tied with the vegetarian version. I also had their tempura soba and that was not bad. The tempura wasn't greasy and had a nice crunch to it. Not overly battered either. Takoyaki is pretty good. It had the right amount of sauce and the softness was good with tiny bits of tako inside. I'd return to this place if I'm in the area. If my stomach were a bottomless pit in need of good quality food with fair prices, this is where I'd set up my tent to eat all day. I enjoy eating in and take out. For eating in, there's several nicely spaced out tables (good for groups up to 4-5) and green tea is served freely. Also, the staff are super friendly, efficient and attentive. Take out is great because things are packed up nicely and I appreciate that they put the ginger and wasabi in little paper cups, that way it doesn't contaminate my food (aka: I don't like wasabi). Takeya Sushi can satisfy the cravings from the most Basic (teriyaki don, California roll, tempura, udon) to Intermediate (sashimi, chirashi don, Yaki udon, eggplant roll, takoyaki) to Unique (Kaki fry, Salmon pon, toro salmon, takoyaki roll, fish cake tempura). The list goes on but I think I should stop before I get the urge to go out again. Overall, I haven't tasted anything bad at this location (knock on wood). Japanese craving? You'll find me here with my new favourite of Bara Chirashi Don ($7.95) and yet another new dish to devour - maybe their tako agedashi tofu! I got this place delivered to my hotel and I was very happy with the quality. For those of you visiting and used to American style sushi rolls you won't find that here. This are light and fresh rolls that only use the traditional Japanese sushi elements. No frills. I think while a bit more expensive than some spots in the area given the freshness and quality it was still a great value. I would absolutely order from here again in the future. Wonderful sushi- decent prices. Just took off a star because the atmosphere isn't so great (I guess it's what you would expect of strip mall sushi). Had a California roll (delicious) and some nigiri. The fish was fresh, the rice tasted great and in the right proportions. I thought the crab sunomono was a bit over priced considering they use such a small amount processed imitation crab. They also had lots of fusion rolls, like mango California. I will be coming back here for sure. read more

Very decent for its pricing within the area! Friendly service in this small cozy restaurant. As a very picky sushi eater, I wouldn't mind coming back to this little spot! Obviously cannot expect over the top quality with such pricing (average 12-20 dollars for lunch); however, I have had a long of disappointing experience trying neighbour-hood type sushi restaurants. Worth checking this place out! Fish was quite fresh and restaurant was accommodating with my MSG-free and gluten-free requests. While I was in Canada this summer, I got take out from Takeya Sushi not once, but TWICE, because I loved it so much! As someone who is half Japanese, I know authentic Japanese food and Takeya Sushi has it. Their katsu don portion size is HUGE, delicious and filling. I was so happy with my meals here. Granted, this doesn't mean that Takeya serves unsatisfactory sushi.... however, there are just many other places I would list off as having spectacular quality and choices of sushi! If you are in the area and are wanting sushi, definitely come here... however if you are hoping to introduce a friend to sushi for the first time or want to blow someone's mind when it comes to off-the-hook sushi, this probably isn't the place I would choose as a first choice. Was here with family for dinner , ordered the bento box with mackerel and it was incredible , brought me those food moments from Tokyo , the fish was moist and juicy . My wife and daughter ordered the bento with chicken and sashimi . Everything was so good , being a restauranteur myself 17 years in the biz , the service is A1 and lots of love and care is taken in preparation of the meals . My favorite dish is the chicken bento box with a side of gomae. And I absolutely love their tea! How about long standing restaurants? These may be proven jewels just waiting for you to give it a try! We recently went to a neighbourhood Japanese restaurant, Takeya Sushi. What a wonderful experience! Located within a suburb mall, this place boasts some pretty neat offerings. If you are a fan of curry, their sweet Japanese curry is a must try on your list of first tries considering that they also advertise it on their menu! We ordered a unagi-udon combo, tobiko scallop roll, Queen dynamite roll and a Takeya agedashi tofu. Highlight goes to the Takeya agedashi tofu. With the restaurant putting their name to the dish, it is another indicator of a must try! The tofu is rolled in with crab meat, tuna and spinach, wrapped around with seaweed and altogether deep fried to perfection. Paired with tempura dipping ssauce, you are simply blown away after one bite. The tuna is fresh and works in conjunction with the tofu to bring out subtle umami flavours while the crab meat and seafood ties it together with the saltiness of the ocean. This place is a try for when you're around Richmond and thinking of what to eat. read more

If Takeya was closer, I'd never leave. This place is a great go to place for sushi and their sashimi is always fresh and delicious. The prices here are also super affordable. They recently just renovated and I love the new space - very "bamboo" inspired. It's also a lot more open (they got rid of the strange walk way to the cash register) and have relocated where the take out orders happen near the front. Much more efficient for sure. Everything that I've tried here thus far has been great and the service is always top notch. On my last visit, I ended up getting their Japanese curry which comes to around 12 dollars a plate. The portion size is pretty huge and I ended up not even finishing some of my rice (which usually NEVER happens). They also give you a generous amount of katsu chicken (4 whole pieces). My only complaint here is that it is a bit too sweet for my liking and the curry itself is pretty standard. Aside from that though, pretty decent deal. read more

It's been many years since my last review here, though I've been here dozens of times since. Though it may be hard to believe, I think the food here has gotten BETTER over the years. Just had a meal here after spending an extended period away from the city and what a treat it was to have REALLY good Japanese food. The technique they use in briefly searing the nigiri pieces over charcoal is brilliant. But the real genius is the rice; they are experts at having the correct amount of vinegar and texture here, which is not always that easy to find. The staff are always pleasant and efficient. Overall, when factoring in the price, quality and convenience of the food here, I really think it's one of the best restaurants in the city. read more

Unassuming strip mall location of quite a lovely sushi place!! I judge sushi venues on a few things - gomae, tuna quality and spicy sauce (I know, I know, true sushi lovers scoff at the latter - but I can't help it, spicy is just so good). Takeya faired very well in all three departments, with my only comment being that the toro was a touch squishier than I'd prefer. Overall though - the sashimi was very fresh, and the offer of some alternative vegetarian rolls (like eggplant!) was a pleasent surprise. They are accommodating of larger groups (they happily pulled together 3 tables for us) - just make sure you come early to secure a spot, otherwise you'll be waiting a while (we arrived at 11:45 on a Sunday for lunch and we got space for 6, but only 10 minutes later the place had a line up). On that note though - if you arrive and there's a wait - it's worth picking up a magazine from outside and passing the time. Takeya Sushi is located next to Safeway inside a strip mall on No 1 Road between Francis and Blundell Road. This is the express sister restaurant to Steveston iconic Ichiro. Takeya offers take-out, counter seats for a fast and convenient enjoyment of sushi and bento boxes. The décor is humble and there isn't a lot of flash. The prices are extremely reasonable, yet the ingredients and the quality is first class. The Takeya Chirashi Don 12.75 This is the special chirashi don compared to the regular one for $8.95. This one includes some incredibly fresh uni (sea urchin) along with salmon, tuna, ikura, chopped imitation crab and scallop, hokigai, saba mackerel and of course tamago. This generous portion is filling but it doesn't leave me feeling the burn in my wallet long after I return to the office. If you are ever in the area and also which to dine for one or perhaps bring a date, this is a fine choice. This is, by far, my favourite sushi place in town. I always order takeout, and now that they are open until 10pm for the summer, I will be eating here even more often. They have some chef specials on their regular menu and so far they have always been amazing. Their crispy tuna roll is the best you'll ever have! Their rolls are mostly more traditiona l and standard than the 'fancy' giant rolls that some other sushi places offer, and it's always perfectly packed to-go. Their prices are reasonable and their staff are always helpful and patient. In addition to sushi, I often get the gyoza curry dish, the kakiage chicken (always so crispy!), the chicken teri don (delicious) and standard sides like edamame, agedashi tofu, and gomaae.
