Very busy little place inside a strip mall. A lot of people come here for take out but the place was full of those sitting down for a meal too. Food is average, but service is pretty good despite how busy they are. The waitresses always had smiles on their faces and never rush you. We had the toro sashimi- the pieces were not very thick, but still tasted ok Bento- lots of selections and came with a good variety of dishes- highly recommend! Udon/Unagi bowl- the udon was over cooked and the soup tasted like it came from a package. There was only 3 pieces of thin unagi on top of the rice. Quality here is top notch ! You know the sashimi is fresh when the salmon has a sweet aftertaste. Love their bc dynamite roll as well as their salmon Kama (get the sweet miso!). Their sashimi is always fresh and this is a legitimate Traditional Japanese joint. They're definitely best known for doing take out as they're only a small little restaurant. My grandma comes here every Thursday to have her salmon and her California rolls. Funny, for an old Japanese lady, she doesn't eat sashimi and very little sushi. Especially since her husband was a fisherman. But she eats every thing else, just not raw fish. At Takeya, the staff knows her well and we always feel welcome. Today our server Angela did an awesome job. Friendly efficient service. It's always nice to dine at a place where the staff is genuinely happy about what they do. So the rule of thumb here is to avoid most of the raw stuff. The assorted sashimi I had was overpriced and underwhelming. I could taste the stale ice crystals in the tako and the surf clams. Not a good sign. On the other hand, the bara chiraishi sushi (chopped sashimi rice bowl) was excellent and easily one of the best and well priced ($8.45) in the city. Takeya Sushi is getting better since their big renovation. It's not the best sushi restaurant in Richmond but their food is decent. The prices are good and the portion sizes are not bad either. However some of their food has let me down. Their sunomono is crunchy and tasteless. Their basic rolls can be poorly put together. Yet their more complex rolls, their bigger rolls are much better. Dynamite roll and Futomake rolls are very nice and they also serve Inari Nagiri (sweet tofu pocket with rice inside) which some other sushi restaurants do not. I've gotten takeout from Takeya several times now and it's always just ok. Not terrible, but not great. Ingredients like avocado and tamago aren't the best. If it were ultra cheap sushi, I'd still be satisfied, but Takeya's prices are average to high, and their portions are quite small. I can pay the same price for amazing takeout sushi at other places in Richmond, so won't be going back to Takeya. read more

Review is for their sushi. There was a price increase the last time I visited on Aug 24, 2018. I think generally there was about $1 increase on most items. The 6pc tuna sashimi was increased by 4 dollars. At that price point it is very poor quality at that price. It was in between being cold and room temperature so the fish was super watery on the plate it arrived on. Small or average sized pieces of tuna. Texture was decent, but watery. Did not taste fresh. At 8 dollars, it would be decent, at 12, it is no good. Takeya's rolls are really well made, but lack any creativity. Takeya stays at 3 stars because of its large Japanese menu. Their new menu also has small images to notify the patrons of presence of gluten, dairy, etc. I wish their curry was not beef based. read more

The quality of the food is the best. I like the seafood salad and the Takeya Zuke. Sashimi with a twist! I'm looking forward to trying more. We Found that in Vancouver coastal health website that this place was actually commented as "CRITICAL INFRACTION RELATED TO FOOD BEING HANDLED IN A SANITARY MANNER" and "EMPLOYEES ARE NOT WASHING THEIR HANDS TO AVOID FOOD CONTAMINATION"- basically their kitchen is really very dirty!!! We always come here for Bento because we think the taste of food is above average in the lower mainland and quite authentic. Two days ago, we tried their sashimi and nigiri sushi namely salmon and tuna sashimi, seared tuna toro nigiri sushi, whole scallop nigiri sushi; also we tried the plain udon noodle soup, fried chicken Bento, and caramel custard dessert. We felt a bit weird in seeing the appearance of the sashimi but since we have come here many times for their bento, we trust them with no doubt and ate them all. After 1 hour, my stomach already started to feel quizzy. I was on my way home. I lost a lot of fluid that night in multiple times. I told my husband and he did a research online. read more

Quaint, polite, delicious - a pleasant meal modestly priced and professionally prepared and served

I have been purchasing party platters of sushi from Takeya for quite some time now. Normally, I have never had any difficulties, the order is what I asked for and it is ready for pick up on time. Today, when I arrived to pick up my party platter order, I discovered that instead of making one tray as I requested they made two identical trays. When I informed the server about the apparent error she then became argumentative to the point of being sarcastic and rude. After several minutes of what clearly was a no win situation I told her I was walking out. As I was leaving I heard her say that I was "so stupid". it is indeed RARE in my experience to encounter such disrespectful and obnoxiously rude counter/serving staff. I was stunned to say the least I went just a short distance to Sushi Han where the order was correct the first time and the staff were very polite and friendly. Sushi Han now has all of my business. I will NEVER return to Takeya ever again and given the language barrier and the serving staff's default position of rudeness I would NEVER recommend placing a phone order for pick up with this establishment - EVER. read more

Just had lunch there with a friend. Both first timers. Prices are pretty good and portion sizes are decent. Service was friendly and prompt. Came to take our order quickly and the sushi came at a good pace given they were super busy over the lunch hour. Everything we ate was delicious and they have a huge menu with many interesting choices. Not much in the way of decor, but clean and casual. This little joint puts places like over-rated sushi restaurants Nobu and Sushi Samba to shame! This place offers take out and eat in. They have an eclectic sushi menu and offers anything from hot udon soup to edamame. Great place for a quick bite, but because the place is really small, I don't recommend bringing a big group here. read more

Used to come here regularly but was served some rotten sushi. Advised the waitress that the sushi had turned and the sushi chef came out to argue with me about it. Very rude and they did not adjust the bill to reflect the sushi that we did not eat for fear of food poisoning. But this was a good thing we never came back and found two sushi places that are much better quality. I love the menu selection this place offers. I'm an extremely picky eater and I don't eat anything raw, and I don't like salmon, tuna, oysters... Even with such standards, I still had quite a few items to choose from. It also has nice little twists to the common sushi rolls we always see. Obviously, I haven't tried everything on the menu, but the ones I have tried are pretty good. The food is not over-priced and the service is great. I only wish the place were a little bit bigger because eating in groups of more than 4 or 5 may be a bad idea here. read more

Pretty good food and very good prices. Great for take out. My one issue is that they can sometimes be really busy during the lunch rush so it may take a little while to get a table. After the first time, I brought my family here once and came back here with my partner on 2 separate occassions. I'm not sure if I got bad days twice but I feel like the quality has declined from my very first visit. Service was alright, I'll give that 3/5. Lots of selection, as with many other places. Finally came back after they finished their renovations. Although this place may be small, the quality and taste of the food here is just excellent. Their bento boxes are very well prepared and their sushi and sashimi are freshly prepared. I haven't tried everything yet but I can say that nothing has disappointed me. You can also call in advance to place an order for take out and then pick up at their location, which helps to save some time. Keep in mind that it does get busy past 5 pm. Overall, I'd highly recommend for anyone who loves or is interested in trying Japanese cuisine. read more
