Unfortunately this will be my last time getting my cakes from here. New owners and service has gone down along with the cleanliness of the bakery. Cakes are left out on the counter, crumbs all over the displays, fly's flying around the store and display, signs unorganized that display which desserts are which. I had to tell the girl to wash her hands before she wrote on my cake. And all this after being told to wait while there was nobody there but she seemed to have been finishing up a conversation with workers in the back. Last year, I ordered my sister-in-law's 40th birthday cake from here. It was the carrot cake, and it was very good - delicious, moist, great size. At that time, I also ordered a few different cupcake flavors for my family to try out. I was not impressed with the cupcakes. They were dry, icing was thick and too sweet, and just overall disappointing. This week, I was in the area and decided to stop in and get a few slices of cake. I got 2 of the chocolate italian cream slices and 1 slice of oreo cheesecake. The service was good, but when I got home I realized that when she cut the cheesecake, she somehow did not cut the bottom half of my slice, resulting in 3/5 of a slice rather than an entire slice. I normally wouldn't care if it wasn't for the high price tag for a slice. For 3 slices of cake, it was around $20. The oreo cheesecake was very good though. The different flavors of the chocolate mousse and the cream cheese along with the oreos all came together nicely. Unfortunately that was not the case for the chocolate italian cream cake. I took the last 2 slices that were in the display, so I'm not sure if it just wasn't fresh. It was super dry and tasted more like a German chocolate cake than italian cream. Overall, I probably will not return to this store. For the price, I think there are much better quality bakeries in Houston. read more

After visiting TTC's store front on 3 separate occasions and having a specialty cake made for my employer, I'm finally ready to give my view on what I've tried to date. Honestly, I've yet to experience the wow factor these 5 star reviewers have. I've never had an issue with customer service. It did take me a while to actually try their cakes. The main reason is a lot of the cakes on display were either chocolate or contained coconut. I despise coconut in desserts and only like chocolate every blue moon...not a fan of bananas so their hummingbird big seller is definitely not for me. I've tried the oreo cheesecake, lemon cheesecake, red velvet cupcake, and a specialty cake prepared for work which was a vanilla cake with raspberry filling. The cake was nothing spectacular to look at, I've seen better looking cakes on Yelp! from them so that's probably more the fault of the admin who ordered it vs. TTC. I wasn't a fan of the filling though apparently it's the most popular one? The texture of the cake was crumbly. He could barely slice it without it falling apart. This place rocks! My family and I have frequented Take the Cake several times over the past few years and have loved everything we've had from here. I had my little brother's first birthday cake made here and they absolutely nailed it. The reference picture I gave them used fondant and they were able to replicate the cake using buttercream perfectly. They were very accommodating and used some figurines I brought in from home.
