It all started when I bought frozen Samosas from Aldi. They were good but I realized I had never tasted authentic Indian food before. I then remembered that Taj was right up the street from us (my husband picks up door dash orders from here) and decided to go with my sister in law who had already ate here a few times. We ordered SO much and now I have fallen completely in love with Indian food. I had the Goan Shrimp Curry as my main and it was TO DIE FOR. We also both had a Mango Lassi and it went amazingly with the spicy food. We even brought back my husband a bite of everything to try and of course he loved it to. I can't wait for this to become our new date night spot. Every singe thing I put it my mouth was delicious! The servers all had a big smile as well. 10/10 read more

Taj is a nice little cozy restaurant in the Highlands area in a little strip. Their prices are fair and their portions are generous. Go if you're feeling hungry! The service is pretty good and they'll give you recommendations that'll definitely satisfy. Most of the time I stick to my vegetable biryani and ask for extra spice - but then I don't get raisins, so I'll have to remember to ask for that next time. Their naan isn't standard at dinner. Instead you get a hard and spicy Indian bread cracker (roti?) which is pretty good but I prefer their plain naan. I need to return for their buffet. Had good experiences at Taj, what happened today was particularly shocking. I was taking a disabled friend (recent amputee) around for some errands, and we decided to stop in for lunch. Although we arrived in the parking lot shortly before 2pm (lunch closing time), by the time we parked and my friend struggled to get out of the car, in full view of the hostess/greeter inside, who watched our arrival and approach, when we got to the door, she informed us "sorry, we are closed", and turned off the 'open' sign, right in our faces. It could not have been more than 2:01. And her body language and facial expression did not at all convey sorrow, nor empathy. The impression was that it was deliberate. There was still food at the buffet. There were several other customers still in the middle of their meals. And she witnessed the effort that went into my friend struggling to even come to their front door. I, for one, will never inconvenience them in such a manner ever, ever again, by showing up. The Taj I grew fond of at the Highlands location is, for me, gone forever. There are plenty of other places in town where I will not have to witness my friends, or myself, be treated in such an un-hospitable, callous manner. read more

As the Fri. evening crush lessened and the waiters had time to breathe, I received my lamb vindaloo with white basmati rice. The chef must have been inspired, even as the evening crawled onward. The spices were perfect, the lamb tender, and the potatoes done perfectly. The garlic naan, smothered in butter, came early to appease famished grandkids, and was replenished for the adults. The steaming hot Tandoori chicken, straight from the oven, was a big hit as well. Tonight's repast was 5 stars. I will be back to sample more of the menu. read more

I recently have been wanting to try new places in Birmingham. So, me and my roommates went to this place a week ago and really enjoyed the visit. Me and my roommates tried the Chicken Tikka and it was amazing. Not only was the chicken really tender and juicy, but the beans and sides were also amazing. The staff was also great as well, they recommended some great options on the menu and also the item that I ate there. Another thing I enjoyed about this place was the presentation of the food. It was a great experience as a whole, and I will definitely be back. I didn't ask about the COVID-19 restrictions, but they seem to be like a lot of places I go to that give people the chance to wear the mask or not. read more

Went here after many years with my husband and a group of friends. We thoroughly enjoyed the service and also the food. The menu was pretty lengthy but not difficult to read. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and the shrimp korma. Both fabulous, however, we did end up ordering another order of rice because it wasn't enough for us. Our friends ordered the chefs special for two people and Wow was it huge! Lots of food and a good assortment of food as well. The water was in nice copper cups that kept your water nice and chill. Well, this place has been here at the Highlands location for a long time. My son, Tulley loves to try new things and just begged me to take him. We live in Helena and I was just not enamored with the thoughts of driving to Birmingham to eat Indian food. I think I have visited the buffet before, many years ago and I remember liking it. This trip has me making plans to get back asap. Due to covid, there is obviously no buffet, so the resteraunt offers lunches that include several different options, and on one plate. This food is off the hook, killer, as Guy Fieri would say. Can we just throw this out there (?)... "Comforting Indian soul cuisine" Look, if you have not been in a while, just go. Wow. This place impressed me. The lunch buffet was excellent. Lots of variety with various levels of spice. I appreciated the fact that some dishes really had a decent amount of kick to them, more so than many Indian buffets I have been to. Fresh naan also came out for us. It wasn't sitting in the buffet for hours, and it was included in the meal. A coworker informed me that the food here seemed to be a notch above Bayleaf's. I easily confirmed this to be true, based on a comparison of the buffets. Best part about it all? Not the food, but the price - total was $9.30 including tax (no tip and water to drink)! They had a buffet for lunch. We normally avoid those during covid, but they required masks, which is a good thing in general (less slobber on the shared food). One older couple did not wear masks though (even though they discussed "patients"). Aside from that, the food was good, decent variety. Spiced well but not too hot. I agree with another Yelper that the food is too spicy. I've only tried this place once. Maybe it was the cook working that night that made everything spicy. I don't know. We asked for every dish to be mild. We ordered 5 dishes and they were all very spicy. I like spicy food, but my poor family couldn't eat any of it. What a waste. We all love Indian food and have never experienced anything like this in the 50+ Indian restaurants that we've visited in multiple states as well as outside the U.S. Such a shame. A couple of the dishes, tika masala and korma tasted nothing like we've had before. Maybe the cook was sick and a server filled in that night? Who knows. I've lived in Birmingham for almost 4 years now and did not know that this place even existed. I honestly wish I found out sooner! While the lunch buffet selection isn't the greatest, the quality definitely makes up for it! Curries were hot and delicious, the chicken wasn't messin' around either! I will say that the single stand out dish for me was there fresh naan! I never had naan as good as this and I've been to my fair share of Indian restaurants in Birmingham and Atlanta! We arrived around lunch time and took advantage of their lunch buffet. We were welcomed and seated in no time. Their buffet offers a variety of vegetarian and meat options. The facility is Beautiful with authentic Indian decor and the waiters dress in Indian apparel. This gives the place a great fell of India and their culture. There vegetarian dishes are exceptional and the curry was the very best. I can truly say I have found another great Indian restaurant and home for Indian food. It was rather spicy with a thin tomato- heavy sauce. Aside from that issue, there was not much chicken in the dish and it was dry. There also wasn't much flavor in the sauce aside from tomato and heat. Putting all this together, I can't recommend it. Best case, they got the order wrong and the food wasn't great. I have come here multiple times because to me THIS IS THE PLACE to get AMAZING authentic Indian food. Everything I've ordered I have never been disappointed. My go to have been the chicken vindaloo (for people who LOVE very spicy foods) with white rice and garlic naan. Not to mention the chicken pakora, khass shish kabobs and chicken 65 are all great first choices of appetizers. If you're looking to avoid spicy they still have plenty of choices to choose from like the lamb tikka masala or goat curry without spice and even chicken mushroom. This isn't THE oldest running Indian restaurant in Birmingham for no reason. Though the only Downside I can say is the parking will be difficult when its crowded and the interior although very gorgeous Is rather small and can be a little tight. Taj India is a strong contender for my favorite restaurant in Birmingham. They have a very expansive vegetarian and vegan menu with a lot of really good options. Last time I went I ordered their amazing chana masala; I could eat this every day of the week without growing tired of it. A single order of the chana masala is easily enough to split into two meals, so it's a very good deal at under $10. Taj India currently offers takeout and delivery in addition to indoors dining. I ordered takeout and the service was quite fast, with my meal being ready in about ten minutes. The restaurant staff were all friendly and hospitable, and each wearing a mask. Takeout and delivery orders are served in reusable plastic containers, which is a nice bonus for reusability/sustainability. read more

My husband I and went to Taj India for lunch on Good Friday. We This is our second time in the new location and I really like the interior. Lots of light and space. We had the buffet and I tried a little bit of almost everything. We were served ice cold water and warm, crunchy naan. Everything was delicious. I have to be careful not to overeat!
