Ok if you know me, you know I love Taj India down. My family has been coming to this family owned and operated spot for all 30+ years. The lunch buffet might be my death row meal. It's a deal. And the food itself, you can eat a lot of without feeling gross and nasty like with other, greasier foods. The staff is on top of it. They bring you water and naan to your table, keep tabs on you, and always have a smile. Especially Fatima :). I've tried replicating a dal at my house, and I can't do it. I don't have the touch. But lentil dal here, the saag (spinach) paneer, and the yellow veggies they always have at the buffet (I think it's korma) are my favorites. I came last night for their Birmingham Restaurant Week deal, which was $14 for a full meal: appetizer, entree, and dessert! The appetizers for the full dinner meals come out like sizzling fajitas, my favorite of the meats we had was the lamb. My mom's entree came with a smiley face :). The place itself is pretty casual, with Indian decor and always a little incense burning by the door. They have a full bar, beer, and wine, but my mom swears that diet coke was made to be paired with Indian food. Found this restaurant be most of the most enjoyable Indian restaurants I found in years. The rice was cooked perfection, the garlic naan was so much better than I've had in the past. Had lamb Rogan Josh, Lamb korma, Saag Paneer, main dishes, Shrimp Pakora as an appetizer. Atmosphere, I give 10 out of 10, quality of service and friendliness of staff 10 out of 10, the quality and taste of the food 10 out of 10, also had pistachio ice cream. That's a sweet little treat at the end. 10 out of 10. Came here for dinner had a wonderful time was not rushed with the food. They were excellent with providing refills of drinks without being asked. We were actually one of the first ones in the door for Dinner service. I will be returning and I'm looking forward to my next trip. The owners are very pleasant and friendly. Food- I opted out of choosing the buffet (it had an assorted choice of apps and both vegetarian and proteins available- chicken) and ordered off the menu. Lamb Saag is my choice. The lamb was tender and flavorful. The spinach sauce had a pleasant kick to it. The Basmati rice was fluffy and delicious. The naan bread was mouth watering. Service- oriented for buffet style- but accommodating. Ambiance- Decorated in traditional Indian decor. Quantity- plenty of food off of menu. Buffet- speaks for itself. We are visiting friends in our old town and wanted some great Indian food, so we chose Taj India. We ordered many of their amazing dishes that were medium and high spice. Chicken and lamb -- they were all so delicious! We couldn't leave out the naan and garlic naan. This was a lot of food that was made at a good pace, so the service was great and we were all delighted with the flavors and quality of our food. Lately, this has been my favorite restaurant in Birmingham! I have only been for the lunch buffet, though. The staff is always very friendly. I think I've tasted almost everything on the menu, and it is all delicious. There is a great selection, and everything is very fresh! My *one* wish would be for them to post the menu each day, or maybe have a set buffet menu for each day of the week. Sometimes I really get my hopes up for a certain dish, only to find it's not on the buffet that day. However, it is hard to be disappointed when everything is so tasty! read more

Wow! Food was AMAZING. Easily polished off 2 plates and would've happily snacked on another plate. The lunch buffet offers a variety of flavors from very savory to sweet, extra heat or cool down creamy. The staff is so friendly and keep the water and naan bread coming. Absolutely a great meal and one of the most friendly and attentive staffs we have ever had. Top notch! Dinner was amazing also! Started with vegetable Pakora, very nice. Taj India's new location is absolutely gorgeous. What a transformation! Light and bright, the dining areas are spacious and inviting. Expect white tablecloths and friendly folks. The familiar lunch buffet is at the back of the restaurant near the kitchen. If you're unsure of Indian food this is the absolute best way of trying several different things to see what you like. Everything I get is always fresh and delicious, and this visit was no exception. Taj India is located in a small shopping center, a hidden away gem. I came here based on the reviews and I can say it did not disappoint at all. I ordered the House Special Thali for 1 that came with an assortment of delicious curries and tandoori. Honestly I would get one of the house specials again so I could try all of the different things. The flavors of the curries were amazing, one of my favorites was the green pea dish, I forget what it was called, but it was the best which I least expected. It does come with a ton of food but a perfect sampling. The bread was so fresh and the bottom was so crispy. It was perfect. We also had the lamb rogan josh, butter chicken, and chicken tikka masala which were again amazing white meat chicken with such a flavorful gravy, the lamb was so tender. Inside the building is very narrow but long, there was a ton of locals there eating and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals, lots of to go ordered were being picked up as well. The service was great, our waiter was very attentive and made sure we had all of our needs met. Next time I am in Birmingham I will definitely be back, it was so delicious! read more

I went in October 2023 with a friend for Sunday lunch. We did the buffet. Neither of us had very much experience with Indian food. Not really sure what to order and how the spices are incorporated so it was worth it to try the buffet to get to try several different things. It did not disappoint at all. We got to try different meats, beans, sauces, a soup, and a dessert. There is a label above each dish, that let us know what it was so we didn't have to ask. The staff was very kind. The food is heavily seasoned. I like spicy food a lot, so I was a fan of most everything that I tried. It was a good experience, and I highly recommend it. read more

I visited immediately after receiving notification that the buffet reopened. Understandably, the restaurant was packed. The line to pay wrapped around the dining area, which made it difficult for the hostess to seat us. Once we were seated, the line for food moved quite quickly. However, we had to wait for another staff member to being naan bread to each individual table. As for the food, they have decent options for a buffet. We were able to try some new dishes that we've never had, but it was difficult to find the name of the dishes, as the labels were misplaced. It cost under $15 per person for lunch, and we were out of the restaurant within an hour. Nonetheless, I think I would prefer paying slightly more for one amazing entree over mediocre buffet quality. read more

After a long day at work, I looked forward to some Indian takeaway and a movie. I placed my order online, picked it up, and came home. There is a parking lot that is free, and the pick up process was quick and easy. The staff thanked me and I was on my way. Upon arriving home, I opened my meal and was surprised that the Paneer Tikka Masala didn't look as I expected. What is usually a red color, was very orange. I'd requested low heat in the notes, yet my meal could clear even the most stuffed sinuses. I've had this dish at many different restaurants, and the flavor was just off. The spice made it difficult to enjoy. I recognize that every restaurant has their own recipe, but my recommendation would be to offer a spice scale on the online ordering. The naan was warm and flavorful and I was thankful that rice was included. The rose lassi is very good. It's sweet but not overly sweet. I was pleasantly surprised. read more

My heart is heavy as I write this review - I have loved Taj India for many years but the past few meals I've gotten have been so hot - so spicy and pickly, like vindaloo, that I'm afraid my days of enjoying their food are over. I miss the creamy sweet richness of the saag paneer with the little bit of heat at the end. Now I just get a mouthful of red pepper with a pickly-salty finish. I miss the cashew sweetness of the navrattan korma - now I just get vegetables in a sauce so hot I can barely stomach it with kabuli naan, which is the only thing that can break the heat. At lunch, the food seems much less hot - but the complex spiciness and sweetness and smokiness of a good curry still isn't there. I'm broken hearted to say I think I've just had my last meal from there. read more

One of my absolute favorite ethnic cuisines to eat is definitely Indian food. Birmingham definitely has many different options for Indian restaurants but Taj India is my favorite. The atmosphere inside is so homely and calm. I decided to try their shahi paneer with garlic naan and a samosa chaat. The creaminess of the shahi paneer made every bite satisfying with a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Pairing it with garlic naan made it even better with the warm buttery naan loaded with fresh garlic. One the other the samosa chaat had a vibrant look with a mixture of flavors bursting in my mouth. The tamarind chutney, dahi, fresh cilantro, sev, chickpeas, tomatoes and onion made my mouth water even more. Let me start by saying the food is great, however the front staff was a little disappointing. There have been several times where I've gone and been charged before even being seated. Needed an Indian fix when visiting and the Taj looked good so I hoped in the car and off I went. I used the cars navigation system which took me to their previous location! The address in Yelp is correct though. The service was great and I ordered the Thali which was very tasty. The shock was the appetizer that came - which was enough food for a meal for two. The thali was excellent and I was glad that I showed restraint with the starter. Every element of the thali was excellent and with the great service this is a great Indian restaurant! read more

Food here is really good and the take out orders are ready quickly! I would love to try eating in since so far we have only done take out twice. My only complaint is that the Pakoras were quite salty but the chicken tikka is delicious and the medium had a really good spice to it. read more

This is a difficult review. The chicken tikka masala was excellent, the naan and roti were perfect. The food was overall terrific except for the butter chicken. Which wasn't just bad it was awful. Like chunks of chicken covered in Ragu. No flavor, no cream, just horrible. It's like they didn't have the right sauces made so they just improvised. I came here with a group of friends and it was our first time. We waited for 25 minutes for our server to get to us until we realized people were just getting up and grabbing food. It was a very confusing experience with no one giving us any instructions. No "welcome, have you been here before" or anything like that. I thought we were forgotten so I went up to get a menu and we ended up ordering a la carte. Eventually I had to ask them how it works here and they didn't understand so I had to explain if it was buffet style and if our table just order a la carte...a very awkward and unwanted experience. For customer service, I give them a 2 out of 5. As far as the food, I've had real good and authentic Indian food as I just moved from Chicago, but to be fair as I can be, it was okay. At least for the butter chicken it was okay. The chicken was not tender, it was rubbery and hard and the flavoring was not there--I couldn't even taste the butter, I could only taste the spices and the rice was hard. I'm not sure any of us will go back, I'm sure Birmingham has got to have better options. I'll be sad if this place is the best that Birmingham has for Indian food... read more
