Nice way to enjoy Indian flavors near the house!…read more The Beyond Tikka came to our neighborhood; during the warmer months, we have food trucks come set up one night a week. I was looking forward to this one since it's a little different than our usual. It pretty simple: choose a bowl or burrito, and your choice of protein. I got the Beyond Tikka chicken bowl. It was beautiful and flavorful. I maybe could go to the next spicier level next time, though the 99° Chicken may be too hot? I also had a side of smashed samosas. They had a nice crunch, and a little "breadier" if that's the right word that the thinner, flakier shell than I've had before. They were good, though, and I really liked the tangy tamarind date nectar.

My friend swore she didn't like Indian food, but I convinced her to give it a shot. Let's just say she didn't resist when I suggested it for lunch again a few weeks later. We entered the bldg and the decor was cute...instagram-ish. We looked over the menu, which can be intimidating if you're not familiar with the cuisine. The waitress explained the menu and flavors for the items we inquired about so don't be intimidated or afraid to ask. The first visit, I got the chicken lollipops, which were really good. My friend ordered the Chicken Vijayawada (VJW) Biriyani. This was so good. I ordered the Tikka Masala and it was delicious as well! You can request mild, medium, and hot. I opted for the hot, which had some heat, but good nonetheless! The garlic naan was soooo good, too. Be sure to add an order to whatever you get; it pairs perfectly with whatever you order. For the second visit, the chicken VJW was on the line up again, the Monagadi Biriyani, chili chicken lollipops, and garlic naan of course. We liked the regular chicken lollipops better, but the chili ones were still good. Both Biriyanis were flavorful and the portions are massive. Definitely big enough for two people to eat off of for a meal. They have plenty of other traditional and some other unique offerings with a large variety of meat and veggie options. I highly recommend giving this place a try, especially if you love Indian food and if you want a good first experience with it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

1 STAR -- GREAT FOOD, TERRIBLE SERVICE…read more No customer service from the moment I walked in. This was my first time here, and honestly, I came because TikTok had this place ALL over my timeline. I was excited to finally try it, and I even told the hostess that it was my first visit. That excitement disappeared pretty quickly. The hostess had an AirPod in her ear, was fixing her hair and talking on the phone, and gave me the impression that I was bothering her by simply being there. I was sitting right in front of her, yet getting her attention felt like a chore. She eventually came over and asked if I was ready to order. I told her no because it was my first time and there were a LOT of things on the menu. Instead of giving me a minute, she literally turned around and walked away. When I was finally able to get her attention again, I ordered a mango lassi. It came out in a bottle--I'm assuming they were out of glasses. ‍ At that point, I decided to just order something I had seen on TikTok. And here's the frustrating part: THE FOOD WAS ACTUALLY GOOD! The food definitely deserves credit. Unfortunately, the service was so bad that it completely ruined the experience. I still left a tip, but honestly, after the level of service I received, it should have been ZERO. I paid it because that's what I normally do, but I definitely didn't feel like the service earned it. I should have trusted my first instinct and left when I realized how unwelcome I felt. Good food can bring customers in, but customer service is what makes them come back. For me, this was my first and last visit. I won't be back.

The butter chicken was so good and it paired perfectly with rice given. The service there was great. The staff were super nice and very attentive with their tables making sure that we had everything we needed. The food came out quicker than I expected, which is a plus. The ambience of the place is also very pleasant. The light is dimmed, which makes a place easy on the eye, and the tables are set up nicely. Overall, I think Taj India is a great place to go out and eat. Their prices are not too bad I spent around $18 on my meal. I would recommend Taj India to a friend!!

The boneless short ribs were tender, flavorful, and delicious. Served with a little shredded lettuce, they disappeared quickly! For our entrees, we decided to order family-style so everyone could sample a variety of dishes. We chose the Chicken Rogan Josh, Aloo Gobhi Matar, Bay Leaf Kebab Sizzler, and two orders of Garlic Naan. Everything was delicious, but the Kebab Sizzler was especially impressive. It features a combination of seasoned meat and seafood served on a sizzling cast-iron pan. The steam, aroma, and presentation were fantastic, and it was as good as it looked. Overall, Bay Leaf was a great choice for dinner. The food was flavorful, portions were generous, and ordering family-style allowed us to enjoy a nice variety of dishes. Desi Tadka remains one of my favorite Indian spots in Birmingham, and the food is still doing most…read moreof the heavy lifting. The chicken tikka masala? Still tasty. The sauce was luscious and velvety, even if it showed up tonight with a mild personality. I kept waiting for the heat to clock in for its shift, but apparently it had PTO approved. Still delicious though. The vegetable samosas were crispy on the outside with that delicate, comforting filling inside. No notes. Just solid. And the garlic naan? Dangerous. I told myself "just one more bite" at least seven times. It's garlicky, soft, and basically a carb trap I willingly fall into every visit. Now... the service. Let's just say if attentiveness were a spice, it was left in the kitchen. Our waitress vanished for extended periods like she was filming a documentary about the back of the restaurant. No check-in, no "how is everything," no interest in whether we were thrilled or quietly combusting. It felt less like dining and more like self-guided Indian cuisine. Food: still outstanding. Service: spiritually elsewhere. Four stars because the kitchen deserves it. The front of house might need a little masala of its own.
