Very happy to see the former Alchemy spot open and thriving. I was working late in Gloucester and decided to find a place for takeout on my way back home. Fortunately I saw that Taj was open. What a great place, wonderful exotic smells , friendly, knowledgeable staff and yes, all important, the food was great. After I told Stefanie, the manager, I was vegetarian, she suggested I try the Vegetable biryani... she told me it was her favorite, it was soooo good, I opted for the medium spice level and it was perfect, plenty of veggies and the garlic Naan was very good, as well Thank you Stefanie for the recommendation and Taj for breathing life back into this wonderful location read more

We had our second takeout order from here tonight. The food was good with both orders, however, the spice level is way too high. On both items, it says spice level can be modified. Our first experience, while delicious, way very spicy, despite requesting mild but we adjusted to it (side note: we love Indian food and totally expect some spice and can usually handle it). This time we checked the mild box and typed our request in the notes and it way beyond spicy. We really were not able to enjoy it. We're going to give it one more shot and call in our request. Worst Indian I have ever had. Tandoori chicken was burnt beyond edible. Paneer Saag was all sauce and no vegetables, and twice cooked potatoes were burnt and soggy. Samosas were passable, but nothing to write home about. We had take out. If we were eating in we would have sent back half the order. Much of what we ordered was pretty tasteless. Gloucester needs a good Indian restaurant. This isn't it. read more

Like some of the other people who have left reviews, I also love Indian food and was so excited to have an Indian restaurant a little bit closer on the North Shore. I got the aloo gobi and samosas and my partner got the chicken tikka masala. We were both pretty disappointed with the quality of food that we received. The texture and presentation were nice but there was minimal to no flavor and the food was bland. Most disappointingly, there was absolutely no spice in any of the dishes that we got. The drive to Beverly for Indian food has become even more worth it. read more

We ordered Aloo chat and veg biriyani. Both items are nothing close to what said they are. They are very bland and no flavor of any sort. Worst so called Indian food ever ate in USA. Please don't insult Indian food and it's authenticity by serving these kinds of non sense. read more

As others have reported this version of Indian food does fall short of good. Creative choices are inviting and the Biryani was very good. I was MOST disappointed by the Naan it was actually horrible ( you can get better at Stop n Shop). I will be making my stop in Beverly for my indian fix for now. read more

I love Indian food! So- when I heard that a new Indian restaurant had opened in Gloucester, I was excited to try it. Friday night for takeout- great way to end the work week. I ordered standards I have had many times in other places. Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, and Saag Paneer, my wife's favorite. And a Garlic Naan. And of course, the dishes came with Basmati Rice. What a dissapointment! The Tikka Masala was swimming in a heavy layer of oil, and had very little taste; where was the masala sauce? The vindaloo was quite sweet, but again had almost none of the rich deep spice that makes Indian so appealing. And the Saag was great if you like a bunch of pureed fresh greens without any hint of Indian connection. Where is the taste?! Nada. Garlic Naan? Rubbery, no hint of garlic, and not at all enticing to the palatte. At least it all came with the Basmati rice-- Sorry- rice was dry, undercooked and not the least delectable. Guess I'll be making the trip down the pike to Beverly when the Indian food bug bites- Taj, if you want to succeed, make the flavors Indian! And don't skip the Korma. read more

Got yummy take out this weekend at the new Serenitee restaurant: Chicken biryani, Indian chopped salad, and sag paneer made my night! I am glad to taste something new in Gloucester. Indi- veg is so appealing after so many nights of seafood and subs. This is not a traditional Indian restaurant, but a new American take on Indian food. Kudos to Serenitee for bringing new flavor to Gloucester. read more

Everything was fantastic! I had the Ginger Turmeric Martini and it was to die for. Spice level on food was on point and we couldn't have asked for a nicer server. Well worth the 30 minute drive. I can't wait to take more friends there! read more

LOVE this place! Garlic Naan & Lamb Vindaloo... So good I've gotten takeout there 3 times and haven't tried anything else yet.

Fun ambiance and friendly staff serving excellent breakfast sandwiches. Hearty frittata, bacon, and cheddar on fluffy Naan bread made for a really yummy start to the day. Vegetarian breakfast options available. We also snagged a great lightly fried cauliflower with veggie wrap that had some flavorful veggies and sauces. I was genuinely excited that this place opened up in Gloucester after having lived here for about a year and having lived in Queens NYC before that. The naan and the samosas were probably the best part of the meal, albeit the naan was a bit too greasy and the samosas had a bit too much salt. But the tikka masala was extremely bland and I've never ever seen so many leaves in the dish before. The sauce could for sure be thicker and didn't have the spices I've grown to expect from an Indian dish - this was the first time I've ever put sriracha in Indian food. I'll definitely try Taj again in the future, but as other commenters have said I think they need some more time to come into their own. read more

As a huge fan of Indian food, I was really excited to see Taj open up. The Serenity Restaurant Group is always high-quality and delicious, but they fell short with Taj. This isn't Indian food, it's American-Indian food - like chop suey isn't Chinese food. The naan was like a greasy overcooked cracker instead of being chewy and bread-like, the tikka masala was over-seasoned, but somehow still didn't taste like the real thing, and the biryani was over-seasoned and dry. The cauliflower salad was delicious and the tandoori chicken is good. All in all, if you want real Indian food it will still require a trip to Newburyport. read more

I was so excited for indian food in Gloucester since the next closest is all the way in Beverly. I could tell they use fresh ingredients but it was not like any indian food I've ever eaten and I've eaten a lot of indian food! The naan had no rise and was tiny, raw and inedible. We also ordered Aloo Gobi and Chicken Tikka Masala. The Aloo Gobi was awful and flavorless and had hard uncooked chickpeas in it. The chicken was bland and flavorless and lacked all of the delicious creamy spiciness I expect. We wanted to eat out as a special treat and were very disappointed. If they could somehow get someone who knows how to cook indian food we would order there all the time. But as of this moment we will not order from them again. read more

We had takeout in the opening week. First impression is the portions are VERY small with the containers of rice barely half full. The second was the oil in the dish - we got the tikka marsala (we figured that was a good base dish to test out a new place) and I have never seen so much oil in this dish before, it was really unappetising and I had to scoop the food out rather than pour over my rice. The taste was ok but on the bland side and I even had to add salt (which I never do). I'm hoping as they continue their pans will season and there will be more depth of flavour in their dishes. And I'm sorry to say the naan bread was super thin and greasy - like another reviewer the store bought is much better. Naan is not meant to be a crepe. We will give it another chance but will leave a few weeks for them to find their rhythm - if we have the same experience then I won't be returning. I hope I'm back here giving a much better review as we definitely welcome having Indian cuisine close by. read more
