We stumbled upon Blue Fez while looking for a healthy lunch in Salem, and we're so happy we gave it a try! After seeing lots of burgers, diners, pizza, and café options around town, their menu immediately caught our attention -- tagine, couscous, shakshouka, Moroccan mint tea, and plenty of fresh, flavorful options. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived, so we were a little unsure at first, but the pretty outdoor seating and beautiful weather convinced us to stay. Great decision! My aunt and I ordered the couscous bowl with beef and the mosaic bowl with chicken, while my little cousin got the chicken tenders and fries. The food took a little while to come out, but once it arrived, we understood why -- everything tasted incredibly fresh. The vegetables were delicious and well seasoned, the vinaigrette on the mosaic bowl was so flavorful, the beef was incredibly tender, and the grilled chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly. And the hummus was SOOOOO good! Honestly, my only wish was that there had been more of it in my mosaic bowl because I could've eaten a whole serving of it on its own. Even the chicken tenders and fries were good enough that my aunt and I kept stealing bites from my cousin! We also had a pomegranate mocktail and iced Moroccan mint tea, which was incredibly refreshing and paired perfectly with the meal. Blue Fez ended up being one of those places you're really glad you took a chance on. Fresh, quality food, great flavors, and wonderful service. I hope more people discover this spot -- it deserves to thrive! read more

This was one of our stops during our annual Salem trip, and I was a little skeptical at first bcuz there was no line outside. Around here in October, that's pretty rare! We were seated quickly, and our server Frank was great. He was professional, attentive, and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the lunch menu wasn't available on Sunday, so we ordered from the dinner menu instead. We started with the Moroccan Meatballs, served with hummus and harissa. I liked the flavor combination, but the meatballs were overcooked and on the dry side. The seasoning and accompaniments were good, so the dish has potential. For my entree, I ordered the Tagine Djaj, with chicken, potatoes, carrots, peas, olives, and preserved lemon in a ginger-saffron broth. The flavors were enjoyable, but the chicken had an inconsistent texture, with some pieces being tougher than others. I also wasn't a fan of how everything was served together because the broth soaked into my rice, which is a personal pet peeve. I ordered the Moroccan mint tea, it was lacking flavor. We also skipped dessert after learning they don't bake fresh daily and didn't have the carrot cake available. Overall, I appreciated the restaurant's aesthetic and cleanliness, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The prices felt a little high for the quality of the food, though. On the plus side, it was a peaceful dining experience without the crowds and chaos you often encounter in Salem during October. Frank was definitely a highlight of our visit, but the food didn't quite live up to my expectations. I'm glad we gave Blue Fez a try, but I won't revisit. read more

Came around 2pm on a Saturday and it was completely empty. We ordered the hummus, grape leaves and shakshouka as starters and had the Tagine as our main. The starters were amazing and would recommend to anyone to get the hummus as it was the star of the show! Food is pretty pricy but the mains are pretty large that they can be split between 2/3 people read more

Founds this place walking around town and it was excellent. Has the Mosaic plat as an appetizer, great for multiple people to share and get a taste of everything. The entrees were very good and excellent service! read more

Every single bar in this town and restaurant were super full.... we actually stood in line for 45 minutes at a near by restaurant/bar, only be told when we got inside unless everyone in our party was ordering a meal they they would not see us. But we checked in here and Immediately that sat us and service was excellent.... Drinks were amazing in the end we had the rest of our friend group join us (8 people ) and our waitress, Karlee, was so so nice and accommodating. Thank you all read more

Not super impressed with this place unfortunately :/ I'd give it a 3.5 honestly. We ordered the falafel and hummus and it was laughable. The falafel was definitely a frozen mix, still pretty tasty but not authentic. Also there was like no hummus under the falafel. We ordered more hummus and pita and it was not worth the $16/$17. It's nice they offer vegan food/ vegan options. The wine was good too. read more

We ordered the mosaic plate and a falafel wrap to share. I asked our server, Frank, if the options we chose were basically vegan, as in did not have yogurt, and he answered yes. The mosaic plate was excellent. Expensive, but good ingredients and I would order again. Unfortunately, Frank tried to pass off a lamb wrap as the falafel I ordered, and doubled down, saying I absolutely ordered that....even though I asked if it was vegan and he said yes. He put in a new order and we got it a little while later. All's well and good, until I get the bill. Apparently, gratuity is an automatic 20%. I asked where it said that, because it didn't on the store front or menu. Frank tells me it's an October policy. Well thanks for the heads up dude! Frank needs to write down orders and learn some manners. read more

I came here for dinner on a late August early evening. Blue Fez a cute Moroccan restaurant located in the little plaza that has the Bewitched statue on the corner. The decor is very lovely, and the booth I sat in was very comfortable. I ordered a Chicken Bastilla, which contains chicken, onion, eggs, and almonds braised in a ginger saffron base wrapped in filo dough topped with sugar and cinnamon. It was really tasty! There was also complimentary bread with olive oil. The gal who was my server, Haley (hope I spelled her name right) was AWEOME. We had a great conversation about solo-traveling, and she was super sweet! read more

WORST restaurant experience of my life! NEVER GO! And also explains why this restaurant is pretty much always empty non-season. And at Halloween when restaurants in Salem have unbelievably long queues, this restaurant was still occupied only at 30% of its capacity! Also, this is my first negative review in a very long time, but I had to take the time out to write it, they deserve it! Worst experience, rude & disrespectful staff, and they put it all on "our owner watches customers on video and he ordered us to talk to you", just because I gave a piece of home made bread to my 1 & 3 year old as they're both picky eaters and were very hungry. Neat & clean, no mess bread! That's it! They said put it aside before we request you to "throw it away" or else (indirectly) feel free to leave the restaurant. (Which we did). Never happened with me before, nowhere in the world, people are overly courteous when they see such little kids (one is still a baby), go out of their way to help you enjoy your meal. And this place was exactly the opposite! Disrespectful and rude staff! I'm glad their food is below average, which many of my friends have told me before, I used to go there for this coconut drink but not anymore! And not anyone from my network will go there, as all have kids and I'm warned them what they do to families with kids! For the server & manager who were unprofessional & disgraceful - try do better! read more

Had dinner here the other night. I loved the Moroccan salmon with succotash and saffron rice, it was delicious! I would eat this dinner all the time if I could. My husband got the sultans meshoui, which consists of chicken, lamb and beef over rice. The meat was overcooked, mainly the chicken. But the flavor was good and had the meat not been overcooked it would have been a home run! My teenage son got the chicken over rice and his complaint was the chicken was so dry from being overcooked. We also got the mushrooms and garlic appetizer and everyone enjoyed these!! The service was good and we sat outside on the patio which is near the bewitched statue. read more

I just want to start off by saying i came in last saturday night and now i wouldn't say my group had any kind of issue the food and atmosphere was amazing even for how very busy it was but what made me decide to NEVER come back to this establishment is first off the way the owner speaks to the customers in reviews is absolutely disgusting. and on top of that there was one server who had no tables to wait on causing my server jess to be extra busy. i do feel terrible for these girls coming in to work and being spoken to by this disrespectful excuse of a boss. ladies! please find a new place to work there's money everywhere. and for the owner please learn how to treat your staff and customers. it's horrible seeing things like this read more

actually unbelievable. Waiter said that the owner would make him double charge my Coke because I asked for a replacement due to how water downed it was (it was a cup full of ice and about 1-4 Coke). I said I wanted it taken away and not charged. came up to us 4-5 times asking if we were "done picking away" which they didn't do to any other table. automatically added a 20% gratituity (never informed us of this policy whatsoever) when service was HORRENDOUS- had to ask other servers to get mine and they never even got him. one dish was good (lamb tajine) and that was about it. seems like an incredibly hostile work environment read more

A couple friends and I had a delightful lunch at Blue Fez over the weekend. The amosphere was warm and I love the little carved archways to give the space a Morocan feel. The food and service were the highlight of our experience. We enjoyed sharing the Mosaic platter and an order of falafel and chicken brochette. Everything was fresh and flavorful. I especially loved the tomato/onion jam and the quality of the hummus. The waiter brought another round of pita bread and was especially helpful when considering dessert. Don't miss out on the baklava! It's sweet but not overladened with honey. The spices are also more flavor forward than other places. read more

We were visiting Salem and wanted to eat something different than the usual pizza and burgers and decided to come here. The staff was extremely nice. We decided to eat outdoors cause the weather was nice. We ordered the traditional tea. I ordered lamb Tagine and my husband ordered chicken Tagine. The tea was supposed to be peppermint however it did not taste like peppermint and it still had the leaves inside. My dish came out right away. The food was a bit cold very flavorful and the lamb was very fatty. My husband's dish took forever to come out. I was already done eating by the time his plate came out. The waitress came out and apologized and said that the chicken was marinating. We thought he was going to receive chicken on the bone and he ended up getting chicken breast which to me should've been done very quickly however we both ended up eating by ourselves then the icing on the cake was when the bill came out! The waitress wanted to apologize by giving our drinks for free, which we appreciated, however with that said we paid $90 for a meal that we did not enjoy! I remember visiting Morocco and with $90 could've feed an entire village! Extremely overpriced dish. read more

Terrible Customer Service! Ridiculous! The Blue Fez Restaurant was COMPLETELY EMPTY at 5:00 on a Saturday. I asked if my husband and I could sit a specific table. Owner said, "No, it's a 4 top" I asked the waitress does the restaurant have a lot of reservations now, she said, "No" So we left. Never have I posted a bad review but this was ridiculous. read more

This place is a hidden gem. The food was amazing!! Great tasting lamb tajine. So many wonderful flavors. Go!!

I really wanted to like this place as Moroccan food is literally one of my favorite cuisines in the world and I was really excited to eat here. The decor was lovely and service was great. We started off with the lentil soup and eggplant appetizer which were pretty decent. We order the Moroccan couscous as our main entree and this is where things went haywire. We happen to make tagine at home and are very familiar. The chef lied and said he made the tagine in the tagine pot they brought it in which is impossible. Moroccan tagine makes the chicken soft, slow cooked, and fall off the bone. The chicken they brought us was quickly sauce pan cooked, un-marinated lazy and wrong. The tagine pot they brought it in was even cold. The chicken was tough and disappointing...what's worse is when we asked the waitress to ask the chef how it made it he lied and said he made it in the tagine pot. I found it very insulting that he thought we wouldn't know better...you should never scam your customers to save a bit of time in the kitchen. Taking shortcuts like this will ruin a restaurant's reputation! read more

Blue Fez was not that busy when we were there, but it should be packed with a line out the door. We enjoyed our food so much and our server was outstanding! This is a lovely little restaurant. It's so nice to have Moroccan food in Salem, and even better that it's delicious. We've been here a few times and always found it to be quiet, relaxing and a good night out. They have full bar but never busy enough for a full-time bartender. Nevertheless, they have a broad cocktail menu and a decent wine selection. The menu is flexible; you can do smalls (tapas) or mains. Lamb is my favorite animal protein, and its soo good prepared this way (tagine). The ambiance really is lovely (nice Moroccan decor, soft contemporary music). read more

Stopped in for desert around 6PM and other than the staff we were the only ones in the place, two days before Halloween, this should have been a clue. I saw they had crepes, but keeping in theme with their Moroccan food the crepes have dates and nuts, no chocolate, no fancy desert styles. The service was excellent, but didn't care for the non-traditional by US standards crepes. read more

This was the first time in ages we had been to Salem and during fall season. Lovely spot in downtown area and cozy interiors and ambience . We went on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was short staffed, but they did their best to get to all tables as fast as the way could. We started with the falafel and eggplant zaalouk. Falafel was a bit oily for me but tasty and the eggplant tapas was delicious. I wish they served it with pita bread in the side vs two tiny toasted ones. We are not huge eaters so always end up sharing the entree between me and my husband so we ordered the Tagine Marrakech with couscous. It was plenty for us and delicious. Just wished it was a bit more hot(temp wise) as it was a chilly night. Finished it with a dessert of Moroccan puréed dates with ice cream. It was more than enough for two and just the right amount of sweet for us ! Loved it! Really nice spot in Salem and I wish we had something like this closer to home . read more

I want to be very clear: the staff and service at Blue Fez in Salem were incredible. The waiters, bartenders, and every team member was kind, attentive, and really made us feel welcome. However, the experience was completely ruined by the owner. He openly berated and belittled his staff in a way that was appalling. No matter how good the food or atmosphere is, that kind of treatment is inexcusable. Because of this, we will never return--no matter how good everything else was. read more

Delicious couscous dishes transport you to Morocco , beautiful decor and excellent service. A gem on the north Shore!

Great restaurant in the heart of Salem. It was not busy during a weeknight and the waiter was very helpful. There is nice art work on the walls and traditional music playing. I ordered the mint tea which was not on the menu to share with my table. It came out in a pretty silver pot and had enough for at least 4-5 cups of tea. I ordered the lamb shank tagine which was delicious. Very tender and flavorful. The couscous under it was also very tasty. The portions are very generous and I surely could have split with another person. read more

Joined a few friends here on Saturday night. We opted to start with the Mosaik platter, a delightful sampling of all their apps. From the hummus to the beets and grape leaves, everything was seasoned and prepared to perfection. At the suggestion of our server, we also got an order of meatballs; these were tender and seasoned just right. Knowing we were saving room for dessert, we opted for the Lamb shank with couscous across the table. The lamb was so tender and juicy, the couscous so huge and, dare I say, fluffy! There were roasted carrots and, much to my delight, parsnips as well. For dessert, we chose the pistachio mouse cake and the Morrocan crepes. Beautifully plated! The pistachio really didn't have much mousse, but the cake was very good. The crepes were fried and drizzled with honey and nuts; so fricking yummy! Service was impeccable as well! Can't wait to come back! read more

We really wanted this to be good, it was a special occasion. Looked like we were the only customers for an early dinner. Service was extremely slow, took an extra 20 minutes to get the bill. One of my guests complained about the plates being dirty and a chunk of crud in his lemonade. He was not wrong. We were not given verbally given options about alternatives to couscous, it was assumed that we were ok with couscous. I would have been fine with it had it been cooked properly, but it was watery and the texture was gross as it was overcooked. The waiter casually offered my son rice when he brought our entrees, so I assumed it was a cheap side dish since it was already an option to. When I complained about my couscous, I asked for rice too. Big mistake. The chef who makes watery couscous also makes watery overcooked rice. Neither was edible. All I could scavenge was the And later, after waiting absurdly long for our bill, I found out that we were charged and additional $13 per huge.plate of watery non-edible rice. All of my polite concerns about the couscous and rice texture fell on deaf ears- 'that's how they do it in Morocco, I've been there' according to the waiter. (Please do not tell an African customer who has been eating Moroccan food her whole life how rice and couscous are supposed to come out.) The salmon was rank and dry. The lentil soup was more like non-lentil soup. Very few lentils at the bottom, mostly water with veggies. One person said the lamb was ok but not flavorful as in lacking spices. The roasted veggies were good and I was able to nibble on those. That is how I survived. My tea that I ordered upon being seated was forgotten until the end of the meal. When it came in a to-go cup, it tasted as if it had been brewing for hours. It was not what I expected and the waiter's excuse then was that their customers don't like spices and we have to tell them we want flavor!!! Thank you Blue Fez for the memorable meal on my family's special occasion. It was a memorable fail. I now understand why we were the only diners! We left hungry and hope the restaurant will focus on better food and service. We really wanted this to be our go-to spot. But it is a no-go. (This review is from summer 2020). read more

Blue Fez was just simply superb! We were here for an early dinner just after Blue Fez opened. The staff was very welcoming and the server helpful and attentive. The octopus appetizer was about the best I ever tasted and the accompanying humus and veggies were flavorful and added a good contrast. The other two main dishes we had were different, but great in their own way. Both featured a lamb shank that was tender and flavorful with couscous and a mix of vegetables. One was delicately flavored with saffron and the other was complex; both savory and sweet-ish at the same time with cumin, cardamom and coriander. Cost was modest for such fine fare. read more

This was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. The staff was very friendly and welcoming and they answered all our questions about the food that we were unfamiliar with. The hummus from the hummus appetizer was delicious and tasted very fresh and well seasoned. The pitas were tasty and very fluffy. Being a pita and hummus critic I was very pleasantly surprised. The complementary bread tasted just as good. The olive oil dip that came with it was very flavorful and went great with the bread and the pita. The host suggested the Moroccan Tagine. Niether me nor my girlfriend had tagine before. The waiter suggested we share the plate as it is quite large. He was right! After the appetizer we had just enough room to split the tagine. The meat was perfectly cooked and though I'm not usually a fan of prunes or figs, they went perfectly with the lamb and rice and I couldn't stop eating them along with the apricots. My girlfriend and I were fighting for the last bites. The service was excellent and the food came out quickly after ordering. We ate outside and it was a very nice atmosphere in the courtyard. The inside of the restaurant has a very nice vibe to it as well, and they have very clean bathrooms. The restaurant was a bit hidden behind the other restaurants in the courtyard so it was hard to notice at first. read more
