A couple friends and I had a delightful lunch at Blue Fez over the weekend. The amosphere was warm and I love the little carved archways to give the space a Morocan feel. The food and service were the highlight of our experience. We enjoyed sharing the Mosaic platter and an order of falafel and chicken brochette. Everything was fresh and flavorful. I especially loved the tomato/onion jam and the quality of the hummus. The waiter brought another round of pita bread and was especially helpful when considering dessert. Don't miss out on the baklava! It's sweet but not overladened with honey. The spices are also more flavor forward than other places. read more

Came around 2pm on a Saturday and it was completely empty. We ordered the hummus, grape leaves and shakshouka as starters and had the Tagine as our main. The starters were amazing and would recommend to anyone to get the hummus as it was the star of the show! I came here for dinner on a late August early evening. Blue Fez a cute Moroccan restaurant located in the little plaza that has the Bewitched statue on the corner. The decor is very lovely, and the booth I sat in was very comfortable. I ordered a Chicken Bastilla, which contains chicken, onion, eggs, and almonds braised in a ginger saffron base wrapped in filo dough topped with sugar and cinnamon. It was really tasty! There was also complimentary bread with olive oil. The gal who was my server, Haley (hope I spelled her name right) was AWEOME. Had dinner here the other night. I loved the Moroccan salmon with succotash and saffron rice, it was delicious! I would eat this dinner all the time if I could. My husband got the sultans meshoui, which consists of chicken, lamb and beef over rice. The meat was overcooked, mainly the chicken. But the flavor was good and had the meat not been overcooked it would have been a home run! My teenage son got the chicken over rice and his complaint was the chicken was so dry from being overcooked. We also got the mushrooms and garlic appetizer and everyone enjoyed these!! We were visiting Salem and wanted to eat something different than the usual pizza and burgers and decided to come here. The staff was extremely nice. We decided to eat outdoors cause the weather was nice. We ordered the traditional tea. I ordered lamb Tagine and my husband ordered chicken Tagine. The tea was supposed to be peppermint however it did not taste like peppermint and it still had the leaves inside. My dish came out right away. The food was a bit cold very flavorful and the lamb was very fatty. My husband's dish took forever to come out. I was already done eating by the time his plate came out. The waitress came out and apologized and said that the chicken was marinating. We thought he was going to receive chicken on the bone and he ended up getting chicken breast which to me should've been done very quickly however we both ended up eating by ourselves then the icing on the cake was when the bill came out! The waitress wanted to apologize by giving our drinks for free, which we appreciated, however with that said we paid $90 for a meal that we did not enjoy! This is a lovely little restaurant. It's so nice to have Moroccan food in Salem, and even better that it's delicious. We've been here a few times and always found it to be quiet, relaxing and a good night out. They have full bar but never busy enough for a full-time bartender. Nevertheless, they have a broad cocktail menu and a decent wine selection. The menu is flexible; you can do smalls (tapas) or mains. Lamb is my favorite animal protein, and its soo good prepared this way (tagine). The ambiance really is lovely (nice Moroccan decor, soft contemporary music). read more

I really wanted to like this place as Moroccan food is literally one of my favorite cuisines in the world and I was really excited to eat here. The decor was lovely and service was great. We started off with the lentil soup and eggplant appetizer which were pretty decent. We order the Moroccan couscous as our main entree and this is where things went haywire. We happen to make tagine at home and are very familiar. The chef lied and said he made the tagine in the tagine pot they brought it in which is impossible. Moroccan tagine makes the chicken soft, slow cooked, and fall off the bone. The chicken they brought us was quickly sauce pan cooked, un-marinated lazy and wrong. The tagine pot they brought it in was even cold. The chicken was tough and disappointing...what's worse is when we asked the waitress to ask the chef how it made it he lied and said he made it in the tagine pot. I found it very insulting that he thought we wouldn't know better...you should never scam your customers to save a bit of time in the kitchen. Taking shortcuts like this will ruin a restaurant's reputation! read more

I saw they had crepes, but keeping in theme with their Moroccan food the crepes have dates and nuts, no chocolate, no fancy desert styles. This was the first time in ages we had been to Salem and during fall season. Lovely spot in downtown area and cozy interiors and ambience . We went on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was short staffed, but they did their best to get to all tables as fast as the way could. We started with the falafel and eggplant zaalouk. Falafel was a bit oily for me but tasty and the eggplant tapas was delicious. I wish they served it with pita bread in the side vs two tiny toasted ones. We are not huge eaters so always end up sharing the entree between me and my husband so we ordered the Tagine Marrakech with couscous. It was plenty for us and delicious. Just wished it was a bit more hot(temp wise) as it was a chilly night. Finished it with a dessert of Moroccan puréed dates with ice cream. We really wanted this to be good, it was a special occasion. Looked like we were the only customers for an early dinner. Service was extremely slow, took an extra 20 minutes to get the bill. One of my guests complained about the plates being dirty and a chunk of crud in his lemonade. He was not wrong. We were not given verbally given options about alternatives to couscous, it was assumed that we were ok with couscous. I would have been fine with it had it been cooked properly, but it was watery and the texture was gross as it was overcooked. The waiter casually offered my son rice when he brought our entrees, so I assumed it was a cheap side dish since it was already an option to. When I complained about my couscous, I asked for rice too. Big mistake. The chef who makes watery couscous also makes watery overcooked rice. Neither was edible. All I could scavenge was the And later, after waiting absurdly long for our bill, I found out that we were charged and additional $13 per huge.plate of watery non-edible rice. All of my polite concerns about the couscous and rice texture fell on deaf ears- 'that's how they do it in Morocco, I've been there' according to the waiter. (Please do not tell an African customer who has been eating Moroccan food her whole life how rice and couscous are supposed to come out.) The salmon was rank and dry. The lentil soup was more like non-lentil soup. Very few lentils at the bottom, mostly water with veggies. One person said the lamb was ok but not flavorful as in lacking spices. The roasted veggies were good and I was able to nibble on those. That is how I survived. My tea that I ordered upon being seated was forgotten until the end of the meal. When it came in a to-go cup, it tasted as if it had been brewing for hours. It was not what I expected and the waiter's excuse then was that their customers don't like spices and we have to tell them we want flavor!!! Thank you Blue Fez for the memorable meal on my family's special occasion. It was a memorable fail. I now understand why we were the only diners! Great restaurant in the heart of Salem. It was not busy during a weeknight and the waiter was very helpful. There is nice art work on the walls and traditional music playing. I ordered the mint tea which was not on the menu to share with my table. It came out in a pretty silver pot and had enough for at least 4-5 cups of tea. I ordered the lamb shank tagine which was delicious. Very tender and flavorful. The couscous under it was also very tasty. Joined a few friends here on Saturday night. We opted to start with the Mosaik platter, a delightful sampling of all their apps. From the hummus to the beets and grape leaves, everything was seasoned and prepared to perfection. At the suggestion of our server, we also got an order of meatballs; these were tender and seasoned just right. Knowing we were saving room for dessert, we opted for the Lamb shank with couscous across the table. The lamb was so tender and juicy, the couscous so huge and, dare I say, fluffy! There were roasted carrots and, much to my delight, parsnips as well. For dessert, we chose the pistachio mouse cake and the Morrocan crepes. Beautifully plated! Lovey decor, friendly staff & absolutely delicious Moroccan food. The wrap was perfectly toasted will grilled chunks of tender, flavorful chicken breast , hummus, olives & feta. The Mediterranean pizza, which my hubby who does not love fish did modify to remove anchovies) also did not disappoint with its olive and onion goodness. After trying Moroccan food on a trip abroad, we were SO excited to find a local spot that makes authentic (and awesome) Moroccan food so close to home! Blue Fez is a cute little spot in Salem with cozy ambiance and phenomenal service. They have a very extensive menu with tons of vegetarian-friendly options and a variety of items from recognizable to adventurous. Blue Fez was just simply superb! We were here for an early dinner just after Blue Fez opened. The staff was very welcoming and the server helpful and attentive. The octopus appetizer was about the best I ever tasted and the accompanying humus and veggies were flavorful and added a good contrast. The other two main dishes we had were different, but great in their own way. Both featured a lamb shank that was tender and flavorful with couscous and a mix of vegetables. One was delicately flavored with saffron and the other was complex; both savory and sweet-ish at the same time with cumin, cardamom and coriander. Cost was modest for such fine fare. read more

I highly recommend Blue Fez! It's a gorgeous Moroccan restaurant with incredible food, from the drinks to the hors d'oeuvres to the entrees. Our group of nine were easily sat and welcomed with recommendations on what to try. We ordered the Tagine Dajaj, Couscous Royal, and Seafood Paella along with hummus, the cigars, and meatballs. Probably some of the best hummus and pita most of us have had. But each meal was so delicious we were licking our plates by the end of it. Just had one of the best meals and had to share. I went to Blue Fez in Salem right after it opened and it was really good. Haven't been there for a few years so decided to check it out again. My husband and I went to check it out tonight and have to say it was so good. Our server Danielle was awesome. She's very knowledgeable and super friendly and was one of those people that makes you feel like family. She had a couple of specials, and then she mentioned a chefs tasting menu, it was $50 per person. We spent some time thinking about it and looking at the menu and decided to do the tasting menu. Definitely not disappointed! We started with lentil soup. Then a shared appetizer plate that had bread, beets, carrots, hummus, eggplant, roaster peppers, artichokes and grape leaves. Then we had falafel with hummus and harissa, couscous with vegetables, beef with figs, and some other fruits and veggies, chicken with rice and lentils. We also had a dessert that was like a bakalava with a nut mixture with honey whipped in phyllo dough with honey on a plate with chocolate drizzle and whipped cream. I cannot wait to get over being so full to go back again. I will say that a few of the things that were served are things that I don't normally eat but they were amazing!! First time coming with my friend. I've only had a limited amount of Mediterranean food so I wanted to expand my palate. For appetizers, we shared a lentil soup, blue fez salad and falafels. I loved loved the lentil soup, delicious and simple. The falafels were nice and crispy with a fresh hummus. The blue fez salad had a strong citrus flavor with every bite better than the last. My entree was the shrimp tagine with couscous and my friend got the refissa. The shrimp had taken on a beautiful color and the entire dish tasted perfect. When I heated up the leftovers it was just as good. I tried my friends dish and also loved the hearty lentil taste. Pita is served at the bottom of the bowl but our server kindly suggested to have it on the side to dip which was also great. As our dessert, we decided on the mango mousse cake and were not disappointed. It was light and not overly sweet. Very straightforward and satisfying. Overall, great experience and will definitely bring more friends and family. Wonderful local establishment especially given the price! read more

We ordered shakshouka, which was described as having a 'poached' egg; this egg was STEAMING hot and the yolk was fully cooked through (see: nowhere near poached). Very obviously microwaved. Main course was fine, decent flavors but the couscous was somehow undercooked and also tasted like it was reheated/old. Absurdly overpriced relative to what they're serving, felt like this restaurant has given up but maybe coasts on location in a tourist town? I won a gift certificate for this restaurant in a local Salem raffle (specific details of charity and raffle not listed because I do not want them to be blamed). Because of the gift certificate, my boyfriend, sister, and roommate decided to go to Blue Fez for dinner on Sunday, July 3rd after a day of moving apartments. I was excited because I thought I'd be able to at least pay for my meal and my sister's meal (as repayment for helping me move). We were also very excited for the drinks as they've been great in the past, as well as the delicious complimentary bread we've received before. We arrive and there's one or two other diners there. Despite high-class establishment pricing, there is not a high-class establishment ambience. Music was not playing-- instead, they were playing a photo slideshow on a tv screen. At first, they're showing pictures of the food, but the slideshow devolves into something far more strange later in the meal... but I'll get to that in time. Shortly after we're seated, we're informed that they don't have a bartender that night (really? On a holiday weekend where most people have the next day off?) so none of the drinks that we looked forward to. We decide that we'll go ahead and stay anyway. I inform them that I won a gift card from a local Salem charity raffle (I specify to them which one and give details). The gift card was valued at $25 at minimum by the raffle, but whoever made the gift certificate had put a smiley face and a question mark at the value on the certificate itself. Seems promising! I gave it to our server and asked if we could be informed of the value. We look at the menu and decide what we'd like. Server comes back and says that she's having trouble with the gift certificate-- she can't find it in their system. She asks if I'd like for her to call the manager. I let her know that I would like that. We figure that it will be sorted out since it's very obviously not a fraudulent gift certificate and we go ahead and order anyway. We essentially wanted to know the value so we could figure out if we should get wine or something too, but were all planning on getting meals regardless. She comes back and tells us that she called the manager but doesn't propose any solutions. I ask if there's anything she can do/ask them to figure out what's going on with the certificate. She agrees and leaves again. Now we've been sitting there for a while, still no music, no bread (guess they stopped doing that?), lots of gift certificate confusion. After a long while, she comes back and tells me that there's nothing they can do. I'll just have to come back again when the manager is there. She has me write down my number and give it to them so they can call me when the manager is in. Well that sucks, but we've ordered food... like half an hour ago so we're eating here I guess. Then someone comes out with our food! Nice, we're hungry, we want to eat, and we want to leave and forget about this horrible experience. But it's not our food, it's the complimentary bread... being given to us literally half an hour after seating. One very small round of bread for four people. At least the nibbles we all got were really good. Eventually the food comes out and it's underwhelming to say the least. Grossly overpriced and gross, to say more accurately. My boyfriend ordered a duck dish that was quite expensive, and it was so excessively fatty that he couldn't eat most of it. My dish was edible, but very bitter and unimpressive. My sister and roommate didn't have anything to say about their meals (because if you don't have anything nice to say...). Now to the crowning glory of this experience... the progression of the slideshow. Started off innocently enough with photos of their dishes, but devolved into memes. Really, really weird boomer memes. The climax of the evening was when a meme appeared depicting a nude cartoon boy standing on a nude cartoon girl's head as they attempt to have sex. Or was the climax the old man bathing in a forklift? Meanwhile my boyfriend is attempting to suffer through an inedible duck dish at a premium price. This place ain't right. Oh, and nearly half a year later, I don't think the manager has been in because they have yet to call me/leave a message. read more

Our party of four made an early reservation for a new Moroccan restaurant in Salem called Blue Fez. We came to like Moroccan food during a trip through Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca, and were anxious to check out this restaurant. It's located in downtown Salem, near the Bewitched sculpture. They have numerous seating choices including alfresco dining, or you can dine at the bar, at the high-top tables near the front windows or the more intimate dining room in the back of the restaurant. We found it to be a very pleasant, clean and attractive venue. We ordered the Hummus as a starter, which was more than enough for four people. They hummus was very tasty, creamy with garlic, lemon juice and oil. We consumed all of it with the accompanying pita, and with the remaining warm and crusty bread Blue Fez provides once seated. Three out of four diners ordered the Lamb Tagine for dinner, which according to our server, was delicious. And one diner ordered the Salmon Mogador, pan roasted with red peppers, brussel sprouts, raisins, zucchini and carrots. They thought it was delicious. The Lamb Tagine is a braised lamb shank with dried apricots and prunes in a tasty sweet sauce. I thought it was excellent, eating the entirety of this substantial meal. The couscous was delicious, large Israeli couscous which was tasty and had a great texture. When in Morocco, many restaurants offered pigeon dishes including pigeon soup, which I did try and did in fact enjoy. I asked if they were going add a traditional pigeon dish to the menu, the answer was - not likely! Service was outstanding throughout our meal, our attentive and polite server always made sure our water glasses were full and the dinner was to our linking. Polling our party for their Yelp votes, we found two 4's and two 5's on this particular evening. As the service was excellent, we're rounding up to a 5-star dining experience. read more

Luckily, the food is amazing, even though the service is middling at best. In our group, two of us had the spicy salmon (one with couscous and one with rice), one of us had the chicken curry with rice, and one of us had the paella. We shared the dolmas and an order of hummus. Everything was delicious and the plates were huge. Unfortunately, the service was very slow even though the dining room was only half full. This was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. The staff was very friendly and welcoming and they answered all our questions about the food that we were unfamiliar with. The hummus from the hummus appetizer was delicious and tasted very fresh and well seasoned. The pitas were tasty and very fluffy. Being a pita and hummus critic I was very pleasantly surprised. The complementary bread tasted just as good. The olive oil dip that came with it was very flavorful and went great with the bread and the pita. The host suggested the Moroccan Tagine. Niether me nor my girlfriend had tagine before. The waiter suggested we share the plate as it is quite large. He was right! After the appetizer we had just enough room to split the tagine. The meat was perfectly cooked and though I'm not usually a fan of prunes or figs, they went perfectly with the lamb and rice and I couldn't stop eating them along with the apricots. My girlfriend and I were fighting for the last bites. The service was excellent and the food came out quickly after ordering. We ate outside and it was a very nice atmosphere in the courtyard. The inside of the restaurant has a very nice vibe to it as well, and they have very clean bathrooms.
