Also had the Indian tea at the end of our meal, really good cup of chai, came in a cute little teapot as well, enough for 3 refills of my teacup. Could not resist having an Indian meal in Amsterdam. After a few hours of walking around, the choice was between something local and a highly rated Indian restaurant. It was an easy decision for me. I was happy to see they served Kingfisher beer. After drinking Heineken with almost all meals, it was time to make a change :). They served spicy papad with mint and tamarind chutney for starters. Tasted great with the beer. Ordered the Madras Chicken Curry - it was presented well and tasted great. I also ordered biryani to-go based on recommendation from the staff for my dinner for the following day. Service was a winner! I was dining alone but I found the perfect Indian restaurant and I want to share my experience with you! I was hankering for a good curry. Taj did not disappoint! I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo. The waiter said, "It's very hot". I said, "Good"! I was very hot. It was also very delicious! It was so hot I thought my face would melt. It was the kind of heat that would make Robert Oppenheimer (father of the atomic bomb), jealous. It would make Shiva very proud. But it was so delicious. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. I had the chicken tikka tandoori which was very flavorful and came with rice, a side salad and vegetable curry. Our server was so kind and gifted us a complimentary dessert that was out of this world. They even offered us more tea but we did not have the time. With already great review on Yelp, we decided to try this restaurant which was also close to our apartment. We did not have a reservation and we were surprised to see that the restaurant was almost packed, thankfully we had arrived early and we only waited a few minutes a the counter. A traditional indian restaurant with only indian staff, a very detailed menu, and great service. Exquisite food and drinks. If you love spicy, this is it! I was quite happy with my choice of lamb biryani. The meals is served in the center on the table which makes it easier to share. I found this spot at random still open at 10pm when everything else around the area was already closed. The staff was so sweet and sat us immediately despite being so late in the evening. The food was delicious we ordered off of their meal specials that serves three courses and honestly it was such a great price for the amount and quality of food. I ate here back in 2014 and had a wonderful meal with my wife, it was our fifth wedding anniversary or thereabouts (exact dining date unclear). Place was peculiar in the sense that the owner was very talkative with us and seemed sure he recognized me and that I was a repeat customer. We were only there as it was less than 5 minutes walk from our hotel and had never been there before. It's nearly impossible to recall what we ordered (Vindaloo with lamb sounds right), my wife probably took pictures but I'm not going to search for those. I do remember thinking the food very satisfying and the image of the looming Heineken Experience building we walked past just around the corner from the restaurant. The main purpose of this review is to fulfill a promise I made to the grateful and attentive owner. He asked as we left to give a positive review on Tripadvisor. I don't have an account there, so I'm attempting to make good by posting here at Yelp. Seven years later I was reminded of this promise when reminiscing about that stay in Amsterdam. Definitely, some of the best Indian food I've ever had and I've had a lot! We stumbled across this place after a tour and were pretty hungry so didn't really care about the rating. When I looked it up on Yelp, I was shocked to see it have a near perfect rating so I was excited to see how good this place could be. For a starter, they brought in papads, but with dipping sauces which I had never really seen before. One of the dipping sauces was a sweet chutney while the other was more creamy. Both were really good with the papad. For the main course, I ordered a Paneer Butter Masala curry (comes with rice) and a garlic naan on the side. The curry is definitely more than enough for 1 and probably not quite enough for two people. Also, they give you rice to share with the table so it is recommended that you also get a side of naan to finish your curry. The curry was incredible. Extremely rich and creamy, but was still enjoyable to eat. The paneer was cooked extremely well - very chewy, but also lightly crisp on the edges. The garlic naan was also some of the best I've ever had. Very fluffy and actually tasted like garlic. It was one of the few times it felt actually worth paying extra for the garlic naan. The rice was also not just plain basmati, but a fried rice and was also very good with all of the vegetables in it. Overall the rice and curry tasted great, and the naan and curry we absolutely incredible. The service does take a long time, especially for naan, but all of the food is absolutely worth the wait. My husband and I shared the Taj Special for Two and it was way more than we could eat. And I did want to eat it all - authentic, perfectly cooked and presented. Indian tea and ice cream for dessert. Helpful, welcoming staff/owners. Seemed to be a lot of locals eating so it was a community feel with laughter and children playing outside. Lovely dining experience all around. One of my defining criteria for a good Indian restaurant has gradually become the use or over-use of salt and various other staple condiments in the cuisine. A lot of times, salt is used to enhance flavor and its perception. While it might taste good, it often leaves you feeling bloated and sick once you have enjoyed the food. I am happy to say that Taj has done a great job at addressing these concerns. The food is delicious and fresh. You know it is because dishes don't pop out of the kitchen within a minute of you ordering them. Good preparation takes time, and while you could pre-cook certain elements of an Indian meal, it's the garnishing and the preparation that will take time. I have been here a few times recently and the restaurant has impressed me every time. Also, being an Indian restaurant, you're guaranteed that every dietary request would be catered to - whether you're a vegetarian, a vegan, or just allergic to certain ingredients. The menu has lots of great vegetarian options. For starters, you can never go wrong with the onion bhaji. In fact, order a couple as you will just never stop. They also serve complimentary papaddams, which go well with the 3 different sauces presented. The main course is a more serious affair and Taj offers dishes in either their full-sized glory, complete with rice and salad, or little portions that are great for sharing and tasting everything that the menu has to offer. My favorite are the veg korma, which while containing a sweet curry, goes very well with butter naan. I usually also get a small portion of the lentils or the chick pea curry. The rice is actually a pilaf and you get a chance to ask for more if you so desire. While they have lots of dessert options, you really have to get the Patiala combo; it comes with the rice pudding and Indian ice-cream/kulfi. The warm-chilled combination makes it a treat for your tastebuds. Portions are appropriately sized. For a group of 4, you would do justice by getting 3 main courses and a side dish. Of course, dessert for everyone. The interior is cosy and also good for smaller groups. Reservations are recommended as the place gets really busy for dinner. Service is fast and friendly. They will help you in choosing dishes based on your appetite and preferences. No free wifi; please focus on your food! read more

I've only had takeout from here, and I get the same thing I always order at Indian restaurants: lamb vindaloo, garlic naan, and veggie samosas. They make it perfect every time. The vindaloo is so hot your sinuses will be clear and your tongue might burn off, but it will have died tasting some good quality food. The samosas are crispy but not too crispy, the filling is fresh, and the sauces are a great compliment. The garlic naan is not very garlicky, but I guess you can't win them all. First things first, parking is pretty hard to find around this place. Its in a little center that has other popular restaurants, so pretty busy. Thankfully we got a ride, so we didn't have to struggle too much. We got seated immediately since someone had just left. Nice place, good location, crappy service. They took a minute to come take our order, but we chalked it up to them being busy. We had another table sit down after we ordered drinks (12 min after us arriving). They got their drinks minutes before us, which was a bit frustrating. The food was fantastic though, but it was like finding a needle in a haystack when it came to trying to track down a waiter to help us.
