Chicken biriyani

My foodie friend said this was his favorite restaurant in Amsterdam; he went back four times! It didn't disappoint. The service was friendly and attentive, the food was excellent, the ambiance (we sat outdoors) relaxing and fun. They advertise fine Indian and Nepalese food. Best momos I have ever eaten! The fish curry was my favorite dish- complex flavors and a nice zing in the spices.

Ambience is pretty good, well designed and well maintained. This place is very busy and that could be the reason for decline in quality of service. Orders were rushed, meaning appetizers, main course were all served at the same time after the long wait. Could be fixed by reducing capacity but providing high quality service. I was told by the server that some tables were having even further delay in getting their food served, so I was at a better place than experiencing the frustration they were. So, definitely, there is room for improvement to fix and be the best in class from all aspects! Momo skin had raw dough and they fixed it right away. The naan bread is very chewy and dry, can be way better and closer to the actual standard.

Beautiful ambiance for this trendy spot! Loved every detail of the interior from the accent lighting to the editorial menu. Like most places in Europe, expect slow service and make sure you get all your orders in at first opportunity. Some notable dishes: Papadam on the house (5/5) - thin, crisp chips that were addicting! Butter Chicken (5/5) - such a basic thing to order at an Indian restaurant but never disappoints! We asked for spicy level #3 (out of 5) and it had a pretty good kick, but not unbearable Mismas Momo (5/5) - love that the combination meat is an option Garlic Naan (5/5) - two people could probably share one full piece Lamb tandoori (3/5) - this one was spicier than expected but lacked flavor without yogurt sauce Vegetable Samoa And Biryani (both 4/5) - as good as I expected and nothing more or less Would come here again anytime.

Delicious. 5 out of 5 stars It's an upscale Indian restaurant with fine dining look and feel. We are at 5pm and got in without a reservation. By 6pm most of the tables were filled. We started off with the mint chicken, was very flavorful. I ate the tiki masala - with a 2 spice and it was perfect. I'm glad I didn't go with a 3. Tried one in our party that got a 3 and it was pretty spicy. Tasted the Saag and it was good. Got all kinds of naan, all were delicious. One person got the Momo and it's a 5 Spicey, it was HOT but SOOOO good. He was sniffling the whole time but wanted to get an order to take home. The roti was our least fav. Our kids inhaled the food and ate their whole plate. We will be back!

What can I say? The food at Ashoka is absolutely fantastic. The momos are delicious, the curry is always well spiced, and the drinks are well made. It never disappoints. The Chicken Tikka and Peshwari Naan are a must if you visit. The reason for the 4 vs 5 star is the service. Even with the restaurant not being full, not one server stopped by to ask how I was doing or if I needed another drink. By the time I had ordered my drink, I had already finished my food.

As hard as it is to believe, it isn't as easy to find a good place to eat in Amsterdam. I was naive to think that I could just walk in and be seated. All good restaurants get fully booked quickly. Don't be that person and make reservations!! Now to my review. We were luckily seated (someone must have missed their reservation) We had initially wanted to eat here, but were turned away because they were fully booked- politely, of course- we walked around with no luck and ended up here again, this time the manager was nice enough to squeeze us in. We started with chef's selection appetizers. Which was very good. I had Chicken Tikka Masala, it was amazing! And the hubs had Lamb Tikka Tandoori. It was very good. We shared. I am not a lamb person , but evenI thought it was great. They do serve a big portion, so come hungry. We had a bottle of Pinot Noir, the only one in the menu, their wine selection isn't that extensive. I did like it though. Service was very good, our waiter was polite and attentive. I also liked their decor. Eclectic and cozy. I highly recommend this place!

During our trip to Amsterdam we quickly found out that most nice restaurants were completely booked. We took a change going around and after being declined every where, the manager at Ashoka took a chance, and found us a table. He saved our evening. From there, everything went smoothly. The service was friendly, the food was flavorful, spicy, and delicious. The decor doesn't scream Indian, and I think that's by design, as the place is very nicely decorated. If you like Indian food and you are in the area, give Ashoka a try, you will be glad you did.

Absolutely delicious and authentic cuisine. Yes, you will need a reservation. The food and drinks were fabulous. We got spice level 4 out of 5 and it was spicy, but not unbearable. Loved the Chili Momo, Vegetable Samosa, Daal Makhani, and Garlic Naan. The momos were so crispy and flavorful, definitely the highlight of the meal. The service was a bit spotty. They were absolutely packed on a Wednesday night, thus the reservation. Upon entering, there is no greeting. Simply, do you have a reservation? We were minimally checked on throughout our meal and had to flag someone down to place an order for drinks, a copy of the bar menu, and the bill.

Non veg Tandoori platter. You get rice and dal with it.

Beautiful food. Top notch Indian food. I had the kheema biryani and non-vg tandoori platter.

Best Indian Food I've EVER HAD. Coming from London and going to Dishoom a few days before I was so happy this exceeded my expectations. The location, the decoration, the setup is VERY nice and upscale. Big surprise and not what I would expect when I enter the building. All the options were immense and tasty. The butter chicken was the best butter chicken I've eve had and will spoil me and every other place will be inferior. Hidden GEM. Will definitely be back.

Indian Thali with a variety of dishes. This came with chicken, lamb , dal and saag.

What a surprise to find this spot with authentic Indian food just a few blocks off the tourist trap. Thoroughly enjoyed this meal but be aware that the spice level is legit. I ordered 4 out of 5 for heat and it is the real deal here. Delicious!

Amazing food. The vegetable momo are so good--kind of like samosa crossed with a gyoza. Reasonable prices for Indian food. Feels upscale.

Another great discovery, thanks to my best friend! She found Ashoka on Trip Advisor and book marked…read moreit for me to try; I'm so glad that I did. It's a short tram ride from Museumplein. The restaurant is small and the tables were a bit too close to each other. It was difficult squeezing in between the tables to sit down. Luckily it wasn't too crowded during my visit. They have an extensive menu of both Indian and Nepalese dishes. I had already browsed the menu online and had a general idea of what I wanted. I started with a mint tea. It was really good and soothing. The server brought out complimentary papadum and it was delicious! I ordered the Bhindi Masala. The server asked what spice level I wanted and I requested mild. In hindsight, I should have said "no spice" or specified a spice level of 1 or maybe even 0 if that was an option lol. Her definition of mild was spice level 2. The dish was so good and so flavorful, but it was way too spicy for me. I was struggling with it and the server could tell. She insisted on bringing out another Bhindi Masala without any spice which I greatly appreciated. Since I had mint tea, it worsened the burning sensation. She suggested I try the Raita (yogurt mixed with cucumbers and tomatoes). It was really good and definitely helped to calm the spiciness. The portions are huge and I had so much Bhindi Masala left when I was done eating. I wasn't going to take the leftovers with me because I didn't have a way to reheat them, but the server insisted that I take it, so she packed it up for me. I tried a little bit the next day and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted cold. The flavors marinated the okra overnight so the flavor packed a punch. It's unfortunate that European hotel rooms don't have microwaves because it would have been phenomenal the next day if I could have reheated it.

Super lekker!…read more Recommended to me by a neighbor who raved about this place. I have to admit that I don't really know what authentic "Indian and Nepalese" food is. Of course I have had some delicious "Indian" food over the years. But either way, Ashoka is very nice! I've lived about a block away for over a year and it's my first time there, (of course half of that time it was not available due to the government pandemic restrictions). I ordered takeaway here late on a Sunday. but there were people inside, dining, having a great time. The staff was super-friendly and pleasant and even laughed at my stupid jokes. The food was amazing. HUGE portions. The naan is perfect (I bought two orders which is more than enough for two / three people)...rice is nice and light. The egg fried rice was super lekker too! Plenty of chicken in the curry meal. Something else I noted was the super-thick aluminum foil they used for their takeaway packaging. That's a sign (to me) they invest in quality. I ate too much because it was so delicious, so I worried I may have trouble sleeping with heartburn or worse, but I felt great. I think that's another sign of quality. I can't wait to dine inside. It is a very nice interior. Not a dive or unclean. I will take friends and family here whenever it's safe for them to visit. It may not appear to be the cheapest place, but don't let that distract you. It is near the center of Amsterdam in a very nice area, such high quality, clean with lots of space, it's worth it. (By the way, the Kinkerstraat part of the name is the location, since there is another location in nearby Spuistraat).
