This is the kind of bar I feel most at home in. It reminds me of Delux Cafe in Boston. It is shabby, chic, dark, and fun. The owner and bartender is a lovely German woman. And she makes some excellent cocktails! You could spend all afternoon here just looking around or playing games (they have many) or talking and listening to the great French and German music. Along with Cafe De Wetering nearby, this and that were my two favorite bars during my week in Amsterdam. For me, this is a must go to place. read more

A friend of mine was having a going-away party here and it was a delight to be able to make it while I was still in town and also to hang out at this great venue. We made it here around 9:30pm and the place was jammed packed with people. I mean you could hardly move an inch. Wow, my friend was quite popular! Well its no wonder, she's an amazing, smart and beautiful woman, and about to head off into the world doing something she has always wanted to do! So here's cheers to her! The place has a 1920s Roaring Jazz feel to it immediately. Nice comfy couches, and with nooks and crannies all over. You saw people pretty much draped everywhere. I really liked the interior, very vintage German, and very sexy. Too bad I didn't have my Flapper dress with a string of pearls, long evening gloves and that damn cigarette holder. But, I tell you, that was kind of what I was picturing when I walked in here. Or better yet, a bit of bunker style. Surprisingly, we were able to get drinks even though it seemed impossible to make it to the front of the bar and we found a table for three to chat! This is my favourite café in Amsterdam. Brecht is inspired by an old Berlin living room and might look a bit like your grandma's house. Old chairs, little tables, flower wallpapers. Supercool and cosy. The café is often very crowded so if you want to sit down on one of the comfy chairs, come early! Brecht has a lot of cool German beers, wine and even champagne and other German drinks. They also serves sandwiches and snacks. The crowd is hip and artsy. Lot's of students. read more

I absolutely love Café Brecht. It's one of my favorites in the entire city. It's completely different from any other café in Amsterdam, it really has its own character. It's a typical Berlin café with mismatched sofas, tables, and table lamps spread everywhere without any particular order or organization. It just looks so warm and cosy!! It's a place to meet up with your friends to chitchat, slouched in a couch, grab a bite to eat. In terms of drinks, the menu offers of course beers, including german beers on tap. Don't even try the wine, it's terrible. Rather have a look at the cocktails, they have some nice things to offer in that department. They also have nice snacks, and lunches. The only problem is... it can get really difficult to get a spot! read more

Ok so I get that it's meant to be a throwback, with really old furniture and it is sorta quaint. They do a good job of pushing the dated feel with ancient chairs, tables and pictures.......but....... It just all feels a bit manky. So imagine all the really worn, battered, smelly, dusty stuff that's left at the end of a car boot or jumble sale. That is what this place is full of. It's literally quite manky. Some chairs seemed over 100 years old and it was like they had not been dusted in the same amount of time. For me this is a novelty pub. You would go once, but you would not go back. Plus points. They to a couple of nice IPA's and the staff were friendly. Negatives, the furniture, the decor, the dust. The weird haphazard layout. I like quirky, but this was just a bit to fusty and run down. read more

Cafe Brecht is the ideal place for a cosy coffee with cake or after work / weekend drink. The décor is homely, with low set couches and chairs tightly gathered around small tables. The walls look like they are from a retro living room, with interestingly patterned wallpaper lit up by low-light lampshades throughout. The food is good, although you are limited in options. However, they have a great array of beers and wines and are the ideal place for a chilled out drink and chat. The current owner is really lovely and has been working on creating an amazing vibe for the past five years. I'll definitely be going back to soak up unique music and atmoshphere again sono. read more

3.5 stars. Came in on a Friday evening and this place was packed. Itæs your hipster bar with furniture from the 80s and 90s. My friend and I have a polaroid pic taken of us that night at the bar and we literally look like we jumped out from another era. It's not necessarily a great place to meet people, but it's a fantastic place to have conversations with people you already know. I was on the hunt for the perfect chacooterie board and this wassss.. definitely not it!.! The place reminds me of an antique shop. No kitchen in sight then bam! your foods here. A top place! This small Berlin Style bar has a great beer menu and a great ambiance! Their menu include a wide range on German beers from classic to more craft brews. They also have prepare a very nice, Berliner, Moscow mule alongside with some other classic cocktails. Aside from drinks they also have coffee and have some bar food such as pretzels, nuts and home made cake. Over the weekends this place is normally packed to the brim, so might have to stand. Two friends of mine were visiting me in Amsterdam at the same time, which meant that they could hit all the touristy spots together. This left me and my ladyfriend to pursue more local endeavors, like getting some pie, and getting drunk. Just a short walk from the Heineken Experience, Cafe Brecht is surprisingly full of locals, not tourists. The interior has all the right stuff, comfy vintage couches and cozy little corners for fun conversation, people watching or romance, whatever your pick. If you get there in the winter time, they have reasonably priced gluhwein. Pair it with some Apple taart, and really, what's better? Ok chocomel + whisky. Yum! In the summertime, grab an iced coffee one of their awesome salads or sandwiches. read more

I went here three times in two days, if that says anything. Cute vintagey mismatched furniture, and they basically have the latest Real Estate record on repeat at night. They have board games too! Homey, friendly vibe, but it's a popular place and gets crowded at night---I came here on a Monday and Tuesday nights and it was hard finding a place to sit! Can only imagine what it is like on the weekend. I had the vegetarian version of the tortilla sandwich, it was tasty and inexpensive. Stopped by for few beers... very nice. it was a nice evening so we stood outside. It is a bit on the street which is has quite a lot of bikes traffic... quite a lot... but it is a great position. The terrace outside is very very small so do not expect to find a place. Inside is nice and laungy ... i guess perfect for an afternoon chill out with a coffee and a book. Come here during the day to read in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere, or drop by in the evening for a drink in a busy, trendy bar. The whole place feels very Berlin-like. This is a very sweet place. I think my husband and I were a little too old for this place, but if I had found it as a college student I don't think I ever would have left. It's definitely atmospheric, and the vibe is very bohemian. I loved the beer selection, and prices were very reasonable and the people who run it very very friendly. Came here for after work drinks. Very cute old-fashioned living room decor inside. We sat in a wooden bench booth near the entrance with sunlight through the window. There is also some seating outside for nice weather. Beer menu is solid, and cheap! We stuck to German and Dutch beers. Also ordered combo plate #2 - cheese, mini pretzels, cucumbers, sausage, plus some dips and mini pickled veggies. Totally worth it! Started playing louder music around 21:00/:30, a strange mix of Latin and funk..? Also started getting crowded by 22:00, on a weeknight! They also prepare good piadine (not very filled, but good quality). We came here twice, in the afternoon is more quite but even at night you can find a place or sitting outside. Way overrated. This place is "ok". Has the very old living room vibe with old furniture...cept, it not only carried through with the old look, it WAS very old and too old. The couches were so decrepit that when you sit, you literally sink to the depth of the wood frames of the couch. It was uncomfortable. Service was apathetic. They just didn't care.. if you order, you order, if you pay, you pay. There was nothing special about this place. The super yellow lighting didn't make the experience any better either. Maybe it was going for a "warm" vibe? For me, it just felt old and dingy. read more

So taken are the owners with the vibe of Berliner Kneipes, that they've modeled their own on the bars of East and West Berlin. Honestly, they've overshot the mark a little. The atmosphere is super relaxed and if you close your eyes you could almost imagine yourself being back in the 1920s or 30s sitting in someone's living room. From the outside it's hard to tell that on the inside there's plenty of ambiance. It's cozy, small and well stocked. There's a good selection of German beers here. The staff is also friendly which is a big plus. It has a warm friendly atmosphere that is comfy, cozy, casual, laid back and inviting. The lighting is soft, pleasantly dark but not too. There are little nooks, couches and comfy chairs to sit in to just hang out and chat. This is more of a neighborhood bar than a tourist bar though I'm sure there were a few tourists there. It got real busy as the evening went on so it got a little loud but not too. There is also a menu with food, wines and all the beers. I'll have to come in earlier next time to sample the food. Love it here! It's like the 1930's threw up in a big room, filing it with couches, lamps and different kinds of brown wallpaper. A perfect cafe to sit in a comfy chair and chat while drinking a hot cup of tea. It gets a bit busy but so far no trouble finding a place to sit. read more

After a long morning of walking through the Van Gogh Museum, a cafe described as "your German grandmother's living room" seemed just the ticket. It certainly delivered; the plush couches and chairs were lovely, and I really dug the kitschy, vintage decor. Lunch - piadinas and a pot of Amsterdam tea for the table - was delicious and reasonably priced. Service was attentive and very kind. The clientele seemed to be a mix of locals and relaxed tourists. The next time I'm in Amsterdam, I'll definitely be back (and preferably try their awesome beer selection this time). read more
