Also got the game pate which was very interesting! And the snackplatter included cheese sausage and bitterballen, which is a great starter! Love their bitterballen. So so good! Got their rib eye and holy WOW! Just wow. Didn't expect it to be that good but that meat was delicious and very flavorful! Paired so well with their sauce. The staff was very nice and friendly. This place is a really cool bar with nice ambiance. It seems like a good place to hang out with friends after work! We came here for dinner and I thought the food was okay. I ordered the Angus rib steak and they recommended medium, but my steak was quite pink and very chewy. My friends remarked it looked more like medium rare or even rare and I agreed. It was very hard to chew the pieces. The right part of the steak was also a lot of gristle or cartilage. The herb butter was not bad and I ended up using a lot of it on the steak. I did share a split pea soup with my spouse and we liked the soup. It had boar sausage and I didn't think it was that salty like I normally do with a lot of sausage. The soup was quite thick and the flavors were nice. The pea flavors were indeed strong. My friend got the beef stew but they didn't give you that much meat. They did give you a lot of fries though. I thought the fries were thick and not bad. My spouse and friend both ordered the Zealand mussels and it came in this giant pot. The soup was at the bottom but it was difficult to get to the soup at the bottom of the pot since the mussels were on top. They bought thought this dish was okay. They didn't charge for water here which was nice. It's a tossup in Europe if they will charge you for water! read more

Very very cool place! That we sort of accidentally stumbled upon simply because we were trying to make reservations last minute for dinner and so many places were already booked and somehow managed to get a table reserved here like an hour before we got there. Very impressive tall vaulted ceiling with chandelier at the entrance where we were seated. The interior also had great character with all the barrels - they have their own distiller. The hubs and a friend got the Jonge Genever drink which came in tulip shaped clear glasses. There was a whole special technique to how it was supposed to be served and drunk - as explained to us by the server. Essentially they fill the glass all the way to the top full to the brim, and you're supposed to put your hands behind your back and sip directly from the glass so it doesn't spill!! We definitely got some good videos of that for sure! Food was great too. I got the roasted eggplant appetizer which came with tomatoes and capers - it was really tasty well cooked, tender. I also got the pea soup which was nice. Hubs got the chicken satay which was good. Others got the beef stew over fries, salad, and the melanzane eggplant parmigiana. Best of all was the desserts - especially the tiramisu! We got 3 desserts to share - tiramisu, Dutch apple pie, chocolate ganache cake. Yummy! Overall a great experience! Our hotel concierge had told us about this place. There are two locations one is the brewery and the other is the restaurant. I did not read the reviews until after we had eaten with a group of friends and we did not find it being too touristy or overcrowded but it is a BUSY place We did do what concierge had suggested and booked a table. Beef stew 5 out of 5 Dutch fondue 5 out of 5 Red cabbage w/apple 5 out of 5 Dutch fish platter 5 out of 5 Short rib 3 out of 5 Burrata 2 out of 5 The standout dishes from our visit was definitely the beef stew, Dutch fondue, red cabbage, and the Dutch fish platter. The other dishes mentioned above just fell flat. All the liquor except for the beer is produced by this place and it's pretty darn amazing. This is not the place you come in a hurry, it's the kind of place you come and spend 2 to 3 hours eating and hanging out with your friends. However, the only issue we had is that ourparticular server drop the ball tables around us. We're getting dinner and we still have not received our appetizers. Not sure if they were never put in or what, but it ended up being a pretty long meal because they had to start all over with the order we weren't experiencing this, but I wouldn't the restaurant, because the food and alcohol is super great. We stopped in with no reservation and they were completely rammed. That's no match for Secret Weapon Kelly who managed to get us a table pretty fast. This is the old distillery and you can order gin flights. Food is Dutch classics - stew, fish, etc. I was really happy with my Dutch pea soup which was super hearty and filling. After a busy day wandering through Amsterdam, we decided to head back to our hotel and stopped at Proeflokaal A. Van Wees on the way. We were not disappointed. Food was great and filling, had a great sampler platter of Bitterballen, croquette, cheeses and pickles. Very tasty For the mains, we had their stew and mussels and both were quite good. Earlier, I was shopping for some souvenirs at Holland Huis on Leidsestraat, ( a good place for cheap gifts), and I asked them if they could recommend a restaurant. They recommended Proeflokall A. van Wees. Great recommendation! It's always a good idea to get a recommendation from a local and as a consequence I found a restaurant that is frequented by locals! I found it after a nice walk along the Hegengraacht. Very nice location and ambience. I had my mussels and some frites, and a beer and a shot of gin, and some Dutch Apple pie and coffee for dessert! I recommend the "Close to Heaven" liquor with your coffee. You can thank me later. read more

Great atmosphere here - definitely loud because it was packed. None of us were particularly hungry and this place was perfect for us because it had lots of picky things....cheese, sausage, pickles type stuff. It allowed us to settle in and just rest a bit, pick a bit and have a lovely time. We chatted with the table next to us - they were fun. And Mango the bar cat was a lovely, respectful dinner companion. If I were to order a larger dinner here, I don't recall there being a large selection. It was a pared down menu. Our beers arrived quickly though the checkin gift didn't quite resonate with the server, and using it later is not a good option. Recommended to us by a bartender as a locals restaurant to visit. We were the only non Dutch. Service was a little cold at first but they warmed up. Wonderful little spot on the canal. I sat outside, but be sure to at least look inside as it's fascinating - and looks like it would be warm and welcoming on a cold night. Service was good, except that first waiter vanished and was substitutued without saying goodbye. In my cultural reference, that's abandoning customers, but I know that wasn't the intent. We had reservations. Worst dining experience and food in Amsterdam, for us. The restaurant gives an illusion of being vogue and trendy. The small tables outside are not conducive for dining when you literally have a foot or 2 between each table. It's extremely dense. Server kept getting our order wrong, after rushing us to order. We would have spent more on alcohol but again, was rushed to order. One of his mates who assisted in bringing out items was so stoned he couldn't function. Server was pretty arrogant, never apologizing for serving the wrong entree, taking mine away and reserving it colder with cold, coagulated Bernaise sauce with a film over it. Steak was medium rare, not medium well as ordered. We had the feeling staff were more concerned about their appearance than offering hospitality as a service. We stayed at the Ambassade just few numbers up and hoped for a better dinner experience. Tourist trap, don't waste your money. Go a block or 2 east and there are many restaurants all outside with delicious options and great service. read more

Went in here to eat and the manager muttered that we could only stay till 7pm. We sat down and he proceeded to rearrange the whole set up of tables in the place. The whole time we had to listen to tables being pushed and scraped around and bump into us. The manager couldn't figure out how to arrange the tables around the tv so everyone could watch a game at 9pm and was angrily yelling at the stuff and making noises. The waiter was short with us. We both ordered burgers and asked for it to be very well done and he said ok medium. We corrected him but we were served a rare burger. The staff was so ridiculously rude we couldn't believe it. This is the tasting room for the Van Wees distillery. They serve a decent variety of food. You can also get Jenever flights. I recommend the very old Jenever flight. I had a great experience here and will definitely return on my future visits to Amsterdam. read more

I think this place has gotten some unlucky reviews. I had a great experience when I was there and absolutely loved the place. Had a few different genevers (Zeer Oude 20yr was particularly amazing) and sat in the heated part of the terrace. Also snacked on the middle sized borrelplanken/ charcuterie plate, which was great. The bitterballen were some of the best I've ever had actually. Great little sampling of food traditionally paired with drinks. The one person I dealt with for service was friendly, informative, attentive and professional while keeping it casual and comfortable. As others have mentioned, the place is beautiful to look at and the location is wonderful, especially canal-side on a nice afternoon. I can't wait to go back. read more

Nice non-touristy dark old tasting room. Music at nice level. Good beer selection but you really want the selection of spirits, which is phenomenal. Did not eat here but would, as the food looked very nice and other guests seemed to be enjoying their meals. Service is very old school and formal, and waiters can be brusque if you unintentionally violate particular norms. That said they can suddenly turn quite friendly which adds to the charm of this quirky place. read more

When I pointed out that the change was wrong he rolled his eyes at me and gave me dirty looks on his way to take my check back. When he saw that I had a review for the restaurant up on my phone he quickly tried to retract his behavior and pretended that the 10 euros was hiding under the receipt and I just didn't see it. This was highly unlikely as the rest of the money including a 20 bill was on top of the receipt. I hope this guy was fired. read more

Traditional foods expertly cooked. No foams or fusion here. Instead, perfect execution of favorites. Steamed vegetables still had a bit of crunch, fried potatoes crispy on the outside and soft inside. Grilled salmon filet (skin removed) was crisp on the outside with the center still barely creamy. Slices of pork roast with a light orange cream reduction sauce. The cook obviously takes pride in the work. Well worth the wait time and the modest price.
