Was on my own for dinner tonight. Was in town for a convention and up for a bit of a walk away from the convention center. Found this place on Yelp with decent reviews and was nearby so give it a try. Batman was very friendly and the atmosphere of the place warm and inviting as a local pub should be. He offered me a seat at the bar and a recommendation for a local beer, Lellebell, a tasty blond beer. The service couldn't have been more prompt. It wasn't an overly crowded night for a Saturday, so good. As for the food, I'm very pleased. Wasn't looking for a super big meal and the chicken skewers really hit the spot with a bit of Indonesian flair, delish. read more

So we were looking for a brewery while in Amsterdam and the one I had taken us to was closed, so we stopped into Cafe Gambrinus. lol and behold they brew one beer on premises so I get to count this towards my brewery visits. Cool spot with tables outside along the walk with service outside. I started with an Amstel and then found out they brew Goochem Gambrinus Tripel. Nice tripel with good all around flavor. SWPFTD had a Brugs Witbier. We also tried a couple of snacks, the bitterballen and kaastengels. I'm far from an expert on either one having never had them before. Just ok for me. This was my 93rd brewery visit, but only my second outside the US. What a great cafe!! Outdoor seating like a lot of cafes in Amsterdam. Biked there and my wife was in terrible pain from her period. Waited for 30 minutes from medicine to kick in and across the street is this cafe. Got lunch, my wife needed soup to sooth her cramp and it worked. It was mustard soup with light toasted bread. Simple but very delicious. I got a ham cheese sandwich with latte macchiato. The sandwich was so easy to eat, compact with really good ingredients. The old couple next to us in their 70s drank beer and hard liquor, this is lunch time, lol, but they enjoyed themselves, a rare scene in the States. It just show this the cafe can serve both good food and alcohol. read more

On our last night in Amsterdam, all we really wanted was a nice quiet place with good food, away from the large crowds and bustle of Old Town. We went a few train stops north of Central Station and found Cafe Gambrinus. Located only a two minute walk from the Metro station, Gambrinus gave us everything we wanted and more. The place has the feel of a local neighborhood pub. The staff was so warm and friendly. We had reservations, but showed up 30 minutes early, and they here more than happy to accommodate us. The menu was not long, but they have daily specials and a nice variety including vegan. I had a wonderful plate of spareribs, cooked to perfection! My wife chose a wonderful bisque. We enjoyed our meal outside on the corner of a tree lined street in total peace and quiet. The other patrons were polite and friendly, enjoying the same experience. The service was on point all night. Casual, but very attentive and friendly. After dinner, it was getting a bit chilly, so we asked if we could move inside for our desert. Once again, the staff was happy to help. We split a very large piece of Dutch Apple pie along with tea and a cappuccino. The meal was as wonderful as the experience and the price was very reasonable. If you want to escape the crowded atmosphere of Old Town and enjoy a nice quite meal with great food, take a 10 minute train ride to Cafe Gambrinus! read more

This place is truly a hidden gem! My companions and I wanted to avoid the tourists and therefor headed to the areas off the tourist trail. We were in the mood for a few beers and a laid back atmosphere, so this place was perfect. We sat ourselves at a table at the rear of the restaurant after discovering Oudhollands Ganzenboard (a children's board game). We transformed this innocent children's game into a wild drinking game that involved many beers and rock, scissors, paper to maximize its drinking potential. The bartender came over to see what the fun was all about and said that if he wasn't working, he would've joined us. After a few games, we decided to continue our impromptu pub crawl. read more

I love this place! it manages to be two things at the same time, a really nice bar and a reaaly nice cafe. Sounds stardard, but usually one gets neglected. Not at Gambrinus. Their lunches are simple, mainly sandwiches and snacks, but freshly made and dlicious. Good strong coffee and friendly service. Dinner is traditional French bistro fare, such as onionsoup and poussin, all very reasonably priced. They have a full bar and in the weekends it can get crowded.This part of the Pijp is really so much nicer than the trendier parts. There is a lovely little terrace on the side street, so you don't have to inhale the traffic fumes. A great, unpretentious place that you will love if you like to hang out with locals. read more

My wife and I checked Yelp for a decent restaurant near our hotel and chose Cafe Gambrinus, a short 9 minute walk away. We were NOT disappointed! Casual, easy-going atmosphere, very friendly and helpful staff and away from the main tourist venues, Gambrinus offers a varied and delicious menu. My wife had the fish of the day (I forget what type of fish) which was PERFECTLY fried, along with a bespoke order of longtong rice, a lightly-fragrant compacted cake of sticky rice. I ordered the wild game, which is not on their on-line menu. This amazing dish consisted of a venison stew garnished with a candied pear, along with a venison sausage on what I believe was a bed of potato pancakes, and the piece de resistance, two amazing pieces of venison tenderloin. For drinks, mineral water, orange juice and a carafe of the Monastier Syrah, which wasn't able to hold up against the flavorful venison stew, I'm afraid. We wrapped it up with a very nice glass of Tawney Port and a slice of cheesecake (also not on the menu). You MUST try the cheesecake!--like everything else on the menu, the cheesecake is made in-house and is like no other cheesecake we've ever had; it's not heavy and is set on a syrup that is an amazing compliment to the flavor of the cake. Nicely done Cafe Gambrinus! Our total bill came to 67.00 Euro, or 81.72 US Dollars, depending on how you want your charge to be run on your credit card. What a wonderful neighborhood bar! The food is fantastic! We had the ravioli starter, the fillet of sole entree, the lamb tenderloin entree, banoffee pie, and the tart tartin. The waitstaff was wonderful and brought us English menus, as well as translated the daily special on the board for us. After ordering, we received some bread and butter cream. The starter was delicious - I even at the eggplant, which is nothing short of a miracle. The sole was served with roasted fennel, carrots, and turnip. It came with a lemon cream sauce. The lamb came with carrots, a mushroom, turnip, and parsnips, all topped with basil pesto and jus. Both main dishes were perfect: the sole was moist and flaky and the lamb was medium rare and tender. Dessert was magnificent! The tartin was roasted pear with vanilla ice cream - very simple and elegant (I didn't get the biscuit as I'm allergic to bread flour). The banoffee pie is breath-taking. It's banana, toffee, and dark chocolate pie with a graham cracker crust: Heavenly! We will be back and we will recommend to others! read more
