Wow, this place has a vibe. Huge beer list, dark interior, comfy seating, super busy for a weeknight but we found a seat and placed our order. About two great beers and 40 minutes later, two huge bowls of mussels arrived with fries. Delicious and very enjoyable. Maybe more fries would have been nice but I went deep into the mussels and in the end, they won. I simply could not finish them. But I got far enough in that I was able to dip some fries in and it was delicious. One ding was that their credit card machine "didn't work" despite a good ten minutes of trying. My husband and I got a recommendation from our Airbnb host to go here. Having lived in Amsterdam for 22 years, we assumed he knew what he was talking about. His words were, "This is a place you sit with your friends, get a steak with creamy pepper sauce and drink a few Belgian beers." We did EXACTLY that. Although the space is not huge, it was quite easy to get a seat. Service was attentive and kind. And this spot is in a great part of town. It's tucked on a side street and feels like a local hangout. I loved this pub. We came across De Zotte based on some of the reviews we saw online and recommendations from the locals in the area. The pub was very cozy and we loved the way it was decorated with beer bottles with rustic ascent pieces that gave it a very cozy industrial but homey feel. Very low lighting with candles all over the bar and at every table. We tried some the local beers like Kasteel, Dark Sister, Paix Dieu, Java Tripe and other... All quite good and I'm not much of a beer drinker. The ambience was great and the hostess and bar tender was very attentive and helpful. We also tried Bitterballens which is a local Dutch cuisine. These little fried balls were fire! Delicious, there stuffed with beef and beef broth which give it a very comfort, filling type of feel when you bite into them. You could also taste the butter salt and pepper and seasoning inside which tasted like nutmeg and parsley or basil mix. It was served with a side of a spicy type of mustard. This place was AWESOME! My boyfriend and I went to Amsterdam a few weeks ago and, after a long day of riding the train from London and finally checking in to our Air BnB, we decided we'd just go for a stroll and pop in to wherever we find first. De Zotte gives you the 'locals feel', as if you stumbled upon your typical American hole in the wall pub. The music is great - 80's rock and punk rock, which looks like all the lady who bartends there listens to. Very dark and dim lighting with candles lit in wine bottles on the table. Our bartender was very friendly and attentive. She definitely knew about her beers and answered all of our questions without fail. I'm not a huge beer fan. Well, I take that back. I'm becoming a beer fan and learning more about which I like and don't like. I'd say they had a wide selection here. I ended up going with the "Lucifer", which, being picky about my beers, I highly enjoyed and ordered twice. We ordered the Bitterballen (one of my 'must try' foods in Amsterdam) and some sausage. The Bitterballen, which I've never had before, came out piping hot (like, EXTREMELY hot) and fresh. Gooey, creamy, doughey in the middle with the perfect, crispy fried batter... dipped in mustard sauce and I was in seventh heaven. We came back, or rather, stumbled into this place a few other times on our trip :). Would totally recommend if you're looking for a divey, hole in the wall place with a great beer selection and awesome Dutch pub food. Sometimes, I get selfish. I don't want to write a really good review, sharing my worldly knowledge and keen perceptions with a wider audience---because, let's be honest; I ain't friends with all y'all, and I don't want all y'all infringing upon my discoveries. Then, I remember. I'm not that cool---I'm just an American dude with typically few language skills, long sideburns, prescription black-frame glasses, and the same perma-creased Dickies and button-up shirts that I've been wearing for years. If anything, I'm probably infringing on the cultured elite, savvy business travellers, and artistic auteurs who somehow make a fine living out of their passions. But, dammit, don't I deserve to inhabit the the same sphere of living as them, once in awhile? Yes. Yes, I do. De Zotte. Amsterdam in April. It was pouring rain, and the wind was blowing so hard that parts of the Albert Cuyp market literally flew away. After drying off, we wandered through some rowhouses, and down a narrow street, smaller than what the States would refer to as an "alley." A small yellow overhang announced the spot, a darkened, wood-toned bar with a dozen or so tables, maybe ten barstools. The room, sheltered from the rain and warm, was half-full and burbling with several different languages. We found a table near the rear that was not reserved, in a divot surrounded by kegs, next to the doorway to the kitchen. The Belgian beer list was large & none-too-salty. We had tripels, a quad, a blonde, a gueze, a peach lambic...something else? The food came out after a nice, booze-warmed wait. Lamb filet with arugula was supreme; medium rare. A thick slice of quiche with farmer's cheese, and a gigantic salad. I know chips are supposed to be the domain of the Belgians, and the British also lay claim; but these were far better than any we had in those other countries, and dipped into the (housemade?) golden mayo; perfect. A slumbering, pure-white cat awoke mid-meal, jumped to our table, and let my girlfriend rub his/her belly. After not petting a cat for 3+ weeks...this was the cherry on top of the evening. What can I say, she's a cat-lover. The somewhat awkward first-date going on a table over seemed to be less-pleased about Kitty's bar-trot; he soon returned to his spot amidst the kegs. read more

It's almost like we were transported back to Brugge! After all, both cities are adorably small, walkable, and littered with canals. Throw in nearly a dozen Belgian brews on tap, let alone a significant menu of bottled beers, and you end up with even more drink choices than a typical café in Belgium! Based on the other English language reviews, we called ahead to make a booking for dinner, which turned out to be utterly unnecessary. In fact, we were the -only- table that held a reserved sign on it. If you turn up later in the evening, it may still be worthwhile, but on a Sunday evening around 1830, the space was only about half full. And as far as the food offerings go, I'd recommend erring in the direction of the daily specials. The short ribs available that day were absolutely delightful - peppery and tender without completely falling off the bone. Meanwhile, the Belgian Blue steak with peppercorn cream sauce was savoury, but I found it to be a bit tough for my liking. We weren't paying deluxe prices, so I don't have much room to complain, though. And all dishes were served with a ho hum salad and some fine frites. The draw of Belgisch Bierproeflokaal De Zotte is definitely their beer selection, the dive-y rustic chic of the interior, and the friendly flawless service. And if the staff tells you they have the short ribs special on that day, do yourself a favour and order it! read more

My friend in Amsterdam suggested this place when we said we wanted to go somewhere local. What a great suggestion... great beer selection, hearty local food and friendly staff all made this cute little bar worth a repeat visit. We visited as a group of 4 people on a Saturday night, and thank goodness we had a reservation because it was packed! If you're not familiar with Belgian beers, you won't get bored making your way through the menu - they have a comprehensive selection. As for food, you can never go wrong with bitterballen, but the pate was excellent as was the duck (perfectly medium rare and so tender). I wish this was my local! This was definitely a late discovery on my part because I only found out about this cool place on my last day in Amsterdam! They have a great variety of beers to choose from and their french fries are GREAT! After a long day of walking and discovering, I'm glad that De Zotte was my last stop to have my tasty couple of beers and french fries. The people inside are nice and very helpful; the interior decoration is very pub-cozy and the street that this pub is on is a nice quite street away from the general crowd. Fantastic place. They have an insane amount of beers. Renee was absolutely amazing - she knows her inventory! 150% enthusiastic and charming. I ordered the bitterballens which were fried to perfection and an order of escargots. I could have done without the escargots, but my eyes always tell me to order more than just one item to munch on while trying out a new place. Only wish they had wifi. (i wasn't on any international plans so I heavily rely on it). Luckily, I was joined by a group and we drank a bunch and had a lovely night. I know they have another location, but I'm so glad I came to the original. This is a hidden gem! Seriously, in an alley on the other side of the canal from our hotel and we would not have found it if it had not been for some great yelp reviews. My husband said his steak was the best he has ever had (he loves his steak so huge compliment) and I had a very flavorful ravioli dish. We split some cheese and bread to start and the portion was so huge we asked to wrap most of it to bring with us for the next day. The server suggested sprinkling some celery salt on the cheese - wow how yummy! Service was terrific - great suggestions, great attitude and we just wished we had discovered this place earlier in our stay so we could have enjoyed it again! BTW - the menu says they prefer credit cards, but they will also accept cash. read more

I always want to order "real food" here but I can never go past the cheese plate without ordering it. YUM. And that's not even mentioning their ridiculously fantastic selection of Belgian beers... triple yum. The atmosphere is perfect as well - one of my friends once described it as "being in the coolest spot (the ktichen) at the houseparty". You feel like you're among friends even if you're alone. Only downside - gets massively crowded basically every night, so be ready to pounce on any available table (if you are lucky enough to spot one, which is a big if). Some beers Our table ordered ravioli, quiche and chicken satay ( a nightly special ). Everything was incredible. Quality was amazing. Serving size was large. All this came with a big bowl of fries which were very good. Ravioli came with a salad. Even the salad was really good. As I said, the food was top notch. This place is a little Belgian treasure (who thought that was possible?) right in the middle of Amsterdam. Beer - killer rotating tap list. great bottle selection which will keep you entertained for weeks on end. Food - mijn god! their food is incredible. don't even worry about what to order - ribs, lamb, steak with pepper sauce - doesn't f-ing matter. it's all REALLY good. and, in true [dutch] fanfare - everything comes with salade and patatjes. wait, make sure you also look at the app menu - the cheese is some kind of trappist cheese and makes me cry in longing. This might be the perfect place for a relaxed dinner, but perfect places get really really busy and perfect beer menus get you really really accidentally drunk ..... so caveat emptor. read more

Beer oh beer!! If you are into that precious liquid, and let's face it who isn't, the Belgian style bar is your place. Tucked away in one of the many small streets of the Center of amsterdam, they and an almost endless beer menu. That being said don't expect hipster beers in here, as it is almost entirely composed by Belgian names, the second most powerful industry there after chocolate! They also offer some food, to stop you from getting totally obliterated, as Belgian beers and know for its high% of alcohol. The menu it's written in a blackboard and they have normally 2 different new dishes every day (pasta of the day and vegetarian of the day)I normally go for the spare ribs. It is normally very, very busy over the weekends and it can get very loud. Finally, do not be scared if the resident cat decides that you are on his path, he will gently leap over without even blinking! read more

Great "brown cafe" (Amsterdam's equivalent to a London pub), great atmosphere, great food. We found the place in the Guardian's "10 of the best cafes and budget restaurants in Amsterdam". First, great array of Belgian beers on tap, including a number of local Amsterdam brews. Probably one of the better places in Amsterdam for both variety and quality of beers. Second, great food. We had a table of six. 3 got the lamb and 3 got the steak with blue cheese. Each meal comes with salad and Belgian fries. For appetizers, make sure and order the bitterballen, it's a local delicacy in Holland and De Zotte's is particularly good. Lastly, great ambiance. The place was packed, lively, fun. Just what you want in a "brown cafe". A real treat and highly recommended. read more

Its nice if you can get the table by the window, too. My only complaint is that on the weekends it is really really crowded! Tucked away on a small street is this one lonely but fabulous bar! If you love good Belgian beer and could do with a meal, this is the place to go! The beer menu is big and the food menu is decent. My friend found her favorite beer of the trip here and I enjoyed drinking their varied ciders and kriek (cherry) beers. Couple of the dishes we asked for were not available so I went with the small pasta dish (7 Euros) and my friend had the salad. It might have been the most expensive salad she's ever had at 14 Euros but she enjoyed it nevertheless. Was it the best salad she's ever had? Unfortunately not. Despite this, we had a great night here! It's a few minutes walk from Leidseplein so you have no excuse not to visit this spot if you appreciate good Belgian beers. read more

The bar/cafe is located on a quiet sidestreet off the Prinsengracht. It's definitely a cool bar with a bunch of Belgian beers to drink. The food is also good. I had a steak in a pepper cream sauce. It was very very tasty despite being overcooked. I asked for medium rare and got medium to medium well. It came with fries and a salad. They have a flemish stew that the staff recommends. I'll have to go back and try it out. It gets quite busy and crowded. The service is okay with just the two people working. I couldn't figure out if the music got louder or the people near me got louder. It just seemed like everyone near me was yelling. I could say that was a downside but I liked the music just not the yelling. read more

This is one of my favorite bars in Amsterdam. Not only is the selection of Belgian beers quite extensive they also serve each beer out of the appropriate glass, no exceptions! I actually think this is quite a silly practice but I also like the attitude at the same time. At certain points I have just choose my beer by which glass I liked since they are all hanging on the wall in front of you. The bar itself is quite cozy. By this I mean it is on the dark side, noisy and a little crowded. For some reason they make this work though. Just a good old fun vibe in there. I can't really suggest what to order because everyone's taste is different but a "fun" one is the Pauwel Kwak which is served in a coachman's type beer glass with a wooden handle. If you are unsure what to order just roll the dice like I often do, point to the glass on the wall you think looks fun and drink up. read more

I went here during my stay in Amsterdam in June of 2012. As any good Belgian pub should have, this place had an absolutely staggering beer menu. So large in fact, I had to ask the waitress to pick one for me, since i had no idea where to start. Her selection was spot on - The beer was excellent. For food, the bitterballen appetizer and quiche entree were both very nice. The quiche tasted exceptionally fresh. Laid back and unpretentious atmosphere, typical Dutch pub environment, which I like, and the bartender was super attentive! They also serve food - typical Dutch snacks of bread, cheese, nuts, dips, some deserts as well. This may be my new local watering hole. I had the Belgian Blue steak. I should note that medium rare was on a French rather than American scale: that is, cooked on the outside but merely warmed on the inside. So tender, however, that it was delicious. The Kwak came in a special beaker. I'd forgotten how musky it is; next time I'll try one of their many other selections. Run, don't walk to this place. Bitterballen are amazing (and cheap!). Steak, amazing (not cheap but perfectly cooked and super tasty sauce with great fries and a side salad). Beers? That's what you're here for though. Amazing list, Renee behind the bar is truly awesome with suggestions based on your tastes. As others have noted though, some of these Belgian beauties will smack you on the ass with their strength so be sure to not fall into the canals. I can handle my booze, and 6 of these at 9% really do kick in! Gets busy very early so reserve a table or take your chances. Another outstanding beer bar in Amsterdam, featuring an array of Belgian and Dutch brews. What sets this apart from the other excellent purveyors of fermented beverages in town is great food. I had a super tender and flavorful steak on my visit here. The only minor downside here was service. I was here with Dutch speakers, and twice was presented a beer I didn't order. But, I put that aside considering how warm the atmosphere was, the quality of food and the beer (even if it was a crapshoot what I'd actually get). read more
