Recommended to us by someone in our hotel! It's a brewery in an old church that's making beer using 500 year old methods. I enjoyed my beer a lot, for a 90°F day it was light and refreshing. The Jopenkerk is a brewery in an old church with beautiful stained glass windows. Their beer is available in all of the Netherlands but I don't know if you can get it elsewhere. It is a fun experience to have a beer here, there are many choices on draft and different bottled ones. The choices on draft are shown on big screens that look like the psalm boards in a church. In between those two screens there is a screen that explains the beers better, rotating between the different ones. We tasted a few different ones and they were all good, light as well as stronger IPA's. The forest mushroom soup, which was the soup of the day, was great and the French fries were nice and hot. We had planned to have lunch here but the lunch choices didn't appeal to me personally, it's not a good vegetarian place. Mostly basic pub food. read more

If you like craft beer and good food in a very cool environment this is the place! Such a great location in an old pre WW2 church in Haarlam. First things first: this would be a 5-star review if it weren't for the very limited selection of food items for lactose intolerant/vegan diners. But because my friend and I were hungry and unable to get anything but wasabi peanuts or hummus and pita, I'm docking a star. That said, the beer menu! Wow. I spent 10 minutes reading each description of the many and varied beers before I was able to make a selection. I understand why this is my friend's favourite beer place (and she's been a Haarlem resident for many years). Things like seaweed, caramel, peppercorns, oat meal, and sea salt figure prominently in many recipes. And there's an excellent selection of barrel-aged beers in barrels from tequila to port. After the long decision-making process, I ordered the black and white pepper saison brewed with orange peel and hysop. That was very special. Crisp and delicious in a way that perfectly matched the clouds-and-sun spring weather outside (though the beer says it's brewed to match summer, so go figure). I read my book and enjoyed the atmosphere - stained glass windows and a mix of clientele for people watching. Once my friend arrived, we shared the poached pear stout (a collab brew with Bird brewery) and the apricot gose. Couldn't have had two more different beers. The stout was so rich and brown sugar tasting that it verged on a barley wine. The gose was so tart it made my lips pucker. We decided it was too odd of a combination to share so we each picked one and stuck with it. Went to Haarlem with a friend and Jopenkirk was definitely one of the reasons for stopping by. The brewery itself is inside an old church and they've mainly kept a lot of the church elements (stained glasses, tapestry) which give it a unique aesthetic. Seeing it was a Monday, we were its first customers of the day around noon and gladly enjoyed some beers whose names go with the church theme (Maria Magdalena, let there be light, etc). The tap list itself was very interesting as they have a lot of unique brews here (black IPA, pastry stout, dubbelbok, etc). One of the nice things is that if you watch the monitors, it scrolls through each beer giving details for each of them. I ended up going with a flight and was pleased by the variety. I didn't like all of them, but was happy to try some new beers. They're also quite strong as I didn't realize at first. Ended up feeling buzzed by the end of the flight and realized they were all at least 9%, so definitely pace yourself haha. Overall, this was a nice spot to relax and drink some good beers. Staff was friendly and helpful and I'd definitely come back to try more of the interesting beers on the tap list. Previous church turned brewery; you don't always hear of that so checked out Jopen when we were in Haarlem for the day. Not too difficult to find. Quite spacious with seating upstairs, downstairs and outside. Jopen had a nice assortment of beer. We were able to find beers that suited our tastes from IPAs to stouts. It surpassed our expectations! For some of the food items, you pay per piece which was interesting (bitterballen, cheese rolls--small bites). The pretzel was fine, but our favorite was the cheese roll, pretty much an egg roll but with cheese inside. Flight was worth it to try different beers and you end up saving a bit. The two snacks you get is actually just one snack (2 pieces). Service was alright, a little lacking and waiting around. Overall, cool experience! read more

Imagine drinking at a brewery that's housed in a building that used to be a church. Gorgeous stained glass windows, fabulous architecture, and the unique feel of eating and drinking somewhere different. Jopenkerk served to be a pretty interesting experience and I highly recommend anyone who visits Haarlem to give this place a shot. Ideal for groups and casual hangouts, this place is hugeeee with its two floors of ample tables and seating. Once you enter, simply seat yourself anywhere and one of the servers will come to you. There are English menus available (upon request) and overall, service is pretty decent and wait for food isn't too long. For my friends and I, we ordered a flight of beers for tasting, homemade roast beef, bitterballens and this one other beef dish that I can't remember the name of. The portions of the roast beef and beef dish was definitely big enough to share amongst three people. Everything tasted fresh and yummy and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed each of the food items. As for the beer, it was a hit or miss with some. If you want suggestions on what to drink, simply ask the servers for additional information. There's quite a lot of options to choose from! So don't feel rushed in picking a beer. If you like doing tasting flights that combines beer + food, make sure to call in and make a reservations where you get that option! I believe it was around 6 appetizers paired with a flight of beer for the tasting at a fairly reasonable price. In summary, if it's a rainy day or you need a place to chill and relax, this is a neat spot to visit. read more

We were looking for a pleasant place to have something to eat with some beer. It was difficult to determine that the menu had English descriptions of the dishes after the Dutch ones. When asked for an English menu the waiter was abrupt and condescending. We ordered beer and said we would order food after we had a chance to read the menu. We visited Jopenkerk twice in a seven day period. I think the beer they brew is some of the best in Holland. The Meesterstuk Quad from this year is excellent. There is not only a huge draft selection, but an even more extensive bottle selection. The food selection for lunch is small, but varied. I wasn't feeling well when we stopped in, and I was able to order a steaming bowl of delicious tomato soup that made my throat feel so much better. I also ordered ginger tea that is served as hot water with huge chunks of ginger steeping in it. Their hot chocolate met slagroom was also very nice on a freezing cold day. They have a lot of communal tables and a long bar to house a large amount of people. It's a very impressive and grand building. I wish they had better merchandise because I would love to represent Jopen in the States! read more

A great place to go for some nice beer made in Haarlem. They brew the beer right on site in an old church that is in a new section of Haarlem called Raaks. The beer is very good and they have many different kinds. One of my favorites is the Jopen Hoppen. They also have 1 or 2 seasonal beers on hand most of the time. In the fall this past year I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had pumpkin beer. The place is really cool to look around in and a great place to hang out and meetup with friends. It can be quite crowded on weekend nights. During the warmer months there is plenty of seating outside, but if it's a really nice day, it will all be full. I've been here many times, but only ever for drinks so I cannot say how the food is. read more

A beer place to swoon over. I came here after it was recommended to me by an employee of the hostel I'm staying at. He mentioned beer & church and I just couldn't resist being part of this paradox. Drinking beer instead of wine in an old church is beautiful mayhem. I sat at the bar and was a bit confused as to who I had to order from the Bartender or the waiters, after about 10 mins of staring aimless into space...I wasn't in as rush so I was just letting them get to me when they had time. The menu was in Dutch so I was clueless of what anything was, but the waiter was knowledgable of the menu and helped by recommending me something that would be to my liking it was a hoppy IPA & I'm sorry but I can't seem to remember which one exactly I tried. On our way back from Keukenhof, we decied to hop off a few stops before the Haarlem train station and grab a quick lunch at Jopenkerk, along with a few drinks. You have to walk in a little off the street to get to the entrance, but it's pretty straightforward - walk into the building that looks like a church, and you will discover a brewery! The space is enormous, with plenty of seating inside and out (when the weather is nice), and the bar itself is pretty long as well. The bartenders were quite friendly and served my wife and I a good selection of tastings from the beers on tap. Despite previously being (undoubtedly) a much quieter house of worship, it's now a lively pub where beer is being brewed in the giant copper vats sitting behind the bar, in the shadows of stained glass. The beer? Definitely better than the food, in my opinion. To be more specific, I very much enjoyed the heavier beers. I think I had my first double rye IPA ever here - very bold and full flavor, with a slight hint of fruit - and the stout in particular (Sin & Remorse) was quite impressive. I also enjoyed the 1407 recipe beer (a Gruit ale) as well, and the North Sea IPA is a winner - really wish that was more readily available on this side of the Atlantic. The lighter beers were okay, but some (like the Coastal Gose) were a bit too on the light side...at 3.5% ABV, the signature sourness of the Gose was barely detectable. As for food...we both had a burger and fries, and while the fries were tasty - salted the right amount, warm, and thick - the burger had a very odd rubber texture that was quite distracting. The main thing it was good for was providing some buffer for the drinking. As a brewery, I'm a big fan - very good beer on balance, and a fantastic ambiance and unique location. The food - less impressed, but it will do the job. The Wi-Fi was on the fritz, which was a bit disappointing, but it allowed us to soak in the atmosphere and just enjoy ourselves. read more

I really like this bar/ church. Love the interior of the old church and the big selection of house brewed beers. I really enjoy going there quite early in the evening, as later the bar gets very busy and there is no place to stand/ sit. You also need to deal with groups/ couples of men standing around and just looking at women from their head to toes...not a nice feeling.. My American friend who I met in Spain was visiting her Brazlian boyfriend who was in Amsterdam for a course, and the couple decided to swing by Haarlem, the cute and quaint village to the south. Me and my Englishman met them at what was described as a "beer church". Shame on us, we had lived in Haarlem for at least a year now, and it took some out-of-towners to show us the best place for a beer and hopjes in our own neighborhood. The former St. James Church is now a fully operational, artisan brewery, where the beer and treats are just as good as the people watching, and awesome architecture. Those beers are 8 % a pop, pair it with some bitterballen and you are going to be drunk and full in no time. I loved the Adrian beer which is a white beer. Everyone speaks great English so if you dont know Dutch no worries you are in good hands. Let me start off by saying that the Jopen Kerk is worth a visit and definitely not your average watering hole. A bar in a converted church is pretty cool. It's spacious with a great big bar, stained glass windows and copper brewing equipment. Their beer is good and they've won quite a few awards on international beer festivals. I simply prefer other styles but that's me. I'd go there for the bar rather than the restaurant, which I found to be a bit overpriced for the food it serves. On the other hand, the location is great and if you're after a food & beer pairing meal, they do a decent job. All in all: not to be missed on a trip to Haarlem, but do keep in mind the city has plenty of other choices. read more

I have to say that for this place I actually was thinking about writing two separate reviews: one for the Jopenkerk as a bar and one for the JopenKerk as a restaurant. For the Jopenkerk as a bar, I would like to give it 5 stars! They just have so many different and great beers there. For sure like the special beers they have every now and then (e.g. the "Malle Babbe" I can really recommend). I think their bokbeer (more for autumn) is always among the best bokbeers in Holland! For the bar part, I have to say I absolutely love their service also! If you are not sure which beer to choose, they will gladly tell you about the different beers and often will give you small taster glasses for different beers also. The one thing you have to be prepared for if you come to this place friday/saturday evening is that it will be packed. If you don't like completely packed bars, this might not be the best place for you. However, if you arrive early enough, you have the possibility of sitting down in one of the nice comfortable chairs or on the longer tables with benches. One additional perk I like is that this place is active on the social media and also on Foursquare. Check in 10 times at this place with foursquare and the first beer is on them! (yeah, yeah, I am dutch :) ) For the restaurant part I am a little bit less positive. I have only eaten there once and was not that impressed with the food. The food itself was not bad, but I had expected a lot more. The part I do like about it is that for each dish, they provide the best food-beer combination. So the restaurant part gets three stars from me, while the bar part for sure gets the 5 stars. This averages out to the 4 stars I gave :) read more
