I had noted this place prior to our trip, as it is located within a couple of blocks of the Anne Frank House. I was only able to get tickets for the AFH for a 6:15 p.m. tour, meaning we got finished around 8 p.m. Hence, this became our late dinner option that day. I wasn't sure how busy they would be, but I guess we arrived late enough so that they had a few tables available. The restaurant is located on a fairly busy street (served by trams, which we later used to get back to the Central Station area). It is only a few doors down from one of the canals. The menu indicated that they had been in business since the 1980s, so they must be doing something right. As an added reference point, they are about a 20-minute walk from the Central Station. We arrived and were greeted and shown to a table near the front of the restaurant. It seemed to extend quite a way back, but I didn't have a reason to venture further in. Our server was friendly and provided menus and took our drink orders. I know they had wine but I don't know if they had a full bar. There were certainly several tables of Americans and Brits who appeared to be well served in that regard, so maybe there was a bar... The menu was fairly extensive, with an appreciable overlap with dishes we were familiar with from Indian places in the U.S. We all found something to our taste. I think we ended up with a couple of vegetarian curry dishes and one that was chicken-based. We also got naan and rice. Everything was good, and given the lateness of dinner (for us), we were hungry. When the food came out, they also brought one warming stand per dish. This was something new that we encountered at a couple of restaurants on this trip. This is probably more relevant in the winter months, but it kept the food hot. I'd likely return here for another meal if I'm ever back in Amsterdam. read more

We opted for the location closer to our hotel near the Westerkerk. We ran in from a sudden downpour and we were dripping wet. They servers were very friendly and helpful. The menu appeared to have all of the typical Indian dishes. We got a complimentary side of papardam which was crispy and tasty. We ordered a samosa appetizer and then shared a chicken curry. Both were very good with good flavors but not too hot. The prices were definitely higher than our favorite Indian spot back home. This was a good meal to have on this wet evening. read more

After reading lots of good things about Koh-I-Noor, I decided to come here for dinner on the final evening of my 2023 trip to The Netherlands. They are located on Westermarkt in Amsterdam. I was able to make a reservation online, the reservations system is slightly unusual and involves filling in a form and waiting for a response to confirm from the restaurant, while the confirmation of a table was not automatic, they did reply fairly quickly. The staff here seemed friendly and had good knowledge about the food, there was one particular gentleman who I presume was the owner, who was engaging on the floor of the restaurant and seemed especially passionate. I liked how the menu had information regarding allergens, my server confirmed pretty much everything on the menu would be gluten-free, other than the bread. Before my mains were brought over, I was served a lentil-based Poppadom which I was informed was gluten-free, I didn't particularly like the taste but it was a nice gesture at no additional cost to start the meal while waiting for the curries to arrive. My party of two decided to order two curries to share, alongside a portion of rice. I did find it a little strange how it was served with a cold salad, which I wasn't particularly interested in. I decided to go for the Butter Chicken and the Tikka, the latter being described as the special of the house. I found the Butter Chicken to be very mild, even for butter chicken, it did have some nice flavours though. The Tikka had more spice which I enjoyed and the chicken was cooked well. I'd probably rate the Tikka a 3.5 out of 5, and the Butter Chicken a 3 out of 5, not too bad but I've had better overall at multiple places on my travels. I wasn't a big fan of the rice served with the food, which I think was pilau rice, I much prefer plain steamed basmati rice, which I think not only tastes better but goes much better with the curries. For drinks, we shared a large bottle of water, I understand that in Europe it is not common for water to be provided for free, but it felt cheap and tacky to have to pay almost 6.75 euros for a plastic bottle of water which was 1.29 euros in a local supermarket. It would have felt more premium and justifiable of the price if they had a glass bottle, or at least refilled a more premium and fancy-looking bottle with filtered water. The price of the food was reasonable overall, I guess they tried to make it back on the drinks. 3* - This place is OK for sure but is far from outstanding. I'm not sure if I would return but I also wouldn't advise against it by any means. read more

Highly recommend this Indian restaurant! As usual, I used Yelp to find a good Indian restaurant in Amsterdam. When we arrived, we were seated next to a window. After deciding our order, we struck up a conversation to the patrons next to us. They were locals that had been going there since it first opened over 40 years ago! They expressed it was their favorite restaurant even though they had moved away to another town several years ago. We ordered several dishes to try. All were served on a hot plate. The owner came by to introduce himself. He was very humble about his food and the 40 yr success of his business. We spend 2 hrs there socializing with owner and enjoying his delicious meals. We started with the onion bagees which were delicious with the yogurt sauce. For entrees we had the Fish Tikka Tandori and Butter Chicken. Best Fish Tikka we've ever had anywhere. We had such a great experience ordering curry from Koh-I-Noor last night. Keep in min - current restrictions of s 5pm curfew show only to take out after that time. We were greeted warmly and provided menus. The only had vindaloo with lamb on the menu but they were able to switch out the protein for me easily. They treated us so well and really appreciated us choosing their restaurant. They gave us snacks while we waited for our order - but it didn't take too long. We enjoyed talking with them while we waited. Both dishes (vindaloo and Tikka Masala) were amazing and full of flavor and nuanced as a good curry should be. The garlic naan was delish as the samosa. They packaged it to go so well that we had no spills. When Im back in Amsterdam- this is will be one of my first stops! read more

We waited over 1.5 hours for our food and had to ask for our water and remind the server of our drink order 3 times. Excellent Indian food in the busy part of Amsterdam. Though the place is small it offers a cozy environment and hospitable service along with a great variety of Indian dishes. They didn't turn us down and happily accommodated us on a busy Friday night even though we by mistake reserved a table in the different location. We had to wait for a few minutes but it could have been hours if you come here without a reservation. I definitely appreciated the hospitality. We tried a butter chicken, saags (one with potatoes and another one with paneer), chicken tandoori, samosa and naans. Flavors were distinct but not overwhelming, with just the right amount of spiceness. Tandoori meat was juicy and tender, and melted in your mouth; rice was delicious with every grain separated; saags had a mild sweetness to them. I can't begin to tell you how enjoyable our meal was tonight. Our server from Baltimore, Rajan, was so savvy and accommodating; He helped one of my friends who hates spicy food find an Indian dish she loves. Gave suggestions, like ordering 3 naan for the table instead of our original request of 4 (for the record, the naan here is gigantic). And was attentive in not only refilling glasses, but checking in to make sure we were satisfied with everything. And we were. His boss, Sardool Singh, even came out with a delicious frozen mango drink for me to try since he knew I could use a sip after my spicy tikka masala. My friend Kristen and I and I were celebrating our joint birthday (what are the odds?), and can safely say we have never felt more at home than at this Indian restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam. two words... "grilled butterfish". it was perfect! the only reason i'm not giving this place a 5 is because the portions could have been a bit bigger! Everything we ate was really good, from appetizer to dessert. During my 6 day trip to Amsterdam a few weeks ago, I ended up eating at this restaurant twice. This restaurant has two locations - one near Dam Square and one about 20 minute walk from Dam Square. The restaurants are owned by a family of two brothers. The ambiance is cozy and the service very friendly. Our order consisted of: - Bhindi: delicious - Chole: decent - Daal: very good - Biryani: avoidable - Onion bhajiya: too oily for my taste Overall, the food and the experience was great. Just remember that the portions here are small. Perhaps I am too used to the big portions we get in the US. This restaurant does offer a smaller portion for each dish. If you are a bigger party, I would recommend getting the dinner portion. Go ahead and try it - great Indian restaurant in downtown Amsterdam!!!! read more

Being from Southern California, my expertise on Indian cuisine is limited, but I know good food, and the food here was very tasty. The restaurant was a wonderful little find while on our trip in Amsterdam. Location - The establishment itself gets high marks for being easily accessible from a metro stop. It's also near the very charming Jordann neighborhood, so after dinner you can stroll through the neighborhood and perhaps stumble upon some other delightful find. The restaurant itself is very clean and tidy. It had maybe 10 tables in the place. The wife and I walked in on a Friday evening and it was busy. We were asked if we had a reservation, which tells me they take them so call ahead if you can. We didn't wait long either way and had a table soon after arriving. Serving staff was very polite and friendly. Appeared family owned and the older gentlemen who appeared to be in charge was running a smooth sailing ship. Food - The wife and I ordered the Butter Chicken Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic nann (food came with rice and small salad). Food is brought out family style and was more than enough for us to share. Both dishes were dynamite good! The Butter Chicken Curry was by far our favorite. Tender, boneless chicken in a sweet and flavorable tomato base curry sauce. The Tikka Masala had nothing to be ashamed of. This dish had a mild spice sauce to it and was a nice contrast to the Butter Chicken. Garlic nann was fresh and not overdone in garlic. I wish I had ordered my own. Rice that came with the dish was light and fluffy and went nice with everything. Place is a must try. Before leaving, the table adjacent to us ordered the Tandori Chicken. It came out sizzling and smelled so wonderful. I want to go back just for that, but I'll probably be left wondering the rest of my life. read more

Hard to fault! Cosy, friendly restaurant with efficient friendly staff and excellent food. We popped in last summer and remembered being very happy with the food and service and so returned again when back in Amsterdam for a short trip. They were fully reserved but squeezed us in without a booking and without making us feel rude for asking. We had the onion bhaji and the samosas to start. Both dishes were delicious. Crispy and melt in the mouth texture and excellently seasoned. Served with two absolutely perfect sauces - tamarind and yoghurt based. Complimentary papadums were very tasty too. We had the chicken bhuna for the main and it was very nice, lightly sweet but plenty of character. The naan is great too, crispy bits, soft stretchy, chewy bits and a lovely tandoor bread flavour. My only complaint about anything was that our main was ordered medium hot (we like hot but are cautious when eating at new places not to overdo it) and I would describe what we were given as mild at the strongest. The food arrived in a very timely fashion and service was efficient and pleasant. The staff are very friendly and welcoming which completes the overall picture. Deservedly a 5/5 (well maybe a 4.8-9 for the mild curry but yelp doesn't let us do part numbers!) and I highly recommend to fans of Indian cuisine read more

Strangely enough, perhaps the best meal I've had in Amsterdam. Who knew? Absolutely incredible. There are a ton of options so go with what floats your boat. Some of the food is definitely spicy, but you won't keel over from the shock. The chicken tikka massala is a safe bet if you haven't had much experience with Indian food. Bombay alloo is a great choice also on the vegetarian side. Not a difficult spot to find and totally worth checking out. It is an easy walk in the city, and there are a lot of nearby options and things to do afterwards. I loved my experience here and lucked out with not having to wait all that long. I'm not sure where to start. I don't ever write my personal story for a review, but this one calls for it. If you want a summary, scroll to the very bottom. Let me begin with saying that I'm an Indian and have not felt as away from my homeland even after living in the United States as I felt while dining at this Indian restaurant. The treatment/hospitality towards Indians is horrific! When we walked into the door (purely based on yelp reviews), the restaurant was packed! There was only one table free right in front of us and the server there pointed us to sit there with a cold face. No greeting or show of welcome whatsoever. I didn't mind that.  A moment later, we realised that none of the tables seated Indians. That was pretty shocking! We waited for a long time before someone came to attend to us; they were attending other tables though. The server took our order; repeatedly (and disppointedly) said the order won't suffice the two of us. We just obliged and ordered more. We then noticed the niceness shown to tourists (non-Indian) at the other tables. The same woman who barely looked at us while seating us down was going on and on to impress (and rip off!) a table right next to us.  "for 4 people, 3 appetizers is perfect. And then 1 entrée per person would be needed. And mango lassi, indian beer blah blah... ". And we said to ourselves that this is cheating! No way on earth would that much food be required (even assuming conservative portion sizes) for 4 (unless they play with the portion sizes which I believe they do). Also bare in mind the place is pretty pricy. That's when everything started to fall in place. Being Indian, we know how much quantity to expect. Plus, we typically share food and eat family style, even if it's with acquaintances. So that means, we'd give them a smaller order and hence a smaller cheque. It fits. And explains the cold attitude towards Indians and not towards others.  Several other things happened later that proved my theory -  -The other tables continued to have better hospitality ("is everything okay? Can I get you anything else?"). And not once did we have a server come by our table.  -We saw the servers go out of their way to accommodate non-Indian tourists who came into this cramped restaurant promising them tables very soon. -What we saw next, was the height of all things ridiculous. An Indian girl walked in (must have been with her partner) at 8.50pm and asked if they could get a table. The server rudely said, everything is reserved until 10pm. And no more than 2 minutes later, they offered atleast 3 tables to non-Indian parties of different sizes!!! Some were asked to wait for 5 minutes (but not one hour!). We then understood that if they didn't have an empty table right in front of us when we walked in, we'd have been denied a table too. So here's my take. I get it that you're running a business in a cut throat market and you're going after higher cheques. But compromising on hospitality (at this level!) to fellow Indians is unethical and just unacceptable. I wish I had read some of the 1-star reviews before going in. The only thing a tad bit positive in this whole experience was that the food we had was decent. I don't have a way to compare with other Indian food in the area, but in absolute sense, the food was alright. Taste - 3.5/5 Service - 0.5/5 if you're Indian, 5/5 if you're not Price - 2/5. Portion size vs price didn't match!  Ambience - 3/5. Pretty cramped. I would recommend checking out other Indian places in the area first. In general, we Indians have a much much bigger heart. :) read more

First off I want to let you all know that this place is downright atrocious. I came here with my family of four, and the service and food were the worst. Being Indian I can say this is not real Indian food. 1. Service: The service here was DISGUSTING. The staff here really couldn't be more rude and RACIST! If you are black, do not come here they will treat you like crap and not bother to serve you. A couple who was black got treated very poorly and was forced to eat overcooked goat meat. The manager did not care he told the young lady to eat it or leave. I felt so sorry for the couple and told them that was incredibly mean. Then I heard him talking to his employees saying that, "these black people are so dumb." I was shocked to see filthy the staff was and told couple right away. When it came to our table, our server put hot Chargers down and didn't say what they are or that they were HOT. My little sister BURNED her hand when she touched them. We asked the server for some ice and told him we wished he announced that the Chargers were hot. This fool told his manager (who was from Jalandhar). The manager had the audacity to tell us " WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THEY WERE CHARGERS" We weren't even trying to pick a fight we just asked for ice. Jalandhar then started insulting my family and me and didn't care. Jalandhar was yelling; we stayed calm. Like Michelle Obama said, "When they go low we go high." 2. Food: It came to the table cold and water down. When I asked our server why the food was so cold, he said because of the door was open. I wonder what was the use of the chargers if the food was already cold. Chargers are supposed to keep food warm not heat them up. read more

In country less than just a couple hours and literally a few thousand kilometers away from my closest friend or even somewhat acquaintance I found myself wet, cold and feeling hungry. It was only New Years Eve where everyone was in good spirits and if they were not blowing up some fireworks, they were busy laughing and singing... I needed just a touch of home. I somehow found my way here. Nothing resembling my home or my friends, but still this place drew me in out of the wet drizzle and loud noise. It was slammed and yet the staff took notice of me. A smile. A warm greeting and soon enough a spot to sit and feel included. Less alone. I quickly felt. I did a quick looksee around the room and people were happy. People were eating. Drinking and It was alive. I looked at what the other tables were having and when came my turn to order, my eyes and longing glaze pointed and asked for what they were having. No names. Just aromas and colors and smiles to help me choose my first meal. To be honest I do not know what it was I ordered. It was all delicious. Some curry thing. Some naan. Beers and a couple of other dishes that grounded me and helped me find that taste of home. Never have I been so polarized in my views for a restaurant. In a nutshell - this place knows how to satisfy your indian food cravings, but, the service is abysmal. Now to my ratings: Food: 5/5 Was really impressed with the quality of the food. The daal tadka was cooked with the right spices, pulao was rich and good quality fine rice grains, paneer Mattar was also sumptuous with soft paneer and well spiced subzi and the baingab bharta was also amazing. Let alone the tandoori roti, the garlic naan and even the masala chai. Couldn't have asked for anything better on our trip. Service: 1/5 The waiter started taking our plates before we finished the papadum, my ask for a paper napkin was frowned upon, my roti was packed in a simple plastic bag without any foil. And when they were taking the dishes to pack they stacked it on top of each other, with the bottom of one touching the food in another :-/ Ambiance: 4/5 The ambiance was typical to a usual dine in restaurant. The Food is freakin' hot!!!!!! The spice is nice if that's what you're looking for if that's what you were craving. You'll get plenty 'o hot here. I had the Lamb Madras. Bear in mind that there are hotter dishes on the menu! But I digress. First let me say this is a dog friendly restaurant in that they allowed me to bring my dog into the restaurant. We were seated almost immediately. It wasn't long before we got menus. It's a good sized menu with lots of choices so we took more that a few minutes to decide. Once we decided on what to order the waiter came over in a short time to take our order. It didn't take long for our bread to arrive followed closely by our drinks. The bread came with two choices of sauce that you could spread onto it or dip it into. Both had a lingering spicy aftertaste that you don't immediately notice. One was white and almost looked like ranch dressing though it definitely was not. The other looked and almost tasted like a sweet and sour sauce with a bit of spice. Both were tasty. Once the bread was finished the plates and sauces were quickly cleared. Soon after the entrees arrived. Each had it's own bowl. The rice was placed in center to be shared. There also came a basket of flat bread. As we began our meal, I immediately noticed that the spice level in my meal was sufficient, more than. If I was near borderline I was way above that now, eyes wide and mouth burning. Sipping on my beer didn't help. I didn't think that it would though I thought it might add to the overall flavor of the the meal enhancing it. I was wrong. Still, it was a good beer. I had the Cobra beer. Both of us being slow leisurely eaters the meal took on a nice slow pace so that we could savor our food and chat unhurriedly. It's not a large restaurant. The turnover is not too long as I saw a few tables that were there before we arrived, finish and leave. The staff is attentive. The busboy grabbed my friends wine glass when he finished it, only to hand it back so that he could finish the last few drops if he wanted to. Only then did he finally take it away. We didn't do dessert as our meals more than sufficiently filled us up. I asked for the bill. It was about 45 euro for two entrees, two drinks and bread. I enjoyed it. If a good Indian meal is what you're craving, I recommend you go here. They even do take out. read more
