A few minutes later, we saw a sign for an Indian restaurant with arrows pointing to a narrow hallway in a building. Sure! We were feeling adventurous, so we followed the arrows. At the end of the long walk, we found the restaurant and were seated immediately. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and naan-a pretty safe meal, and one that we usually enjoy. Came here for dinner along with a very large gathering of friends. Due to the size of our group, we were basically given a prix-fixe menu, with courses coming out in waves. The veggie pakoras that were part of the appetizers were good, crispy, and crunchy. Our main courses were saag paneer, daal makhani, chicken tikka masala, and another chicken dish, along with plentiful rice and naans. The daal was a little lacking in flavor, but the saag was pretty good. My dinner mates quite liked the 2 chicken dishes. The mango lassi I had ordered separately was pretty good, and all throughout our meal, our servers were super attentive, clearing away plates and bringing out drinks and new flatware as needed. Was this the best Indian food I've ever had? No, but the food was fine and the service was top notch. Not a bad place to consider for a meal if you happen to have a very large group. So this place may look suspect. It's located on one of the busiest tourist streets. You have to walk down long narrow hall way to get to it. Despite the sketchiness, the meal itself was okay. Once you get to the restaurant, it looks like most average Indian restaurants. The food is also average. Likely not the best Indian food you will ever have, but good enough. Prices are touristy meaning a little high for what you get. When trying a new place we usually don't get too adventurous. So Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, which the server recommended. I was so excited to enjoy my food that I forgot to take any pictures. You'll just have to imagine it. The entrance to Gandhi was hard to find using gps, but it was definitely worth walking around in a circle to find. It's right off of the main street. Ample seating inside and a very clean restaurant. Staff was very friendly. Our waiter was an absolute delight. He was making great jokes the entire time. Very good with English speaking as well. We ordered vegetable samosa, bhindi bhajee, chicken tikka masala, and garlic naan. Everything tasted amazing! We even ordered some naan for take-away because it was so good. Don't come to this place. This place wants to charge you for everything. they don't provide tap water. I was in Europe for last 10 days & ate all 3 meals in variety of restaurants, didn't see anywhere restaurant denying tap water. If you want water, bottled water for 5.5€ is the only the option. Also, this doesn't align with Indian culture...denying water....seriously? In US, India & Europe all ranges & types of restaurants provide an option to pick between bottled & tap water. We were 3 of us, went to Gandhi for dinner. We ordered a bunch of items: Samosa Veg-paneer kadai Daal tadka Garlic naan Cheese-garlic naan Onion kulcha Papad (charged) Onion (charged - 3.75€) Water (charged - 5.5€) My stars are only for the food. Oooh my little gem. I found this place many many years ago by strolling through the streets of Amsterdam, and turning into a strange little hallway that has signs promising massages. I still don't know what led me to turn in this hallway lol. This place is so easy to miss but it's so important to find. As you walk down Damrak you'll pass souvenir shops, frite stands, and all kinds of little restaurants. In between a couple of those, you will see a small hallway with both Massage and Ghandi Restaurant signs. Walk allll the way to the back, and you will eventually be met with the door of a very special Indian restaurant. This place is so welcoming and cozy. The staff is very nice and the food is amazing. I usually have something like Chicken Tikka Masala and Roti. I make it a point to come here EVERY time I come to Amsterdam. It's a must visit. read more

This is probably one of the better spots in Amsterdam for Indian food. Location is a little misleading as many have said. The sign is outside but you have to walk down a hallway through a building to get to its actual entrance. Seems seedy but trust me don't let its exterior fool you because once inside its not what you expect. Service: 5 stars- waitress was friendly and checked up on us often throughout the meal. Very friendly and not pushy to get us in and out despite the wait from others whom came during a rush. Pricing: one of the better priced Indian restaurants we experienced. For as many tourists that were here there were just as many locals talking around us which probably represents good food at a reasonable price compared to the tourist traps nearby. Food: 4 stars. I have to give them credit the bread and sauces for the complimentary appetizer were so good. I couldn't get enough of the sauces they brought out. This alone could be a meal. The fried onion appetizer was good, traditional nothing fancy. Same with the rice and naan, tasty but nothing out of this world. The biggest let down and why I couldn't offer 5 stars was the chicken tikka masala Was subpar. In the states our tikka is creamer, more orange and usually consists of just sauce and chicken. Here there were chunks of onions and peppers which took up a lot of room for sauce and obviously you get less chicken. The sauce was also a deeper red not as creamy as I like. Being this is the main dish I come to eat I was a little disappointed. Overall this is a good restaurant, service is stellar, and pricing reasonable. Just stay clear of the chicken tikka masala and maybe use this place to get some suggestions on other favorites. It's still worth a try. read more

Located in a very touristy part of town, it's mostly locals eating here which says something. I asked Subu, the wonderful woman who works there suggested that I try the Lamb with the Spinach Chaat entree, and that we also try the Chicken Tikka Masala but add some heat to it! Home in the wall on the main drag, caught the small unassuming sign/door out of the corner of my eye. Don't walk past or let the weird corridor or tacky decor put you off! Service was good, a little slow but we were starving. Food was amazing. Had tadoori chicken tikka, samosas, and butter chicken with naan bread. The inside is actually quite nice - a tremendous contrast to what gives the perception of a rather seedy corridor taken to get there. The variety is immense - you can get whatever you desire here (Indian food wise). The samosas were good - I liked the touch of putting them on top of frying onions on a sizzling plate. The aroma was to die for. I also ordered the Ghosht Vindaloo, extra spicy and quickly enjoyed the whole thing. The naan was also tasty and complemented the food well. I asked him for a couple of suggestions and here's what I decided on...... Lamb curry and lamb briyani . This is my favorite Indian place ever. I have been coming here for years and its the best place I have ever found. I always try and take people here whenever they come to visit. My favorite dish here is the butter chicken made spicy. If you like spicy food you can ask for pretty much any dish on the menu to be spicy. For those that don't like it hot the Butter Chicken (normal) is great. They serve a lot of food though, so be careful with the starters. Anyway, we stumbled upon this place and it was fantastic. It was the best butter chicken we have had in our lives, and we eat a lot of butter chicken. The waitress was such a doll!
