From the moment we ordered, we could tell that the older Indian gentleman taking our order was trying to add more items to our order than we asked for. Of which, I specifically corrected him so there was no misunderstanding. Then when asking for water, they brought us bottled water. We asked for tap water again instead of the bottled water they brought us. They took the bottled water away and never brought us the tap water. Then the older gentleman waiter brought us what seemed like a larger order of naan - of which was an unreasonable size for a single dish that we shared. Of course, we didn't eat all that naan. The busboy took the naan away and 5 minutes later, the older gentleman appears (after prioritizing a phone call) with the bill. The bill had 2 naans (again, we ordered one) and the bottled water. I told him we didn't want that water and they took it away and that I ordered one naan. The older Indian gentleman proceeds to insist that I ordered two naans and why did I bring this up after I ate it... which we did not do. We are 2 women - I don't know if this restaurant makes it a practice to intentionally rip people off or just to rip women off or to rip off Americans - but I'd double check the bill, food, water, etc. if you have to eat here. But don't. It's not worth the aggravation. Save yourself the hassle of feeling ripped off left and right. This is a for profit business only - at the expense of their 'customers' experiences, satisfaction and desires. They aren't here to serve you. read more

Very good Indian restaurant. They have lots of Vegetarian options. The menu is categorized between North Indian and South Indian Cuisine. For everyone who's favorite is Chicken Tikka Masala, yes, it was good. The Lamb Madras was really spicy. It's about 8 - or could be even more spicier. The fish pakora appetizer was ok. The fish was teeny tiny. Saag paneer was good as well. More spinach than the Paneer. Naan was the usual like every where's- nothing special. I would recommend this place. read more

I need first start out by highlighting the ever so underrated cuisine known as South Indian cuisine. What's the difference you ask!? I can't say that I'm an expert, but I'd say getting coconut plantain curries and a potato and cheese filled rolled crepe the size of my arm, isn't something you would normally get at a typical North-I restaurant!! If you go to a truly South-I place (which I don't think exist in Amsterdam yet) and are used to seeing your saag and chicken tikka, the menu will be completely foreign to you. Luckily and Rangoli, they have a mixture or North and South so you won't be lost in translation! Back to the review, OBVIOULSY we got a dosa (the arm-sized crepe) and I thought it was thin, crispy, and the insides were perfect! I grabbed that thing and cannibalistically ate it like a hungry binging mofo from the B-rated zombie movie. What's more is you can use the crispy crepe part to dip in all your meals for some extra flave-o-flaves! We also ordered the south indian meat/veggie menu (five different items), meat samosa, and this southern indian dish made from lamb, coconuts, bananas and cashews? Whatever it was, it was delish! The samosa was over fried, but anything fried is good and the garlic naan we ordered later was super crispy, fresh and soaked up all the sauces from our plates like a virgin sponge being placed in a puddle of dish water next to your sink for the first time. Mmmmmmmmmm... I wouldn't say this place was extrodinary, but I liked the smaller portions (since I usually live Indian places like I'm 10 months pregnant), I like the dosas, and maybe if I'm in the haarlermmestraat area, I would pop in again. Note to visitors from the US or UK: The Dutch are typically averse to spicy food, so if you like spicy, be sure to go for something like Madras, Vindaloo, or Rohan Josh. The server and menu will caution you it is very spicy. It's not. The hottest dish here, the " very spicy " madras, is really medium to medium-hot. Indian food doesn't have to be hot to be good, and too hot can overwhelm the flavors. That is not a risk here. read more

Came here during our stay in Amsterdam ... great menu selection, staff was super nice and attentive, very clean place and amazing food. The flavor was spot on - reminded me of the home cooked Indian food. Samosas were perfectly cooked with just the right spice and texture. We also ordered chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, naan, Heineken and white wine ... all great choices. We will be back! read more

So, its time I updated my review coz its been almost 2 years now since my first review and i have tried many more dishes here now. Going back to dosas, they are still as good and if you insist, you can get a spicy sambar and chutney sans sweet :) - which i prefer. I also tried the north indian dishes here - the dal, matar paneer, chicken vindaloo - all good. They can temper the spice level to your liking if you specify.I haven't eaten in the restaurant much but I have used delivery for parties and they are quite friendly and prompt. Quite accommodating as well - given that I always have some annoying quirky request with every order :) read more

Found Rangoli on Yelp 'cause I was looking for some restaurant suggestions near my hotel. This is the first time I've been to Amsterdam, so I really had no clue what was around me. The restaurant was really easy to find. The inside is small, but looks nice and inviting. We were greeted immediately and given a table. The waiter and server were very polite and attentive. Most importantly the menu had a lot of choices and the food was yummy. I had the samosa and chicken tikka masala (my go-to Indian dish) and I wasn't disappointed. We ordered 3 masala dosas and one Chhole-Naan. The food was tasty and quantity of Sambhar, bhaji etc. was plenty and tasty. It's in a very convenient location, it was only 5 minute walking distance from where we were staying and stays open until late (11:00 pm) so even if you came back late after your tour, this place is still open. My husband ordered paneer dosa, my daughter and I ordered masala dosa and they were all good. We are vegetarian and my daughter is vegan, this place serves both North Indian and South Indian food so it was easy to get enough choices of vegan and vegetarian food. They do have big menu to choose from overall. The only thing I wish was they offered tap water in a pitcher then we did not have to pay 2.50 euros for a water bottle. i'd been searching for good indian food near me, but the two places i'd gone to did not satisfy my palate. i wanted flavors which coworkers and restaurants in the u.s. had accustomed me to. my partner and i had a breather a few nights ago, and decided to make it "date night". we went to rangoli, hoping for the best but expecting the worst. by the end of the meal, we left 1 small piece of potato out of 3 dishes. we were happy with the meal. we got an extra which made us extra happy: when we asked for 2 sparkling waters, they offered a large bottle of water. i never have enough water, but with the 1.5L bottle they brought, i was wonderfully sated. read more

I hadn't tried Indian food before visiting a good friend in Amsterdam, but after the first dinner at Rangoli, I was hooked! (During my 2-week trip there, we ate there three times - it was that delicious!) I'm gluten-free and many of the dishes on the menu are naturally made GF, so I didn't have to worry about them. The butter chicken is melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the saag paneer was really amazing, too. My friend the cheese and the garlic naan and said both were fantastic - wish I could have tried them, too! Since returning to the States (Chicago), I've been searching for a good Indian restaurant on par with Rangoli, but haven't found it yet. read more

One of the new places to have dosas in the Netherlands. A lot of the dishes and dips have been "spiced-down" but I still like it. Fantastic samosas and their sambhar was delicious. I wouldn't recommend the mango lassi here, it tastes like a watery amarkhand. The place fills up pretty quickly for dinner so be sure to get there by 6. read more

Why do restaurants advertise a special and beg you to come in and then act annoyed when you order the special? Then when you ask for water, they refuse to give you filtered tap water and insist you purchase a bottle of water for 5 euros saying that they only serve bottled water. Upon looking around, we noticed that everyone else had pitchers of free water. When we mentioned it, we think they said it was because we ordered the special. Others had ordered the special and got a pitcher of water. Was it because we were not Indian? The food was good, but we cannot recommend this restaurant because of the attitude. read more

I am visiting Amsterdam from US. This is by far the best authentic Indian food I have eaten in a long time. I went with my colleague we ordered grilled fish and few North Indian Entrees. Each and every item was flavorful and wonderfully presented. The service was quick too. I am visitng them again next week. I am so tempted to try more of there items. I have also never eaten such soft Tandoori rotis in a while which they served. read more
