Another great discovery, thanks to my best friend! She found Ashoka on Trip Advisor and book marked it for me to try; I'm so glad that I did. It's a short tram ride from Museumplein. The restaurant is small and the tables were a bit too close to each other. It was difficult squeezing in between the tables to sit down. Luckily it wasn't too crowded during my visit. They have an extensive menu of both Indian and Nepalese dishes. I had already browsed the menu online and had a general idea of what I wanted. I started with a mint tea. It was really good and soothing. The server brought out complimentary papadum and it was delicious! I ordered the Bhindi Masala. The server asked what spice level I wanted and I requested mild. In hindsight, I should have said "no spice" or specified a spice level of 1 or maybe even 0 if that was an option lol. Her definition of mild was spice level 2. The dish was so good and so flavorful, but it was way too spicy for me. I was struggling with it and the server could tell. She insisted on bringing out another Bhindi Masala without any spice which I greatly appreciated. Since I had mint tea, it worsened the burning sensation. She suggested I try the Raita (yogurt mixed with cucumbers and tomatoes). It was really good and definitely helped to calm the spiciness. The portions are huge and I had so much Bhindi Masala left when I was done eating. I wasn't going to take the leftovers with me because I didn't have a way to reheat them, but the server insisted that I take it, so she packed it up for me. I tried a little bit the next day and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted cold. The flavors marinated the okra overnight so the flavor packed a punch. It's unfortunate that European hotel rooms don't have microwaves because it would have been phenomenal the next day if I could have reheated it. read more

Super lekker! Recommended to me by a neighbor who raved about this place. I have to admit that I don't really know what authentic "Indian and Nepalese" food is. Of course I have had some delicious "Indian" food over the years. But either way, Ashoka is very nice! I've lived about a block away for over a year and it's my first time there, (of course half of that time it was not available due to the government pandemic restrictions). I ordered takeaway here late on a Sunday. but there were people inside, dining, having a great time. The staff was super-friendly and pleasant and even laughed at my stupid jokes. The food was amazing. HUGE portions. The naan is perfect (I bought two orders which is more than enough for two / three people)...rice is nice and light. The egg fried rice was super lekker too! Plenty of chicken in the curry meal. Something else I noted was the super-thick aluminum foil they used for their takeaway packaging. That's a sign (to me) they invest in quality. I ate too much because it was so delicious, so I worried I may have trouble sleeping with heartburn or worse, but I felt great. I think that's another sign of quality. I can't wait to dine inside. It is a very nice interior. Not a dive or unclean. I will take friends and family here whenever it's safe for them to visit. It may not appear to be the cheapest place, but don't let that distract you. It is near the center of Amsterdam in a very nice area, such high quality, clean with lots of space, it's worth it. (By the way, the Kinkerstraat part of the name is the location, since there is another location in nearby Spuistraat). read more

Definitely a great place to eat if you want your fix of Himalayan/Indian food. This place is run by a Nepalese family so their Himalayan stuff was delicious! They also serve classic Indian dishes which were equally as good. We got a combination of classic Indian dishes, as well as a Himalayan soup, a biryani, and some samosas and dumplings. read more

We had a big party of 7 and made reservations the day of for dinner. They had our table set and waiting when we got here. The staff were all friendly and courteous, although at times the food took a little long. But we figured that was just the European way and didn't really sweat it. They accommodated a couple of our dairy-free guests, ordered dairy free chicken tikka Masala, and it was delicious! Things we ordered: veggie momos, beef momos, veggie samosas, chicken tikka masala (regular & dairy free), Chana masala, daal, garlic naan, raita. Al dishes ranged from medium to mild heat. i really enjoyed this restaurant. my friend chose it randomly after exhausting our other options. i was pleasantly surprised! the food and the service were both great! the place was really clean. the staff was pleasant and made recommendations when asked, the food was filling, flavorful and tasty. i had buttered prawns and my friend had a seafood curry dish. honestly, the best experience i've had since arriving in amsterdam. huge departure from the beef and french fries. i'll definitely be back. read more

While visiting Amsterdam, my fiancé and myself were craving Indian food and naturally looked up a place close by with excellent reviews. This restaurant was open past 10 pm which is late but hunger called. We made reservations on Open table as it secured us a seat which is something we learned we have to do with highly rated restaurants here. As soon as we walked in, a man who worked at the restaurant approached us and knew who I was, which made us feel welcomed and comfortable. We ordered the 2 person min. Pre fix 2 course vegetarian meal, that came with an array of appetizers (fried onion, fried cheese, samosa and momos) all delicious! It came with two dipping sauces (tamarind and a mint based sauce) and we asked for a 3rd sauce (a spicy one) for variation. We finished it all! Loosening our pants a little bit, we were prepared for our main course. A nice olive based salad, rice, buttery naan, a mixed vegetarian dish, a lentils based one and lastly, saag paneer (spinach with cheese cubes inside). Mm mmm mmm ! We wanted to try the dessert which we knew would be great but by this time our hands were on our stomachs, full of goodness. No room this time but it's definitely a place we will come back to. We came into this place a bit hungry and a lil cranky after leaving another restaurant that had poor service. We enjoyed ourselves here quite a lot, the food was delicious, the service was exceptionally expedient and attentive, and the atmosphere was very relaxing. We had Chana masala, chicken korma and an appetizer of mixed meats/seafood. All was delicious and very interesting. Use of the spices was different than what we are used to in NYC resulting in a pleasant adventure in taste. read more
