My go-to Indian restaurant in Amsterdam for almost 25 years! Lovely service and best butter chicken

My wife pronounced this the best Indian restaurant she's ever patronized. I put it in the top two, and that's only because I'm loyal to a spot near my workplace. In other words, this place is excellent. It has a classy atmosphere, English menus, attentive service, and remarkably good food. Unhygenic Restaurant. The owner cleaned the 2 washroom toilets in plain view of the table without wearing gloves and then carried on serving without washing hands. Absolutely disgusting. I had dinner on 01 March 2025. read more

An incredible restaurant!! The service and waiter/waitress was patient and made great recommendations. The food was served hot, wonderful flavor, and many different options. The restaurant is on the smaller side but cozy and intimate. 4 adults split 4 dishes, two sides of rice, and garlic naan and it was plenty! Have to check it out! read more

The food is great and the service, albeit informal and to some even considered cheeky, is good and homey. I've had dinner here a few times because it's really nice and close to the Muntplein and Rembrandtsplein. Most things are naturally a bit spicy though so if you cannot handle that... well, then what are you even doing in an Indian restaurant?! The stews are very flavourful and spiced like perfume and not too heavily, in my opinion. Then again, I can handle a lot of spiciness so my palate does pick up all the other flavors and isn't constantly hindered by anything else. I love the samosas here. They are small and you get two of them if you order them. They're an appetizer. Vegetarian samosas are my favorite! The ingredients, as you can expect from a real restaurant and not a microwaved take out place, are not mashed and are clearly visible. The outside is crunchy and crummy while the inside is filled with deliciousness. They use chickpea flour for the dough so every inch of it is packed with flavor. I didn't order any deserts unfortunately but I love kulfi so maybe next time. read more

Popped in here on a Monday night for a late dinner (around 10pm). It was quite empty but had a nice atmosphere and a very friendly waitress. The music was a mix between Indian and Balinese so at one point I felt like I was in a spa. The onion bhaji looked a bit like chicken wings but tasted nice. I like a big juicy onion bhaji personally. One was enough to share as you get 4-6 pieces. The mint sauce used a jar so was not fresh but tasted quite good - the colour surprised us! The keema naan, rogan josh and vindaloo were all very tasty. Juicy, soft meat and my rogan josh particularly was nice and tomatoey with lots of flavour. They didn't have mushroom pilau rice which I really had a craving for but their pilau rice was fine. Be warned: it's a proper spicy vindaloo. It was good and I would go back. read more

I am a fan of Shiva because it is a decently priced restaurant in one of the best places to spend time in Amsterdam. Don't go here for a date, but to genuinely feed your appetite for good quality Indian food in a personable restaurant that is sort of a refuge from all the hubbub right outside the door. The food is good and hits the spot quite well. The service is quite quick and attentive. The restaurant is big enough to accommodate a big group as well. While you're here definitely try some of the appetizers to get the evening and the conversation going. The main courses are generous in portions, too. Shiva is one of my go-to places for a quick Indian dinner when nothing else would satisfy my hunger for a good meal after work. read more

My husband and I stumbled upon this place late one night 8 years ago when visiting from California. The food was so fantastic that now that we are back in Amsterdam had to return to Shiva again and were not disappointed! We ordered a chicken combination meal and a vegetarian combination. After a long day of walking around Amsterdam my friends and I made our way to a bar across the street from Shiva. I was the only hungry so I walked over to get a bite. Usually when I eat Indian food I have specific dishes I get and only try something new when with Indian friends whose opinions I trust, but I went against my usual instinct and ordered based on the waiter's recommendation. He suggested a meat platter that consisted of different chicken and lamb. Unfortunately it didn't do much for me and I ended up taking it to go and giving it to some homeless dude. Their nan was ok, I was surprised that it didn't have the slightest touch of butter on it. Next time I'm in Amsterdam I will give them another chance and try their chicken tikka masala. read more

This place is insanely delicious. The Paneer in butter sauce was one of the best dishes I think I have ever had, and the Pashmiri naan was as sweet and beautiful as I had hoped it would be. Our party of three opted for a basket of papadums and chutneys, one meat dish and three vegetarian ones, a few bowls of rice, and the aforementioned naan. We were pleasantly stuffed and had to take some home. The dishes come in small bowls, but don't be fooled by their size. This food is rich, tasty, and memorable. (We will be reunited once again, paneer in butter sauce. One day.) read more

Great Indian restaurant with excellent service! I have been here two times about a year and a half apart. I loved the papa-dam appetizer and we also ordered some garlic naan which was delicious. Another appetizer we ordered was a little dumpling of sorts which was filled with a tasty and cozy filling of sorts. There is a dish called saag paneer which we both really dug and that is a spinach with a yogurty/mild cheesy type of mix which I could eat at least a couple times a week. My vegetarian friend ordered a combination meal that had five or six things on it and really enjoyed his meal. I also ordered a tandoori combination and it had a combination of various chicken items and a lamb item etc. I wish I knew what everything included in this meal was but alas I do not know the names of all the items. The basmati rice was perfectly done and very tasty! This restaurant is small and clean and offers a very restful environment. Very nice restaurant I wish I could be at for dinner tonight on this cold rainy night in Chicago. read more

Delicious food and polite, efficient service. Prices were very affordable. We ate the lamb vindaloo and were pleased that it was hot as advised! Most places can be afraid to serve hot vindaloos! When a hunger fix strikes, I end up ambling wherever is open for dinner. My friend and I popped in earlier last week, craving Indian food. They have classic northern Indian cuisine - especially their lovely thick stews. Their version of prix fixe menus are fantastic - typically €25 or less. It's an amazing array of various dishes, so much to the point that we had leftovers for the next day. Everything was delicious - tandoori was spicy/savory, rice was plump (not dry like some other Indian restaurants I've tried), and the naan was fluffy soft. Selection of sauces (from mild to super spicy) were also fantastic. While the service could be slow at times, the food was excellent. I'll definitely be coming back to try the samosas everyone is raving about. Whenever it comes to getting comfort Indian food, I'll definitely be hitting Shiva. read more

Extremely poor service and quality of food was terrible to speak the least. Went in with my family, son loves Indian especially tikka masala. Our food was served in a bed of oil floating on top. Half the gravy was some oil. Both chicken and lamb were undercooked and served raw. Second time around he waiter served al the dishes super duper spicy as hel$ . Burnt our tongue and intestines. When I complained, he did not care and charged us full price. I would rate them a negative 5. read more

Dint in my wildest dreams AMS would have such a nice indian restaurant . Amazing food. I completely loved the Bombay aloo curry. I asked them to make it spicy.. And they actually made it to the india spice standards.. One place That I will never miss on my trips to AMS moving fwd.. Very nice customer service. This is my go-to Indian place. The food is always delicious and the service is good too. I think the vegetable side dish is a bit expensive (can't remember how much they charged but it was at least 9 euros for some simple cooked veggies that should have been closer to 6 euros in my opinion). But regardless I've been to many Indian restaurants in the city and this one is my favorite. We wanted to try an Indian while in Amsterdam, and went into this one just because it seemed more reasonable than another one along the street. We were not disappointed - the first thing we realised that you do get a lot more complimentary than in the UK, so poppadoms and some fresh salad came along...and surprise surprise...we also got a complimentary bowl of Indian rice! The staff is very friendly and makes small talk with all the customers, and we enjoyed the bit of India talk with them, which was good. Last but not the least, the food...did not disappoint. The butter chicken is not to be missed, better than most I've had in the UK. The lamb curry was good, and the lamb was really well cooked to the inside. One word of caution...go easy on the spice on the hot dishes...when they say hot, it's really hot, even for someone who's really used to it, so I am going to say "mild" next time...hopefully when we come to Amsterdam again read more

Nice looking indian restaurant in Amsterdam - looks clean, there is a lot of light and it seems that the owner pays attention to details. Food - we visted place a few times and we were always happy with taste of meals. Dishes are not too spicy for european taste, so you will not feel only a fire in your mounth. However, if you don't eat panga fish, always double check while ordering a fish dish, what a chef is going to serve you. The only disappointment was a desert which we were really encouraged to order. Too sweet and defenitly too expansive. Service - there is a waiter and waiteress, always helpful, kind and nice. Nevertheless, sometimes it take ages to get a meal ( even up to 40min for a small dish) and staff even doesn't try you to make this time nice by serving some small snacks. Overall impression - nice and clean place, with quite tasty food, but it is not our first choice as it comes about indian food in Amsterdam. The other places - maybe looking less fancy - serve you some side dishes ( dal, raita) for free and make you feel come back once again and again by beter custmer care. read more

Starters were a lil pricey.. we had chix wings and king prawns .. you get two prawns however they were meaty. Butter chix was good and the okra was too.. spicy just as delicious. Garlic naan has fresh garlic.. so bring the gum if you choose to order this. read more
