When I arrived I was amazed at how large the space was for a matcha shop. The counter to order was very long and there were plenty of tables of chairs available and they weren't cramped close to one another. The menu was located on the far back wall and the font was small so it was hard to look at the menu while ordering at the counter, but fortunately nobody was behind me in line while ordering. I ordered three drinks to try different things. First was the Pink Señorita with strawberry, pitaya, matcha, and coconut milk. Second was the Pistachio Honey Latte with pistachio, honey, and choice of matcha according to the menu, though I wasn't given a choice of matcha. Last was Bluetiful which included blueberry, blue spirulina, collagen, matcha, and vanilla almond milk. Pink Señorita was probably the more flavorful drink of the three although something about it the strawberry gave off an artificial taste. The Pistachio Honey Latte had a nice pistachio flavor that didn't overpower the matcha. Bluetiful was the least favorite drink since it didn't taste like anything at all; it had an interesting blue color but other than that it tasted like heavily diluted matcha with no hints of blueberry or vanilla almond milk or anything at all. All of these were ordered in 20 oz cups and I felt the price of $8.95 was a bit steep for each of the three, especially considering that the drinks didn't all taste quite as expected. By no means are the drinks from Matcha Cita authentic Japanese style matcha drinks, but they provide a bougie twist on classic matcha similar to other higher priced smoothie and juice shops. I did notice it was unsanitary for the barista to touch the garbage bag behind the counter as if she was about to throw out the trash, take my order at the register, and then start making the drinks without washing her hands, but I didn't want to make a scene and call her out on it; at least she wasn't touching the ingredients directly with her hands, I guess. If you're craving a unique type of drink on a hot day in the West Loop, Matcha Cita is an option but it may be better to stick with the basics and try to watch the barista making your order behind the counter to ensure proper food handling practices are performed.

I also greatly appreciate it being cut into bite-sized chunks rather than ending up a croffle salad on my clothes. My one big note: if you don't count the windowsill, there is no seating of any kind within. More than that, the only garbage can is in the foyer. We got the ube peanut toast and purple rice soft bread, and oh my god, the moment I saw those names I was like: what a dream come true. Everything I love, but in bread format! Both tasted great. The five spice latte was a little strange to me because I grew up with that flavor and associate it so strongly with braised chicken or beef dishes. If you're not familiar with five spice, you may actually enjoy it, but as a Chinese person, I don't think it really works in a latte. We'll definitely be back for the bread and baked goods!

It tasted almost like an espresso martini without the alcohol. The coffee flavor was super strong and bitter, but I did really like the salted foam. Still couldn't finish it. The Ube Latte + Phin Brew (4/10) tasted pretty watered down with barely any coffee flavor. The ube was also very light, so I didn't end up finishing this one either. The Milk Tea with Boba (8/10) was actually my favorite. It tasted more like jasmine or green tea, which I loved because of the floral notes. Just note that the "boba" was crystal jelly rather than traditional tapioca pearls. The OG Banh Mi (4/10) had great toppings, but the bread was pretty dry and didn't seem toasted. I also wished they had some kind of creamy sauce to bring everything together. Overall, pretty disappointing for all the good things I've heard about this spot.

I initially attempted to order at the kiosk, only to discover doing so comes with a 3% fee vs. ordering with a human. It's not about the nickels, it's the principle of the thing! I instead placed my order with the clerk - less ice, less sweet. Though it wasn't very busy at the time, the drink came out relatively fast. The service overall was friendly, too! Now, about this beverage... if I'd asked for a "surprise me," I'd be happier. This is because on its own, it was respectable and unique in its custard-like consistency. However, given that I'd ordered a milk tea, where neither the appropriate consistency nor tea notes made an appearance, my happiness and satisfaction levels go down. To give some credit, the beverage I received wasn't too sweet, and had a slight velvety mouthfeel. It was unique and interesting, unlike anything I had ever had before. Final verdict: there is no shortage of boba tea shops around, especially in Chinatown. If you're going to do something different, power to you. However, don't say you sell one thing, and sell another.
