Quick trip to Chicago and we wanted tea... wow, Gathers was an excellent choice. They have a big menu and the drinks are really refreshing. Space also has some seating area. Street parking available in front of the store. We didn't pay since we were going to be in and out, I grabbed the sesame hochica latte and the peach oolong. I am a fan of real flavorful tea Please come and create your own adventure.

I loved this cafe! The matcha was so good. It was the perfect amount of sweetness mixed with matcha. I ordered through a kiosk so I didn't have much interaction with the staff but they made the drinks well. The drinks did take about 20 minutes to come out but they were really good. I would definitely come back.

Came here on a Saturday around 4pm and we were able to find parking quickly. We waited roughly 20 minutes to order cause it was decently packed inside. Definitely order the cream version of the matcha latte. It's soooo good. I ordered 2 drinks: strawberry matcha latte with oat milk and a mango matcha latte cream with oat milk. The regular matcha latte has a stronger matcha flavor and the color is a dark green while the cream has a lighter cream color but the matcha was perfect amount. The cream is so much smoother. I will definitely be coming back and trying the strawberry matcha latte cream version.

Gathers was recommended to me by some local friends as "the best matcha in Chicago" so we had to make this our last stop before we headed to the airport. It was phenomenal. An intense matcha with detailed origins (including cultivar!) which is rare from matcha shops these days given how trendy it's become. Not only do they have the traditional classics, they're also innovative with their latte options, including rose, mango, black sesame, and more. We tried a good variety of both matcha and non-matcha items -- specifically, I got the seasonal mint Thai green tea, and was pleasantly satisfied with all of the drinks, not just the matcha. the cafe itself is a chill space with self-ordering kiosks and seating, but can definitely get busy as this place is popular. You could add boba toppings too, but I opted not to and just enjoyed my matcha (with half sugar) as is and enjoyed every sip. Goodbye Chicago; I love you so matcha!

i got the matcha latte (extra matcha) and thought it was decent. you can def taste the matcha and i like how they use simple syrup so nothing is overpowering it. i will say, i wish the matcha was stronger, it was kinda eh, i was hoping for something strong since i got extra matcha the strawberry matcha was good, jam adds a nice sweetness to it. the black sesame matcha i did not like as much, thought the matcha flavor got pushed to the background more yummy rating: 6.5/10

Such a cute place. The service is pretty standard and the tea is pretty good. I will definitely recommend and will be back.

Gathers can get busy as it's a pretty popular spot and it's not too big. Because of this, the service can be slow. The store is very cute though and also sells matcha powder + matcha bowls. I tried the mango matcha and the matcha latte, and both were pretty good, though the matcha latte was a little astringent. I would come back to try their other drinks!

The matcha at Gathers was absolutely phenomenal!! Highly, highly recommend their strawberry matcha cream, however they have lots of varied boba and matcha options that I'm sure taste fantastic. The cafe itself is quite small and there was a bit of a line when I went Sunday morning. So don't expect any seating to be available if it's busy. But the service is relatively quick and efficient. Highly recommend giving this place a try if near UIC campus, after all it was named as the best boba place in Chicago!

Tiktok brought me here of course. Something told me to come before 10am. After all, it is a Sunday. But I did not listen and came at noon. Luckily when I got there it wasn't too crazy, but the line was just at the door. This place was packed inside and it felt a bit overwhelming. There are kiosks to place your order which is smart so the employees can focus on making drinks due to the large volume of traffic. Luckily it only took about 3 min for me to place my order. It was easy to do. I've heard about the infamous mango matcha latte so that is what I ordered. There's an area to wait for your drinks and they even have seating. I was able to snag a spot and people watch. 1 thing about this place is the people who come in here sure do dress nice so I'm glad i put myself together somewhat instead of coming in my pj's. I think people are in and out typically because of how crowded it is. It would be nice to enjoy the ambiance if there were more room. It is a nice vibe inside. After maybe 7 minutes of waiting my name was called according to my drink order. Once I left, the line was out the door. So the question is does the mango matcha latte live up to its name? It most certainly does! The drink is really good. Totally understand the hype. Thank you Gathers for making my drink and managing the foot traffic so well on the day to day.

Their teas are pretty good! Not too sweet but still flavorful! Prices are more reasonable than other tea places that charge almost $9 a drink

Takeout/online order: First off, I underestimated how popular this place is! We tried to order at 3pm on a Sat & they were not taking online orders until 4. Once were were able to place our order, it did arrive quickly. We ordered larges of the strawberry matcha latte and the black sesame matcha latte, both with oatmilk. I will say, they were quite delicious! I would give the strawberry matcha latte a 4.5/5 and the black sesame a 4/5. Both at 50% sugar I believe and they were still sweet, but not too sweet. I really enjoyed the strawberry puree and the fragrance of the black sesame! Some of the matcha does shine through which I appreciate, instead of the flavors overpowering the matcha taste. Both of the lattes were a bit on the thicker side and leaves a slight film in your mouth, which I personally am not the biggest fan of, but otherwise if I'm ever in the area I would return!

I totally get why this place is in top matcha lists in Chicago. I got the mango matcha latte with oat milk and it was super tasty! The matcha taste compliments the more stronger mango flavour well - making the drink refreshing and enjoyable. The drink was made relatively quickly given how popular it was. There were three self order kiosks which were nice. Love the packaging and decor in this spot. I'd definitely recommend for matcha drinks here, but if I'm back in the area, I wouldn't mind trying their non matcha drinks as well!

Ask the Community - Gathers Tea Bar

How many grams of matcha do you use for the lattes? Does the larger size have the same amount of matcha and just more milk?

Hi Kim, our 16oz lattes have 2 tsp (~5-6 grams) of matcha. Our 24oz lattes have 1.5x more matcha and milk.

    Do they use powdered milk?

Hi JJ, to keep with authenticity, we create our drinks based on the origins of how it was created. Our Japanese matcha lattes use a whole milk and our Taiwanese classic and premium milk teas use a non-dairy creamer.

They have plushies sitting on the couch in the waiting area and a little floral Instagram wall that's clearly meant for photos. We also very much appreciated that they have a bathroom, which isn't always guaranteed in Chinatown spots. I got the large Fruity Party drink and loved it. It had slices of citrus floating in it plus a rainbow of fruit jellies at the bottom. It was both super refreshing and really pretty. I'd absolutely order it again. My sister got the medium kumquat lemon seasons tea. It was super strong and concentrated, which is just the way I like my tea. I learned that I liked kumquat kumquat so that's a fun bonus. We'll definitely be back next time we are in Chinatown.

I initially attempted to order at the kiosk, only to discover doing so comes with a 3% fee vs. ordering with a human. It's not about the nickels, it's the principle of the thing! I instead placed my order with the clerk - less ice, less sweet. Though it wasn't very busy at the time, the drink came out relatively fast. The service overall was friendly, too! Now, about this beverage... if I'd asked for a "surprise me," I'd be happier. This is because on its own, it was respectable and unique in its custard-like consistency. However, given that I'd ordered a milk tea, where neither the appropriate consistency nor tea notes made an appearance, my happiness and satisfaction levels go down. To give some credit, the beverage I received wasn't too sweet, and had a slight velvety mouthfeel. It was unique and interesting, unlike anything I had ever had before. Final verdict: there is no shortage of boba tea shops around, especially in Chinatown. If you're going to do something different, power to you. However, don't say you sell one thing, and sell another.

We were lucky that this was located in that Chinatown mall because we got parking and we're able to walk directly up here. When I got here, there was no line there was one other patron waiting for her order. There are a couple screens where you put your order in and then they text you because they ask you for your phone number once your order is ready then you pick it up right on the left-hand side of where they're actually is a register. The one girl who was working here that day was very nice and friendly, but I don't think she totally understood me as I was trying to explain the benefits of leaving tip in cash versus tip on the card at the kiosk where you put your order in. We did order two drinks and both drinks are absolutely delicious. However the Taro milk Boba tea was a little bit chewy. You could obviously customize your toppings, the sugar amount, the iced amount, etc. that sounds pretty standard. The flavors were delicious and super fresh so frankly, if this came out of a can or out of powder, it definitely didn't taste like it. Really top quality and great taste for the price. I believe each drink was $6.25 which puts it right at par with a lot of its competitors in Chinatown. Also, if you order some of the unique drinks that come in a unique square cup, believe it or not. The location is completely decked out in their pink. It's very cute and I assume was really put together for the purpose of social media pictures as you can see from the pictures I took. I would definitely come back here again as it is unique however, a lot of the menu is pretty similar across the Boba competitors located in this exact same mall as well.

There aren't many seats available so it feels like a semi boba shop as well. To sum it up, I would say it is ~70 to 80% authentic, which is not bad in my opinion. Braised Pork Over Rice 招牌滷肉飯: The presentation was beautiful and the flavor was actually pretty good. In Taiwan, this dish is usually more on the sweeter side, due to the sugar and shallots added. Here, it is more peppery and savory, and the flavor was actually really good. The beans and the mustard greens were very delicious as well. Even though the flavor profile is slightly different, this was well made and something I would come back for. Noodles with black pepper sauce 胡椒鐵板麵: traditionally this dish is called蘑菇鐵板麵, which uses mushrooms, black pepper and other sauces as a base. The flavor was good, but I wish that there were more mushroom and sauce to balance the black pepper. In my opinion, this dish tasted very different from what I used to eat, but it is not bad on its own. 2/4 Fried pork chops: the meat was fried very well, and it was pretty peppery and crispy. However, I think there are different spices and flavor missing, including white pepper, msg, garlic, Thai basil, cayenne pepper, and more. I wished that the savoriness and spiciness popped up more, and I thought the spice blend and the marinade could definitely use some improvement. 3/4 Beef noodle soup 牛肉麵: I thought the bone broth was pretty good, but I believe the flavor profile should be wider, like tomatoes, five spice, 豆瓣醬, soy sauce, and more. It was a stripped down version, and I wished that is reflected in the name of the item (renaming it "clear soup" etc). Also, the amount of meat they gave us was a little bit pitiful (there were like four pieces), and there were two pieces of bok choy. When Taiwanese people eat beef noodle soup, we definitely expect more. 2/4 Additionally, I wish the drinks were made with some fresh ingredients (not just syrup or creamer), as standard/good quality boba shops from Taiwan try to make drinks as fresh as possible. That is high ask, but I just wanted to note that as a suggestion for improvement. Overall, I thought the food was pretty decent. Would I say it is the most representative Taiwanese restaurant in Chicago? No. The staff was actually Chinese loll. But I do think it reminds me of some flavors and food I grew up eating in Taiwan. If you like popcorn chicken and pork, it is likely a good place for you.

Vibes in the space are fine, it's an efficient little cafe The biggest thing is that there's really an opportunity for more sauces! For the fries, for the popcorn chicken, for example, a sauce would make a big difference to dip it in. I like this place and expect to be back
