I'm a bit embarrassed. I didn't know this gem existed. It was like the world opening up for Me for the first time but it was already here the entire time. Dont worry, I'm not Columbus. IT discovered me! I entered to soft tones, browns, scents, and images. I walked into a smile, the owner. She was so sweet and had a great energy about her. We chatted! They're not 100% open due to restrictions but you can shop most of their other products and items (pictured). I purchased black castor oil, because my hair has been dry af during quarantine. And I also bought Palo Santo, she instructed me on how I can burn it. I'm trying to cleanse my space. Ward off the negative energy and bad vibes. This store is really awesome. There are so many beautiful dresses and beaded blouses with intricate patterns. There are also really cute earrings made out of a plethora of different materials. The owner is also really nice and she gave me some tassel earrings for free after I bought a cute blouse here. Would definitely recommend. read more

Too soon for an update? Finally made it back here to re-up my blackseed, zaitun Shea butter and met the owner. Sweet soul. We chatted for a little about Ghana and it's reassuring to know the owner not only sources from there but has a presence there. It made me long for another trip! This place exudes warmth. I came in for Shea butter but was tempted to buy beads and cloths and all the things. Things I don't need but wanted to, just because of the warm energy in this space. Ended up picking up a mango butter also which has the same smooth consistency as the zaitun Shea that I love. Can't wait to try it out and I'll be back soon! read more

This place is a hidden gem. I am western African and I went to this store in hope to find some clothes for a formal event. The store is really nice looking and smells amazing. There are a lot of variety in the things the owner, a black woman, sells. You can find jewelry, clothes, scent, beauty products etc.. The owner assisted me in picking an outfit and was very helpful. Unfortunately I'm really skinny so none of her items fit me properly, so I did not buy any clothes. However I walked out with very cute Africa shaped earrings and a nice necklace for $5 and $10 respectively. The dress I tried on was $60. I think the prices are fair for the U.S. read more

I shop here ALL the time. I am so happy to get to know this lovely family and to be their regular customer. They have some pieces that you swore you've seen modeled in magazines. It really is a treasure trove of fabulous handmade items and you can spend a long time in the store , chatting with the family who runs it as you dig through their seemingly endless inventory. I've gotten a multitude of compliments on every single piece i purchased from Tafari Tribe. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Their natural products are fantastic. The homemade cocoa butter smelled delicious and i also bought a castor oil and aloe vera hair pomeade that did wonders for my very thick' fro. This place smelled like all the things in life that are beautiful. Lol it was really welcoming as my cousin and I walked in. Everyone is well educated on their history and what each product represents. I got a pair of Fulani earrings and I learned the history about it and what the size of the gold earring represents to the Fulani people. The bigger the size, the bigger the wealth lol I'm very thankful that the staff of Tafari Tribe took the time out to help pick out some intricate jewelry to match with my beautiful wrap shirt (will post pictures of outfit later on) as well as my cousin's custom made skirt and top. It was a bit pricey but not too over my budget. Will definitely be going back there once my next check clears lol read more

Before I came to the store today, I had read a review about how they didn't like white people shopping there. Let me tell you - 1000% not true. I needed a dress for a friends party tonight and was recommended to come to Tafari. Skin color definitely was not even a question! The owner and her daughter were AMAZING! She found me the perfect dress, helped me wrap into it , and was one of the kindest souls I've ever met. Quality and authenticity of their items is 100%. We were filming our webseries and the owner graciously allowed us to use her store as the backdrop. I am overall a fan of Tafari Tribe as a store. I go there specifically for their African jewelry - namely their banana wood items. The price for the bracelets ($10-15 typically) is pretty comparable to other African clothing and jewelry stores and sometimes I find a nice pair of earrings as well. read more

Passed by here after so many years on my way to get food and finally built up the courage to enter . It is somewhat polarizing with its African clothing and artifacts but upon entering you see there is a greater variety of items with something for almost every religion. This kinda store is very unique but it seems to cater for women more than anything which is fine . My cousin(male)and I though were able to snag a couple hats , natural soaps and oils to keep the body looking and feeling good . I could go on and on about this store. I love places that customize, first of all, but the atmosphere there is off the hook the family around, the shoppers, the displays, the walls, everything was just so dope!! Art for sale! Bags! Dresses, all size clothing! Jewelry, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets. But the reason I went there was to get my waist beads. I bought them right before they were supposed to close on the first night. The next day I went back to have them sized and have the remainder made into anklets! Why have I just now discovered this shop!! I almost want to be selfish and keep it to myself. I purchased a kente printed dress for $60 which was originally priced for $80. Tafari Tribe has been a mainstay on Flatbush Avenue for years. It's part of the makeup of the Brooklyn neighborhood. They are family owned and all of their guests, whom I've seen and heard, have never had a negative experience. With the rampant gentrification happening around them, they are still able to provide quality hand made products that you can't find in knockoff shops or online unless you are willing to risk time and money on sites like Etsy.com. Yes, their prices are little higher but if you understand economics, you'll know why and would still be willing to support a small business. They too have to eat! Now to address the most hilarious review about the store owners being racist. They are not! The same respect you want to receive should be given. Keep in mind, the original residents of Brooklyn are still here. We exist. We're living, working and still pushing to thrive even when our own "neighbors" are pricing us out by the minute. read more

I love this place, I found them by yelp and read previous reviews. I went in for 1 dress and I left with a skirt, shirt, 2 men's tops and a jacket. The family's demeanor is very warm and comforting you will feel like you have known them forever. My boyfriends top did not fit the way he liked when I took it home so the next day we went back and the mother did a custom fit with the shirt for him for no extra charge. Everytime I walk into Tafari Tribe w/ my family, we are welcomed with warm hearts and open arms. Your not rushed to buy anything, your offered water and a seat and everyone sits down to speak w you/ as if they've known you for years. The ambiance is beautiful, they really care about their appearance and you can tell that they want their store to be a reflection of not just them as store owners, but the people who live in the neighborhood as well. Everything from the placement of the artwork to the setup of the jewelry, clothes etc.... While much of the fashions cater to Women, the Men's clothes they do have in particular the Dashiki's are VERY NICE. I I bought one to wear at my brothers wedding and my wife bought a dress that was just exquisite!. Everybody wanted to know where she got it from, and she directed them right to Sandra, Sahida & Steadman @ Tafari Tribe. I'm also glad they sell a mixture of clothing and jewelry that borrow from many Eastern cultures but in particular, African clothing that has been updated to 2013. Too often African clothing shops sell clothes that are way too big, as if this is still the 90's. In fact, I have to swing by this week, to see whats new with their Menswear! I walked out literally with a piece of art that I can wear. I loved every second that I was in this shop. Walking into this family run black-owned shop, I was greeted by Stedman and Sandra, the woman who owns the store. She helped me pick out clothing that fit my body type and looked amazing on me. She was honest about what would fit and looked good on me. It was obvious she wasn't just trying to get me to buy everything. Eventually her daughter took over helping me and I walked out with not only a gorgeous dress for myself but a dress for my mom that will be her holiday gift. I can't wait to wear this. Everything in the store is handmade and designed by this mother and daughter team, and it definitely shows. Each piece is original. I cannot stop raving about this place, I loved it so much. I spent a good half hour talking about the shop, myself , where they were from. It was great. I don't care if you're there to support small businesses, love afrocentric clothing, need some awesome art, or just wander in unawares...you will walk out with something. I have been waiting three months and have been given the constant run around(when they do pick up the phone) even though I am calling from another country. They are impossible to get a hold of and do not care to admit or rectify that a back ordered item was never sent. Paid $175 for a necklace that apparently does not exist.They do not care about you as a customer; whether you get your item or are satisfied is not a concern theirs. No integrity and I will be reporting them to BBB. read more
