A very chill place with unique beverages. I had the hot ginger chocolate, which was like a Mexican hot chocolate but with ginger instead of chili pepper (they do also have spicy hot chocolate). The café appears to have a very small food selection as well but I didn't order from it so don't take my word for it. The space doubles as a design gallery, with art pieces, home decor, etc. for sale. The emphasis on design is apparent before you even step inside. An old-time pushcart propping up a "Welcome" sign catches your eye from the street so you know you're in the right place, which was helpful because the shop is a bit off the beaten path (although not at all hard to find if armed with the address). The site seems to have been chosen specifically for its industrial feel, but there is no trace of coldness from what used to be a factory (and before that, about 100 years ago, a horse stable) The space has a kind of country farmhouse feel to it, with decorative scarves hanging from the brick walls and sponge-painted planks of wood decorating the front-of-house coffee bar. I talked to the manager (Fumio Tashiro, a very hospitable man), who said the café will change ownership in July, and an entirely new drink menu will be rolled out. He mentioned he will still be here, and I plan to come back then and make sure things haven't changed too much, as I really like it the way it is now! read more

This place is new to the area. I stopped by early fall and the doors were wide open. It was chilly inside so I ordered a hot tea and my friend ordered a hot latte. Nothing special about my tea and my friend said she had better latte. We left after half an hour because we were too cold. The place did not have much seating. There was too much merchandise to make this a comfortable cafe. Also the shop's advertisement was playing on loop which kind of annoyed me. This place has good potential. This would be a great summer cafe since there is shaded outdoor seating up front and free WiFi. The owner needs to add more seating toward the back of the shop so people can have coffee and some private conversations with friends. Please de-clutter this place! The Japanese stuff adds character but the owner is probably better off displaying a few Japanese products that sell than a whole bunch of things that take up space and won't sell. read more

I have to agree with the first reviewer that a better utilization of space would be to have wall hanging merch only and create a larger sitting area for the cafe and perhaps a bocce ball court because this a big place. Yet I disagree about the beverage beacause I had an organic coffee that was smooth and delightful. Then I killed a brownie with matcha made from rice flower that was on point. The chocolate made here is a great reason alone to go. Right now my favorite chocolates are Josh Early, Poco Dolce, and now J and B is in the mix. The fig chocolate was amazing and there was also a matcha and vanilla chocolate that looked and tasted like velvety starburst dipped in milk. There are many events at the cafe and I think its a matter of time before they get it together. Peace. read more

I randomly walked down 7th street one day and discovered this little piece of Japan in Park Slope! This place is a store and cafe owned by a sweet Japanese couple. They serve nel drip coffee and tea. I tried their homemade beet soup, karage sandwich, and Mochi brownie and they were delicious. They also host workshops on Japanese customs like origami and green tea. It's definitely worth checking out. read more

Hybrid Japanese design shop + Cafe. It's a bit of an awkward setup. The cafe seats flow into the store itself, so there isn't much table top space for drinks / food. You end up sitting next to a bunch of products on display. So, it is awkward, but also kind of cool. It's easy to look around at the different pieces and spark discussion. The products appear to be high quality fashion and craft items from Japan. Had the ice chocolate coffee. It's like an iced mocha with real bits of chocolate floating around everywhere. After living in Tokyo I enjoy true authentic Japanese stores and restaurants. J+B Design/dainobu is just that place. A true local Japanese store, café and meeting place! read more

I happened to find this place the other day and I was pleasantly surprised that they are selling Japanese groceries. Though I bought few snacks, the guy told me that they will expand the items in the near future. Yay! I don't need to go to Manhattan or industry city anymore. read more

On our way to the Morbid Anatomy Museum for a lecture, my roommate and I decided to look around in the area for a place to eat dinner. We found a nice Mexican restaurant through Yelp so proceeded in that direction and this is when we came across J+B Design and Cafe. It is easy to miss, but the menu caught our eye. There wasn't too much of a choice in foods, but the black curry and rice sounded good. And it tasted good too! We also had the iced chocolate drinks with the wafers which was delicious as well.The staff was friendly and they even gave us complimentary white chocolate with a nice green tea flavoring for dessert. We had a lecture to go to, so didn't have time to further explore the shop, but we'll definitely be stopping by at this place again. read more

This place is a bit hidden and hard to find with its nondescript rough hewn loft doors. I got pretty excited because I assumed they carry Scotch. It is a wide Japanese design store with stylish tea sets spanning the back and a tea and coffee shop in the front. There are only two tables for sitting in the front, a couch with heavy art books and a middle coffee table. Cool Japanese proprietors in the front wear beaded shirts, darkened sunglasses and kangols. They graciously explain details about stuff, recommend hojicha, and I don't know how to act. The woman at the front introduces herself as a chocolatier. She makes the chocolates in the back. Wow. The hojicha is of good quality and the matcha roll is rich and soft, the matcha brownie is OK. Superman hipster dad praises the espresso chocolate as the best he's had and I decide to try some. They assume I'm obsessed with matcha so they give me that to try. The swirled white chocolate matcha square is rich and good. Superman hipster dad is married and discussing camera angles in a business meeting. So chocolate is my bud. They serve their quality chocolate in patterned jewelry boxes. Mine is lined with an Edward Gorey long striped cat. I feel like an impulsive sake set or teapot purchase is forthcoming. read more

Really interesting shop/cafe. Run my Japanese people and has really cool things for sale by different Japanese artisans. Beautiful lacquer tea cup sets and really interesting sweaters, some jewelry, towels, neck warmers, coasters, Japanese-style purses/bags, cool boxes you can put jewelry or something else small in, etc. Jazz plays in the background and they have a small menu of sandwiches, chocolate truffles, and teas and coffees. Space is like a large warehouse. Very high ceilings, cement floor, designer lighting. I bought a hoji-cha latte (simple but good) and a box of homemade truffles (raspberry and sea salt flavors,) and a pair of really cool mittens that can be used with smart phones. Everyone there was really nice and it was a comfortable environment. read more

I had a great experience at J+B. The owner Fumio showed me around when I had questions about the wide array of Japanese items for sale, and in general was very gracious. They gave away some free samples of the chocolate they were making. Take note: their homemade chocolate is astoundingly good! Also, they seem to do some great programming in the space with music and poetry performances. read more

Great coffee shop in the front of this place with comfortable seating and relaxing music. The staff are really nice and the lunch specials/drinks are really good. Nice place to sit and read or do some work. They also sell Japanese snacks and other goods. A little bit tucked away, but a great find! read more

J+B is a treasure chest of Japanese works for fine arts and crafts. High-end exquisite silks and linens as well as unique and delightful writer's accoutrements, you will spend time wandering through their endlessly inventive items. I purchase an amazing ninja ping-pong paddle designed by a graffiti artist. Keep an eye out for their seasonal festivals which offer lectures, performances and art shows. The staff is always sweet, the teas & snacks are wonderful and Kanami's "salami" chocolates are a must try. J+B is more than a cafe, it's a porthole for and to many artists - a true community offering culture, beguiling gifts, and a contemporary sensibility. read more

J+B Design and Cafe is a neighborhood gem. The shop is beautiful they sell unique craft items, specialty clothing, wonderful scented candles, cosmetics, art and more. It is so perfect for finding a special gift or a gift for yourself. The cafe is great as well serving unique teas and freshly ground and brewed coffee.  All their other meals and treats look delicious too. The seating area is very pleasant and in the warmer months some there is some nice outdoor seating in a wooded area. It makes me feel like I'm in a treehouse. The staff is so lovely. They play relaxing music. All around good vibes. I believe they also offer classes and workshops in Japanese cooking and crafts. If you're in the area it is definitely worth it to stop by, shop and have a wonderful cup of tea or coffee. :) read more
